I know I’m a lil late since the Powerpuff posts came up but some notes (quite a few actually) on the D&P attraction discussion below the cut. Love those animations, btw, especially Dans’ hair and devious little smirk.
While none of us can ever really know what drew Dan to Phil and Phil to Dan (truth be told, they may not even 100% know themselves…some of us have been there ), this conversation does get us all thinking about relationship chemistry (whether romantic, P-L-A-T-O-N-I-C, professional, etc.) in general. I readily admit to being among those who have a strong admiration for their bond and being curious about how they complement each other. To add to the Phil side of things, this is what I gather, based on comments they’ve made over the years about their work and about each other (warning: I suffer from that epic essay-writing condition when I get on a topic that interests me- feel free to read as much or as little as you like):
- I agree with your comment, mermaid blood, about Dan’s bravery. I immediately thought of one of Phil’s very early ls that Dan was on, where Dan said something about Phil being “a mess” (as in super nervous) and then, very reassuringly, “It’s [# of people] who like you, Phil, not scary people.” In spite of the idol/fan dynamic, I wonder if, even when they first met, Dan was the one to push Phil in this area a bit. Also related…
- OK, this is going to sound hokey but I think maybe Dan sees Phil in a way that others don’t (because they are distracted by the creativity, brilliance, etc.)? Tales of teen popularity struggles aside, Phil strikes me as the type of person that many are simply in awe of (because of his intelligence, talent, creativity, strangeness/is-he-an-alien, etc.) and don’t quite see as experiencing doubt, since he appears to overcome it so quickly. But Dan knows and appreciates that what he does is not so easy for him and takes work and courage every single day. Phil’s talked about being ‘extremely shy’ before uni (given that he’s also mentioned going stir-crazy without human interaction after a period of time, it seems like he’s a shy-ish or formerly shy extrovert) and mentions getting nervous before major events and performances (lately, he jokes around about not tripping or looking deer-in-headlights terrified in TATINOF FREEDOM Edition). He seems to be overcoming this more and more with each major milestone and having someone like Dan who can appreciate the importance of each step must be quite encouraging.
- Finally, attitudes towards unexpected change/challenges/etc. Phil’s hinted a bunch of times at not being the best at dealing with stressful situations, such as the story in TAABINOF (?) about how they thought they were going to miss their flight to Japan and Phil went into panic mode and ran across the airport (similar to the #whyisPhilrunning incident), when he talked about early BBC radio days and said something like ‘changing the plan is like my worst thing’ and Dan was talking about he does ‘the pacing thing with the hand.’ Existential crises aside, Dan seems like the type to keep an eye on the bigger picture and to roll with the punches, so to speak, which, at the very least, balances out during the creative process. Dan is also very logical, analytical, and diplomatic (e.g.- stepping in to address angry NY dad at Barnes and Noble; I didn’t see Phil being so much scared in that moment as kinda like ::strums guitar:: “fuck this shit, I’m out”…don’t know why exactly): probably a lot better at stepping back and thinking through all the implications of a situation carefully than what is projected in DINOF.
Reflecting on these, I tend to think of Dan (not DINOF but Dan) as being quite stable/grounded, even when he was younger. Having been through the dramatic-decision-to-leave-one-path-for-another thing, I know that it takes a tremendous amount of self-reflection and bravery to strike out like that. In TAABINOF, he talks at length about how much he planned and contemplated and prepared for his YouTube channel. He seemed to know exactly what he wanted to do even before he met Phil. The existential crises come when you’re hyper aware of the impact of what you’re doing and can see all of the potential results either way…if you don’t pull yourself together, make a choice, you risk getting stuck in that pit of despair and confusion (ahem, #relatable). Phil’s carpe diem attitude is just the tonic.
Hm. I started out being much more attracted to Phil but the more I think about it, the more Dan grows on me.
Re: Dan and Phil personalities being much more similar to one another than DINOF and AP: Did anyone else see this more after watching Phil’s badger game series on DAPG? When I saw it, I thought it was one of the closest things to that middle ground that we’ve seen.
OK, I'm gonna go make one of those Powerpuff mes now

That'd actually be kind of cool! I feel like that would be something their fans might be into though.
I tried to make myself on the powerpuff thing, but mine ended up being a clone of Phil's just with black clothes.

