4.) Would you rather have an unlimited first-class plane ticket to any destination or never have to pay for food at restaurants?

5.) Would you rather lose the ability to read and write or lose the ability to speak? (I guess you wouldn't be able to post on IDB anymore but is that really such a loss?(jk please don't ban me...))

6.) Would you rather be put in a maximum security federal prison with hardened criminals for one year or be put in a relatively relaxed prison white-collar criminals for three years?

7.) Would you rather be able to be free from junk mail or free from email spam for the rest of your life?

I LIVE for talking about myself, so I'll answer these questions

1. By far the last movie (Elf) since it's essentially a more festive version of this universe. Last book I read (or am still reading) is the Name of the Rose and there's no way I'm living in some 14th century monastery.

2. Probably never use a touchscreen. I have a lot of assignments for school n stuff on my laptop, and I'd rather not text my friends than flunk (sorry)

3. I mean, while it's fun to have sims where I ruin their lives, I'd rather not live my entire life in a virtual reality with god-like powers. I'm already prepared to be boring and nothing special in life.

4. I honestly hate flying and don't do it that often, so I'd much rather be able to eat out for free. It doesn't matter how much it costs, I'm not going in one of those metal vomit-tubes.

5. I'd rather lose the ability to speak. Another one of those "I'd prefer to be friendless than fail out of school." Honestly, how do I even have friends

6. Definitely rather a lower-security prison for three years. I'm a small person who would probably be murdered very easily.

7. Eh, either way. I'm not too bothered by it.

8. Depends on the scope of the lie. Like if it's just that all my friends think I smell weirdly like walnuts, I'll live with the lie. On the other hand, if I'm actually living in the matrix I feel like I'd want to know that kind of thing, y'know.

Ooo good questions!

1.) Would you rather be stuck in the universe of the last book you read or the last movie you watched? (and then tell us what book or movie it is!)

The last movie I watched was The Santa Clause, and I would rather live in that limited magical alternate reality than in the world of A Series of Unfortunate events that I’m reading to my son.

2.) Would you rather never be able to use a touchscreen or never be able to use a keyboard and mouse?

I use my iPad and iPhone way more than my computer and think I’d rather keep them, how sad.

3.) Would you rather live in a virtual reality where you are all powerful or live in the real world and be average / never make a difference? (assume the virtual reality is just about as realistic as the real world, but still not quite the same.)

Hmm thinking about what powerful means and whether I can even make a difference if it’s virtual.. hard to say. Can I shed my anxiety, depression and confidence issues with this “power”?

4.) Would you rather have an unlimited first-class plane ticket to any destination or never have to pay for food at restaurants?

Free food all the way! I don’t have enough money to enjoy the destinations and there are so many restaurants I’d love to try.

5.) Would you rather lose the ability to read and write or lose the ability to speak? (I guess you wouldn't be able to post on IDB anymore but is that really such a loss?(jk please don't ban me...))

I think I’d rather lose the ability’s to speak.

6.) Would you rather be put in a maximum security federal prison with hardened criminals for one year or be put in a relatively relaxed prison white-collar criminals for three years?

Three years or relatively relaxed living for sure, I’d pick up a new hobby, spiritual practice, exercise routine.

7.) Would you rather be able to be free from junk mail or free from email spam for the rest of your life?

At first I was going to say email, but I don’t have issues with spam, it’s all the social justice lists I got myself subscribed to... so um save the trees!

8.) Would you rather know the uncomfortable truth or believe a comforting lie?

Truth.

Sweet, thanks for the questions whelpkeeper! Under the cut! (Also, I'm writing this before reading anyone else's responses, so that my answers won't be influenced by anyone else's interpretations. I'm sorry if I end up with similar answers to anyone, I swear it's not on purpose!)
1.) Would you rather be stuck in the universe of the last book you read or the last movie you watched? (and then tell us what book or movie it is!)
The last book I read was Dracula, so I'm gonna have to take a hard pass on that. Even if I live in the post-vampire-hunting period, I'll still be a woman stuck in late-Victorian England, and I like my rights, thank you very much (and central heating).

