I understand people finding Dan condescending, bc well, he can be... I've gotten annoyed with him a few times in live shows 4 this reason. But in terms of the piano and thing, I think he was just reacting to the strength of reaction fans had to him playing (badly) for 10 seconds. People were recording it and sharing it, and I reckon it made him feel self conscious about his playing.

Also, I don't think he was being sexist with his comments about people not liking his 'shitppst' (tatinof) videos. He didn't mention boys specifically... I think he is thinking of casual (and critical) fans. If anything, this shows that Dan is sensitive to criticism. In terms of the makeup video... that was a long time ago and it apparently still bothers him that some viewers didn't enjoy that video. I'm that case, it might more likely be boys that do not enjoy that video, mainly bc of masculinity standards

The new sims video is ADORABLE and I was smiling so hard the whole time that my face hurts. Quite a bit of squealing too.

Don't have much to say other than that. LOL

fancybum and sia your analysis skills are so Stan worthy
Just want to say I agree wholeheartedly with how both boys approach their channels and what drives them. I feel like Phil does choose majority of the games played and makes sure that the audience will enjoy it. Hell, most of the intro banter is dan asking phil what games he's chosen. It's never been hidden but no one really thought further into it. To me Phil is more calculated and less obsessed with audience and their opinions. I'm sure a negative opinion will hurt him but he doesn't actively look for it choosing to sit in his bubble of "im making a video and getting views.

Dan on the other hand, seeks both critique and approval/validation from his audience. It's why he's so well versed in the memes and inside jokes in phandom, he looks for them, acknowledges them and lets it's stew. Maybe that's why he sometimes mentions negative comments when all we usually see is positive. What I don't understand is that he consistently talks about creativity and doing content he enjoys yet all his videos ARE catered to audience. Memes and horrendous school video, they were all done because it was the relatable shit that sells. So why rant and talk about how you want to have a channel with "good" content then be satisfied putting that out? It's almost hypocritical what he does, talk down to the tags and stuff yet his most popular videos are the tags?? And he's at odds with that, yet unwilling to take a risk and change that formula.

i don't really care what dan's deal is, if he wants DINOF to be high-quality content only (however he defines it) let it be so, but he may want to start making those high-quality videos instead of sitting on his ass and being all talk. it would help if he actually went through with his ideas instead of stockpiling them for later under "this video is so march 2017!", because by the time march 2017 comes someone will already have done it or he would have lost interest or w/e and the idea will be scrapped.

he said he might be filming a dinof video this weekened... watch it be another ISG. :gg:

i find it interesting how protective he was of phil's (not that original in the first place) tag/challenge ideas though, to the point of sending the phandom after the youtubers who failed to credit phil for the 7 second challenge. did he value it more because it was an "original" idea (sure, jan) and therefore still counts as creative, or was it just because it was to do with phil? who knows.

Delurking to say that I agree so much. And my saltiness is of the same level.
Like, they (Dan) said they wanted to focus on youtube this year, did they mean more kinda lame videos of the same kind they were doing in the past ~3 years + ls uploads to Youtube, or can we expect something more exciting.

Re: Latest Sims video - weren't toddlers very similar in Sims 2, it's not a new feature. Deppy were kinda cute awwing about Dab, even though I can't personally see what's particularly cute about the Sims babies/children (is it just a relief that the child is not "ugly" or pixelated lol). Despite most of the video being quite fluffy (and a bit uneventful), unnecessarily extensive talk about breasts put me off, I'd rather they edited that out.

