[offtopic]Speaking of their tastes in film and TV and stuff, I'm a little disheartened by Phil finding Moonlight boring, though he's definitely entitled to say so. I've not seen it yet so I can't say for sure and my opinion means diddly squat but the trailer alone made me really want to see it and yes, it does look culturally important. Interesting that he said he felt Interstellar got snubbed. I loved it but it was so full of flaws that I couldn't really ignore...

I feel like I'm the only one who wasn't that bothered about San Junipero so I was a bit disappointed when Dan said it was his favourite Black Mirror episode. Again, I can see why he and many other people would like it, and many of my friends say it was their favourite episode. And hooray for LGBTQ+ representation. Both the girls were gorgeous, too. I think maybe because it was portrayed as a happy ending when the feel of the ending was actually really sinister to me. I feel so alone in this opinion haha[/offtopic]

[offtopic]^ oops, can't edit, but I realised afterwards that I contradicted myself massively by saying I was disappointed that Phil found a critically a claimed LGBT film boring yet I then went on to say I wasn't a big fan of the widely liked LGBT episode of Black Mirror. I'll just shut up [/offtopic]

Don't worry, I was a bit disheartened by it too if I'm honest. It was a slow-paced film with very little action, but I thought the subtlety of it was what made it so moving. To each their own, I guess

As for San Junipero, I loved it in part because it was about two women but also because I really loved the concept - I'm absolutely terrified of death so the idea of a way to in some way cheat death was very appealing to me. Plus the fact that they got (what I viewed as) a happy ending felt like a nice reprieve from the terrifying bleakness of the other episodes. I didn't personally find it sinister but I can see how you would!
flurry wrote: Also, what's with the increasing La La Land backlash haha - it's not a film which wants to deal with serious issues - the point is to throwback to those happy Hollywood musicals aka Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers so it never even set out to discuss heavy issues anyway; hence it's a bit pointless to point out a flaw that it didn't even mean to address? I wonder if I'm making sense.
I loved La La Land, I cried multiple times and even wrote dnp fic inspired by it, but I think the backlash against the film is very valid. The main criticism I've seen is that Ryan Gosling plays a white man trying to save jazz, when jazz was founded by black people and is such an important part of black history. The film is really lacking in diversity, and there is something off to me about a white guy being the only character to truly understand jazz while the only main black character (John Legend's character) is positioned in opposition to Gosling as lacking in authenticity by attempting to modernise jazz and make it overly-produced. I thought it was visually really beautiful and the storyline was heartbreaking, but I do personally think that it isn't as deserving of the Oscar as Moonlight.

(also apologies for the complete off-topicness of this post, but it's not like there's much else to talk about anyway)

warning: opinions, mine.
As a whole, I thought Moonlight was a bit slow, maybe not boring, but at times I hoped for more something (idk what, but just a feeling I had). The acting was great, the kid and the teen (i never know anyones name, shame on me) were superb, and the movie had great moments for each phase of his life. I also enjoyed that no one was made out to be a victim, there were consequences, unfairness, judgement, but also, hope, self-realization.
I did not like Manchester by the Sea, that bored me, I didn't care about the characters, their stuff, nothing interested me. I haven't seen Arrival, people have made it sound watchable, so it's on my list. But the biggest mystery is why I'm not more in love with Hidden Figures, a movie that should be 'right up my alley'. And yet, it left some fake/plastic-y feeling. It had all the parts I want, and yet, it seemed (probably all in my head, but what can I do) too polished. I can't put into words what I mean so I'll leave it at that. La La land, I enjoyed watching it, but that's it. I took nothing away, it was very narrow and I didn't see it as a return to 'old hollywood' the music wasn't that good, it was shiny and forgettable, and the lack of diversity in this modern 'old hollywood' style movie is blinding.

Personally although Moonlight should probably win because of how culturally important it is, I think most of the nominees are deserving. I just hope Casey Affleck wins best actor because imo he was fantastic.

I understand why people are disappointed in Phil for dismissing Moonlight, but you can find a movie boring while still appreciating it's groundbreaking qualities. I'm kind of playing the devil's advocate here though because he didn't really do that. I guess it might be hard for him to appreciate it in his position of privilege which isn't entirely his fault. I feel like I'm not expressing my opinion well hopefully you get what I mean.

it took me awhile to see it so at first I thought you were talking about Dan's nose!