The last movie I watched was that Netflix movie Bright starring Will Smith. The movie was lackluster, but the world itself isn't that different from ours (WHICH IS ONE OF THE MANY FLAWS OF THE MOVIE, I COULD RANT FOR HOURS ABOUT THIS SOMEBODY STOP ME); everything's exactly the same, there are just orcs and elves running around too. So I'll pick Bright over Dracula for sure.

2.) Would you rather never be able to use a touchscreen or never be able to use a keyboard and mouse?
Never be able to use a touchscreen, definitely. Playing my favorite video games would be near-impossible otherwise.

3.) Would you rather live in a virtual reality where you are all powerful or live in the real world and be average / never make a difference? (assume the virtual reality is just about as realistic as the real world, but still not quite the same.)
Hmm, I dunno. This question doesn't have very many qualifiers so it's really hard to decide... like, what's the point of living in real life if you never make a difference, no matter how small? But on the other hand, living in the real world with real people is what makes life worth it. I'm assuming that, in the virtual reality, I'd be all alone and everything/everyone would be digital - so there would be no "real" anything, including me family and friends. So, in the end, I think I'd rather live in the real world and just be a regular person who never does anything of consequence, although the thought of never giving back in any way makes me feel guilty. :?

4.) Would you rather have an unlimited first-class plane ticket to any destination or never have to pay for food at restaurants?
Unlimited first-class plane ticket omg!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I have a lot of friends from college who are now scattered all across the globe, and what I wouldn't give to go and see them. I'll treat them to the most expensive restaurants, I don't care. As long as they're there eating with me, I'd be happy.

5.) Would you rather lose the ability to read and write or lose the ability to speak? (I guess you wouldn't be able to post on IDB anymore but is that really such a loss?(jk please don't ban me...))
I would rather lose the ability to speak, personally. Writing is my one passion in life, and if I lost the ability to do that I'd feel like I lost all purpose and talent.

6.) Would you rather be put in a maximum security federal prison with hardened criminals for one year or be put in a relatively relaxed prison white-collar criminals for three years?
I'll take the three years, whatever. I'm weak, physically and mentally, and if I went to the one-year federal prison I might not come back alive at all.

7.) Would you rather be able to be free from junk mail or free from email spam for the rest of your life?
Junk mail, I guess? It's easier to filter out spam emails imo, and junk mail just makes for more physical clutter.

8.) Would you rather know the uncomfortable truth or believe a comforting lie?
It would depend on the situation, I think. Whichever would be most beneficial to me in that specific scenario - like, if the uncomfortable truth is that so-and-so said something about me behind my back, then I don't need to know that. I'd rather have the comforting lie that everyone says nice things about me, because the uncomfortable truth doesn't really help me in any way. But like, if the uncomfortable truth were like, "your government is really corrupt and did all these terrible things here's the proofs," I'd like to know because it can potentially help me increase my quality of life. Does that make any sense? I didn't really answer the question LOL SORRY.

If I did have to pick one, though, I'd be uncomfortable truth, because I'm nosy and not knowing things is really frustrating lol

1.) Would you rather be stuck in the universe of the last book you read or the last movie you watched? (and then tell us what book or movie it is!)
Last book I read was "Turtles All the Way Down". Last movie I watched was "While We're Young" starring Adam Driver. Make your own conclusions.
2.) Would you rather never be able to use a touchscreen or never be able to use a keyboard and mouse?
Keyboard and mouse. Phones can do everything a laptop can do nowadays.
3.) Would you rather live in a virtual reality where you are all powerful or live in the real world and be average / never make a difference? (assume the virtual reality is just about as realistic as the real world, but still not quite the same.)
Real world.
4.) Would you rather have an unlimited first-class plane ticket to any destination or never have to pay for food at restaurants?
Free food.
5.) Would you rather lose the ability to read and write or lose the ability to speak? (I guess you wouldn't be able to post on IDB anymore but is that really such a loss?(jk please don't ban me...))
Speak. I need my books.
6.) Would you rather be put in a maximum security federal prison with hardened criminals for one year or be put in a relatively relaxed prison white-collar criminals for three years?
Three years. I'm an underweight 5'1 girl.
7.) Would you rather be able to be free from junk mail or free from email spam for the rest of your life?
E-mail spam. Don't get much junk mail as is.
8.) Would you rather know the uncomfortable truth or believe a comforting lie?
I have a lot of experience w/ uncomfortable truths. I'd much prefer that.