First of all, re: quality content, I really feel the need to defend the ISG, this is my favorite series and some of my all time favorite Dan's videos. Are they easy to make? Probably, but I'm not a youtuber, I don't know. On a more general note, if Dan (and Phil) is good with it, then I'm good, too. And I usually don't like the "first win an Oscar, then you can critique all you want" attitude, but it's literally their job and Deppy have been doing it for a long time. Is what they do an easy entertainment? You bet it is. Is it bad making easy entertainment content? Depends on what you think about the purpose of entertainment, personally, I have a stressful job and sometimes I just physically can't stand watching another drama or a bittersweet comedy about social issues, so I'm appreciative. I'm even more appreciative about it being self-produced where I don't have to worry about what's in my favorite entertainer's contract and how big was their part in the creative process. And I'm sorry, but serious filmmakers don't stan Ryan Murphy and Steven Moffat, accept your trashy fannish self, Dan, it's ok

[offtopic]On the subject of other youtubers watching Dan's videos, kinda off-topic, I haven't seen anyone mention yet that in TomSka's holiday vlog, apart from the selfie thing (the "Dan" and the "Phil"), his group? (sorry, I don't really know what to call them) is watching Dan's memes video at half-speed. I can't tell though if it's a random video for them or they're laughing at Dan specificially sounding drunk and if it's been put in the vlog to get views from the phandom, your guess is as good as mine. @ 43:22
Then, in Lilly's last video, she's also seen watching Dan's memes video in a scene that illustrates "doing usual stuff on my computer", again no idea (and I don't watch her that much, so I don't even know what her relationship with Deppy is and does she mention them at all) @2:53

MJ’s official video review =
I haven’t caught up with the thread yet because #spoilers so I bet half this stuff has already been discussed, but yolo I still will force upon you my overly detailed trashy timestamps.

Timestamps: Sims 4 #34
0:14—“Dab, Tab, and the Big D.” Tbh that sounds like a really good name for a mediocre country band.
0:42—I know dan’s joking about the sims people creating the toddler expansion because of them, but how funny would it be if that was actually true? (I mean, I wouldn’t be surprised if there was a small spike in sales after they started playing the Sims 4, the game creators must love Deppy’s free advertisement).
0:54—Dan affectionately hitting Phil’s arm
1:28—The water sound effect when Phil says “let’s dive in” :thumb:
1:34—Phil: “Santa’s going to sell us to Satan if we don’t sell it soon.” This whole video Dan’s genuinely impressed and supportive of Phil and I’m so here for that.
2:46—Phil hating on the outside lamp with his hand all contemplatively gripping his chin = my aesthetic
2:56—You know Phil’s going to be a great father b/c he tells the world’s lamest jokes.
3:18—Track 1 of Deppy’s 2017 Mixtape: The Suckling. Got a feeling this one won’t win a Grammy.
5:06—Phil leaning back in his chair with his arms folded and his unamused face
5:28—I am so happy they dressed Dil in jean shorts and a crop top. Phil isn’t a fan though…thoughts y?
5:39—re: Dil’s outfit
Dan: “[…] see, the wife approves.”
Phil: “okay, she approves.”
This is kind of a weird interaction, I wonder what they talked about before the jumpcut?
5:56—Track 2 of Deppy’s Mixtape: Mirror Butt: A Saga. Dan’s support for Phil’s solo is inspirational.
6:09—Deppy’s new branding confirmed: Party Dan & Phil, butts all day & snorting crack all night.
7:01—Phil: “It's true.” Deppy’s weekend plans confirmed, traveling and writing bad fanfiction phanfiction together. As Dan eloquently put it, “this is what I subscribe for.”
7:15—Phil retracts his distaste for Dil’s outfit.
7:54—Chilling on the fireworks effect, instead shelling out nine pounds for the glitter effect. I can get on board with this.
8:12—Track 3 of their mixtape: “Dab’s Bedroom Floor Lullaby.”
9:13—Phil: “This is really weird, I’m uncomfortable.” Phil’s blatant kinkshaming it’s okay phil, I too am guilty of furry prejudice.
9:27—Track 4 of their mixtape: Dab’s a Judgmental Cabbage
10:58—Phil: “I’m hyped for this,” said in the most un-hyped voice known to man.
11:43—Track 5 of their mixtape: The Repetitive Occurrence of Morning
11:52—Track 6 of their mixtape: Dan Does Not Understand the Meaning of “Shoosh”
13:07—Dan: “A charmer with cute eyes?” Dan, are you maybe thinking of the charmer with cute eyes sitting right next to you? :gg:
13:32—Dan: “Dab looks like Eliza Pancakes.” Tabs and Eliza had an affair, confirmed
13:38—Hair discussion. So, Dil has slightly wavy brown hair, Tabitha has straight black hair…Dab’s beautiful mane would be the product of a DanxPhil child, confirmed But Phil suggesting cutting Dab’s hair :tsk:
16:26—This exchange sums up Dan vs. Phil’s financial philosophies.
16:38—Dan praising phil’s cloud idea “Phil, what a lovely idea.”
16:54—Dan suggesting getting Dab a tablet to watch toy unboxing videos
then Dab can support felix's foremost rival, the 5-year-old youtuber behind “Ryan ToyReview.”
17:31—Dil might be becoming an alcoholic…
18:08—I do the same thing Dan does here with his hand, seeing him do it so often makes me feel oddly less self-conscious?
20:08: Track 7 of their mixtape: Dab’s First Poop
21:42—Track 8 of their mixtape: Inspiring Dab. FFS dan’s falsetto singing tho
22:53—LOZ sO RAndoM XD XD XD XD
23:16—Theory: Deppy adopts a child, uses the excuse that they wanted to decorate a room like Dab’s in their new house. : illuminati:
23:45—I like this little confirmation that they watch Disney movies.
23:54—Okay but imagine…Deppy falling asleep together on the living room couch while watching their foreign crime dramas :gg:
24:26—Phil softly punching dan’s face I can now die peacefully
25:08—will psychic!Phil emerge? Will Tabitha’s abductions be her downfall? Tune in next time on the “Dan & Phil sit so close together they might as well just share one chair” show.

