A few days ago me and my friend got tipsy and had a great fun i.e. laughed out asses off scrolling Dan's twitter and imagining Stephen Fry seeing his tweets in feed and his reactions.I'm so sad he's left twitter :sobs:
Anyone has an answer to this mystery?
No worries! Anyways, perhaps because of Charlie (of the "issocoollike" variety, not the "skies" variety)? Since Stephen Fry did his outtro perhaps he followed Charlie and saw Dan through that connection? Apparently Stephen Fry watched Charlie's videos, so...what if Dan once came up in the recommended videos section. haha my god.

Also, while doing research on this, I found an article from 2013 where Dan was listed as the 44th most popular British tweeter, so I'm not surprised.

I also found this on a stephen fry fan site and i want more of the story.
esso wrote: Edit: I'd also like to know how Ezra and Dan ended up following each other. They both like Evangelion, so one of my secret dreams is to have Dan and Ezra watch anime together and talk about it.
This is hilarious and I wish there were more interactions between the two.

While it is a bit of puzzler how they came to follow each other (most likely Dan first, through seeing Ezra's humorous tweets that gained a lot of traction or through just being a fan of VW), it makes total sense. Those two are so similar to me, with Ezra's brand of humor being the weirdness Dan could achieve if he wasn't worried about being relatable to a more generalized group of people. Also the anime connection is real.

Also, not sure if this has ever been discussed before, but I once went through all the people dan follows on twitter and the first two people he followed (according to the way twitter lists followers, at least, which I'm pretty sure is reverse chronological order) were Brittany Spears and Phil. Oh dan.

I'll take a swing. I don't think there's much else beyond what he said in the video. He doesn't like to think about death because he likes being alive and being around people he loves. He's very content with life and something just occurred to me.

What if he has a bit of a sore spot with death because of his best friend (the one mentioned in DML) dying? I could see him thinking the like of "it's not fair" "he could've lived a long and happy life". Plus, it just coincided with my headcanon that Phil retracts to less serious topics like robots when he doesn't feel comfortable, and it could've been a way of preventing it from getting too deep for him?

Add in the fact that he lives with Dan? Mr. The-Inevitability-Of-Death? He's probably had to endure an earful of that at least once (and i could only imagine after hearing your other best friend talk about death so frequently with his existential crises... :sobs: )
That must be quite depressing for someone that has dealt with death a couple of times. I think Dan's crisis goes more on the "Anything I do doesn't really matter because the universe is infinite+everrybody will eventually die" type of thing than talking abt death, like the main issue is not death itself and that's why they can get along/Phil was a good supporting system during Dan's worst time.

It is quite telling how much he avoids anything getting too serious or too real. Might be te schtick of "I just want people to smile" and talking abt death or other serious topics is not the way to go. Kinda sad to think that his way to cope with things is not talking about them (at least not in public). I do hope he does talks abt this stuff in private.
The fact that he doesn't want to talk about it in the video, where everyone can see, doesn't mean he doesn't like to talk about it with Dan, who he is very close to. I actually think that's why he get along so well with Dan, they share the same opinion about a lot of things. So maybe when Dan talk about his crisis Phil might talk about it as well, as in they confide in each other. uh i'm not good at articulating edit: i mean that in a 'avoiding talking about death in a video is not necessarily only because he is scared to think about it, but also because he doesn't like to talk about it with a stranger' way. I mean there are topics that i really, really don't want to think about and don't want to get brought up in a casual conversation but i can talk about it with the person i'm very closest to just bring a lot of tissues.

Anyway when i first watch his answer, i thought 'wow he must have been very content with his life' because i'm very much the exact opposites.

I really enjoyed the Tipsy Talk although they weren't tipsy enough and definitely think this was more Phil and less of the AmazingPhil 'persona', maybe just because he's known Hazel for a long time and is really comfortable with her? The chemistry was great and I loved Hazel appreciating how Phil's mind works, she really bounced off him well when he was going on random tangents. The talk about death was really interesting and definitely makes more sense knowing that a close friend of his died when he was at uni..
Super curious now as to what they filmed for Phil's channel, the description on Hazel's said it'd be up tomorrow and I have no idea what to expect but with their chemistry it should be good!

I liked it, I was even able to tune out how much my ears can't stand the sound of Hazel's voice

Phil was definitely more on a sugar high than anywhere near tipsy, but whatever. I feel like we got more of a glimpse from Phil Lester than AmazingPhil which is always nice. The way he spoke and stuff was just... different. It was good. Wouldn't say no to more of that on his channel in the future.

About the subject of death... Phil was affected enough by his friends' death that he, a private person, included it in his DML which could potentially lead to fans going digging on the internet for it or something. So it must've had quite an impact on him.

I have errands to run but I wanted to leave in my thoughts on the new collab before I went out.

So many instances of Phil going into his squeaky high pitched defensive voice thing. Idk why I love it so much, but I do, and I accept that.
Also lots of soft spoken Phil and casual side comments Phil, this video is A+ on the Phil voice range. (I don't really know what I'm on about, either.)

Some of Hazel's comments seemed passive aggressive to me, but I think I'm the only one who thought that, so I won't think too hard about it. Idk, it seems like a lot of people enjoy making snarky comments about the Dan and Phil fanbase, and maybe it's out of jealousy, maybe it's just them being silly and friendly, I don't know, but I'll take it as a grain of salt. I guess I'm just a sensitive person and I always end up feeling alienated and forgotten about as an older-ish fan. (I also couldn't imagine being in their shoes and having people sort of poke fun at the source of your career, but like I said, I'm a sensitive person. I'll stop caring about it lol. I'm sure they really don't care.)
Regardless, I absolutely love Hazel. I digress.