Side note: you know phandom twitter is bored when it's murder mystery time.

I've never actually posted here before, but I made this account about a week ago after reading the forums for a couple of months and these questions intrigued me, so I thought, why not.
1. The last book I read was The Tortilla Curtain (which I have to teach for my student teaching starting next week) and the last movie was Call Me By Your Name. Both are just the real world, but I would much rather live in Northern Italy and lounge around in the pool by pretty people than live in the super racist community that is upper-middle class America that the book centers around.

2. This one stumped me. I guess a keyboard and mouse, because as long as I had a touchscreen computer or my phone I would be good, but without a touchscreen I couldn't use my phone and what would I do when I'm bored away from my house without it.

3. I don't think I would only want to live in a virtual reality. Are you really experiencing things that way? So I'll just remain average in the real world.

4. My first thought was free food, but one of my biggest dreams is to travel and get away from Midwest America, so I would take the unlimited plane tickets.

5. I would much rather lose the ability to speak. I love reading and I hate talking to people, so that's a no brainer.

6. Neither. But I don't think I would last in prison for three years, so I would chose the one-year option. I'm pretty good at blending into walls and not being noticed.

7. I guess I don't really know/notice the different. I guess email spam? I don't even check my junk folder on my account.

8. For the most part, I guess I would rather just believe a comforting lie. I'm sure there are situations where I would rather know the truth, but if it's going to make my life more difficult then really what's the point in knowing, unless I definitely could do something about it.

Hi! So I’ve been lurking here for a while now and since it doesn’t seem to have been discussed yet (except some Phannies randomly meeting DnP can look a bit dodgy) it looks like the girls who met Dan in London a few days ago were somewhat near their apartment? I wish I knew how to attach screenshots so if anyone could tell me I’d appreciate it since I’m on my phone and everything looks a bit complicated. Plus I can’t confirm for sure but just thought I’d let you know as there is no other content to discuss (also excuse me if some sentences are worded badly or hard to understand as English isn’t my first language and I’m bad with words anyway)

oooo these are great questions!

1.) Would you rather be stuck in the universe of the last book you read or the last movie you watched? (and then tell us what book or movie it is!)
The last move i watched was "call me by your name", which is a coming-of-age queer story taking place in the early 80s, and the last book i read was "a darker shade of magic", which is about 4 different magical Londons and people who can travel between them (in a nutshell-it's definitely a lot more interesting than that haha). tbh i would take the latter bc the 80s were not a great time to be queer :/

2.) Would you rather never be able to use a touchscreen or never be able to use a keyboard and mouse?
i would rather give up a touchscreen. idk if that's the weird choice, but i've lived most of my life without touchscreen technology, and i think it would be funny to bring back phones where you can flip the keyboard out of the side to text

3.) Would you rather live in a virtual reality where you are all powerful or live in the real world and be average / never make a difference? (assume the virtual reality is just about as realistic as the real world, but still not quite the same.)
while virtual reality intrigues me to no end, power isn't something i greatly crave, so i guess i would choose the real world, but the thought of never making a difference sucks because activism is one of the most fulfilling "hobbies" i do

4.) Would you rather have an unlimited first-class plane ticket to any destination or never have to pay for food at restaurants?
food is my life sooo

5.) Would you rather lose the ability to read and write or lose the ability to speak? (I guess you wouldn't be able to post on IDB anymore but is that really such a loss?(jk please don't ban me...))
speech 100%. it would suck because i make yt videos that i talk in (way too much tbh so honestly the loss of my rambling would be a blessing in the world), but i can't live without books, and i think my anxiety would thank me as i wouldn't have to interact with anyone irl lol. also i'm trying to pursue a career in writing, which i don't want to give up on

6.) Would you rather be put in a maximum security federal prison with hardened criminals for one year or be put in a relatively relaxed prison white-collar criminals for three years?
as much as i would love to make use of my black belt in taekwondo, i'm a lazy bitch and have no energy to deal with people getting physical or extreme amounts of verbal harassment, so i'd take the three years.

