Dan & Phil Part 45: R.I.P danisnotonfire 2009-2017

I haven't had time to read the last 3 pages yet, so you might already be talking about it, but-
Does any of you also feel like Dan lets Phil win sometimes? Because somehow there are two "Dan-reactions" to Phil winning:
1. "NOO, whaat?!?"
2. "Ah, well done Phil!"
Or maybe it's just depending on the game they play. But I'm thinking about that since quite a while now, and maybe someone feels the same?

He certainly likes to keep the gaming as fair as possible, and in previous gaming videos alluded to Phil choosing games that he himself is good at to allow more wins for him. He is also known to celebrate and encourage Phil to win and do well when it comes to videos, and is self aware "Why am I helping you?" But, letting him win? I don't know. It isn't out of the question and actually fairly likely, but I wouldn't completely rule out situations where he's genuinely pleased to see Phil succeed. I think Dan also plays into and is encouraged to support him, because he's a supportive boyfriend and also you WANT Phil to win. He's that king of persona that makes him the underdog and you want him to succeed and do well. And Phil isn't that much different from his persona so I do think Dan just likes him succeed I think it's satisfying, even if Phil is a cringey winner and spammer

I second this ^^. Although I have a feeling the tie that happened at the end of gaming-mas was a bit too convenient . Dan's ridiculously supportive of everything Phil does (I mean, Dan promos AmazingPhil videos harder than Phil sometimes), so I don't suspect their gaming dynamics is any different.

imo a reason they don't play more DvP console games is because Dan's just really good at them. Anthony's vidcon vlog comes to mind where he and cat and people talk about how no one can win against Dan when they're playing marioKart. also dan starts off the DDR vid by saying they didn't make it a DvP because Dans so good at it, which is presented as a joke but it's still true.

We all know that one person who catches on to video games effortlessly fast, Dan's definitely one of them. It also makes sense that they play so many app games for DvP--Phil plays apps like crossyroads way more than dan does, so if they play those games they compete on a more even playing field. DvP wouldn't be that fun if Dan kept winning every game.

Confession time.
I find myself rooting for Dan a lot of the time, and I realized today why. Most people tend to root for Phil (which is great!), but what I dislike is how a good number of people, mostly on twitter, root for Phil not because of who he is but because of the usual infintalization shick where fans view/treat him as a child. No one does that here, which I love, but ffs philly-bean is a grown-ass man

I think that part of the reason some people (#notallphilstans obvs) want Phil to win is because of the underdog schtick, and because (for whatever reason) it's seen as more acceptable to shit on Dan than it is to shit on Phil. Like, so many responses to Dan's tweets could be read at face value as hate messages (even though it's all mr joe king), whereas there's relentless encouraging comments and 'oh, you're too adorable!' when it comes to Phil. I know it's to do with how they present themselves: Dan is always going on about people cyberbullying him; Phil is untouchable, everybody's sunshine (blech). Don't tease him because he's srs bsns. But, because they're both grown men, and Phil is older, it just seems weird to me. An over-correction of the time of dangirls on the phandom's part?

Ooo bless you for this! I was thinking this would be a video I couldn't watch again, but now I totally will! I think I also mostly root for Dan, I'm not entirely sure why, maybe just because he gets me more hyped? But I also am happy when Phil wins, partially for Dan's reactions of either frustration or affection.

I forget who mentioned it, but I'm relieved to hear than Dan likes the art of him in make-up. Personally it makes me cringe a bit, just that it's being put out there, especially if it's a manip of an already beautiful selfie. But if he's fine with it, I'm fine with it, or will try to be at least.

I get what you're trying to say. I think it might steam from the causal viewers and other people outside of the phandom putting Dan above Phil. Like Dan has more subs, people call him "the hot one" and I think he overall gets more recognition. So it seems that maybe the philgirls are trying to overcompensate for all that? It sort of seems like in the phandom, Phil is the favourite but outside the phandom, Dan is the favourite?

