That was something. First Phil was dressed up as a pumpkin, then his knees were out, and suddenly I was listening to a man talking about Smart Bidding.

But damn,, after all that horny tweeting from Dan it seems like Phil finally got his revenge by talking about making a YouTube channel with another man

I am deeply both perplexed and entertained by the google video.

I love seeing Phil's face. I love watching him be weird. It's fun and interesting to watch him and his little awkwardness-patterns and gestures when he's out of his comfort zone. I feel like his accent was slightly more strong/british here than in his usual vids and I find that very interesting.

Then I am left with so many questions: the first being who is the target audience for this video?? Why is Phil in it/did they choose Phil as a host?? From my very limited knowledge base in having a sister that studied business and works as an account manager and a mother who worked in a tech business where holiday search/sales spikes were a thing they dealt with what I have gathered is that it's?? about 1. ad/promo of some of google's advertisement tools ("smart bidding") 2. something about reducing stress during "busy peak season" which my only educated guess for is holiday times and/or specific times of year where ads are seen as extra important/profitable??
I fully don't understand who exactly this video is for, because it doesn't really seem like Phil is in it to attract a new audience that might be interested in the topic, it seems very business-targeted? Idk it's giving me very much compulsory team activities in the office to "boost moral" but not really doing shit vibes. Giving something that will be linked to in a newsletter email that no one actually reads but management put production budget into it anyway.

Anyway, I absolutely don't understand the purpose but I'm not complaining, it was nice to see Phil's face and I would assume it was a decent gig if he took it up.

Lastly, the 'please subscribe' plug at Phil's intro bit made me cackle horrendously

. The awkwardness/put on desperation of the bit combined with the timing with of AP falling under 4M subs again is just too good.

I definitely get the impression that Phil is just a hired host for this and that his familiarity and general lack of controversy with youtube is probably a selling point for google, but that this is in no way meant to expand Phil's audience or even really be a video that strives for high view count with a general audience. Like, they' seem to be literally assuming that people watching it don't know who he is since he introduced himself and they did a little montage. It'll be fascinating to see if future videos in the series weave his career into it more or if he'll just be introducing the guests and doing a little activity bit each time.

Always great to see his face!! As always he sounded a little awkward with the script, and it's hard not notice those moments where there would have been innuendos or stupid jokes if that other tall guy had been there. But any Phil content is delicious and Ali seems nice.

I'm also struggling with the concept. I guess it's a series to teach people about google products so they wanted someone who is comfortable in front of the camera to host? The channel itself is a bit weird, there are some podcasty videos, interviews and some creator highlights, but they mostly have a few hundred views each. The view count is off for Phil's video but I'm guessing it will at least get a few thousand just for being Phil (while there's a Gordon Ramsey video with 700 views). Fascinating.

My best theory is that google normally would do a in person conference or seminar on how to prepare for peak season in digital marketing and sales, and that this is a pandemic friendly option.

Is there a large overlap between people who want to know about Smart Bidding and people who want to see Phil carve a pumpkin? Kudos if you fall into both groups but I definitely skipped the informational part haha

As a person whose entire career is buying media... aka exactly what they're talking about here (yikes, gross, etc)... This was both correct and incredibly boring. Google, Facebook, and every other advertising platforms always try to put entertaining content together for Q4 (the holiday season), because there's quite a lot of brands that ONLY spend in Q4 or really ramp up their advertising dollars then. (See: Why YouTubers make so much content in October/November/December. Because we're giving them SO much money).

It seems like this is just one of those educational videos for folks who aren't super well-versed in what to do when that time comes around and they're buying Google ads. Smart Bidding has existed for a while and is generally a "best practice" of sorts... So for the likes of most media buyers... we know this already. Like... he's literally defining the technology, so you'd really have to have never run Google Ads for this to be useful. (Which, again, could be the case if the holiday season is the only time you do.)

All that's to say, I don't know why they needed Phil for this, but like. It's Google. The amount of money they spent on Phil will be a drop in the bucket for the amount of money they'll get back on people buying ad space for Black Friday.

Congrats for him reading out your story!

I’m glad for the insider perspective on this cos I also was flummoxed why he was presenting it and skipped over the info. I loved his attempt at the pumpkin once again going a bit wrong and almost just being one big hole for eyes and mouth. Honestly, the intro was awkward, he’s not like that on his own videos, and he can act sometimes, just other times not so much.
