I got the impression from the video that Dan just didn't tell them? He even said if it happened as an adult he'd just tell his mum, which implies that as a kid he didn't actually let his parents know that he didn't like the teacher so they probably had no idea. I don't think it's uncommon for a twelve year old to desperately want to do something and then after eight weeks decide they don't like it as much as they thought they would.

i can't believe the piano teacher video actually happened!
i liked it a lot! a really good mixture of hilarious and relatable. the skits were on point and for some reason i feel like the editing and camera angles were exceptionally dynamic in this, did anyone get the same impression? i lost it at the fridge part (why would he open the fridge, of all possible cupboards to snoop in??), only to be mildly freaked out -- the stashed meat is too weird to even be made up. i'll definitely rewatch this later. i also loved the endscreen, although i definitely blocked out everything dan was saying to listen to für elise

that's what i was thinking -- an old woman moving from one day to another would be exceptional and she was even living in the same street? i mean my view on this is probably distorted because in my home town all neighbours spy on each other and there's no way someone could move without everyone knowing. well, might be that dan didn't literally say she moved but just that he quit without giving a reason.

Watching this videos makes it obvious how he hates confrontation and does not automatically go towards others for help or advice, though I'm not sure this has anything to do with his family, just Dan's particular personality and behaviour that makes him inclined to internalize any problems he has.
Also, I didn't find that the experience was a "traumatic" one, son, I've been through piano exams, they're traumatic. Though I sympathize with the horrible piano teachers, I've had ones with strict and tough personalities and they can be difficult, however not impossible. Again, I feel that because Dan did not discuss his difficulties with anybody, the problem became worse and resonated on his confidence.
Additionally, I'm a bit disappointed he did not persevere in music, albeit the terrible teacher. He would have never made it musically if he easily stopped there, though I admire his ambition and hard work in earning money to pursue his interests initially, I predict that he would have lost interest anyway.
I really enjoyed the acting and sketch set up, his acting was on point for his evil piano teacher and young self (smiley, cute and dimpled Dan will be in gif sets soon, count on that). Also the editing and spacial sense in the set he made in the flat was amazing, the quality feels less amateurish and more professional level that I think Dan has been aspiring to have, so props to him for creating that.
I agree with absolutely everything you just said Along with editing, his lighting/coloring was spot on. No more of that washed out over saturation, please!
You can find instructors like Maureen in any skill like that (music, art, sport, etc.), so I did find the "lesson" to be a good one, but must say that I just didn't find the story to be video worthy. We'd heard most of it before.

jk, but i did enjoy the video. i'm not big on sketches, but i thought it was really well made editing/acting wise. the story didn't touch me that much tbh, as someone who studied piano i can't really feel for someone who gave up after just one teacher, esp in a demanding field like music.
(funnily enough i can relate to the not telling anything to parents part. i have no idea why but i used to hide all kinds of shit from my parents, even health issues which was obviously a big mistake. )
+100 points for no mentions of phil in the video. lord knows we haven't had pure-dan-no-phil content in a while!

This pleased me a lot too. I mean, I'm the biggest fan of joint content, but if we're getting that on the regular in DAPG form then by all means, boys, use your main channels to do your own things!

I made the mistake of taking a big gulp of coffee right before clicking play not expecting it to jump direct into him literally banging his head on a keyboard.
RIP my keyboard.
Loved the video though, I always enjoy his storytelling. I wonder if he will actually get around to going to lessons again?

Me too! On violin of course, but I have gotten right hand on piano. Plus that soundtrack is still stuck (and probably forever stuck) in my head! I really hope it wins the Oscars
The beginning few bars of Fur Elise is pretty easy to learn on the piano by ear (a simplified version at least) if you're musically minded which it seems like Dan is a little! If I was his piano teacher I would have still been pretty impressed though.
Yay weekend music twins! I also hope it wins all the Oscars!
And yes the soundtrack is in my head forever now, it's all I've listened to since I saw the film. I tried to learn City of Stars too but it's way harder!

In the end I don't think the story itself was that interesting, but it was quite relatable (reminded me of my awful horse riding instructor) and the sketches really lifted the story. He did an excellent job. A nice traditional DINOF story/sketch video always kinda feels like coming home for me. /cheesy
I'm most excited about getting two videos within a month time, like hell yes keep this up Danny
Why does the UK sell keyboards that make sex noises though..

I'm inclined to think Dan probably gave his parents a normal kid excuse for quitting extra curricular activities like he didn't enjoy it as much as he thought he would or it was too hard rather than telling them the piano teacher moved because that just makes zero sense when he'd already said she lived in their street. Even if she didn't go out much there is still a fair chance they'd see her around at some point and/or notice a new family didn't appear at her house. As far as lies go that would be a dumb one even for a 12 year old.
I think the telling them she'd moved to Scotland thing might just be one of those things Dan just says for effect or because he thought it sounded better for some reason.
As for why Dan felt he had to hide it from his parents well I was also the type of kid who would have just lied in that scenario as I didn't like to confide in my parents about stuff and I have wonderful parents.
I don't think the fact he didn't confide in them about stuff like that means they were some kind of monsters. Or that they must be the worst for just accepting at face value he was done with piano and there wasn't something he wasn't telling them about it. From my experience it's actually fairly normal kid/teen behaviour to get really excited about some new hobby only to lose interest in it within a short period of time. It happens and there usually isn't anything big behind it.

