Well, since fans caught Phil supposedly wearing a necklace the last time, they decided it will be a better idea to let Daniel wear it since they know Phil's neck will be under scrutiny. Months passed, and Daniel grew more comfortable holding the necklace and Phil never ask for it back. And yesterday, it makes its return.

When talking about dropping so much dinof stuff he's focusing more on peripherals like maltesers/delia smith/etc, basically just things that haven't actively been part of his 'brand' anyway for a while now. But along with all of that, I wonder how much of the cynicism and 'darkness' he's stopped identifying with as well. Wholesome Howell has been dropping those seeds for a few months too but more so on other channels (to be fair, there's not a huge sample size of vids on dinof to compare 'lately'...). Now I'm even more curious how he'll approach his own channel after this point.

Maybe the (tbh very few) mentions of 'edgy straight bros' and their expectations of his content was a way of voicing his anxiousness over dropping a bit of the dinof persona (because 'edgy straight bros' are into 'edgy shit' ie. potentially his less-PC earlier content) and losing viewers in general with any change at all was his actual concern. Like maybe analytics shows him his older videos with offensive jokes get more rewatches or something and he was/is struggling with knowing what's more successful and what people want vs. what he's actually comfortable with or interested in doing now. But even if they're not the edgy straight bros Dan's mentioned (because, you know, they mainly live in his mind), there's still a good chunk of people who want to see that dinof (and maybe dropping the name altogether makes it easier to stop worrying about having to be consistent with their, or anybody's, expectations).

I mean, he'll always be a sarcastic little shit, but he's definitely softened the ways he expresses it (most clearly seen in the evolution of ISG where it is actually just about giving genuine advice now, which yeah, is pretty bland in practice). Interesting! I know he made a point of saying his content won't change, but his content has been changing and it's been in some weird limbo for a couple of years of not knowing what it wants to be. Now we're maybe at the point where it needs to (and can!) pick a direction (unless of course the Feb thing is a new giant project that will throw a fork in it all again for another few years and the Frustration will be Real, but let's not worry about that just yet ).

I think this is fine. Dan said both in his video and in his liveshow yesterday that it really isn't that big of a deal. And in the liveshow that people were almost being too supportive.

Plus I think if anything, PJ and Felix were picking on the people who made this a huge deal, ie fans. "Respect my decision" and "making the leap" do not really follow along the lines of anything Dan has said about his own name change. But idk, we could all assume that Dan's friends are dragging him. So, upon reading fancybum's notes on the ls (always spot on, thank you a million times for the Phil watch and the transcripts ), I was again thinking about Dan's responds (or "responds") to comments from people with typical male names in his ls and how a lot of people don't like it because the general opinion is that they are not from the chat, he invents them to introduce a new topic and he doesn't have that much male viewers anyway. I don't watch the ls on younow if I can help it (but I did before), so I can't see the chat obviously, and we all know that Dan has a list of topics prepared for his ls, he's told us that himself. But it is also obvious to me that he has a broad understanding of his audience, broader than some members of the phandom have, because he reads the youtube comments under his videos (I'm so sorry for him, honestly, I know it's his job and he must be desensitised now, but people are awful) and he sees the reactions of different fractions of his audience on different social media, not just of the most committed part of the phandom (but it's also true that those committed fans are the ones who are responsible for his financial stability because they're the ones who buy merch, coincidentally they are most likely to be teenage girls, doesn't matter if we're talking about his audience in general).

What I don't really understand is why people so easily say that he's lying all the time? I get that he doesn't tell the whole truth in his (or Phil's) main channel videos, it's a performance after all. I get that they both are very private and evade questions about relationships and the like. They did flat out lie in the past, but it's in the past and it's about their relationship, I don't care what they say about that as long as they're comfortable, it's a process. And in Dan's case is particular, I don't see why he would lie about something that isn't a private matter, he's ranting all the time about different things. I'm always operating on an assumption that he's telling the truth, only when it doesn't make any sense that I will consider if it's a lie. So, for example, what really made me write this post is that I saw a guy in the comments under TomSka's last vlog:

"Yes Andrew, thank you Andrew" when he doesn't for others, in order to emphasize them. And hey, we know even from this little sandbox of the internet that he's definitely got guys watching too, it's not improbable at all. Just as a disclaimer, I'm not even annoyed anymore about him doing that, whatever makes him more comfortable, so my notes are just me having fun with it, they're not a criticism.

I think he uses those names either in place of actual names or just for invented questions altogether and does so to better represent his viewers (because for sure there's guys watching, but they probably have non gender specific usernames like everyone else in the chat and they're in the minority to begin with, so this is Dan's way of acknowledging them but also bringing attention to them to prove he has male viewers which is where the eye rolling can come in, that he feels that necessary to do, but then again maybe it is necessary, who am I to say).