7.) Would you rather be able to be free from junk mail or free from email spam for the rest of your life?
junk mail. no need to print that shit out only for it to be recycled, which could save some trees. also i've found that certain kinds of spam emails can make excellent memes lol

8.) Would you rather know the uncomfortable truth or believe a comforting lie?
the truth. lies are shitty and they provide no room for growth.

Ah yes, the perfect procrastination!

1. Oof tough question, honestly. I think in the end I'm gonna have to go with movie (The Last Jedi.) Book was Jane Eyre if anyone's curious.

2. THAT'S REALLY TOUGH. I would probably stick with touchscreens, even though it would suck.

3. Real world. I think I'd feel even more like a speck of dust in a virtual reality.

4. Definitely plane tickets! The concerts! The family visits! The vacations! The dreamhoneymoon to Hawaii, Japan AND IDK GREENLAND OR SG. Could probably even earn money on it by taking people with me lol. I like cooking anyway.

5. One option includes the ability to read, so I'd rather lose my ability to speak.

6. I'm thinking that in the top security one I would also be quite isolated, so definitely that one. Idk anything about prisons, but I can deal with complete isolation and a 1 hour daily walk in the yard ahah.

7. Hmm I'm gonna say I'd rather be free of junk-mail, assuming that saves the resources wasted on producing them.

8. Depends very much on the situation. I guess in things that already passed where I can do nothing to change anything, a comforting lie would often be good. For present things that can be changed, truth all the way.

2. Posting of private personal information of the individuals we discuss is strictly prohibited. This includes addresses, contact details (off or online), or those of the individuals associated with them (friends and family; past present or future).
posting information about where they live, including screenshots of locations, and even if you're not certain and it's just speculation - is forbidden on IDB.
link to the rest of the rules is here: viewtopic.php?f=2&t=1

take a quick minute to familiarise yourself and if you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask (by posting in 'About This Forum', the sub-section the rules is in.)

Love the q&a post guys but as the questions aren’t related to dan and phil this should really be done in the personal sub-forum. Q&a’s are a really fun thing (I also love answering them) but this thread is for discussion about Dan and Phil.

If anyone wants to make another one with questions about Deps then please do (I would deffo take part in it).

So you guys are in need of some information to discuss :D? How about the in-depth analysis of the Dan & Phil Survey results?
The calculations are made by me and I'm proud, so absolutely no apologies for the wall of text below :D And shout-out to @fondsmiles who supplied some of the graphs and also did the math for one of the posts that is coming soon. Make sure to read the full tumblr post if you are into statistics since we included the more technical details below a cut.
Two things that I found interesting:

1) The users of this forum are ~2 years older than phandom members who are active on other pages (see Age post)

2) Dan's and Phil's initially perceived sexuality (so what people thought their sexualities were when they first started watching) are surprisingly stable when compared to when people started watching. I personally thought that Dan might have been perceived more straight around 2012 and more not-straight after that, but there isn't so much difference after all.

One of the things I found interesting (unless I’m misreading it) is that older phans also believe they are in a relationship but are less likely to ‘ship’ them.
This is fascinating to me as an older fan. It makes me think about the evolution of the term and of what shipping is. People used to be uncomfortable with real person shipping which could play a part. Also shipping has moved to people wanting it to be canon when before there was less emphasis on this. It was all about exploring subtext and alternatives in canon.

Personally I’m part of that group who believe they’re in the relationship but don’t ship it. Probably because of the way I consider shipping. However I still take part in Finnish behaviour like reading fics.