Dan was in a positive mood, which is always awesome to see, he’s so enjoyable to watch when he’s like that. Phil seemed a bit closed off, probably tired or bored or something.

At 5:26 Phil says “I liked the…” and then there’s a jump cut. Any thoughts on what he said? There was a “j” sound I think, so maybe he said “jacket?”

It might have been discussed a while ago, but does anyone else think their reaction cam box is a bit larger than what average gaming channels have? I don’t really watch many gaming channels, though, so I might be wrong.

And please, Dan, darling…do you need me to send you some lip balm?

Well that might have been one of my favourite Sims videos so far. They were just so cute looking after Dab. I just can't.

I loved the toddler stage. I always thought The Sims 4 made a mistake for skipping straight to child.

Dab is a beautiful child. I am living for his hair.
dontpanic wrote: It might have been discussed a while ago, but does anyone else think their reaction cam box is a bit larger than what average gaming channels have? I don’t really watch many gaming channels, though, so I might be wrong.
Yes it is much bigger. I don't know if it is because there is two of them so the box needs to be bigger to see both of them. I only really watch Mark and Jack so they can make the box smaller as there is only one of them.
It could also be that they know at lot of people watch the gaming videos to watch them not the actual games. The bigger the box, the more we can see them.

Comparison of the boxes.

Exactly my thoughts in that moment thank you

I also noticed the reaction box being in the way of some important parts in this video and was wondering how well they know which section of the game screen will be visible or not...

Re: quality content. I completely agree with you, fancybum and sia, imo Dan tends to take himself and DINOF a tad too seriously. It's weird because I've always felt that DINOF's content was more calibrated for Youtube audience than AP. Maybe because most vloggers I watch are French and mostly use DINOF's formula, I'm not sure about English-speaking vloggers. AP's videos have always seemed more spontaneous and somewhat more creative to me.

