Thank you so much for this, it's very helpful.alittledizzy wrote:Okay, massive Vidcon panel timestamps post under the cut. This is quick and dirty (if you can call taking 2-3 hours quick) so I probably didn't catch every word of the things I quoted and I definitely didn't timestamp every time they talked. Just the things I had thoughts on. And some of those thoughts are just me being shallow and phan trash, deal with it.
And if you couldn't bring yourself to watch the variety show I didn't do as much commenting on this but I did list out every question and D&P answers with times specifically for D&P.The First Time I Hit Upload
3:50 - Phil dreamt about being eaten by a giant lizard. Dan cutely interjects "OKAY!" - Phil says he "kinda liked it in a strange way" and Dan says something over Phil that I can't entirely make out but I'll assume it was cute too. Cute, cute, cute, everything is cute. Rainbows and sunshine and Phil-eating-lizard cute. I wonder if Phil wakes up every morning and tells Dan his dream right away? He seems to get really excited over weird dreams.
6:50 - Cereal box camera smosh lonelygirl rambled embarrassing boring whacked it up - "I don't regret it now!" "Phil doesn't regret it, guys!" "I had a different accent. "Yes!" "Welcome to my video blogs." "Phil sounded like the Starks in GOT." Dan is Phil's own mini cheerleader, supporting him after every syllable. A little annoying, a lot sweet.
12:55 - "I learned my editing skills from editing fan Buffy the Vampire Slayer music videos." "Phil [something] long before any of you." Phiiiiiil my heaaaaart. I actually didn't know this and from the reactions I don't think most people did and the fact that he divulged something we didn't know before just... ugh.
13:40 - Dan spent three weeks trying to edit his video "and then I hit up Phil for those sweet editing tips" - I actually enjoyed the wide view of this moment to see everyone else's expressions when he said that. Dan's tone here just makes me smile. He's acknowledging the joke, he's acknowledging the literal truth behind it that he did have Phil help him edit, and he's not being overly sarcastic in a way that would make it seem like mockery on either side. (Also, Phil nodding.) He also looks at Phil as he speaks. To the audience, some, but for the bulk of the story he just seems like he's telling it to Phil.
I also enjoy how Elliott is familiar with how these audiences work and tries to corrall the screaming or direct it to specific moments. When someone shouts 'I love you Dan' and it is obvious they're going to continue shouting it until they get a response he does a pointed acknowledgement and then tries to move on quickly. The same with how he says he'll announce all the names at once and let people get the screams out. Sorry, this is just a tangent into Elliott appreciation. (I'm a fan of his, can you tell?)
17:20 - Nothing new in his 'why I wanted to make videos' story. Smosh, Shane Dawson, Phil - but I still enjoy him speaking confidently about what he wanted out of youtube. I appreciate that he didn't go into the Phil aspect of it in more depth because if he had we'd have a load more 'panderingphanservicebrandinghowdarethey' comments. I also like his confidence about how he knew what kind of youtuber he wanted to be and he feels like he still is that person. Phil's answer is nothing new at all but Dan continues to interject. Phil talks over him once and Dan shuts up promptly.
29:00 - Phil talking about keeping his videos a secret is heart warming. The little gesture Dan makes when Phil says he didn't have many friends. Ughhh stop you're disgusting I hate you both (ilu keep going).
32:39 - Dan's perspective as someone who was in youtube fandom before starting youtube is nice. He falls back on it for every question but it's a genuine point of difference between him and everyone else on the panel.
37:08 - "Gems like landshark that me and Phil watch like once a month." Followed by Phil shooting down the leaving youtube rumors. I do think that they don't plan on stopping videos at any point in the near future, even if it's not a focal point of the career. I think if leaving youtube was recently on his mind he'd have found a way to diplomatically word it.
38:28 - Dan and Phil both have a reaction to Elliot saying the word decade. Phil kind of goes 'oof' and Dan says 'don't say that word.' Another hint that Phil is sensitive to his age? I mean, it's a joke, but sometimes you can see the truth at the bottom of a humorous reaction.
39:38 - "You can tell he's got - he starts pacing around the apartment. Oh, he's got a video idea, I can see it." Oh snap, I forgot this moment. Phil actually interrupts one of Dan's stories to give it some more texture by adding detail of his own. Dan with his fingers over his mouth grinning at Phil after. He's just so pleased.
42:40 - "I mean, thankfully I have Phil to approve my ideas before I [can't hear over screaming.] Sometimes I'll think of a video and I'm like, is this funny? And Phil's like 'mmmmmmm.' And I get really offended."
"I'll just do that ehhhh maybe...."
"Maybe somebody coming from this perspective might think this."
Not new info but cutecutecute. I'll focus on that instead of the hypocrisy on display here from Dan when he talks about how he values creative honesty and not overthinking; please, buddy, get back to me with that when your last video wasn't about fucking exam study tips.
50:25 more hypocrisy about bigger audience = creative freedom but I do like the bit of honesty in how doing youtube became more terrifying after he dropped out of law school. I believe that he stresses less over "playing the game of youtube" but the talk of not compromising what he wants to do... seriously, get back to me when you're making creative videos. This talk about him being in law school is nice though. Phil lifts his mic like he's going to talk in the middle of Dan's sentence and I want to know if what he was going to say is what he ended up saying when Dan finished. Which was:
51:50 - Phil talking about how much mean comments hurt him makes me 'aw' but Phil including constructive comments in that makes me tilt my head. That stubbornness Dan spoke of in the roulette video, maybe? Phil not wanting to accept that how he did something isn't the best way to do something? He says it doesn't bother him anymore; is that because his self-confidence is so that he assumes negative/constructive comments are wrong, or because he learned how to take them to heart in the spirit intended? (For constructive ones, at least.)
55:02 - Phil playing 'hello internet' story.
55:39 - Phil talking about how far he's come and it being a morale boost is cute.
59:44 - Jenna's comment: "And you know when I'm not happy I'm just gonna disappear to Montana and get a farm with a bunch of dogs." Dan and Phil's delighted reactions to that - you just KNOW that's a plan they've talked about. Maybe not Montana, but somewhere. That's a genuine Phil laugh. He lifts the mic to his mouth again to talk but then lowers it. Damnit, Phil. Interrupt people more. I want your thoughts.
