Dan & Phil Part 61: The 2017 Mince Pie Codex
I don't know if it's a culture thing or age thing but I had literally never heard of Poptropica before and after watching it I think I would've been okay with never knowing? There was some okay banter, most notably Phil's comment about the Mile High Club. But it was mostly just very boring to me, I zoned out a lot and I'm not even tired (because I slept all day oops). And there's still something creepy about grown men joining platforms like these made as safe spaces for kids.. D&P don't have bad intentions, but they might inspire other adults to check it out and be weird there

I didn't really enjoy this video at all, but I'll forgive them because of the mile high club mention. It will keep me going until tomorrow's video I guess. For some reason the video was really hard for me to follow.
I liked the Shelter one, I did enjoy the Pottermore quiz even tho it wasn't really gaming, and now this... I hope it keeps getting better. Have they became too lazy and structural with gaming videos? Dan's always yelling even when he doesn't have to be, and the games they have played lately have been really easy to film. They keep playing too much the same games imo. The gaming livestreams are the best gaming content nowadays, but I don't get why they keep playing the same games in those too.

Oh ok lmao thanks! I'm now finding it weird that in all my years on the internet and consuming english media I've never come across that expression before (or maybe I just forgot).
And yeah I feel you sonicgreen, what they've played so far seem kinda like odd choices to me but maybe they have their reasons, who knows. I do hope we get
• some cosy fun christmassy games like the who wants to be a millionaire/questions one (i have no clue what the title actually is)
• some where they move around like switch or just dance
• anything that involves a handicap
• a few longer, more "classic" video games or stuff like bobble bubble

Ok but I need some Dark Souls or something to make up for this tomorrow, cause that's not "Gaming"mas, lads. Never heard of that game either.
And before everyone comments how they were sitting on top of each other - for whatever reason, they played on a Mac (as evidenced by the screenshot save menu) so it's a pretty tiny screen.

I just didn’t enjoy the game really, Phil wasn’t that entertaining in it so maybe it was a mixture but I did find the game particularly boring hence why I haven’t rushed to watch them both play it.fancybum wrote: Sun Dec 03, 2017 10:12 pm
Oh lol. You just didn’t enjoy the game itself the first time or? Because most people who didn’t enjoy Phil’s solo vids seem to not like it because it was boring so if that’s a factor, Dan loudly rushing helps in that respect. But if it’s the game itself then yeah, not much to say there. Oh well, hopefully they have a slightly more exciting pick for tomorrow!
I’m not going to complain too much, it’s only day 3 and they always come with the goods it’s just a shame the first 3 haven’t really been my thing.

I think I do agree with how Dan and Phil need to do more Christmassy games... but that Poptropica video made me so :') (and to children at heart, poptropica is v good you must play; also bin weevils and moshi monsters lmao). But Dan calling the oBVIOUS giant in the sky (with the castle and shit?? the big ass purple toes??) God triggered me so much, like don'T RUIN IT YOU DON'T EVENK NOW THE STORY SO GO AWAY FINIH THE GAME FIRST U OH SO RELATABLE PHILOSOPHICAL TWAT
Yeah, I finished 35 islands in my day.

I actually think that they probably are looking at the games people are requesting now, and giving some of them a go - which is sort of reaching for content but also sort of not since the response even on this forum proves that there was an audience that got excited over the idea of them playing it.sonicgreen wrote: Sun Dec 03, 2017 10:10 pm Yikes ok update: why do I feel like they are absolutely REACHING for content?? But if that's what they're doing, then it really makes me wish that more people were suggesting better games for them to play. I'm definitely of the opinion that I can take a majority of shitty flash games if we're getting this much content, but I do kind of want them to at least be things that are mildly entertaining and this def wasn't. (They were. The game itself wasn't.)

So... that was underwhelming
, like all of gamingmas so far, unfortunately. I wish they would play some fun nostalgic arcade style games! It feels like they have just run out of inspiration for games
Tell me if this isn't appropriate, but I've thought of a really great (imo) DvsP idea for them and I actually made my first ever youtube comment
in the poptropica video to tell them so if you all could like my comment on the video maybe they could see it?