Absolutely love the discussion regarding what attributes brought Dan & Phil together. Thanks for providing the good reads.
As for the Powerpuff Yourself tweets, I genuinely don't think it's #spon. The avatar maker came out yesterday and started trending (and it has plenty of promo behind it without them contributing trust me). I think it's just something harmless for them to tweet about. (Fills Dan's tweet quota.)

regarding the possibility of this being the thing they did the voice acting for, i remember dan saying that the characters they voiced weren't human. i've never really seen the power puff girls, so i googled "are the powerpuff girls human?" and came across this quote on a forum discussing that very question:
"A golem is a form w/o a soul. The Powerpuff Girls have souls (at least they act like they do). I don't think they're human, but they're self-aware, and that's why I think Townsville citizens treat them as human."
apparently it's a matter of contention (does this mean that some characters in the show are human and some aren't? could this be the show they acted for? someone with knowledge of the lore of this show step in and set us all straight ) tbh it kind of seems a bit too high profile for them so i'm fairly sure it wasn't this but hey

kuensukki wrote:I'm going to throw out a new topic out there because D&P released a video so we won't get another one for ages so let's entertain ourselves. I always wonder what made Dan attracted to the initial AP persona and what made him stay after he found out the weird dark guy in his videos weren't actually him. Meeting and adoring a fan from afar is completely different from committing to them in real life which is what he did. What made them keep this friendship/relationship alive under the intense scrutiny and what made them each others sole comfort. I mean its safe to assume that they are probably the most important people in each other life so why did that come about? What did Dan see in Phil and what did Phil see in Dan that made them not really seek any other- be it business wise or relationship/friendship wise?
Here's my take on it. I think when Dan thirsted after Phil, it was just admiration for someone who was popular. Someone who was doing something they liked and being good at it. He probably appreciated the confidence AP exuded and the strangeness of him.
Now Dan's attraction (to friendship if you guys swing that way) is a little hard to decipher. I think in the beginning it was respect and awe. We see the fangirl comments he used to make on Phils videos. But the fact that he still holds that deep admiration even though he's established himself says this respect extended to something ore substantial. He's essentially the self proclaimed Phil Trash#1. Yes we see the flirting and everything but even more, the fact that he went out of his way for Phil and never questioned for a second whether he would move in with him speaks volumes to me. He really must have found something he loved and that above all made him stick along and put just as much into the relationship.
Phil on the other hand was probably attracted to Dan initially because of all the pictures and steamy skype sessions but everyone was flirty and promiscuous so what made Dan catch and hold Phil attention? I think he found someone genuine in Dan. Someone who would laugh at his jokes, share his interests, and is genuinely funny. Watch the first PINOF vids and Phil is holding back laughter form Dan's jokes. He was lonely and Dan helped ease that alot. I think he enjoyed that Dan turned to him for advice and gave him so much respect. He may have wanted to encourage Dan and give him confidence in his abilities because he saw something special that Dan himself still couldn't see. (if this is too fanfictiony sorry )
Their whole relationship fascinates me because at the end of the day they were two strangers online that found each other and formed this special bond (cough..destiny..cough). I see them as soulmates- whether they are endgame or not. At the end of the day we can psychoanalyze the hell out of them but they will be the only people that know each other though and though. And the fact that they seem to appreciate every quality of each other with fondness and endearment makes me happy.
OKAY THIS WAS A TRASH POST, ITS FLUFFY TO NO END
This is one of my favorite conversations that I have to myself in my head all the time
I haven't had time to read the next 2 1/2 pages of thread yet and have to leave soon, so apologies if I'm just repeating what others have contributed.
No question Dan fangirled Phil (well, more than that). Watching Phil's old videos that someone posted a few pages back (I'm so sorry I forget who but am grateful to!) put that same question back in my head. What was Dan passionately, irresistibly attracted to? Definitely way off beat, with a tendency towards psycho movies etc. I don't think Phil is psycho at all. He just thinks very differently from most people. He's the kind of creative person that could come up with a "Blair Witch Project". And maybe Dan, who is intelligent just saw what a unique talent that was.
Old Phil's videos would not appeal to me if I wasn't already "invested" in " ". I'd go "wow, kinda creepy, he could write horror movies" and be outta there because horror movies (and real life atrocities) are the least appealing thing my INFJ heart can take.
I suspect Phil was physically attracted to Dan (who'd blame him) and when his 22 year old self got to meet steamy Dan irl after steamy Skype sessions, well . . . you can read fanfic for that (OMG so much )
But at their core, they seem to also be very genuinely kind, caring people who have felt misunderstood/bullied, that share similar interests, and appreciate each other's sense humor. They literally hit the relationship/friendship jackpot.
I don't think in the very beginning they ever thought it would become what it is now. I don't think they were even trying to create what they have now. I think they were a couple smart, funny guys trying to make enough $ on Youtube to now have to have traditional jobs -- which is why the book and tour mean so much to them. They are realistic enough to know it could all go away tomorrow, but they are truly grateful for what they have so they celebrate it. Pretty wise for 20-somethings! And to still have the quality of relationship they have for as long as they have had it. Very unusual, and makes me believe they have a lot of depth to them.
Another person who seems to have a bit of Phil's quirkiness towards darkness is Bertie. I remember this video of him and Dan (hope it embeds)