As you said, Phil tends to be more carefree regarding his interests. I don't think that the reason is that he doesn't care what people think, it's more that it doesn't immediately occur to him to check popular opinion on things he enjoys. On the contrary, when he likes something, Dan seems the kind to seek good and bad opinions about this thing on the spot, and feels the need to justify himself if popular opinion is against him. Knowing that, I find their creative approaches interesting to watch :D

@coffeepenguin I find the fact that Tomska and Superwoman mentioned Dan, it puts things into perspective because with super woman I consider her a way "biggger" youtuber, and yet she's trying to appeal to Dans demographic. I can't tell if it's because he's legitimately respected (I'm always skeptical about youtubers motives though) or not.
also I legitimately can't tell if Dan is going bald fast or if his shaved sides are revealing a bad hairline (no judgement my hairline sucks too) doesn't matter either way though, I'm just curious..?

Just dropped by to say that I really love the new DAPG vid! I mean, I've watched all of Deppy's Sim Episodes, but the only one that I actually rewatch is when Tabitha first got abducted. I really love the video because watching it makes me all happy and warm and fuzzy, and because Love-Eyes Lester is, like, all over the video.
I really agree with Phil, by the way, because they shouldn't buy a tablet for Dab at such a young age. Dab needs to learn to play with his toys first before playing on a tablet. If they did buy a tablet for Dab, that will, like, take away the essence of childhood. You know what I'm saying? And also...they should put Drago away. Who knows what that thing will do (remember that story with a supposedly-inanimate toy clown in that child's room, but is actually a guy? Yeah, that one?). Another thing? Dil's outfit. It's not that bad, but... Okay, I think that it's bad, but, like, can't Deppy get another party outfit or something?

Warning, I finally caught up with the thread so I apologize for my long-winded, unintelligible rambling. Also sorry for the double posting!!!!
artdefines06:
(I'm really counting on people remembering that Rachel came on here with another name and asked questions about herself to try to start drama, otherwise that joke will fall flat)
This is literally my #1 favorite thing that’s happened on this forum. I promise I will pass on these memories to all generations to come.
uglyamerican:
Dan seems torn between sounding too posh / educated?, and being true to oneself. He admits to adjusting his usage so he doesn't seem too "posh."
This is actually something I’ve always found interesting about him, and it’s totally been discussed before but one day when we’re low on content I hope dan’s attitude towards his voice emerges. He’s implied and vaguely talked about being bullied for how he speaks, he made a whole video over-explaining the way he speaks, and even the tone and manner of how he speaks seems to change based on his confidence in his environment.
fancybum:
Like I'm worn down at this point, the energy to continue being upset or surprised about a lot of things has just left my body, I am a shell, but for things like this (less so 'internet drama' a la Blackery, more so actual concerning hate speech that adds no value to the world (in humour, in commentary, in entertainment unless you're jerking it to 4chan daily) outside of plain old boring and hateful shock value), like... don't do that, Dan.
[offtopic]
I totally agree with your sentiments, although I wonder if dan’s up to date with the #pewdiepieDrama? I know Deppy quotes a pewdiepie video in happy wheels, but the video they reference is one that talks specifically about youtube culture and content creation, whereas Felix’s recent significantly offensive comments occur in insignificant fluff/filler videos. I’m inclined to believe dan when he says he doesn’t keep up to date with other youtubers, so I’ve been thinking it could be possible Dan & Phil didn’t know Felix’s recent actions. The tumblr blogs he follows probably aren’t going to be talking about that, and unless you’re searching youtube related things pewdiepie isn’t a frontrunner on news sites.
They would of course know Felix in general has done a lot of problematic things, but they could just be unaware of anything he’s done that would suggest they distance himself. Their relationship with Felix seems like “we have to be friendly with him because our good friend is friends with him.
Although Deppy did know Felix photoshopped Phil in one of his recent videos, so they could be sufficiently informed of his recent actions...although Phil definitely received a lot of screenshots of it from fan tweets so that doesn’t mean they watch a great number of his videos… idk what I’m even saying anymore
[/offtopic]
re: quality content
I’m not going to ramble, but why wouldn’t dan’s current/recent content be considered quality? I’ve got the impression he finds (most) of his dinof content “quality,” and when he’s talking about his dinof videos he seems to mean he wants to keep that status of quality content. I mean, compare most other youtubers to dan’s “I almost blinded myself” video and the roast yourself video. All the “bedroom vloggers” I can think of do mostly unscripted challenge or collab videos with minimal amounts of editing, which is how they churn them out so quick. You can tell dan spent an inordinate amount of time creating those videos and it pays off because of his dedication to it—he get 2 million views in the first week of posting, which is something a lot of more subscribed youtubers can’t achieve, and that’s because he makes content people find worthwhile to watch.
Dan usually seems fairly proud of the work he puts out, even the infamous isg videos, so when we say “dan needs to just put out that quality content instead of talking about it” why would we assume the content he’s putting out isn’t something he defines as quality? Truth or Dare was a long time ago, and I definitely could be wrong but I don’t think he’s ever categorized any of his more recent videos the same way. well F I rambled anyway