Geez that was boring. Don't know the game and I don't think I missed anything based on this video. :') I agree with the person who mentioned Dan seems a bit off this gamingmas, I have seen him more smiley and I miss it!
Too bad I actually haven't enjoyed a single video this year, I keep thinking "that's okay, there will be a new video tomorrow" but can't reassure myself with that thought if this is the level of content they're going for lol. But I still have hope, there's still 21 (?) days left! In the meantime I'm just going to rewatch videos from gamingmas 2016 (I LOVE who wants to be a millionaire).

I think my gamingmas low is caused by how good spooky week was, and I might have had my expectations high bc of that. I mean, spooky week was awesome and I seriously liked everything about it, but now I'm mostly like, blah, okay. Shelter 2 wasn't really enjoyable bc of all the shouting, I think I won't rewatch it ever. I liked the Pottermore video, bc I'm a huge potterhead. And this one was just... Not my thing tbh. Idk, I think I need to go back and watch Spooky week videos again or something haha. (I'm very tired and i feel like I'm not making any sense, sry)
Honestly, same. I'm just ecstatic to get a dose of my deppy drug every day for the foreseeable future (insert their disclaimer about how it might not be every day). Yes, these videos aren't amazing, but I'm just happy to see their smiley faces.Whommel wrote: Sun Dec 03, 2017 10:58 pm I feel like maybe I'm just to easy to please, but I love every single video even a kids game I've never heard of and don't care about. I agree that they are looking at games people are requesting, and there seems to be some positive reaction. My guess is that a lot of the twitter crowd is younger (and that's probs where they see most requests), and were requesting the game for nostalgia purposes; and like you said, there's some people on here that loved it and got excited about it. And don't get me wrong, that's great that some of the audience got nostalgic and excited about the game. I just hope there's not too many of these "nostalgia" based games - at least not the ones teens are recommending, because (as you can see on this forum) a lot of us are too old to even have heard of this game, and it just ends up being a boring kids game rather than a cute road down memory lane. (I hope that didn't come out harsh or demeaning - of course it's great that the teenagers / younger viewers enjoy these kinds of videos, I just think it's clear that the older portion of the audience are definitely not fans of these kinds of games).alittledizzy wrote: Sun Dec 03, 2017 10:27 pmI actually think that they probably are looking at the games people are requesting now, and giving some of them a go - which is sort of reaching for content but also sort of not since the response even on this forum proves that there was an audience that got excited over the idea of them playing it.sonicgreen wrote: Sun Dec 03, 2017 10:10 pm Yikes ok update: why do I feel like they are absolutely REACHING for content?? But on a positive note, deppy were still fairly entertaining in this vid, and phil continues to push his boundaries which is great (and v entertaining).

I think with the nostalgia or flash games in general, it works better when they have a sense of attachment to the games. Like club penguin, the impossible quiz and things like that felt more natural whereas with this, they didn't seem excited by the game. I had never heard of the game before so maybe that's why i didn't love it, i'm hoping for that the rest of gamingmas has videos that i like more.
also everyone already discussed it but i loved phil making mile high club jokes that was glorious

It looks to me like they are looking at the comments after the videos and picking what the majority suggest. So I went back to look at some and they seem pretty good:
Splatoon-never played it myself but I think dnp would really like it
More dream daddy-obviously, which dan already said they would
Overwatch-would be a good dan vs Phil
Mystic Messanger- I’ve never played this but I’m pretty sure I’ve seen this suggested for about a year now
Mario Kart- the person who said this wants them to do a not my arms challenge out of it and it has 300 likes
So hopefully they will actually read the comments and play actual games. Like last year was just unbelievably good so it may be hard to live up to but the good thing is that there’s a potentially better video every day

Definitely ambivalent about this video, not quite sure if I liked it. I was a little excited because Poptropica was a big part of my childhood, but I was one of the earlier, "OG" users so this newer version was pretty foreign to me. It was actually really weird, because it was reminiscent of my childhood but literally so different from how the game was when I used to play it, I was a little shook by how much it's changed actually
I remember when there was literally only 3-4 islands to play, guess I'm old now
Hoping that they do better videos than this going on, it was a little meh apart from the raunchiness from Lester and weird, half-sense of nostalgia I got from it
The air soft as that of Seville in April,
and so fragrant that it was delicious to breathe it.