But seriously that haircut is amazing, it looks like he purposely got one that would suit his curly hair (it's a little longer in the bangs area I'm guessing because you lose so much length when your hair is curly)

Dan and Misc Watch 2017
WHAT DOES HAPPINESS SMELL LIKE? (Week 7)

Prompted Dan Mention
35:10 (chat) Dan told us about the troll wig
“Did you want to see that? Because I kind of took it to the charity shop, it’s gone, sorry guys” “I didn’t know this was a thing! I’m sorry, he didn’t tell me”
Unprompted Dan Mention
25:40 “Although I wouldn’t want to be a sim controlled by Dan and Phil, ‘cause that would be a huge mistake"

42:20 “We watched Speed, Dan and I watched Speed. See, I’m trying to do the whole ‘Dan and I’, instead of ‘me and Dan’, slip it in, it’s the correct grammar."
Neutral Dan Mention
38:15 “We played My Horse Prince which Dan chose. I didn’t know what to expect- I was quite quiet in that video because I was just like, ‘I can’t process what’s happening right now’”
“It’s had such an overwhelming response, we’re definitely going to play it again."
(chat) What’s your gaming channel
"It is DanAndPhilGAMES”

43:20 flash sale on danandphilshop for the 2017 calendars, 50% off with code ‘FLASHSALE’
“you’ve still got 11 months of Dan and Phil calendar action"
Miscellaneous
2:30 “I’m doing something, I’m finally doing something right! It was one of my New Year’s resolutions to keep the houseplants alive, so it’s happening.”
-Randomly made me think of how in rehabilitation programs you’re supposed to spend time nurturing a plant successfully before moving onto animals or relationships. First keep plants alive, then move onto dogs.. ahem.

5:10 had a haircut, talked with Fabrice about dogs the whole time: “I could talk about dogs in any state of awakeness."

10:00 googling animal facts, offended people are so dumb they couldn’t tell a pig and a hippo apart (I mean he didn’t say it like that, but we’re all thinking it)

20:15 (after geeking out over the new planets) “So maybe just leave them alone, if they’re happy”
20:55 (chat) Do you believe in aliens though
"Yes! Because if you think about it, [..] in our sample area, there’s a 1 in 9 chance of having life on a planet. So if the universe is infinite, as in it goes on forever, there’s gotta be another one.”
[uh he’s talking about parallel dimensions and not planets right now lol but I appreciate his enthusiasm]
and there’s another one where Phil is on ‘Nowyou’ being stroked by his shrimp prince
"If there’s infinite universes, that means there’s infinite possibilities…"
21:58 (chat) What is a shrimp prince?
“I don’t know”
-Horse Prince residue on the brain plus the shrimp dimension from Buffy = shrimp prince, and with that I’ve solved Phil’s brain
-also we know about furries and scalies, now where does shrimp fit or does it have its own sect

22:15 “So I do believe in aliens, yes, and I think it might be a little bit silly not to"

22:55 “What film should you watch? Arrival. Go see Arrival if you’re gonna watch one of the Oscar nominated films because it’s my favourite [of those nominated].”
-The man likes sci-fi let him live. He wasn’t asked which film was most ~important~ he was just asked to recommend one and he went with the one that entertained him most

27:08 can of happiness scent also smells of “Power. See, [the other scents] were all quite nice, and then it got to ‘power’ and I’m a bit like… do I have to distance myself from you, Mr. Hapiness Scent?”
#woke

29:40 (about Moonlight) “I did enjoy it, but I got slightly bored, which is unlike me. It’s one of those you’ve got to think, and it’s quite harrowing. But it was objectively a good film.”
-I mean it’s probably not very unlike him since it’s the kind of film Dan waits to watch when Phil’s away, is it not? - depressing and political. Reality sucks, aliens and plastic musicals are a nice escape, I get it

32:20 (chat) Fav Lost character?
“I really loved Sun and Jin. And Juliet.”
-Good choices. Really the only wrong choices are Jack and Kate. Mostly Jack.

