I knew what you meant! Sorry if I came across like I was being rude or offended, I just wanted to comment on Dan's insecurities without sounding like it was in regard to his weight. That doesn't really make sense but I don't know how to explain it lol. But again sorry if I came across like I was policing you, I got that you were saying it like he didn't grow into himself yet. Plus there's nothing wrong with not being super skinny!
Oh I see, got you :thumb: I agree with the last bit especially.

+1 for #TeamCat btw, she gets far too much backlash from the phandom over nothing imo.

I could see Youtube commissioning them to do something for YoutubeRed again.
i don't know how well they did but i'm going to guess their vids were among the most viewed.

Thanks for letting me know trinitypixi that actually makes a lot of sense wow I'm dumb. *slowly looks up video* (unless it's really cringe someone warn me please lol)

000dia000 I'm glad you also appreciate youtube's best kept secret ;)

Also I forget who said this but I never realized how being tall/built big would make you way more insecure about your weight because regardless of how skinny you are the number on the scale would just be larger. Also growing that much during adolescence would make your own perception of yourself obstructed even more than the average teen I'd imagine. Thanks for making me 5'3 parents!

Am I the only one who thinks Dan's gonna skip the live show bc of Cat drama? It's 10.30 in England now, and he hasn't tweeted anything about it. Has he ever been this late?

In regards to the conversation earlier about peoples' impressions of D+P:
When I first started watching D+P I loved their dynamic and was impressed by how funny they were. Then I started to like Dan a lot. 2 years later and I still definitely prefer Dan.

The first video I saw was a Dan video and I thought he was a wannabe emo and was boring so I didn't finish the video lol. Then I actually watched him and thought he was actually the funniest youtuber I've seen in a while. I remember being surprised Phil did youtube since one of the first Dan videos I saw was the prank one and Phil seemed like a normal quiet roommate. I watched his video and was like "Phil talks??" Then I realized he had more subscribers (at the time) and did youtube first and I was so surprised, but once I watched his videos I immediately knew why because his personality is gold. So I liked them both I guess and I still do. Before I slightly preferred Dan's videos but now I slightly prefer Phil's.

Phil is a happy stoner and talks about popular culture, animals and pancakes while Dan gets paranoia/goes too deep and starts making borderline concerning and bleak tweets?

darn I missed most of the conversation that's what I get for putting off grading final exams until the night before they're due so a bit off topic now sorry!
I love how phil-focused (phil-positive? i can't find the right words) idb has gotten lately, tumblr and twitter seems like they tend to still overlook phil unless it's in the context of #phan.

on objectification
since the convo included a bit of phil/dan comparisons, for some reason remembered an evan video I saw a few days ago. Should I use a trigger warning for luke? he warrants it imo
I've linked the video, but at the beginning Luke, Evan, and Lucy talk about first impressions of Deppy, and Luke is a bit gross about them their whole conversation is a really great example of how the youtube community treats Deppy individually. they all talk about phil positively (as positively as Luke can be), while dan is mentioned in context of his appearence--Lucy says her first impression of dan was as "the hot friend" of phil's.

(Interesting note: Lucy says "I found phil before I found dan," and evan's response is that's like saying "I found god before I found drugs." )

on phil
As someone who recently converted from a casual to, well, a more than casual fan, I think it's possible viewers (especially tween/teen viewers) have/had trouble identifying with his content---phil doesn't reveal a significant amount of personal information like most youtubers so it's harder to get invested in his life, which let's be real is the main reason people watch youtubers (Deppy is a anomaly).
Phil's subscribers/twitter followers have been growing rapidly, and it's a rather recent phenomena. At least from how I'm seeing it, now that he and dan are more open about their relationship (platonic or otherwise) it's easier for viewers to get invested in his content, because now Dan is his personal life...the interactions between phil and dan are primary sources as a window into Phil's life. It's easier for viewers to get invested in him because he feels more "human." Other youtubers speak positively about phil often, and outside their peers it seems phil is "on the radar," just look at the recent tomska vlog (i'm so sorry I can't find the exact one) where he went to the creators summit (i think it was that?). the convention/seminar speaker uses phil's videos as the example of a successful intro. ANYWAY sorry, the point is I think people seem to underestimate phil's popularity and esteem? while yes, phil isn't usually seen as "hot" on initial viewing (which like, what??), I don't see that signifigantly hurting his viewership, at least in the past year or two. Does anyone else think that or am I just way off base?

on dan and phil
I'm not complaining, but I think it's kind of interesting how the topic of dan's objectification/sexualization quickly prompted a conversation affirming phil's attractiveness? it feels a bit like, idk, taking how dan is discredited by the way people objectify him and using it to point out how phil's looks don't positively effect him enough? ugh I don't know how to say what's I'm trying to say.
I'm mainly phil-centric, but I've just been so interested by dan lately b/c it seems like a lot of the time dan's mentioned in a lightly negative light (I'm not saying in an extreme way) in order to reaffirm phil in a positive way. or maybe those two things are not connected and just happening individually, im not sure. don't get me wrong, I'm not saying "we have to like both equally!!!11!," and I'm literally ALL HERE for #attractive phil talk, but I just feel like something's changed about how dan is treated in a way I don't quite understand.

