but my problem is that it's always made either over sexualised on tumblr or it's done in fanart where he's like... embarrassed and blushing and, again, sexualised? he's wearing a lot more sort of loose, flowy clothes now and i can imagine he'd wear stuff thats like that but a little more of a dress or skirt shape over jeans if he thought he'd get away with it. and i think he'd look good, so if he decides its what he wants to wear and not just what he admires on others then i'd support 100%
drawing him in a stereotpically japanese school girl outfit though, thats messed up on a number of levels.

I think phantheraglama posted a drawing of Dan as marble princess and Phil as carpet prince when Dan posted that picture the other day and it kind of turned into an au and that's why people draw him in dresses again. Idk I thought it was quite cute

Ah okay! I'm not criticizing it I just didn't know where it came from haha. There are certainly cute pics with that theme!

I stand corrected, he has mentioned of it. But it’s still weird for me that people are actually saying things like he should wear a dress to break down gender roles ect. Like maybe Dan does not actually want to wear a dress and maybe he doesn’t want to be the one who is going to break downs those roles.

This is part of the reason why I feel like they wouldn’t actually come out. Suddenly everything will be about their sexuality (and their relationship) and even if they don’t want to, they will be put in the positions of being role models and the face of it all. And that may not be what they want.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading the 19 pages of this thread so far, even if it took me about 2&1/2 hours.
The only thing I have to add: about the quiff thing, I really don't see it as persona switching. I see it as a "fuck my forehead is sweaty and my hair is in my eyes" thing. Yea, they keep it fringed when they're doing things in public and in videos, but that's just because they look good with it and thats how they prefer to look in any situation vs when they're done with the day and can slip into a more comfortable hairstyle. Idk the whole persona switching idea puts me off a bit and I completely disagree.
Other than that, I enjoyed the new video and it kept me awake when I got home from the airport, so I'm not complaining. Y'all are hilarious. Especially those at the beginning pages of this thread with the bisexual talk. That is all.

I guess it's like most trends, it's popular for a while and then completely disappear. Before the pastel/punk thing it was plantboy!Phil and Galaxy!Dan or something like that and, like you I had no idea where it came from

the sudden spark of drawing dan in dresses recently came from some anon bashing people drawing dan wearing dresses directed to phantheraglama, the anon called people who drew him in dresses '12 year old *insert ableist slur here* so, artists obviously retaliated to say 'hey fuck what you think!' and drew dan in dresses which is pretty nice.

That makes me think that recently I've read a phanfic in which Dan was some kind of non-binary alien who likes to wear dresses and flower crowns so that's probably where it all came from as well.
It was a nice one shot though.

I'd almost forgotten plantboy!Phil and spaceboy!Dan existed. And there's also fashionblogger!Dan and moviereviewer!Phil, which I thought was better , even though I'm not much for AUs generally. The last one came from spacecattle (who incidentally has an account here ), but I've no idea where the others originated. I guess someone comes up with the idea and/or does some popular phanart, and it snowballs from there. The tumblr phandom is good at entertaining themselves ... kind of like us.

I feel like a lot of it is similar to projecting sadness onto Dan (except when it veers into sexualizing as jaej said).

I'd usually say something like "it is fine as long as it stays within the fandom," but let's be real, nothing stays within fandoms these days. 1. You have talk show hosts asking entertainers to read fanfic about themselves 2. with youtube celebrities, it is especially hard, as they are famous for being on the internet. Also, it doesn't help that many of these tumblr posts are tagged with dan and phil's names and usernames.

However, if Dan finds his way to these drawings, I'm sure he'll be fine (I hope?). Like, he's probably seen/read a lot of these projection attempts or whatever you want to call it, and he seems to get internet culture.

This is a good point. Without ever intending to, Dan and Phil have become idols for a lot of teens who need someone/something. It has kind of been forced upon them, which happens a lot. As people, they don't owe anybody anything and there's no fault in them taking care of themselves first, but now they have the added stress of being role models and having to behave well and say inspirational things. idk it is a tough position to be in.

Tbh I quite like AU fanart and I don't think it's doing any harm because people know it's just a fantasy and doesn't necessarily have something to do with reality just as fanfics in gerneral. Of course no one should be forced into a live style they don't want to be in but as long as that doesn't happen I don't see anything wrong with it.

Tbh the way that people try to paint Dan as super girly kind of weirds me out. Sure, he has some more feminine affects to him- and its cute. But punk/pastel AU's weird me out so thoroughly. I think its because people are just getting more intensely stereotypical.
They have a fic where Dan is 'innocent' and alone and Phil is the badboy! who comes and wants to have sex with him. Always screams unhealthy relationship to me. Add in the fact that this might be the type of fic where Dan is called a slut and whatever else, and I am totally not on board. Or it might be a daddykink! fic, and I'm left wondering why I'm reading child pornography. Anyway... Sorry for the strong opinions

yeah that's what I meant, trying to make them fullfill your fantasy by giving them nail polishes or dresses is definitely pushing it too far and i think most people get that. Unfortunately there will always be people who don't and make it uncomfortable for everyone

I don't get why the phandom thinks Dan looks feminine. He doesn't really have an androgynous look to him at all imo. Maybe pre-2013 Dan, but that because he basically still a teenager and teens just look different from grown men.

I've been in enough fandoms for enough years to know that it wouldn't matter if Dan were the burliest dude ever, there would still be a niche in the fandom for him in nail polish/dresses/lingerie. Dan's specific looks and inclination toward choosing Hello Kitty mugs and pink flower crowns might perk people's interest but it's definitely not entirely due to that. In fandom terms it becomes just a trope some people dig. (But you do get into some uncomfortably crossed lines when people take the fandom trope and try to make it into something they genuinely want/expect Dan to do.)

Oh definitely. there's always gonna be people lol. But Dan looking feminine is such a widespread idea over a big part of the phandom, and it's so weird to me because imo Dan and Phil look about the same average level of 'manliness' or whatever.

As long as it's not hurting anybody I don't care though, so it's too bad the phandom is taking it too far with their nail polish obsession. They want Dan to break gender roles so badly they don't even care about his personal preferences or feelings. Ironically that's the opposite of how progressive those girls are trying to be