Just some thoughts.

omg I read that in the same class I read Dracula! The holy trinity of that class was Jane Eyre, Dracula, and Hard Times. idk if you just read 1800s lit for fun, but I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed the books lol
Ugh, you know the content drought is bad when I turn to numbers for entertainment. :contentdrought: But I agree with lilabet that the perception of what "shipping" means has changed. Back in my day (like five years ago or whatever lmao), shipping just meant you wanted two characters (or irl people a la the kpop fandom) to be together. I was too young for the early days of internet fandom, but it did seem like shipping was more exclusively used for characters that weren't together canonically? Whereas now it's used very casually for any couple you support, whether they're canon/official or not.

I think two possible reasons people don't want to label their beliefs/opinions as shipping are:

1) They consider their own views to be a belief ("Ibelieve deppy are together") as opposed to a desire they're imposing upon the boys ("I want or hope deppy are together").

2) They don't want to be associated with shippers because they think they're cringey/creepy/etc, even if their actual opinions on deppy's relationship are basically the same as a shipper's.

idk if anyone has a specific opinion on this, but I'm curious so I wanna ask: What do you think makes a shipper a shipper? What separates them from people who "just think D&P are together"?

I was too young for the early days of internet fandom, but it did seem like shipping was more exclusively used for characters that weren't together canonically? Whereas now it's used very casually for any couple you support, whether they're canon/official or not.

Yeah, I think this is very interesting. Back when I first started watching deppy in 2013, I didn't really care whether or not they were a couple, and although I was very into fanfiction, I didn't really like the idea of RPF and so fundamentally disagreed with the notion of shipping two real people. Now, I do believe deppy are together, so I guess I fall into category 1? Imo, shipping has gained a reputation for being fandom-heavy and mainly done by immature teenage girls, so people who say that they don't want to ship deppy are at least partially buying into the notion that rp shipping is weird and gross and invasive (basically your second category).

Now, I don't think I would call myself a shipper, though if you asked I'd probably say yes, I do ship them, just because it's easier to say and most people probably don't bother with the nuances. But, I don't "ship" deppy in the same way I might ship Ron/Hermione or Anne/Gilbert. (Those are both canon ships - I don't know much about whether the term "shipping" was originally mostly used for non-confirmed or non-canon couples, though it sounds plausible.)

To actually answer your questions, I think what makes a shipper is whether or not they want the two (or more ;) ) people to be in a relationship. I see a lot of youtube comments on deppy's videos that say that deppy aren't a couple, but they still ship phan because it's fiction and they're not hurting dan and phil. If I could draw a Venn diagram right now I'd make two interlocking circles of shippers and people who think deppy are together, because I believe they overlap. What separates them from the people who believe deppy are together is that they may not believe deppy are together, or the people who believe deppy are together may fundamentally disagree with the idea of shipping real people.

not very organised, but those are my thoughts.

I find this really interesting too! I've actually never understood the argument that shipping exclusively involves wanting a ship to become canon, as I'm sure that's not at all what it used to be. People ship Ron and Hermione, for example, who are a canon ship. Or to use a real person example, there are people who would say they ship Tom Daley and Dustin Lance Black, who are a married couple.

I always thought shipping just meant enjoying the chemistry of a particular couple/relationship so much that you either a) hope they get together/fantasise about them getting together, or b) just generally support the concept of them being in a relationship with one another, regardless of whether or not they're canon. If someone was to say "I don't ship Dan and Phil", I would take that to mean that they don't think Dan and Phil are in a relationship and/or they don't think they would make a good or realistic couple.

I wonder if the statistic here comes from a greater number of young people shipping dnp despite not actually believing they're together, whereas older people are more likely to believe they are genuinely in a relationship? Or maybe it does just come down to peoples understanding of terminology, idk. For example, "shipping" is not really terminology I would use personally. Like, if someone asked me whether I "ship" Dan and Phil I'd definitely say yes, but it's not really a word that's in my vocab anymore (different story regarding 16-year-old me though, lmao). Maybe some of that fandom terminology has gone out of fashion a bit now?

a ridiculously long post about fan culture and the phandom within it under the cut because i find fan culture really interesting and apparently can't shut up about it.
lilabet wrote: Sat Dec 30, 2017 9:36 am One of the things I found interesting (unless I’m misreading it) is that older phans also believe they are in a relationship but are less likely to ‘ship’ them.

