Very insightful analysis alittledizzy and kuensukki, ty. Phil discussion is always an intersting one; where's danphil333, they are missing out.

Loved the new crafts video, it gets funnier every time you watch it and D&P were both pleasantly ooc in it. It wasn’t as deadpan and hilarious as last year’s, but I enjoyed it a lot and want to virtually high-five both of them. Pro-tip for D&P: you can use youtube to do silly spontaneous things like this once in a while, it doesn’t take much effort but shows that you appreciate your fanbase (also you have sidechannels, remember those). Yes, phandom will be beating this meme to death again (this can’t be helped), but if anything, that’s 90% why they repeated the joke, they ‘deliver’. I predict they expand the crafts section in US tatinof, so it's to reminds us about it, here’s a pinch of salt.

aah I enjoyed the video. Phil so good at this type of humour and Dan plays off him well.

The pentagram reveal was unexpected. They really pushed the creepiness and lo-fi vibe which I enjoy. Loved the editing.

The video was a good addition to the first but idk now how long they can keep up with it before it ruins the joke.

I hope they'll talk about their thought process how much was planned/improvised and how hard it was to clean up on the next ls.

I hate the middle name thing people are doing I find that pointless and unfunny.

That's exactly how I felt. Like, it was funny, but also extremely uncomfortable to watch. Had a bit of a clown serial killer vibe to it or when your mom's mad at you but doesn't want to make a scene in public, which I'm sure is what they intended.
good description! I agree. felt like watching bottled bitterness (towards fandom's reactions? their own fanservice? the feeling of obligation to do fanservice?) seeping into layers of "joking"

I too feel the anger more than anything. At us and at themselves. I honestly don't mind if they do nothing if they feel like this turned into obligation. Idk I'm a bit sad why would they do that to us.
^^^ that. I have to stop pondering about that. (because my mind is too conspirational at times but this is a thing I don't feel like prodding.. I think I'll just ignore the vid)

All of the comments on Phil's old videos are like 'was fetus Phil on drugs?' haha. You should also check out his old music videos and interactive adventures. Anyway, I'm getting sad and nostalgic bye
Thank you for these :) haven't seen them, but I have to say if he did things like the Basket again I wouldn't mind I'd watch them. They felt pretty serene. Maybe I'm weird (reminded me again of rusty lake's cube excapes)

Ok, so, watched the video. It was...ok. I had really low expectations, and they met them.
I think you can tell during the video they're much more aware of their audience then in the first one. I feel like they did it for us (THEY DO IT FOR US!!!!!).
I liked the jokes like the hand touching, or saying "Friendship!", because I feel like that's an inside joke with us. Other wise...meh. Felt a little bit too scripted, even though there was some improv.
4/10 won't rewatch bye

Not saying this applies to their situation at all, but...
I know of a particular popular group in the mid 00's made up of musicians and friends that got so annoyed with the fandom that they'd start doing things purposely to mess with them, like leaving suspicious photo booth strips hanging in the background of photos, or wearing a shirt with a suspicious saying on it, but secretly photoshopping in a subtle "FTK". Turns out it actually meant "Fuck The Kids"

I think you guys are thinking too hard about the anger you think you saw. Dan and Phil were trying to be stoic to put of the viewers- the whole thing is a doing the opposite of what you are told to do in the Youtuber Playbook- its meant to be an intentionally shit vid, and part of that is being unwelcoming/not bouncy or whatever. Dan and Phil have mentioned before how they binge on sugar and smile too much while/before filming a vid in an effort to be interesting- this is them intentionally doing the opposite. Thats all.

The problem with the crafts vids is that this type of humour really is a one hit type of thing- its less effective the more you use it. The joke felt stale because a lot of it was just them copying what they did last year. The majority of the humour is in the intentionally shit vid/personas, and so the fact that it had already been done kinda killed it.

i really found the video hilarious, but that is the type of thing i enjoy watching anyway. it's why i love dan's editing, something about zooming in and shaking text and odd noises makes me laugh really hard, and this is like what i like from dinof/dapg editing x100. even if i don't particularly enjoy a video i love his editing, so this made my day. i love him in this style of video, i love his sense of humour

jfc it's taking me so long to catch up every day that by the time i can finally post i have missed like 4 topics

i completely agree with what dizzy said, and thank you for that essay, i always struggle when trying to put my thoughts about phil into words

i'm one of those people that truly believe d&p are very similar personality wise irl, based on what other people have said and how when dan is acting less dinof-y on videos he ends up acting more like phil, and when phil is acting less ap-y he ends up being more like dan, i think that if you put dinof and ap on a blender and then toned it down to a bit (because they are both exaggerated personas after all) you would get something closer to their real personalities

re: dapc video, i love this phil, that's what makes the whole thing redeemable, i wouldn't mind getting the same joke every year if it means we get more creepy humor phil. i thought that the video itself was funnier than last years, but the fact that it has been already done ruins it a little bit.

