Dan & Phil Part 46: Some kind of a gay backstory

All I got from this video is an understanding as to just how far Dan will go to join in on the Lester family vacation, which very, very far and this information is making my heart hurt in a good way.

I'm very at the IDB detectives. Y'all made exactly the correct call on BahamaGate so early! He looks great here, and the story is quite entertaining. Though tbh, I've never been too into Dan's storytime vids. I tend to watch them once or twice to absorb the info, and then go on my merry way.

I like the glimpses at the Florida vacation house we got. Very spacious and warm; fits the Lester clan well! How long are they planning on staying there? It's going on three weeks now, isn't it?

Not at all to downplay or dismiss why Dan decided to not do a LS (I support the decision 100% ), but I'm a little sad we missed out on a LS from Florida. It would've been interesting to see how he handles the questions about location, the vacation, etc., and AFAIK, it would've been the first LS while traveling for leisure.

god I love the video, I always adore his story telling and how he makes so much effort with sketches and editing, that's not something I am used to from the other youtubers i love.

it's really ridiculous what happens to him sometimes! also, wow, the forum explanation was almost spot on, apart from it not being because of the spontaneous decision to stay with phil's family, but only because of a confusion from the visas (unless he's lying, and did plan to get home earlier like it could seem with the liveshow he hinted at, but idk, I always try to go with seeing the truth in things)

funny video, despite knowing what was occuring and why for some of it. phil's banter with his airport security man sounds funny, and the Bahama's airport security being chill sounded so hilarious in comparison to America.

dan's excuses for staying with the Lester's are vv funny tho - by peer pressure can I make the guess that Phil wanted Dan to stay so "peer pressured" him into it (despite the fact that we all know Dan wanted to stay, perhaps there was some hesitancy with him feeling like he was interrupting their family holiday - or am I just over analysing Dan's sneaky tweet?)

Excellent. I slightly less romantic story that I had in my head (indecisive Dan is persuaded to stay by Phil) but highly entertaining. Love the sketches, his hair and shirt. So happy this was filmed at the vacation home.

I guess a few days just turned into weeks because of the travel stress. Maybe they'll just stay until VidCon. It's less than a month away. Just film some collabs with Phil, some board games with the fam and we'll all be happy. (No, I expect they'll be back by next week).

Well, that was dramatic, especially in the retelling. If his mother ever watches his videos I can imagine she might roll her eyes with a "Calm down, Daniel" or maybe that's just me. I laughed a few times, though it was a shame he didn't even get to the beach and ended up running through the airport. Always like a baby giraffe, poor boy. Scary encounter with border control and then the taxi driver too, I'd ask how he gets himself into these situations if he hadn't just told us every detail.

At least he's had a nice long holiday, even if it has involved some tedious renaming of old links. I like that shirt, his hair, freckles and the holiday home backdrop too, all very pretty. at that tweet too. Poor guy can't win, everyone thought he was lying or joking and really it was neither.

sounds dumb but youve just got to think that theyll be over soon, and if youve kept your head throughout the exam season and not procrastinated much the likelihood is youll have done much better than you may have expected

first of all: kudos to Asky160 for originating the visa theory which turned out to be actually true!

i liked the video! i thought the editing was on point for it and it was what made me laugh the most. and i can't help it, i just like his storytelling a lot. also i'm honestly a bit impressed at dan's impersonation of the visa lady, i have a vivid picture in mind now. i can't help to compare it to "i nearly blinded myself" (which is one of my favourites), simply because they're both airport stories and the doris/visa lady bits are somewhat similar, i suppose. if i'm going there, i think "i nearly blinded myself" had a bit better pacing, but it also might just be personal taste.

all in all, i'm happy dan uploaded. i needed something to cheer me up today. but i'm also glad he took the opportunity to make this video without brooding over it too long (at least that's what it seems like).

on a sidenote, i had to laugh a bit when he explained the holiday situation at the counter like "my...........friend over there". the truly unexpected #relatable content of this story, awkward introduction!edition. but i don't think it was intentional.