Phil may have been the one who was easiest to start and continue a conversation with (I mean, if they can talk on skype for 5 hours, pfft) and who returned that attention the most.
This. I always wonder whether Dan gave the same intensity of fan boy attention to a handful of Youtubers (particularly from the UK) and he just got lucky that Phil noticed his admiration. I remember he mentioned that he was a fan of Charlie McDonnell but during a meet and greet he was heartbroken coz he didn't recognise him despite starting his channel. Dan was really a fan boy.
Maybe it's my conservative upbringing but it really bothers me that Dan went to Manchester several times just for Phil. What did his parents say? Alone for days in a strangers house? Really?! If I didn't find their relationship endearing I'll just think that it was a college student who took advantage of his high school student stalker. I really think their questionable beginnings is a factor why they can't easily come out as a couple
he was 18, though, graduated, and working when he visited Phil. his parents let him go to another country at 16 with his then girlfriend, and he has a story of being alone in a park with his friend at midnight when he was 8. they were just less conservative/controlling parents, is all. 18 is also considered an adult where i'm from, most people I knew moved out of home after highschool. (as did I)
they may have had an issue with Phil, however, we just don't know (and probably never will). Dan's sad/stressed tweets from that time are too ambiguous.
Ah, the plight of the eighteen year old - so many hormones, so many life changes, so many things to be stressed about. (That's not even sarcasm, it's almost impossible to just be a happy well-adjusted eighteen year old.)
But it does make for some fascinating psychoanalysis to apply all those moody vague tweets to the various situations in his life and see what lines up best under speculation.

Omg I miss Bertie's old content quite a bit, I love this video of him and Dan! Never fails to make me laugh. Even though it was scripted, it's nice to see Dan somewhat taken out his comfort zone. I could never see Phil making/being in a video like this, it's entirely not in keeping with his sense of humour. I mean, imagine Phil answering the question about why his roommate isn't a black person lol

The Pentagram is a symbol of a star encased in a circle. Always with 5 points and each has its own meaning. The upward point of the star is representative of the spirit. The other four points all represent an element; earth, air, fire, and water. All these things contribute to life and are a part of each of us. The pentacle is not an evil symbol. Some people think it means devil worshiping and bad things like that but that is not the case.
Thanks Mama_Phan! Totally agree
I think that's Dan and his ironic humor. Dan has expressed he believes more in science than religion and the pentagram is a recognizable symbol that can be (isn't always) associated with that. It's a spiritual symbol. I think Dan is spiritual, but not "religious" (#relatable)
It's been said here before, but I think are deeply conscious of themselves and their phan base. Their fame has resulted in them needing their own little bubble to be themselves in. But they are creative and funny and probably need to humor themselves with this whole thing to keep themselves grounded.
Again, impressively wise for 20-somethings, and part of why I remain

I'll one-up you on the hokeyness meter: I don't think either of them is particularly comfortable and confident without the other. I do agree that Dan's in-the-moment calm counterbalances the anxiety Phil feels when plans are changed or threatened abruptly, but I'm not sure without Phil to focus on that Dan would roll with the punches quite so easy. Dan seems very bolstered by having someone else to, in a way, care of and center himself on and that works well with his impulsive nature when something calls for an immediate reaction.
And I think that the dynamic is reversed the rest of the time. I think Dan is more the person to sit around inventing problems where there are none or stressing himself endlessly over possible failed outcomes that may never come to be, and Phil is the one that stays calm in those situations and won't allow Dan's anxieties to become a self-fulfilling prophecy.
I can see those qualities manifesting early on, too. Phil wanted Dan to visit him, he pushed Dan to buy the tickets (and publicly) and was a source of enthusiasm and comfort when Dan might have been nervous about making the trip to begin with, and once they were there in the moment Phil was suddenly unsure Dan's confidence (and, yes, braveness) emerged.
They may find shades of that behavior in other situations in their lives but I think it's strongest between the two of them, some peculiar and perfect combination of their personalities that keeps them on track and, obviously, successful (privately and career-wise).
once again am i speculating or just writing fanfic, the world will never know