To be clear, while I appreciated your entire post and agree with quite a few points, my point was a bit different. If anything, I prefer wholesome Howell to bring existential crisis branding.

I never quite cared for Dan as a content creator (soz mate), rather for his marketing, persona and audience manipulation in connection with his #platonicbestie. Of course, I will eagerly watch the actual rebranding process. And of course, I still have Mr Lester, whose branding commitment is monumental

But really, who knows how close they were/are besides them. All i remember is Dan saying they talk to Marzia about horror movies, that's it.

I feel like Felix, along with most of the other youtuber sphere, fall into the circle of friendly acquaintances and not actually friends. Maybe they have more chemistry with some than others (like Louise) so it's easier to project friendship, maybe they have more a familiar history with some than others (like PJ and Sophie) so it's easier to project a continued closeness. But ultimately they'll hang out a couple times a year at most and video filming with be involved, and then not outwardly interact much in the in-between times or seem super up to date on each other's lives outside of what goes on twitter. Friendly, but not close friends.

And that opinion makes me side eye PJ and Felix for the tweets. I think it would be different if they were actually directed at Dan, but the way it's done there comes off as passive-aggressive subtweeting. Not actually malicious but not quite friendly either, like whispering something about someone loudly enough that you know they can hear but still not saying it to them.

I've always interpreted those sort of comments from Dan as inclusive, both coming from a genuine desire to represent gender beyond the binary as well as a (relatively newfound) awareness of sensitivity re: gender (particularly, I think, a wariness with regards to language that could potentially be interpreted as misogynistic). I still genuinely believe that's where Dan's coming from, but it's so interesting (and frightening tbh) to me that those comments can be interpreted in exactly the opposite way, so much so that the viewer pins Dan down as conservative regarding sexuality/gender, when (perhaps naively of me) I think Dan's genuinely making an effort to be the opposite.

re: tweets from Felix and Pj - I think I sit somewhere in the middle of the opinions that have been expressed here. On the one hand, I don't think it's a huge deal and I doubt Dan would want people to be offended by it since he considers himself friends with both of them (he did like PJ's tweet as well), but on the other hand the tweets didn't completely sit right with me. They did come across a bit mocking, and whether that was of the fans who made it out to be a bigger deal than it was or of Dan himself I'm not sure, but I do agree with dizzy in a way that it does come across a bit shady or passive-aggressive.

Regarding the tweets: When i first saw them I immediately thought: throwing shade at the phandom. Which I don't blame them for, some people really reacted to it like it was this massive, huge thing when in reality it wasn't much of a big deal. (Although still exciting, but there was definitely over-reactions. Not on here, more on tumblr/twitter. Also the chat yesterday was ridiculous.)

I can see how it would seem like shade towards Dan, but we've seen many times interactions between PJ and Dan and Felix and Dan, I feel like they probably wouldn't go that low as to subtly (or not) throw shade at him. Probably just messing around and taking the piss a little. I find it quite funny personally, it's just #bantz at the end of the day. (I can see why people would feel a bit iffy about it, it does look like they're really taking the piss, but I see it as more of a reaction to the phandom's reaction to Dan rebranding, and making it a big deal when it's not.)

To be fair, that person was probably baiting the phandom but people do interpret things they way they want.
When tomska made a pro-lgbt video, with his usual humor, he received a lot of backlash from a part of his audience who probably assumed he wasn't an ally(or cared about such things).

So, here is the return of my review/summary of liveshow thing that I used to do last year (wow, 2016 was mad) but become gradually lazier as people post faster than me because timezones and by the time I want to write something, it feels irrelevant.

About the pigeon story, I agree with someone who post (or was this mention in a groupchat, I can't remember) that Phil is seemingly showing a dad vibe where he can be lazy in his garden and feed his pigeon, and work on his garden, planting little things. He is really that kind of person who wants to be with the nature. And honestly, it was kinda cute. probably why he falls in love with him. Daniel mention that Phil throws the seeds at the pigeon when he panics, which reminded me of that scene in DayInTheLife Australia where Phil panickly (is this a word) throw the feeds at the kasawari to prevent it from following him

I also like all the parts in the liveshow where the chat went PHIL AND I It makes him giggle a lot and I like seeing him happy like that


About Videos
When chat were asking if PINOF going to change with this rebranding, Daniel put his fisted hand over his chest and says 'I love that people are actually concern about this' and have a small laugh. This moment is so cute it makes me go awww.

Phil and Daniel are going to Florida soon so they already have DAPG videos recorded, which is good. I really like this new productive 2017 in contrast of 2016 deppy who left us in the dust last year during tatinof usa. My horse prince video is one of those that are coming soon, which if I am honest, not one that I actually looking forward to. Dil video is also coming, which is what I am always excited for. I don't know why, but there is only one time the Dil video ever let me down, which is the episode where they go to the pancakes house and destroy everything, so I am looking forward to what may come. At this point, I actually want to see Dil being pregnant of alien baby. Let the mpreg fic come alive deps.