I think I need a Phil-led Animal Crossing game or a board game to restore my faith a little. The last three days haven’t been ‘bad’ so to say but I think you have to mix the type of game up a bit boys - I don’t want 7 days in a row of intensive, 30 minute focused ‘serious’ games (a la Dan Outlast) bc realistically I don’t have the time or the attention span. TLDR Mix up the flash games a bit please!
I also think the problem is that it seems that they are not pre-filming. Like I’m pretty sure they started making vids for gamingmas last year towards the end of November. So with this they can’t make long in-depth games since they have to crank out a lot of content
I think DnP found the game boring themselves, they spliced the heck out of the video to the point where I had no clue what was going on
. I just don't get their choices sometimes, like there's more games than ever available for literally ever genre? Do they think we'd get bored of a more engaging and in-depth game? Would it be so bad to play a game they'd play themselves and just film it casually? Decent bants, but they can do a lot better....
Reading people's comments about how they're perceiving Dan in these gamigmas videos has me thinking that if he is feeling off or just preoccupied it could be that talk he has coming up. He might not even be consciously thinking about it but any type of speaking engagement can be anxiety inducing. Someone said yesterday, I can't remember who sorry, that Phil seemed to be leading the videos so far and that could also be Phil picking up some slack since he doesn't have to be anxious about the talk thing.
I'm just thinking outloud. He could be totally into gamingmas and people are just seeing something that isn't there but it did seem like Dan was rather excited for gamingmas before it started so idk lol

I kind of agree that the reason for Poptropica being recommended is younger fans requesting for nostalgia. However, my issue with this is that it’s not nostalgia for D&P. I mean Dan’s 26 and Phil’s 30 and like a lot of us on this site, it clearly wasn’t their childhood experiences. I think that’s what throws a lot of fans off vids like this. It just turns into two grown men playing a game they don’t really get and awkwardness ensues.whatdoiknow wrote: Sun Dec 03, 2017 11:05 pmI agree that they are looking at games people are requesting, and there seems to be some positive reaction. Nostalgia only really works if the gamer is sharing their experience with you, which is why games like Crash Bandicoot, Sonic Mania, Bubble Bobble, Katamari and Bishi Bashi all worked as videos. It’s why I kinda liked the not-a-game Pottermore quizzes, because we know Dan is a fan and grew up in the rise of Pottermania.
Maybe I’m just being too cynical though.
That video was pretty boring, although I did enjoy phil's newfound cheekiness a lot.
I think throwback games are generally boring to me, even if they like them. I know most people really liked the video where they played Sonic a few months ago, but that was super boring to me, despite the amount of innuendos in it. Same for Club Penguin. I was also mostly bored during Cuphead, which is a new game but with an old school vibe.
Crash Bandicoot is the only nostalgia game they played that I loved.
Also as iconic and fun the Golf With Friends videos are, I think they have run their course. It's probably pushing it having four videos of that already.. I don't think they should play another one.
I think there's a limit to playing the same video again and that's two or three times at the most.
I really don't know what they could play that would be interesting though. I know basically nothing about video games.
but if they're listening to people's suggestions, then where is our board game (besides truth bombs)??

For the love of god deppy, play some games you're actually interested in! At least moderately interested. The bants are good those alone do not make the most entertaining gaming video content imo. I'm too old to know about this game so it wasn't very interesting and they seemed to just not care about the game so they weren't very engaged with it (but why would they, it's made for children). I thought spooky week was pretty good this year but gamingmas is letting me down man. Really the only thing I took from this video is that I could try playing it with the kids I nanny on a particularly rainy boring day?
It's good they're listening to their audience about what they want to see but the customer doesn't always know best, you know? We're fans of what they do because most of us fell in love with the content they came up with when they were first deciding what things they wanted to put out, the "classics" so to speak. So I guess it'd be nice if they remembered to keep it in balance and that they ultimately know what their viewers will really like because they themselves actually like it. Like give the people what they want, sure, but make sure it's also what they want. idk, hope this ramble makes some sense.