I'm late to comment on it, but just wanted to declare how ecstatic I am for Martyn and Cornelia. I was wondering if they would be coming, or if someone else would handle their stuff, as 3 months is quite a bit of time. But I'm Cornelia trash, so I'm all for it.

yes, its so odd- his persona (gah im sorry) literally affects his voice, like their is such a huge difference in his speech with this vid and some DAPG vids. just weird to me how much of a huge wall is between Phil the person, and AmazingPhil the youtuber.
will we ever know him?

Looooooooved Tipsy Talk!

1, I want the recipe for a "Hazel". Sounded good! also want a Phil to make it for me and get him properly smashed and have a weird/drunk chat with, but I can manage my expectations on that front! Sugar high Phil is up there with "DA-DA-DA-DA-DA-DA-DAN!!!" over-excited Phil.
2, anyone else inhale sharply when it got onto making friends into immortal robots and especially at "Hazel, let's not even go there" :?
3, J-Law doesn't poop. She eats homemade cupcakes, decides on dresses based on what time of the month it is and falls over a lot though. She's my hero.

today on phil is my slytherin prince:
he's just so in control of the public perception of himself, to a point where he even *makes* the drink and is in charge or distributing it, because he wants to be on alert, doesn't want the walls to slip, so this way, he knows what he's drinking, and he can stop when he wants (generally, refills are a very common thing on tipsy talk, you know? this was, if anything, sugar high talk)
he starts off by interviewing *hazel*, for god's sake, it's amazing, she barely even notices
when she brings up real stuff, he gets jokey and tries playing it off several times, because this is not what AP is about, right?
he even brings a prop chicken to fill the time with, to control the tone of the interview & make it lighthearted rather than deeply introspective I AM SO FASCINATED THIS ISN'T A JUDGEMENT IT'S JUST LIKE, WOW, WATCHING YOU WORK IS KINDA AMAZING
(loved it though, it was fun and funny and you could tell they like each other & would actually hang out privately. makes all the difference. also, hazel is so pretty and )

More on when Dan followed Ezra vice-versa talk
So, we know he was a fan at least by the end of 2013. There's no way to know when someone followed someone else on twitter, but I think its safe to wager that he probably followed Ezra by then? Who knows. I'm just adding this as the first record on twitter of dan's appreciation for him

It's possible Phil's vid is a day late because of internet issues in Florida or something? It's close enough that I'd expect they planned to upload at the same time but something came up on Phil's end and Hazel had already announced what date hers would be?
Does anyone remember when these collabs were filmed? There might be footage of her visiting them in Hazel's March TOTM when that comes out soonish :)
Edit: Just checked and they filmed March 4th so fingers crossed

I like the tipsy talk very much, it's nice to see Phil being very relaxing in a collab and having fun. But i do have to object, he is not tipsy at all.

The death comment is especially interesting, it seems like he doesn't share Dan's view on death at all. Dan seems to think that death itself is not scary, what is scary is that nothing left after death. But Phil seems to fear death itself rather than what death brings. Dan thinks death is inevitable, you can only achieve immortality through your legacy but Phil thinks that immortality is possible as long as you physically existing.

Interesting.
oqua wrote: Back on some other forum akui once said something like, "Dan sighed and was silent for 5 second and then put on a smile and moved on and that was the realest I've ever seen him." Well, I would like to say something similar about Phil: Phil squirmed and joked about robots when confronted with the idea of death and that was like the realest I've seen him...possibly ever.
Awww i think this the most Phil he ever been in front of the camera but that's not enough! Not far enough Phil!

But maybe this is who he is, there are ppl that just naturally not deep thinker.

Also i would like to say Phil, if nobody dies that means earth will be over populated, and there aren't enough resources for all of us, so even though we don't die, we are gonna live in misery, like in famine or war.

:D That would be a video to watch. Somehow i think this is one of those rare topics that they don't really discuss privately either. They are both pretty young so your own mortality is still a topic that stays abstract. How do you even think about death anyway? Can living human beings really phantom what total oblivion means? How do you ponder your own non-existence? I know i stay away from thinking about my death or that of the ones i love. You just get sad. All we can say to death is "not today!" and save up for that cryonic vat, right Walt Disney?

It would really nice to see their reflective sides come out. I think both Phil and Dan are the sort of people who, when not on camera, can have hour long chats about life, love, death and every philosophical topic under the sun.

sidenote: Dan follows @KimKierkegaard on twitter. It's hillarious. It brings you "The philosophy of Søren Kierkegaard mashed with the tweets and observations of Kim Kardashian."

kudos

Also, I think that Phil doesn't like to talk about death because is not something where his usual way of dealing things will help, it will also break his AP persona and is quite a controversial topic and maybe triggering for someone.
As for him talking about that with Dan, maybe when they are typsy, yes.

Regarding hazel comments...why she had to specify that if Phil opened a bar it will be full of teen girls. (but in general I don't like her and jack's comments)

Haha, that's great. Reminds me of the time he responded to a tweet (which was in response to his should-we-have-doritos-or-popcorn tweet) that said "sartre's claim that we live in anguish because we are free reminds me a lot of you" with "i find that principle applies to my life far too often but i love that this tweet in particular made you think of it." Wonder if dan has ever read some existential literature to go with his brand.