About The New Place
"We could not have pick the worse time to go to Australia" (for context, he is saying the move and Australia happened at the same time). I call bullshit on this because unless they recently got evicted or the gas leak problem is bigger than we thought that they have to move at the drop of the hat, they should have been planning this for quite awhile. They should have known they are going to Australia. It was a calculated move to move when they are not in the country to prevent people who casually walking down their street to accidentally meet them hang around there during the period of moving.

Love the pretentious white piano. Looks lovely. I love that Daniel grace us with one of his piano playing It has been forever. People comments that he plays some Yuri On Ice theme, which I of course, hadn't watch yet (and probably never will during this time where everyone is crazy about it because I don't want a backlash in case I don't like it) As a person who knows nothing about piano playing, that sounds lovely and the hand jumping he did looks like what a level 8 in piano lessons, but as I already say, I don't know anything about piano playing whatsoever.

The upstairs lounge looks spacey and cozy so far. Things we know so far is in their upstairs lounge includes guitar hero guitars, rockband drum kits, a shelf, a TV from the old place (it was from their old living room or Phil's room?), a piano, a sofa and the floof thing and a terrarium that he hasn't smashed yet. Daniel also implies that there is a tv in the downstairs lounge too (where Phil can play his game while Daniel play his and nobody hoards the tv), so I guess the new place is really massive. I wonder how much are they paying for a month because damn.

Daniel bought a bonsai and a new lamp for his new dinof background, and then proceed to say 'maybe this could be the new background'. Bish, stop restricting us. Music talk Music talk is easily my least favourite part of Daniel's liveshow and I either tune him out or fall asleep during this part, mostly due to the fact that my taste in music is very shallow and the only thing I listen to is pop catchy music (there are reasons why they are popular) and power ballads. I have no idea who this Gorillaz is but if there are some pop catchy music in the new album somewhere, I might drop by and have a listen.

Rebranding has been in his mind for quite awhile. This doesn't surprise me since TATINOF, TABINOF and indirectly, DAPGO is a celebration of their legacy. Or as the proverb says, the end of an era. What I am a bit surprise or more precisely, intrigued of is what happen during that week in March (that we are supposed to ask about in August, I do have the alarm) that makes him chicken out. It was so bizzarre and out of the blue. What is going on? I don't want to say wedding jitters but well But I am no demon , maybe the supposed house they are about to move to suddenly have pipe leaks or something and they need to find a new house fast.

Opinion
I understand Daniel's struggle with dinof. He used to watch youtube before he makes his own videos. To paraphrase him himself, he watch all these videos and have a thought that he can do better than most of the people he watched. He had all this ideas planned and he trust himself to produce this top notch videos according to the mindset he first set when he started making videos. He make it a point to himself that he can do better than other youtubers, therefore he has this ego (I'm not sure if this is the right word) that he won't stoop low to make tag videos that his mind deems common. He want to continually impress people with every single one of his videos, with each of them meeting this threshold in his mind (like hitting 2M views idk) every single time. It is very stressful to work in that condition but he can't help it. I can't articulate this properly but what I am trying to say is he pressures himself into producing videos that was up to a standard that he set himself and unless he make peace with his mindset, it will always be like this. I wish him the very best of luck in his struggle and am looking forward to new dinof content in this post Daniel universe.

So if you know who you are on the inside, and that is who you are on the outside, that's when you feel at ease

Something I forgot to say and can't edit my post: It did come across as a joke (to me) but they probably shouldn't have got involved regardless. It is just asking for replies and comments and tweets back from the phandom. They probably wanted to rile them up a bit, but that's not a good way of going about it. Just like with Jack Howard's tweet to Dan, it's not needed but they did it anyway, to get some sort of reaction or to kind of show the phandom that they over-reacted or whatever. I don't know, it seemed lighthearted to me but thinking about it, they could of easily said nothing.

That's what I respect about Dan and Phil, they stay out of drama (or have recently/as long as I've been following them, not sure about the 2015 and beyond that) and I admire that. (Obviously there are things to not keep quiet about, but y'know what I mean.)

Forever love to everyone doing summary/discussion posts - especially fancybum for the name watches. Possibly the best part of solo liveshows coming back.

I dumped my timestamps over in the timestamp thread since it was nothing new and I'm not going to have time to sit down and rewatch it to do in depth/funny ones anyway.

My biggest takeaways from the liveshow are a) similar to everyone else, Dan is happy and I enjoy that, b) I want to know what the project was, and c) what happened in March?

(One theory: they were trying to buy a house, but something fell through. They still wanted to move asap so they found a place to rent instead.)

Yeah my point was definitely that I don't think indirect humor making fun of people is funny, not really about how I think it makes Dan feel.