Completely agree with this! It's not something I'd worry about too much, I've always been kind of the same in that there's a lot I don't tell my parents about and would usually just suffer with it on my own. I also think it's likely the bit about telling his parents she moved to Scotland was probably exaggerated for entertainment value.
But yeah, I really enjoyed this video! Like others have said, the story itself wasn't THAT interesting on it's own but Dan has a way with words and is great at storytelling so I found it very enjoyable. He's really great at playing different characters, I thought his portrayal of the old lady was really hilarious.
Also found it very relatable! What is it with weird piano teachers?? My piano teacher used to hack up phlegm really loudly while I was playing, which was SO off-putting and strange :wtf:

I'm a piano teacher, so this video was amazing to me. A few things, cuz I can't help myself:
- Piano teachers who don't listen to what the kids are motivated by are the WORST
- Dan, every piano teacher hates Fur Elise. It's the song everyone knows and everyone wants to play so we get sick of it. BUT c'mon teacher -- he was interested in learning a classical song, take it and RUN WITH IT.
- Dan saying that he procrastinated practicing in favor of homework made my heart
- What she said about his fingers made me so angry -- in my opinion, if someone wants to learn music, they should learn. Even if they don't end up having a music profession, they will learn to appreciate and support the arts. *steps down from soapbox*
- It makes me SO HAPPY that he wants to take lessons again -- I hope he follows through! I love teaching adults as they typically really want to be there and know what their goal is in taking lessons. I do hope that he doesn't give up if he doesn't click with the first teacher he tries.

I loved Dan's video!
Coming from someone who had a similar experience with a crazy piano teacher, it made me laugh so much, because I could actually see my old piano teacher in what he was saying (no seriously...the woman taped metal forks to my wrists so I wouldn't be able to bend my wrists backwards )
I genuinely laughed out loud (not just a fast exhale of air!) at the beginning of the video...definitely one of my favourites in a long time.
I'm so glad he's considering getting lessons again - learning as an adult is so different to learning as a child.
I'm actually so shocked we got two videos in a month from both of them, plus gaming videos! 2017 is shaping up to be a fabulous year

That was a pretty good video! It was hilarious and very well made: good script, good skits, nice costumes -even if his evil teacher is actually Doris 2.0- nice editing, good job Daniel! You are back again
I hope he has a better experience this year, a nicer teacher isn't too much to ask for! And if something goes wrong he can call his mom or ask Phil to send an angry DM to his teacher
And apparently, they had looots of fun filming this, that's good to know guys.
I hope we have a little chat about this on Phil's live show too.
And I know I'm a little late but I want to congratulate Oqua, felucca and everyone who worked on the new FAQ! It's incredible and amazing! The best Deppy FAQ in existence tbh

Dan's new vid was so good! I really relate to this one too because I had a shit piano teacher and it didn't occur to me to tell my mum i didn't like her for about 3 years. I guess if I'd been paying for my own lessons like Dan did I might have done something about her sooner. Good for him though that it didn't put him off learning piano completely.

Hi, so I made a compilation of Dan talking about his family's financial situation when he was growing up. I remember it was quite controversial back in like October when he talked about not being able to afford merch as a kid, and then today he talked again about his family not being able to afford things, so I thought it would be interesting to make a little post about times when he's said stuff like that.

So I had some friends that had kinda big houses but they never left the country; they thought that France was exotic. I wonder how much of is "We were poor when I was growing up" is more that his parents thought it was more important to travel the world than it was to have band merch/have cable/buy their preteen an upright piano. And young Dan didn't realize it?

To me it sounds like they probably were lower middle class. Not COMPLETELY poor but not a lot of extra money. It does seem like with what money they had extra they saved to go on vacations instead of material items which is nice. Dan also had a family that was on the smaller side (I'm one of six lmao) so although traveling would be expensive it would be doable. It seems like Dan had a very similar upbringing class wise as me. I find it funny everyone assumes Dan's family was upper middle class despite Dan saying things like this. Even looking at his house in his 2009 videos, it seems like a modest house to me.

I don't see how anything they've been doing is them being more "out". Yes, they've been acting more natural recently, but nothing they've done is explicitly coupley. Don't get me wrong, I think there's a good chance they're together. And if they are, I wouldn't necessarily be surprised if they went down the "come out by subtly slipping something in but not actually explicitly saying anything" route. E.i., going out on a date and actually calling it a date. I feel like they would do something that's literally not interpretable any other way than "they're together". I do think they're showing us a more person side to them, and we're seeing more what they're like in real life. But so far, that hasn't including anything that points towards them dating. I mean, walking along a beach together for Phil's birthday? It's cute. And it's cute to imagine that in a romantic setting, and I think it's okay if you imagine it like that. But it's imagining. Dan and Phil have not said or done anything to indicate it was actually romantic. So I just don't think that it's fair to say they're been acting "borderline out". Dan and Phil will come out when they want to, and whichever way they do that, they're gonna make it clear. And until then, we shouldn't say they're "out" or "acting out" (lol I make it sound like people are accusing them of throwing tantrums) or whatever.
On another note, I LOVED Dan's video I know we've heard bits and pieces of it before but I really liked seeing it all together in a video and I loved Dan's videography.
Also two questions: has Dan mentioned only taking lessons for eight weeks and then quitting altogether or having to pay for his lessons himself before?