i would have loved if they made a different channel, danandphilbeauty would have been great, that could be a way better tradition, and it would involve them getting a play button every year at vidcon or sitc

i also think that the phandom being incredibly annoying and overusing the jokes is part of the joke in a way, idk, it's stupid, but it doesn't annoy me

and yes i get a kick out of knowing that so many people are annoyed by it.... plot-twist i am dan

it's like when people complain about the comments on every video that d&p show up for 0,3 seconds being about them and feel sorry for the youtubers that posted said videos

m8 dw, they are probably ecstatic about it

so on the subject of psycho-analysing Phil, i was doing research on psychopathy to prove my point that Emma Blackery is one and apparently to recognize a psycho:
-Psychopaths have "black-leather toughness" combined with boyish innocence
-they embody incongruity
-they exude a subtle but definite air of confidence and superiority
-they need little sleep (sleepless night with Phil)
-they sometimes exhibit unconvincing emotional response
-they will drop hints of their true nature but in veiled manner (perv Phil, scary Phil...)
-they have deviant sexual behaviours (#fury, no judging tho)
-they can exhibit flashes of contempt
-they have poor sense of smell (lol)
-they invade your personal space (touchy Phil)
-they have an eerily calm demeanor
-they have a saintly aura (precious innocent cinnamon bun Philly)
-they have little to no body odor (did someone smell Phil?)

what do we think? Image

They are also known to stare. "An intense gaze that sometimes feels like they're looking inside you".
Apparently it is sometimes paired with the idea of "scoptophilia", deriving sexual pleasure from staring. A predatory gaze.

Love the psychoanalysing of Phil; I'm sorry if i'm about to repeat what has literally just been said, I have less time to read these days and so am alwaya worried i've managed to skip a page.

i agree with alittledizzy and others who have expanded, their current ying/yang persona branding has made them very popular. and, as a 1-dimensional thing, it makes a lot of sense. so it makes me happy, but also super frustrated when things like this latest video appeal to a (rather large, i'd say) subset of the audience, and make them crave something they miss, never watched, or didn't pick up on the first time around.

Phil and Dan from Amazing Dan- towards the end of SAP (you can feel the shift in the last few eps, i reckon), had the unexagerrated dynamic that was just exaggerated in their early individual content, and then lately very infrequently in things like D&P crafts and the ocassional gaming video moment. Dan was the cheeky, naughty, slightly impulsive younger counterpart/follower to Phil's older, 'weirder', more out-of-the-box thinking leader. admonitioning Dinof for his interjections felt comfortable because he was a little sass-mouth and could take it, but sweet and sort of niave enough that the AP persona showed visible affection.

They may have capitlised on and exagerrated those elements that people found appealing from their early joint stuff, but for me (i acknowledge this is a personal frustration) they started to lose me when that particular exaggerated Dinof become the 'leader' and that one-dimensional AP his sidekick.

Dinof even on his own channel is much sweeter and more sensitive (and i'd say Dan Howell off-camera, hugely so), and well, Phil all of the things everyone has already pointed out, on AP and then even moreso in 'real' life. this is the easiest way I can describe to people why i'm almost at my breaking point with all their content across the board, and why i lool forward most to liveshows.

Loving all of these armchair analysis posts about Phil. I don't have much more to add to the discussion (woke up to 7 pages omfg guys) but I also love Phil in these craft vids and wish we got to see him act like this more often.

"You can have different sizes of paper, A5, A6, A7, A8..."
"A9?"
"NO."

Don't get me wrong I'm fine with their usual dynamic of DINOF making faces at the weird (and sometimes ~suggestive~) things AP says, but I also love seeing the tables turned and Phil being the one to shut Dan down instead

NGL I was a teeny bit disappointed it wasn't a DanAndPhilBEAUTY vid BUT I enjoyed the craft vid so much that I'm okay with there being no DAPB

LOL omg To all the people who have a "thing" for his hands/fingers, you can add this to your collection

Regarding the new DAPC video: I think I only laughed at the pentagram bit and when Phil was smacking his hand on the paper with such force, but I had a small smile on my face throughout the vid. I don't remember much about the first craft video from last year but I do remember having the unpopular opinion of not finding it as hilarious as everyone else did.

Only things don't match is the poor sense of smell (Phil loves candles) and they have little to no body odor (most meet and greets people say they smell really nice) so um... he passes the test? :?
