Well, ahem, this is a bit of a #spon, but I've been working on a 2009/2010!phan series, and this one has the first kiss and first....other things. I take a slightly non-traditional tack, but I intend it to still be cute!

What Uma Thurman Saw

The others that spring to mind are, unsurprisingly, also by IDB'rs.

This is a chaptered fic especially about the long lead-up over Skype to their first meeting:

Stay with me by winstonlives

This actually is about just before their first meeting, but it is definitely cute and has stuck in my head:

December 20: the distance between by dizzy

I've been binging a lot of fics from this thread lately after exhausting the first 50 or so pages of the Dan/Phil tag on AO3, so thanks for the recs, everyone! A lot of gems I missed out on, but the number of deleted works did make me sad. Ah well, 'tis the fandom life.

I'm sure a lot of you have seen this, but deletable_bird just posted a long, delicious university AU!

Summary: It took Dan a record-breaking eleven times of being in the same physical space as his current crush before he managed to speak a word to him. Fluff/humor/smut, 10.8k

It's got painter!Dan and sunshine!Phil, plus a great Louise and my guilty pleasure of mixing in text screenshots in fics. It's very soft and lovely, but also some nice exploration of Dan's artsier and shyer side. I love the language and the imagery, especially the ending. If you're at all into AUs, hop on it so we can gush about it together.

Our Threadbare Lies by ramonaspeaks is probably my absolute favorite 2009 fic. It's a non-canon version sticking to the very canon timeline, and written amazingly well. I highly recommend it.

I just read this one that is the most wonderful. It's an AU where Dan's a painter student and Phil's a student too and it's pining and crushing and beautiful and feels really on character and light and

the sun a souvenir

(No We're Not) Friends by markiplayer - 6k AU where the 'straight guy realizes he's into his roommate' trope is done as pleasantly as I've ever seen it done before.
Thoughts and a Train Conversation by waveydanrises - really nice introspective 2009 Dan fic
Safe and Slow by phanpunk - post-BONCAS smut
An Awful Boyfriend and a Hard Manly Man by keeplovinanyway - Dan's in a mood after playing Mark of Oxin (smut).
The Limits of Terminology by agingfangirl - really lovely piece on labels

i would like to add my recommendation for waiting outside the lines because it is such a nice version of young phil and i kind of want to hug it forever and that is only 50% because it's mine ;)

bluebird by lvckyphan on ao3 (anything by them really)

teeth by lvckyphan (amazing. amazing. amazing. AAAAAH)

slightly happier ones
details of an asteroid by dantiloquent
so many stars (can't remember author but it's on ao3)

hunterfics/dandrogynous just posted a post-Florida fic: Just Need A Light. It's a little bit of Dan-introspection mixed with the warmest, coziest fluff, with an awesome Martyn/Cornelia cameo. There's so many great little details that makes this fic feel like reality, and the hopeful note threaded throughout is wonderful. I read the entire thing with the silliest smile and the ending (the entire thing, really) makes me feel so happy

two longer fic recs:

woken from a dream (by my own name) by opendoor - superhero au but like a really good superhero au where it still feels entirely like Dan and Phil all the way through. completed!

restlessness by phantasyprone - a WIP set after tour ends, but the first ten chapters are an arc by themselves that wraps up nicely (and happily) so it's safe to read if you - like me - are wary of unresolved angst

I usually enjoy your recommendations dizzy but not this one. Phantasyprone needs to spit out that thesaurus they've swallowed. All the obscure multi-syllable words made it completely unreadable for me. I couldn't get through the first chapter.
(Sorry phantasyprone if you read this. Idk if you're an IDP member or not. Your writing would be great if you would stop writing like an intellectual and write like a regular person.)

Hey everyone! I'm a newbie to fanfiction and have been working my way through recommendations on here and on Tumblr. I don't think this one has been mentioned on here as, until a couple of days ago, it was still a WIP (I did a quick search and couldn't see any mention of it). I've massively enjoyed this fic and it's a real rollercoaster of ups and downs as it spans 2011-2016...it's VERY long (almost 200k words) but well worth a read:

Birthday Sex: http://archiveofourown.org/works/561682 ... s/12940408

Can I also just say that I've particularly enjoyed many fics by IDB authors...there are too many to mention and I'd probably leave someone out by mistake but I really appreciate the quality of writing and can't wait to discover my next favourite fic!

Thanks for the rec! It was just the kind of a messed-up thing I would (and did) read at 3 am. I really enjoyed it, but since it was also emotionally harrowing, I now feel like reading some sweet fluff. In case anyone else needs a fluff fix, I can recommend Our Manchester Days by waveydnp. It's a very well-written 2009 one-shot that in my opinion manages to portray the nervousness and excitement of getting to know someone new better than most 2009 fics out there.

Definitely second the rec of Our Manchester Days above!

Also - rizzo wrote a fic! And it's amazing. A Soft Place to Land - perfect lovely soft warm Phil characterization emotional h/c.

Seconded!! ESPECIALLY this gem. Come Back, Be Here
It's just the perfect mix of adorable 2009-ness, and the truly shitty aspects of LDRs.

The_Blonde has blessed us with chapter 1 (of 4) of a new fic: (when you gonna realise) it was just that the time was wrong. Rec-ing before I've even read it because I know it's going to be gorgeous.

@ Ickle, have you started Ships that pass in the night?

Seconding Lain and IckleMissMayhem's recs of AgeingPhangirl's Fic Every Day in June series - they're all amazingly well written! I especially loved Come back, be here and Baby we're such a fucking cliché (even if that second one did break my heart ) And of course the latest one: Ships that pass in the night is beautifully written.

Again, I'd like to second Lain's rec of The_Blonde's new fic: (when you gonna realise) it was just that the time was wrong. The first chapter has me absolutely hooked, and I cannot wait for the next chapter to be posted! I think this goes without saying, but the Art Thief series is one of my all time favourites!

Finally, jilliancares' current WIP Cat and Mouse has me hooked too. I never normally go for WIPs, but I really enjoyed her last two chaptered fics (Burn and Bloom and A Royal Pain) and she uploads every Saturday without fail, so I gave it a read, and it's really good (just killing me slightly having to wait a week between each chapter )!

Wow, I think this is the biggest post I've ever made on here! Back to desperately trying to not have a breakdown over my dissertation I go :thumb:

I loved this And also seconding or thirding the rec of Ships that pass in the night - I literally just started in this morning and it's so lovely!

(and thanks for saying such lovely things Lain and Waggle! I started it while procrastinating from my PBB and I'm very glad that you're liking it )

(when you gonna realise) it was just that the time was wrong) A wip but it's fantastic so far, especially if you like fate fics. It will probably update reasonably quickly if the author's last story (art thief au which I think is on here) is anything to go by.

(lol I've been lurking on idb for a while and made an account just to rec this)