I'M SORRY THIS IS SO LONG WHY DO I DO THIS. I swear I won't be this annoying anymore.
However, most importantly ... PHIL'S NEW HEADER IS AWESOME FFS

after reading all of the discussion i think in general the talk about objectification and about attractiveness should be kept as separate as possible. attractiveness is something widely subjective and i'm not sure how strong the connection between attractiveness and objectification actually is. i think it's tempting to respond to "why is dan treated differently by parts of his audience with regards to that" by saying "phil is just as attractive", but i think this is replying to a different conversation, as otherwise it'd be implying that objectification is somehow desirable. (which is in fact something that happens, for example imagine thinking "why did my friend get catcalled and not me" and jumping to the conclusion that it's because your own unattractiveness. it's definitely something i've caught myself thinking, so the point i'm trying to make is, it's not unnatural to mix these up and one of the things people have to actively unlearn.) (post tangent) i'm also not sure if dan's "early internet history" ties into this discussion -- i think it's also somewhat delicate to say because it's difficult to steer it completely clear of any narrative that assigns the fault of being objectified back to himself. (not saying that this is what you meant, alittledizzy, i'm just realizing that it's difficult as i'm writing this!) if we're trying -- phil used to be pretty flirty as well, so what exactly would it be that would spark such a difference in how they're treated? (it all probably ties back to people perceiving dan as more feminine, as many of you said, so i'm just going to stop here and be angry by myself.)

re: #headerforphil i'm really happy and looking forward to the headers. i didn't check twitter, but i also hope cat didn't get rude replies to her tweet -- it's making me cringe a lot whenever parts of the phandom see it as their duty to reply rudely to every attempt at communication.

slightly ot at this point but i felt like confirming this -- i've been insecure about my build since i was 12, simply because i felt like i was taking up too much space, needing bigger clothes than everyone else, looked weird in photos due to unflattering angles and didn't in general know where to put my noodle-y limbs.

sorry if this post is a bit (?) jumbled, it's 2 a.m. in my time zone and i should probably sleep.

where to start off.. theres so much to comment on.

Attractiveness Let me first start off by saying all this calling people "ugly" makes me uncomfortable because it forces me to confront the superficiality in society. A person's interpretation of beauty is subjective and builds from getting to know a person. Therefore the word ugly shouldn't exist in my book. Unfortunately it does to a majority of people and it's something that is either celebrated or used against. One of the things that bothered me when I first joined the phandom was the comparisons of looks between the boys. To me it didnt matter how they looked it was about their content and which one of them really captured me. The beauty came later. So I always sat there contemplating why so much emphasis and spite was directed at Dan for being the "more attractive one" and why people felt "sorry" and had to emphasize Phil beauty posts to ease guilt and all. Both are at a disadvantage the way I see it, Dan beauty being overemphasized and defining him and phils beauty being either ignored or overemphasized. Why should this be the case and why the fuck should how they look like matter?? I can imagine people feeling bad about Dan or Phil reading comments but bringing it up only makes it worse and I doubt those two lovebirds give a fuck who thinks theyre more attractive

My personal thoughts:

If we are talking about which of the two is conventionally attractive Id say neither. They are not buff, have cutting jawlines or any of the other feature emphasized in Armani ads. I never liked them initially because I thought they were attractive. If I wanted that I would go drool over abs Id bore over Marcus Butler. Attractiveness is not enough to keep a person interested. For me it was their personalities. Phil's at first really caught me and has kept me for a long ass time. I find him gorgeous and can write paragraphs about how beautiful and ethereal he is (trust me Im crazy about his features) because I love him as a person (or atleast the person he portrays online). Dan as well was another (bratty) guy with a fringe, but his personality makes him more attractive. They are very attractive to me now because Im attached to the people they are and love them for it. If one of our human flaws is our initial superficiality, our ability to find the beauty in someone after getting to know them is a saving grace. Hearing all your stories about finding them more attractive as times goes on shows me that.

At the end of the day, yes some of Dan's fame was because he was a pretty face (same with bore asses like Alfie and Marcus who have 5 million subs), but for the most part its because people are invested in the person inside. Dan for many is a riveting and complex person who is likavble for who he is, his dimples and cute upturned nose are just additional attributes to why people like and follow Dan. He is also as many said, more relatable to an audience therefore why his videos get more attention. Phil and his beautifully obscure head, skinny knobby shoulders and crooked smile is more unique and takes some time to open up and see his quirky almost subtle humor. He's almost alien-like in that he is someone you look twice at and begin to admire the differences and unique qualities he has. I've seen people fall hard for Phil after realizing he's not just the conventional "nice guy" but also a little devious and messy. With opening up more with the audience I hope to see the gap between them lessen and see appreciation on both ends for the people they are and the content they create rather then the vessels of a body theyre given :thumb:

sexualization: While I disagree with the sexualization of Dan, at one point at least, it was his doing. The whole DINOF brand is sexual, and Dan himself openly sexualized himself initially '(naked dailybooth) and for a couple of years with his "sexy endscreen dance" and aggressive lip bites. He did use his body and face to garner and audience so I cant fault it all on fangirls blindly sexualizing their stan (atleast initially). Seeing it continue when Dan for the most part has not encouraged it is the uncomfortable thing. I think between the two of them Dan is easier to sexualize because he is younger and has a easy banter with audience wheras Phil interacts directly with audience when its to lightly tell us off for misbehaving. Phil is the father to the phandom while Dan is the "hot friend". In terms of sexualization with yt peers, again Dan is the younger one wheras Phil is given alot of respect. There is contact with all the ytbers and Phil, wheras with Dan, he is known as the "hot guy" and branded as that so it's easier for ytbers to separate him as a person and feel comfortable making those comments when it's already part of his branding.

is there an instance where his weight was ever an insecurity to him? i mean im sure he mentioned it like quite a way back but i dont remember on what platform or what he said but i dont remember. i feel like im going crazy, i swear ive seen something mentioned before. (which is sad to think of, dan you are a wonderful human being regardless)

god i cant articulate today. back to uni has messed me up lol
Dan has always made fun of/commented on his weight, calling himself "fat", "quite fat", etc. I think he feels that way from when he was a tween and he was apparently a bit tubby, especially since he lost interest in sports. He said that the weight just "stretched upwards" rather than him losing it. I think he's just not really lost that feeling, I mean he's clearly not overweight even at his "softest", but I think he got the whole "pounds/kilos mean everything" mentality that can make you feel like shit. He's a tall dude and the number on the scale is not reflective of your worth but maybe he felt that way in the past and felt bad for it so decided to mock himself in self-defence
adding to what melon said, he has tweeted that he has wanted to skip meals and he talked about dieting in at least one video. I believe the video was about new years resolutions?
I dont know if hes still insecure about it, but to me it seems like his insecurities nowadays are pointed more towards his work and creative integrity. He worries about what he's putting out into the world. It hurts me to wonder whether he is still insecure about his weight, but it's a subject I can't dwell on for too long because he isn't as vocal about it anymore.

I agree that Phil is becoming more open when on camera with Dan, but I think in terms of his videos by himself he has always seemed confident and more sure of himself, because he knows he can edit out parts he doesnt like and he has complete control. His videos of just him alone (sleepless nights with phil, quiz video etc.) seem to me like the same energetic style of videos with little personal opinions shared.
That being said, he has made a lot more videos with Dan recently, and in those he's forced to bounce off of Dan and sometimes forced to open up a little on camera with less control. He's especially comfortable about it recently, which goes back to your point about it earning him more subscribers/followers.
(Tl;dr i agree with you lol)

Im happy that #headerforphil is finally a thing! people are so goddamn quick with their amazing art. Phil must be really excited! Im happy that the boys appreciate their fanart, and I was sad that drawphilnaked stopped for that reason... this seems like an adequate replacement.

I think it was a flop because people were there for Dan and Phil who simply were not on. You can't convince me the request show coasted only on being the request show. Them opening the doors was a part of a conscious effort on BBC's side to make Radio One popular with the 14-18 and 18-24 demo. That's the reason why you now have Nick Grimshaw in the mornings rather than Chris Moyles, even if the latter pulled better numbers - Nick performs better in the target demo. So since Dan and Phil consistently, by themselves pull nice numbers and simply don't deliver when paired with others, it would make sense for the Beebs to try and get them back to their original set up rather than bet on wildcards who don't come with built in audience.

I know all that, what I was saying that in the previous show D&P only created a format around the already existing request show so they had a solid base to work with. With The Internet Takeover they had no base, they created the entire concept of a show for the first time making any success or failure their direct responsibility than when they were just hosts with some original segments. And it probably didn't work out as well as D&P and the BBC had hoped. I also imagine that the show was expensive to make. It was filmed, internationally streamed, all episodes except D&P's had to be pre-recorded and some of the more famous hosts like Zoella, Tyler, Felix etc. probably asked for a good sum of money to appear. All of that can't have reflected well on D&P, no matter how much BBCR1 does love them and the audience they pull in. I also wonder how much impact the phandom actually had on R1's demographic. Teens flocking to R1 for one or two hours a week/month is great, but if they never stick with the station after it's over and don't tune in any other time it might not be worth it.

Because they did initially talk about only a hiatus and didn't start pulling strange faces at mention of the show until summer, I suspect that between that time their contracts were up and that negotiations didn't go well so ultimately they parted ways. That would make a regular show impossible, but they did specials before they had a regular show and contract so I really do hope it is not the end of their radio days. It's still my second favorite thing they've done, right behind DAPG

It's still my second favorite thing they've done, right behind DAPG :D