Agree!
And that reminded me of a question that has been lingering in my mind for a long time. Do they themselves realised that they are not so confident without each other, and try to change it to become more independent in their future career???
Because what Phil did last year, passing off the opportunity of interviewing the hunger game cast, i interpreted as Phil actively pushing Dan out of his nest. (and i suspect he supported or maybe even persuaded Dan when Dan first got the BBC 3 offer)

Sorry for confusion but are we sure that Phil was even offered these opportunities? Perhaps I missed something but I assumed only Dan was offered the chance to interview the cast and do the documentary.
Regardless, why do you assume Phil would push Dan to do these rather than Dan taking them up himself? I don't think there is any evidence to suggest this might be the case, and imo I thought Dan seemed quite enthused about the solo documentary project.

Thanks mermaind blood, jaej and alittledizzy, starlight-still and anyone else who I missed, thanks for making such compelling answers!
karma-yeah I literally think about it all the time in my head so yesterday I felt like typing out all the ideas, it was pretty therapeutic. D&P did luck out in finding each other. I think that as mermaid blood said its much harder to decipher Phil's attraction to Dan because aside from physical/common interests he never gave more inclination about his feelings. But its clear he fell hard for Dan especially seeing the voldy vid. So that made me question who loved more initially and who loved more later. Every relationship/friendship has on person who is more invested. Are D&P the exception- are they 50-50, or did one try harder to maintain it. Even as keeping their friendship which we see they value above all else. Dan says Phil was his first best friend so obviously he would like to maintain that, but Phil, who seemed to have some really close friends like Adam, completely put Dan above them. Who sat down in later 2013/2014 (cuz you guys gave me perspective on 2012) and said I want to fix this and I want to maintain what we have.

Can't say about the doc, but in their joint younows (Nov. 14?), Dan jokes that Phil didn't go because he had a haircut and then Phil said something to the effect of, no, he could have rescheduled the haircut, but Jennifer Lawrence was Dan's "thing" so he wanted to let him have that opportunity.

We assume that Phil was also offered the project because Dan said it in a live show. He also said that Phil didn't want to do the gaming documentary. I think Phil was very nervous about doing an interview on his own so he must have encouraged Dan to do it but sat himself out. He tends to blurt to wrong things and all youtuber interviews to a degree end up being awkward so I think Phil wanted to prevent that. He still got his 7 sec app in (#spon) but did not deal with the anxiety that come with interviews. I don't know if anyone remembers last year in BBC awards, they interviewed a band who didn't play along with the game and instead of improvising Phil got really agitated/flustered with their lack of interest. He does not do well with people not accommodating, probably because he may be stubborn in his ideas.
I hope Phil gets to do a documentary for BBC preferably with animals, I was watching his crocodile adventures in Florida and they were great!

I agree with everything you said, and the bold part made me crack up. That's exactly how I imagine Phil dealing with anything stressful, like the voldy video, etc
I also like your point about Dan seeing the real Phil. It makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside.
It's interesting how much they balance each other out. Dan is the logical and stable one who can deal with stressful situations, but there are times when I've seen Dan be completely rude or awkward towards someone and Phil just saves the day with his kindness. It's funny to watch. I'll put my favorite example under a spoiler

Thanks for the clarification I don't know if I think either of them are particularly good at interviews. The Brits ones are all pretty awkward and I don't think celebrities really 'get' them.
I agree, I can imagine Phil doing some kind of animal documentary (though I'm not sure whether he has the voice for the proper BBC voiceover ones)!

I made my own versions of D&P because I think they're in denial about what they actually look like (well, tbf I'm in denial too, because I gave Phil a quiff. A girl can dream ).
(P.S. Yes, I flipped Dan...none of the hairs went the right direction lol ).
Also, everyone's posts are great! Keep them coming! Such interesting reads!!
Your versions are so cute! I like Dan in plaid more
it reminded me of this tweet from earlier (in a way). Dan thinks this is more accurate. No quiff, but also no smile.
On the current discussion, it's so interesting and I wish I could articulate something good, but everyones thoughts have been insightful On a kinda similar thought, I've always wondered what their families and their friends thought of the other at first? Especially considering their ages, locations, youtube statuses, etc.