Just some thoughts.
i find this interesting too, and as someone who has been involved in fan/fandom culture since i was like 8, it's been interesting to see how it's grown over the years.

what i've found it that the term "shipping" or really to exclaiming that you "ship [insert couple]" seems to have started to become an outdated term. now that may just be me getting older, and younger people could still be actively using that terminology frequently, but i personally feel like it had it's huge heyday back in 2011-2014. i personally used "i ship it!" so much back then, and i noticed that after 2014 it just sort of faded away out of the limelight. again, that could just be me, but i didn't notice it being actively used in tumblr communities either, where the terms thrived.

also to tie into the deal with irl shipping, i know that back then it felt weird for be to consider shipping irl people, but eventually as others who felt uncomfortable were like "hey, i mean we aren't doing any harm, and they don't appear to mind, so it should be fine", i agreed with that mentality, and still do, so slowly i felt like shipping became more mainstream as people were more okay with shipping phan and troyler, for example, a ship that literally took over social media (and then died so fast lol).

anyway, what i'm getting at is that i believe the people who "grew up" in fandoms as shipping culture became a thing, and are still here today are often able to see past the simplicity of 'just shipping' a couple and run with their own preferred canons, without feeling the need to explicitly state that they ship them or that they're their otp. the 2011-2014 period felt like a time when fan culture was high and intense, and people really had to stake their claims with as much purpose as they could muster. i think youtube fandoms, the rapidly growing rise of young adult books and the entire glee fandom were the main contributors to this intensity that brought the "fanatic" back to the "fan". as things evidently started to settle a bit and the intensity fell, as well as fans getting older and maturing, the need to be so explicit about who you ship wasn't as necessary or urgent as so many ships were 'established' in this time. unless it's a new fandom, like how i watched people flip over skam and who they shipped on that show, there isn't a need for people to be as intense about shipping besides asking others who they ship and why, as well as making it evident that they do ship them through edits or fics and whatnot.

in regards to depps directly, while there are new and young people joining the phandom who didn't have the wondrous experience of the glee fandom on tumblr when the show was still airing, so they're more inclined to take definitive sides on where they stand with phan, a lot of people who have been here for awhile took their stance, and due to how much they've 'opened up' from 2014 until now, the dramatics of shipping or not shipping phan are less prevalent in the community. now that's not to say people don't fight about whether or not dnp are together, but it feels a lot less like war than it did a few years ago.

personally, i believe they're in a relationship about 90% of the time, since my brain likes to mess with me the other 10% of the time and convince me that they're just best buds (apparently i'm in the 90% zone rn haha). i guess i could say i ship it, but i feel like the last time i said "i ship dan and phil" was in like early 2015. it just doesn't feel necessary for me to say it any more, and as i just word-dumped above, the fanatic shipping experience i had with this fandom and others feels like a form of adolescence within my fandom experience (and i personally think within most 'older' fandoms who thrived in the 2011-2014 period).

obviously this post is based on my own experiences, and as someone who isn't new to the phandom or fan culture in general, and isn't one of the really young people in the community- along with this probably not being how people have generally experienced shipping and fan culture over the years-this is just how i've viewed the development over the years. so idk if this makes sense to anyone, or if someone has had similar feelings/experiences to me, but i guess this can be taken with a grain of salt.

also sorry this is long, i really need to learn how to not write so much, especially at 3 am

okay damn i wrote this whole mess out and then hit preview to see a refreshed page with more stuff related to the topic

i totally agree with this view on shippers/shipping!

fundamentally, i don't think they're anything that really differentiates shippers and people who just think dnp are together. it's really all in how people identify themselves. (sidenote: i am so glad i read this before posting because i meant to talk about the idea of shippers being cringe but it slipped my mind while typing all the other junk out).