Nah, Dan is definitely preferred within the phandom too. All you have to do is look at the numbers on likes/retweets/views for Dan's social media compared to Phil's, or the number of likes and reblogs that gifsets of just Dan get compared to gifsets of just Phil. Even conversation on here; it tends toward Dan-only fairly regularly but very rarely Phil only. People find Dan more interesting, more engaging, and more share-worthy. I think that the people who prefer Phil tend to try and be more vocal because they're fewer in number inside the phandom and out.

Do you think there are still people who follow/watch only Dan and not Phil, though? Because, that would partially explain the bigger numbers of likes and views. Not that I don't think that there are people in the phandom who unashamedly prefer Dan to Phil. But I wouldn't consider Dan-only viewers part of the phandom, either.

I guess it comes down to how they approach YT. Dan spends ages thinking about each video, he wants them to be perfect, he wants to present that certain angle each time. Whereas Phil has said that he makes lighthearted videos because he wants to make other people happy (not a bad thing). Dan always invites criticism ("so what did you guys think?").

I do think a factor in how the phandom treats Phil is infantalisation, though, and I'm not cool with that.

I would definitely think that there's people that only watch Dan. Dan's videos tend to be more relatable, and you can just jump into one without getting too invested in his life and knowing much about him, whereas Phil's videos are more vloggy and about his life. I can see a viewer who doesn't know who Dan and Phil are being more inclined to watch a video about Dan's cringe attacks than if Phil gets ASMR or not.

I definitely agree with you on that. Dan makes fun of us, so we make fun of him in return. Phil isn't like that so it feels a little meaner.

I always root for Phil, but damn does that "innocence smol bean" grate on me. I think I root for Phil because he's the underdog, and because I prefer his reaction when he wins. Dan often has a joking "HA! I won" (which I can relate to lmao) whilst Phil has a much more "YES I WON!" (because Dan is defo better at the games, ngl, so winning against him seems to be somewhat of a rarity) and because of that, many of us are pleased that he won over Dan.

Agree on all the points regarding Dan's content being much more relatable. I started watching Dan first (his "Meaning of Life" video was a complete juxtaposition to all the more cynical meaning of life videos I'd been watching at 4am whilst crying about the inevitability of death. it was so positive and well produced I just started binge watching, and felt so much happier, huh) and with Phil's videos I felt I had to watch a few to start loving his content; with Phil it's about staying for the person, whilst with Dan it would be much easier to slip in and out, watching videos with titles specifically related to your interests (which is why I think he has more subscribers, for the fans that just watch for the relatable vids)

I root for Phil because I just prefer Phil. (If you couldn't tell by the subject of my name, my signature, and my avatar... ) I automatically gravitate toward his side and I always watch his face first. I'm sure there are a plethora of reasons why I prefer Phil but I think the main one is that sometimes Dan's brand of sarcastic remarks and negativity to be funny exhausts me. Also, I really connect with Phil's love of animals and appreciate his overall positivity with the slightest sprinkle of sarcasm/dark humor.

It makes me really sad that Dan is preferred in the phandom. I often get really upset on Phil's part that he's been doing this for way longer, seems all-around more creative with video generation, and is the reason that Dan started making videos at all - and still Dan has more subscribers. A lot of people think that Dan has more casual fans because of his brand of humor, but I would say that it's because he's more "conventionally" attractive than Phil.

The way he demeans other people sometimes, and uses other people to his advantage socially, and even for entertainment purposes in his videos. He is very slow to change himself, and I get the impression he is rather stubborn. I think EVERYBODY has some degree of narcissism and self-obsession, more than they would admit to, or even realize themselves. Of course, Phil does care about other people, he is king, caring and generous, but I still think he is human, and capable of also thinking "I'm better/nicer than that person." I see this all the time, whenever he does a male character in his video, he also assumes a dumb, generic guy role, and I think he secretly believes himself better than most guys, maybe it's an internalized thing? That's also a good point. Reminds me when Dan and Phil were interviewing Little Mix, and Dan and Phil agreed that if one of the members had to kill one of them, they might as well just kill them both.

