As I understand, it roughly means the same as LeftTube, the name comes from the book "The Conquest of Bread", an anarcho-communist text by Peter Kropotkin.
Definitely the big ones are ContraPoints, Philosophy Tube, Hbomberguy, Shaun, but I've also seen smaller creators who make political/lgbt/generally progressive stuff be referred to as BreadTubers. I guess it happens to be mostly LGBTQ+.

I don't think it's a great fit for Dan, tbh. It's true that Natalie and Olly, for example, have an academic philosophy background that he doesn't have, but that's not why I'm saying this. Dan definitely has a sharp enough mind to take on heavy topics. But the grind of banging out a half-hour video every month (which is probably required for the nuance these topics need) is probably not his thing. Dan is a storyteller, an observer of the world (I think he did an excellent job of analysing meme culture from within, early on before the mainstream media got around to), and the reason BIG worked so well was because it was his story.
Also, the BreadTubers I mentioned have arrived (maybe through trial and error) at a good balance of irony and sincerity that works for them. With Dan, that might take some more work: BIG was one thing, but with his earlier semi-serious videos like The Memeing of Life and TTLMT, I don't think he was happy with that balance either, or how it came across.

Dan’s not gonna breadtube. While he’s generally on the left, he’s certainly quite “problematic” - it’s very hard for satire to work into that sort of realm. Plus, he is WAY too much into Camus and that philosopher is not exactly popular amongst the left set.

I’m curious about the writing camp he did some months ago. It would be incredible if that had nothing to do with his current project.

For a while I thought he might be heading that way, but as people have said, pumping out such a researched and produced video monthly would stress him to infinity (well, guessing, but still), not to mention the scrutiny of the audience.

I managed to shake off the sads, thankfully, and get back to a chilled, understanding state. Was really hard to shake for a while, though. Also, he answered my questions so I bought his candle (though my bank account needed it a lot more than his probably does) and I’m intrigued what the heck spices, amber and wood smell like. I didn’t know amber had a scent.

Being very northern, my first thought just now was ambergris. And since I just had to picture the smell of that candle, I thought I'd share it and make others suffer with me. :?

I'd say a lot of breadtubers are more problematic than Dan these days which is also why I hope he's not going to try to break into that field right now or ever. It's not really a good time for the format.

I had never heard of ambergris, but now that I have... wow. I can just imagine it.

I also ordered the candle, but I haven’t been notified it has shipped yet. Here’s some interesting info I found on amber in candles.

Ooh, that is interesting, particularly the things it can help with. I’m glad there’s more out there than lavender (well, that’s for stress so not quite the same), cos that works, but I don’t really like it.

I've had a fun week celebrating my brother's birthday with my parents in London, I even walked 16,000 steps in one day. That may be a personal life record! When it's my birthday I plan on doing 0 steps just so the universe gets its balance back.

I'm doing a live show in 3 HOURS, and I wanted to talk about excuses, specifically ones you have given that sound too fake but are actually true! Have you ever given a fake sounding but actually REAL excuse? What were you getting out of?

Let me know and you might be in the show!

Hope you're all having a swell Sunday

I'm living for Phil talking about his hair color on the livestream. He said that he's not ruled out going back to black but he just wanted to stop dyeing it for a bit and see, and when chat started expressing opinions he did a bit of that cute Phil snark and said, (paraphrasing) "I'll do what I want!"

I am intrigued by Phil saying he would paint his nails with Dan’s polish if he had some. I’m guessing that was just rhetoric as he said back in 2017 he didn’t like how nail polish felt. I remember in a joint liveshow Dan found that quite funny. He’s such a good business partner promoting Dan’s merch.

I’m surprised Phil didn’t know more about MCR. Is it mostly Dan that’s the MCR fanboy?

Phil does such lovely relaxing liveshows... even when playing horror games,

I enjoyed the live show although I prefer last weeks game it had me more engaged. Bless Phil for promoting Dan's merch (literally the only positive thing I'll say about the merch drop) Him describing the smell being a very Dan smell, musky in a good way.

Phil is a good partner and that's all I'll say on that.

Fun liveshow! That game was like a mix of Ori and the Blind Forest and Little Nightmares- creepy and atmospheric. Could have done without the nasty spider though. Bleh

I sent him that premium message asking if the brown hair was here to stay and I love that he said that. I’d miss the brown since I’m totally attached but it’s Phil’s world and we’re just living in it

Loved the liveshow. I guess I just love seeing Phil have fun and be in his element like this.

I'm still laughing over him giggling after his pogo stick story about "bouncing on his stick". I love that part is Phil so much.

I like both so I’m happy either way, but it’ll certainly be interesting to see his full proper natural hair colour if he lets it grow entirely out! It’s probably a good idea to give it a break from dyeing for a bit after all these years anyway, but if he wants to go back to black then good for him, it always looked lovely too.

Great liveshow! Can’t believe he tried on the hoodie and didn’t take a pic, smh. I was thinking beforehand about what a shame it was Dan’s candle wasn’t out before Phil did his candle haul, and then he did an unboxing for us, yay. I enjoyed the game too, even if it was slightly creepier than I expected!

I think the brown hair looks really good on him- it warms his skin tone and makes him look soft and cuddly. It'll be interesting to see if he goes back to a darker color.

Phil is indeed a great partner, but he's also so fucking funny and I love watching him enjoying these liveshows. He isn't giving us much of his life but he still manages to feel engaging and I just appreciate him so much, he must be such a good friend to have god

I don't have a preference between Brown and black hair he's gorgeous anyway

Just popping in to say that I'm loving all the Phil love of late, partly because he's always been my favourite of the two (sorry, Dan - I love you too :love1: ). It's just nice to see, because sometimes I feel like so many people in the Phandom have a preference for Dan and enjoy watching him more. Perhaps I am biased and just notice the love for Dan more, though. Regardless, It's just nice to see all the appreciation and celebration of Phil.

I've not watched the Phil liveshow yet. Thought it was on at 9pm. By the time I realised it was too late. I'll just have to wait until it's up on YouTube. Looking forward to it. I always enjoy them.

And it would be nice if Dan started doing liveshows again, but if he doesn't want to then that's fair enough for me. I don't get pleasure out of watching him do something he doesn't want to. Strange, because I always thought he quite liked doing them. Perhaps he is just taking a break and will go back to them at some point. Who knows? We'll just have to wait and see, I suppose.

Been watching rose and rosie since watching their liveshow today :O I love them, they remind me so much of Dan and Phil, with Rose being the Sarcy one like Dan :') I dont feel as sad about Dan now to be honest, it is his loss and people are bound to get fed up and move on in time so it's up to him, I'm done. Unless Dan actually explains himself and I feel it is sincere I will still watch Phil as he is so funny and making the effort. Loved today's liveshow, I just dont think that Dan deserved his spon.

I think that is genuinely one of Phil's talents and it comes across in his videos too. It is one of the reasons I've always enjoyed his content so much.

Yeah, I always find his liveshows and his content very relaxing. He has a way of being so...comforting. I don't know how else to explain it, but I get this warm/safe feeling when I watch them. Kind of weird, I know.