And I find it more like dan wants to be proud of what he puts on his channel rather than taking himself too seriously (I find someone like Jack Howard worthy of that title).

I don’t really find sexism in dan’s sentiments towards this topic (if anything I would say ageist), but rather I think a small part of him wishes for an audience who sees him as a content creator rather than a cute boy on youtube. I think he knows that his audience truly does like him for his work instead of just his face, but I don’t fault him for sometimes doubting that (like y’all said, he’s bombarded by the vocal minority’s blatantly sexual messages, and other youtubers aren’t much better).

As for Phil’s attitude towards this, well I think [sia] sums it up in one sentence:
so maybe he is not just a money hungry person but actually kind of progressive in that way that he believes that any entertainment that makes some person happy is valid

I've had the worst headache for the past day so not doing timestamps, though honestly the ones posted on here are amazing, and I'd just be repeating people. But instead some thoughts:

Dan's livestream:
- Love the inclusion of Phil, to the point of correcting himself. The more time passes the more I think their I/my language is really just muscle memory at this point and they're actively trying to change that up.
- Dan and his two modes, full on nihilist and wholesome.
- Dan and his Freudian slip with the bakery.
- Neutral response to Troye's video, he praised it but kept it centered on Troye not the subject of the video.
- His 'wtf' and not entirely pleased expression when first asked about Phil and his child, leading into amusement and playing along once he realized what it was.
- Throwback to all the times he's done it before, but comparing himself to Phil looks-wise. He really holds straight, dark hair and pale skin to a physical ideal, doesn't he?

Dil video:
- Motherfucker. They're cute.
- Phil really got excited over potty training.
- That's all.

The Dan-and-quality conversation:
I think Dan is constantly striving to make the videos on his main channel better and better quality, and often unsure of how to reach that. I'm not even sure Dan really knows what he wants dinof to be, but he knows what it was and feels pressure to maintain that while also seemingly hating everything he made in the past that make the channel the quality level it is.

On another note: How much clearly does he have to be that fear of judgement is what holds him back? I don't think he's ever been shy about that. But I think Dan is the kind of person who will rarely be satisfied with anything that he makes himself. He will always feel judged and take the critique more to hear than the praise, because I think he gets the praise in such high volume that it stops having any meaning coming from us. He cares about the numbers, and he cares about the opinion of people who aren't going to tell him that he's the best no matter what. The gaming channel is something he's allowed some pride in because it's half Phil's and he's not going to outright regularly drag something Phil did. That must be freeing for Dan.

A Phil interjection:
I wonder if Phil's new creative projects will be for AmazingPhil or if he actually feels the same as Dan, that his main channel has an actual purpose and needs to be reserved for that purpose? The last time Phil really did something creative and just for him it went on his channel, but he is living a vastly different Youtuber life now compared to then.

