He may or may not be 100% accurate, sure, but a) I don't think many of us here have a PhD in social justice / history / the absolute truth and rightfulness in our twenties, and b) the complete opposite, which is him not saying anything at all, would be unbearably self absorbed.
Sis, don't try it with these hyperbolic, absolute extremes lmaooo. Who is asking for a PhD? Who is asking for 100% accuracy? Is the complete opposite the only other option to you?

I'm simply pointing out that he has a tendency to make soundbite statements that aren't entirely correct, but also saying in a tone that I interpret as quite absolute... not authoritative, but absolute... in that same tone that many have said can come off as pretentious. And you know what he has that many of us actually don't? An expansive, public platform. So maybe you should see an issue with him spreading inaccuracies to an audience of thousands to millions.Personally, I just think it's annoying.
But tbh, he coulda kept that BLM Younow blurb. I don't have a PhD, but I am black af, and his BLM explanation was too sanitized and whitesplainy for me personally. Was it completely wrong? No. Did I expect him to explain it from an expert's perspective? Of course not. But these are opportunities for him to direct people to voices that can maybe explain it better than him, because that's also an option. (And I think he's done that in the past, so g4h. I recognize that he makes efforts to educate himself, so that's not even what any of this is about).

Manged can I ask what was wrong with his BLM explanation? I didn't think it was great but I also didn't think it was offensive. I thought where he went wrong was supposing that all people who say #ALM have just misunderstood BLM. There's of course s deeper conflict concerning privilege

Damn IDB seems dead as hell. Somebody bring up more topics!

It's weird because when they were actually on tour in the US I think we had more things to talk about...be it fan encounters, tatinof things, complaining or rehashing old topics (which people are scared/intimidated to do because other people complain about it sometimes).

Anyway, the react video was pretty meh for me. Glad D+P seemed to get more screen time this time though.

D+P are going to Australia next week so we'll likely only get the undertale video next week and Dan's liveshow (unless Phil posts a video too).

Both those were total jokes tho, weren't they? As in he wasn't in any way serious and I don't get why everyone seems to think that he was.

You can tell by his tone, or just generally by how absurd those statements are. Way I see it he's being knowingly ridiculous, in order to low-key make fun of the kind of people who are quick to yell "cultural appropriation!!!" even in cases when it isn't really applicable (few punks or lads cry themselves to sleep over other people trying out their style; lad appropriation is not a thing).
Yeah no you're completely right, I didn't mean to imply he did it seriously. I /do/ think the kid engages in some serious arse-covering though. When he says stuff like that, I feel like he makes it clear (like you say, through his tone) he knows he's being kind of absurd, but at the same time he still says it just to cover himself. I suppose I'm referring more to the punk edits than the lad vid here.

I think it might actually stem from what manged is saying - he doesn't fully understand the topic. So if he thinks it /might/ be dodgy he'll give it a jokey caveat. Its a common trick for him.

Anyway I just meant to say that for someone who's at least pretty socially conscious (if not totally clued up) its unusual for him to make a joke out of something other people take seriously and enjoy. Maybe its more appropriate to liken it to how he talks about other fandoms and not to shit on them, their ships, their droughts etc. Making a running joke about being a furry cos it would be lolsofunnyandquirky just seems pretty dry by his usual standards.

Reacts vid - kind of blah, but that's par for the course on that channel these days.
I wonder how biology can explain the physical pain you feel in your chest when all you want to do is talk shit on IDB

I mean yeah basically. He left it off at people missing the implicit "too", didn't he? I'd say that's the case for many who use ALM, but ALM is also used to silence the BLM movement. And the fact that there needs to be an implicit "too" for many people to understand it, because they can't simply stand for black lives is an issue in itself, but I won't place that on Dan.

Was very amused by them both waving their arms around in the 'no one thought it would happen' Brexit part though, just hoping they might get more political in the extras? Probs not though lets be real..

The Youtubers React was alright, at 5:50 I thought Phil looked on the edge of saying something but it wasn't put in. I could have done with Dan shutting up and looking intently at Phil to see if he would 'express an opinion.' But then Dan has always appeared to be the spokesperson whenever they're being interviewed together. I would love to see Phil really speak his mind during an interview soon.

There were moments when Phil clearly wanted to intervene but it got cut off the video / by Dan (05:51 onwards, also kind of 06:22 onwards), so I wouldn't say he entirely wanted to stay out of the politics topic. It's just that Brexit is a sensitive topic for him (maybe he voted leave?).

I truly have no opinions about that Trump video, I don't really get it tbh. I kinda agree with Dan and Oli that it might have no stan at all and just for gags but maybe that is because I don't get the vid. So

Point for Brexit mention.

FBE cutting the video when Phil is starting to say something makes me a bit angry. give us those opinionated Phil, please, there's too little of it!!!

Haha yeah true, boy's got a very strange mix of no opinions/actually lots of opinions but hurriedly explained with a thousand disclaimers to cover that bootay. I guess he's learnt to be vague on purpose, always giving the viewer the choice to think of what he said as a joke even when it might not actually be.

I never really thought about it before you said it but it IS kind of weird for Dan to have made furries into a "thing" now - it's not something he does to any other groups of people, that I can think of. And as of late, I've got a bunch of them feeling hopeful in my comment section:

It's always the thing with Dan, isn't it? Same shit happened when Caitlyn Jenner came out as transgender and her trash ex-son in law (or something like that) misgendered her on purpose and Dan said in a ls that the guy probably didn't mean anything bad, but since he knew her as a man, he just had trouble adapting to the new situation. Like, um, yeah sure Dan,whatever you say.
I can't tell if that's Dan being too scared of giving a firm opinion and thus staying on middle ground as a safety measure or how he actually is,which if that's the case, makes me like him less.

As someone who claims to love reflecting about the meaning of the universe and humanity he has to know that some peope are just vicious. It's not about misunderstanding, it's about hate and self-entitlement as priviledged members of society. There is no need to always play devil's advocate because that's not a good look. I'd honestly prefered if, just like Phil, he'd abstain of giving his opinion if it's only ever half-assed.

The thing is, because Dan is just that bit more open about his opinions than Phil, as a fandom we expect him to speak his mind on a huge range of topics. He must feel an enormous amount of pressure to say the 'right thing' but also offer an educated opinion. So really, can you blame him for wanting to stay on some sort of middle ground? Giving any sort of strong opinion means thousands of fans jumping down his throat, and that would terrify me if I were him. He has a huge influence on his audience and I'm sure he's well aware of that; as a result, he must be wary of being opinionated publicly. Playing it safe when it comes to politics and society is probably a smart move for his career, and he knows that people would hold a 'wrong' opinion against him.