32:40 (about Final Fantasy XV) “It took me a little while to get into it, but I’m loving it. It’s so good. You’re basically just 4 bros on a bro roadtrip in a car.”
(chat) A 'bro-oadtrip'
“Yeah, I wish there was a little more diversity in it. It’s very like, you’re just 4 guys in a car. There could’ve been a girl in the car, you know, but there’s not.” “It could’ve been 4 girls on a quest together, I would’ve equally wanted to play that game.”

37:45 (chat) Chicken!
“Yes, I agree”
-gave up an opportunity to drag Dan there, but whatevs
Phinal Tally: said ‘Dan’ 9 times

Dan and Phil Watch 2017 Week 7:
Dan mentioning Phil: 22/59.5 minutes = 0.37 per min.
Phil mentioning Dan: 9/47.5 minutes = 0.19 per min.

Enjoyable enough liveshow but I’ve learned a few times now that if Chris stays on and I have to choose between the two, Phil’s show can wait. Important information learned in Chris’s show: Phil kicks dogs. Do you need any further context for that? Nah.

Also noted he didn't do any cliffhangering for Dan's show, just the upcoming DAPG vid, maybe that's the pattern: Dan promos Phil, Phil promos vids, vids promo... D&P (leading back into merch/liveshows/other vids). Or it's not intentional and Dan just feels like promoing Phil for the sake of it, I don't know. Excited for the gaming vid, will be very happy if it's on the sofa and not a PC game, but I have no guesses as to what the game could be. The way they've been going, it could literally be anything. Yay!

brilliant. Enjoying the recent conversations a lot. I loved Phil's diplomatic (or forgetful) "Yes, I agree" about "chicken". So glad for this gaming video tonight, whatever it is.

2017 rebranding includes Phil jumping on that Kink Train that Dan's been hogging for too long, and tbh I'm here for it. Furries are out, shellies are in, and as Martha Stewart might say, it's a good thing.

No shade intended, but lol. You're disappointed at his opinion about a film you haven't seen yourself.

Lol, Phil likes to plan a whack. That was fun, Phil kept smiling adorably and saying "spank", Dan was obnoxious, the angles were slightly mindblowing. I wasn't convinced when I saw the thumbnail, but that was funny. Tiger Lester indeed.

Upon watching this new video, I have decided that what it needs is Innuendo Time Stamps, so here they are, folks:

4:02 - "Phil is aiming right down the crack." (This is just a personal fave tbh.)
5:58 - "Are you gonna aim for the hole or is the hole not the goal?" (Dan's face... )
6:11 - "Time for Danny to put it right in there."
7:30 - "I wonder if there's collision on our balls."
9:21 - "I've actually blown the ball in a golf club." (Another personal fave.)
9:57 - Just... this whole convo about Phil liking to plan a whack. Send help.
11:01 - "Straight in the hole... Damn, that's like 100% chance of pregnancy. Good swimmers."

Anyway. I thoroughly and entirely enjoyed this video. It was silly and combined with all the Dan lean-ins and Phil smooshing Dan's face for a second there. Chicken Soup for the Phan Trash Soul.

Thoughts on the video
  • dan is danisnotonfire so... keeping the brand? if he was planning on changing it they could've just called themselves dan & phil.
  • "somebody cute carrying your things" no mention of gender (((:

I loved this video I watched it while drinking a beer and suffering from stomach aches (I am aware that drinking beer is not the smartest choice of drink in that situtation), so it was a much appreciated distraction. Neither of them was way better than the other, so it was very pleasing to watch

I really hoped Phil would win though (as usual). He was better at getting the ball in the hole when he knew where it was but Dan managed the difficult courses better (often through luck or learning from Phil's mistakes though), which explains why Dan won in the end.

I don't know where Phil finds all of this crap. It's unbelievable. Those hats are amazing, but I can't believe people sell stuff like that :wtf: Why does it surprise me, I should know better...

I'd love to see another video about this. Maybe also as a regular video so we can see them working together.

Phil's eyes actually widened at that almost kiss bit as well (13:45) and he stared at the camera... Hmm
And an almost hug at 18:40