Wow, Dan's tweet replies have me more fascinated than the video itself.

a) Peer pressure - acknowledging that Phil wanted him to stay. Combined with the fact that in the video he actually said he was staying with Phil and Phil's family... amazing. What is this world we live in.

b) we don't really have to know everything and why - Bless him for this honesty. I wonder if this is something we'll hear reiterated in the near future? Less obfuscation about things in their life, more blatantly acknowledging that they're not obligated to share and on our time frame even if they do.

c) "as long as it's all bants no angst" - he doesn't like it when fandom assumes the worst in a situation? As much as I like to analyze things from every angle, it never really occurred to me that Dan might have specific opinions on the reactions to things. Most specifically I'm thinking of the moving thing now, did it bother him that so many people assumed he and Phil would move separately? Or that every time they have an announcement people are concerned and upset?

I guess I'm worse than a grammar nazi ( call me a truth nazi) but I don't like that Dan lied at playlist about almost not being let in bc he didnt look like his old visa photo and the lady saying "Guys don't straighten their hair." In this vid he reveals he had a new curly haired visa pic. So the lying was just for comedy? Why such bashing comedy if no one actually said that? I don't know maybe the incident happened on another trip and he just adapted it to use at Playlist. I just don't get why the lies that are easily caught.

I did enjoy the vid, but don't see the tan you guys are seeing. No explanation of why Phil didn't go with him. I guess maybe he just wanted some recharge time? But still, first time in the Bahamas without Phil?

This video didn't make much of an impression on me. I didn't really laugh or anything, but I'll rewatch it. I swear, why does all this crazy stuff happen to him? I'm glad he cleared up what happened though.

Any Theories surrounding the shirt TSA!dan is wearing ? Since I'm 99.99% sure it's not his, I'm guessing it's Phil's (although since it doesn't look like anything phil brought to florida/even owns, and b/c it looks big even on dan, I kinda want to think it's Phil's dad's. imagine how funny it would be for dan to be planning this video and running everything past phil, and when they got to costuming phil realizing how perfect one of his dad's shirts would be for the tsa agent just, dan being that deep in the lester family )

I missed the window to edit my post, so here's a little tangent: how Dan was framing his motivations in the video (stay a few extra days, tie up loose ends with the rebrand, do some more work) and what he was implying with his tweets ("peer pressure", didn't plan on staying that long) is interesting.

It could be that he's tailoring his responses to his audience (much wider casual viewers on YT vs. dedicated fans stalking the twitter replies), which is something that he tends to do. It'll be interesting to see how he re-tells the motivations in his LS, which is when he's the most candid (the kangaroo costume thing comes to mind immediately).

It could also be that he's picking at pieces of the entire story to share. Maybe he was originally planning on doing the Miami couple-y thing with just Cornelia and Martyn, and then flying back to the UK and skipping the rest of the family vacation? It would fit with the LS implying how he needed some alone time and the tweet saying how he didn't plan on staying that long and got peer pressured.

I do like the tweet about how we don't necessarily have to know everything, which fits their new 'be more open but on their terms' trend really well.

All in all, this video is spawning a lot of really interesting things to think about.

Wait, why would we need an explanation for why Phil didn't go? It was just a there-and-back trip, Phil didn't have any visa issue to correct, and flying sucks on a good day. I think that's more than enough explanation lol.

I love his storytelling and the editing in that video. I know people rag on youtubers for being overly dramatic when it comes to their stories but Dan's stories are entertaining and the little skits he adds to them make them better. Some people just have a better knack for it than others, because in the hands of someone else, that could have been a really boring video.

I haven't had many occasion to travel to the US (I live a few hours from the border) but crossing to the US always stresses me tf out so I sympathise with the guilty feeling at customs. One time a friend I was travelling with had forgotten he had a ~controlled substance~ in one of his bags which we only discovered once we were already in the US, so that was a fun realisation. I'm always feeling paranoid I'll do something equally stupid now.

I think that the passport story probably happened but Dan didn't feel the need to include it bc he knew it was already on the internet. I don't think he'd lie about something like that tbh.