I loved yesterday's Mario Kart video They just seemed so happy to be there and play that game and it really showed. I hope they do more, not even as DvsP but just a nice thing once in a while just like what they're doing with the golf videos. But a little more intense

I'm living for how fond they sounded while exposing each other's little gaming habits (Phil being an annoying winner in multiplayer, Dan doing bomb training at 3AM) like they literally love and accept everything about each other and they can't even pretend to ever be mad about it. It's like the kitchen cupboard thing again, Dan might complain but he will silently follow Phil around the flat closing every cupboard he leaves open anyway because that's just part of his life with Phil. The fondness was seriously radiating of the screen.

And because I'm never gonna stop being obnoxious about it; Phil's haircut continues to haunt me. And looks even worse when the screen is flipped. Please stop.

+1 that. I can defo see that - other youtubers seem to be part of larger groups, such as the Gleam Team, yet all function as seperate entities. I don't know any other youtubers that are as closely associated to one another as Dan and Phil, and whilst we see them being friends with many other British youtubers, they don't appear as close to them as the other youtubers seem to be with one another.

I find it so interesting how they've somehow created such an appealing duo that they seem to somewhat dominate a large portion of youtube. Very dedicated to their work though, they seem to always be working on projects and I seriously respect that. Although I sometimes wonder whether it gets difficult work together with your best friend, who you also live with. They barely spend any time apart, and I sometimes wonder how they negotiate business ideas, and how they make a clear divide between friendship and business.

I thought it was taken in the bahama's as well but then I realized, the photo must've been taken at sunset (judging by the slight pink in the sky) and that would've been around the time he was on a plane from the Bahamas the other day (judging by the flight stuff the phandom found) so that photo is most likely from Florida. Ether way it's still very pretty.

I think I also root for Phil because he's the underdog. But that's not the only reason. I'm a Philgirl at this point and there's nothing I can do to deny it. Even though I generally say that I like them both equally, I will always choose Phil if I have to and the longer I am watching them, the more I'm drawn to Phil. And this wasn't always the case.

At first, I kind of preferred Dan. It started to change when I watched old videos of Phil that gave me an insight in an aspect of his personality that he doesn't really show and I wasn't aware existed before. How creative he is. How many interesting, even disturbing things his mind can come up with. How he's much more than an innocent angel bean. And I started to see that Phil in the Phil he is now as well.

Not to be objectifying but when I first saw them, I thought "Wow, Dan's kinda hot." And now I'm just looking at Phil before I look at Dan and so fascinated by his beauty. He doesn't have the looks that make him conveniently attractive but that's what I like. I looked at Dan a few times and drooled over him but then he just looks like other attractive people (which isn't necessarily a good thing, since he gets objectified all the time). I still find Dan hot and when he posts a selfie, I often feel very attracted to him, but I just got ... bored (?) with his looks. Phil, on the other hand, looks more unique. The shape of his head, his inconclusive eye colour - I just think he's a very beautiful man and I never get bored staring at him.

Then the videos. Dan's videos are more relatable to me and when I rewatch videos, I tend to rewatch Dan's more for the content and Phil's more for Phil. While both of them make funny videos, Dans' sometimes remind me of some bad shit and can be a bit of a downer. Which is great, I like that, but sometimes I just need something pleasant to cheer me up and doesn't get me thinking and then I watch Phil's videos. He tells embarrassing stories or just shows useless items or talks about how weird he is and while that can also be relatable, it's mostly just pleasant and funny. Phil never fails to make me smile. And it's the same with ls. While Dan says a lot of great and inspirational things, he can also be very tiring and sometimes very annoying. When you watch Phil's ls, you know you can expect them to be pleasant no matter what. And that's nice.

Something I can certainly say though, is that I am not rooting for Phil because of the innocent vibe. I realised very early on in watching him that he isn't as innocent as some of his fans make him seem. Every time I see a post with "protect this smol angel bean, he doesn't understand dirty words, cover your ears, philly", I want to throw up. Phil isn't a little kid, he isn't an innocent person, he's just very careful because he knows he has a young audience.