Maybe I need to rewatch Dan's latest LS, but I don't get the impression that Dan takes himself too seriously; he seems more self-deprecating / aware to me. Anyway, I sensed that Dan was casting a bit of shade at the type of YouTuber that consider themselves "film makers." (I have to be careful what I say because i actually work in the film biz.) My impression is that Dan doesn't, but considers himself a storyteller / entertainer / comedian, which he is IMO. But he also wants to be able to express his opinion on more serious matters, and I'll support him on that. However, he needs to be careful because "celebrity" opinion is not always respected by a broader audience, both the opinion itself, and the motivation behind it. But I'm usually in agreement with what he opines, but let's just say we have, ahem, "intersecting" musical tastes.

I agree with all of this. I know you’re speaking generally, but I want to clarify since I didn’t make it clear in all my rambling: I’m not criticizing Dan’s content when I talk about how he approaches it. I even enjoy ISG, but it’s definitely an “easier” video to make since it has a set template (find questions, answer entertainingly, alcohol) so he doesn’t have to stress over a new idea from scratch. But even if he can stand behind the quality of stuff he’s done, I can’t really believe he cares all that much about exam prep as a 25 year old not in school. So like good for him making a video he liked that could help (?) other people, but , he’s capable of better. Honestly his roast was my favourite vid of his last year, so even doing a tag can lead to great things when he wants them to.

Idk, once you reach a certain level of success in a creative field (+ age/experience), your creativity (in certain respects) tends to suffer. Or maybe not creativity, but relatability in how he expresses it (which is only an issue if he wants to be relatable, and I would say he does). Just how he grew out of Truth or Dare, he’s (probably?) grown out of stuff like ‘What not to do at the beach’ and more adolescent topics like that, and experiences that aren’t relevant anymore to the life he’s living. So I’m really curious what’s on his alleged list of ideas these days, because if it’s just pandering stuff like his exam prep vid, no thanks. If it’s more sketchy storytime videos about his own experiences, then sure. Beyond those options, I literally have no idea what he’s left with (and maybe that’s a good thing and I’ll be wonderfully surprised with whatever he ends up doing). But I understand the pressure and I'm not criticizing him for placing it on himself either, I just wish he didn't stress so much but I also know that's easier said than done. So.. yeah. I lost my train of thought, but anyway! Good post.

I am still so confused about animosity people have for Dan's exam video. Sure, it's not a struggle he can relate to right now, but he's been through it recently enough to remember the painful details (let me tell you about law school exams... they stay with you forever.)

It was not like he made a sincere exam rant video, it was a humourous videos with sketches and self depreciation. He doesn't really have to care that much about exams to make a good funny video about them. I doubt TomSka really cares about clones, you know.

Granted, but Tomska also doesn't take great care explaining over and over how he wants to be authentic with his content and true to his creative integrity. He says he sets out to make sketches that are funny and that people watch, and then he does. He has a set number he's working toward this year, and he'll most likely do it (though granted he has a business and employees so comparing them in this way doesn't quite work). Dan sets himself up for this by saying one thing, then doing another. If he could just let himself say, "I was on tour and didn't have much inspiration and it was around exam time, so this is what I came up with for the sake of my audience and I think it turned out pretty funny, so whatever, enjoy" we could all relax about it. But he doesn't do that. So. He's being judged by the standards he's set for himself and he's made them pretty high.

I guess for me, I view the exam topic as primarily a vehicle for his humor and don't see how that's unauthentic, and then if he says he genuinely wanted to help people out I don't know why that's unauthentic too. That just requires assumptions he lied. Some older people gave me pretty fly exam advice.

That's a good point, I'm probably overly projecting what I think he means by 'authenticity' when it doesn't need to be quite so narrow a definition. I also just have no personal attachment to exams anymore lol so that's why it's such a big miss for me at least. That darn relatability issue cuts both ways. Maybe it's funnier than I remember, but I don't even have the will to watch it again. But I like your perspective on it and I'll keep it in mind for his upcoming vids