i can't count how many times i've been made fun of for being in a fandom where the fans are really intense (being into one direction and glee right as they started to hit the mainstream was really wild back in the day), so i think a lot of people were annoyed, frustrated, and embarrassed by people outside of their fandom's view on the members of the fandom and decided to abandon those labels, as you said. i also really like the point about it being a belief. while i do believe that the exterminates of fan culture are becoming a thing of the past, perhaps temporarily (taking into account the fan culture surrounding the beatles in the 60s and then looking at the huge rise in fan culture in the early 2000s), beliefs are often something people use to legitimize their opinions and internally justify them, so it only make sense for fandom members to use that when functioning within their fandoms.

Love to read you guys' interpretation!
I agree that the shipping question is a bit tricky because it comes down to everyone's interpretation of the term. If I am involved with next year's survey, I'll suggest that the team adds a definition to make sure everyone is on the same page.

But we can definitely look at the shipping/relationship relation split by age groups! I divided the sample at the age median which is 16. Sorry for the ugly tables, they're right out of the program.
Image
Cramer's V = .486; p < .001
Image
Cramer's V = .565; p < .001
The older group has less people who think that D&P's relationship has a platonic background but also ship them. Also overall more people with other thoughts and who disagree with shipping, and less people who ship it.

There is a pretty strong correlation for both groups (the Cramer's V number), and this might be due to the lack of definition for "shipping". Also keep in mind that we don't know what is the independent variable here, so we can't say if shipping influences what we think the relationship is, or vice versa. But there is definitely a correlation between the two.

But when it comes interpreting the math, I'd prefer to refer to @fondsmiles; I just like pressing buttons in a program :D

I personally thought that Dan might have been perceived more straight around 2012 and more not-straight after that, but there isn't so much difference after all.

edit: 500 posts whooo!
OMG yes! bless you! i saw your correlations were out on my twitter timeline earlier today and completely forgot to investigate further. i live for this stuff, statistics are so powerful. thanks for your hard work. (i did one uni subject of statistics years ago, and nearly had a breakdown at how hard i found it, not being a maths person. no idea how i passed. lol)

not to be a cynical sally, but i can't resist bringing it back to the survey method problem of we don't always do what we say. surveys and quizzes make us assess ourselves in the moment and we often click the answer we want to feel is true about ourselves. in that way it's an assessment of our anxieties about society, empathy, judgement, our own ego, blah blah, *even* when anonymous, and i find that fascinating. that's demonstrated in the 'i don't want to label him' responses, whilst there is intense projection and analysis and everything but the final touch of labelling in every corner of the phandom. it shows a strong culture surrounding them as creators and i believe it's one that's fostered their ability to feel confident saying in a 2015 interview that they don't wish to share their relationship status, and their lack of using self-referential language when it comes to labels publicly, whilst also behaving and speaking increasingly how they please, once again (showing more and more transparent ambiguity). while some view it as a contradiction (and these are the people that have the strongest negative opinions about them, that i see), i think it's a balance, one that the core phandom constantly re-adjusts and re-mimics.
Age/Did you attend TATINOF?

Thanks for the survey results ltrllysusan! The survey results are always very interesting and a fun read.

I'm finding the discussion of shipping vs. thinking they're together interesting. Personally, I usually just say I ship them because it's the simplest way to put it, though I've seen a lot more people say that they don't ship them but have a romantic connection recently. (watch me use every possible synonym for "think they're together" in one paragraph).

Honestly, I think the word shipping is slowly dying. I don't think I've used it (unironically) since my demon phase in like 2015, and I've seen it less. I think I've also seen less usage of the word "phan," though that might have more to do with the fact that I'm only interacting with people on IDB now as opposed to lurking on Instagram and tumblr.

Plus, more and more people I've seen have started to have the mindset of trying not to be in any way invasive or annoying, and I'm guessing what a lot of people do is let go of all of the shippy things they do
