Or, he was salty coz Phil didn't leave the party with him. Or, he was annoyed that Phil was careless to drink with other youtubers who always take advantage of them. There are other possible reasons but Dan was not happy. I now believe Dan sounded off during the ls.
I am not defending Phil but Dan really seems to like to take charge of editing. If Phil came home with him, it wouldn't make much difference coz Dan will just do all the work. Might as well enjoy and socialize with other people. I really think at least one of them should look friendly/sociable coz they have alienated themselves for more than a year.
If Dan was salty at all underneath the chance to make a joke, it strikes me as salty at himself, not at Phil. if his fear and discomfort of social situations (as he said recently, not gonna bother rehashing this point; it was discussed at length in a thread not long ago), is worse at certain times compared to others, coming home to edit was a good excuse to leave earlier. i relate to that frustration. it's annoyance at yourself, and maybe a bit of jealousy, but jealousy at the other's ability to relax and have fun without it being a 'thing' built up in their head. not at them having fun without you and not limiting their life along with your's. i doubt Dan left the party because they both decided they HAD to upload and Dan had to take the bullet, or because Dan deliberately chooses not to socialise in order to purposefully alienate himself. we have no evidence of either of those things, but we do of the first interpretation. i totally agree though that both can come off as less than caring towards the other occasionally when you interpret their tones as selfish.
the livestream was interesting to me, i didn't find it unpleasant and there were lots of nice little moments, mostly of them silly singing together and discussing things among themselves. Dan does seem a little sensitive or vulnerable lately, as he tends to get, and is defaulting to sarcasm and negativity at times - but actually I think he's showing mostly positive behaviour. throwing himself into gamingmas and visibly relaxing and enjoying the escapism, not dwelling on the fans asking him about danisnotonfire videos in a negative way, framing his responses to that neutrally/positively, criticising yt rewind and the brandcast things, but then qualifying why instead of being totally hyperbolic. as with Dan, there's always a spectrum or context that's a little different from say, the way you might judge the moods of someone else who is not him. yes I don't think he's doing super amazingly right now, but i also don't think he's doing horribly. he's coping and has a lot of positive energy reserve. i feel like i can tell all this purely from the times he
isn't, as they've now become an exception rather than the norm - being a bit sulky and competitive in Kinect Sports, not apologising when he hit Phil accidentally, the emo tweets.
what actually stood out to me was Phil, in relation to Dan. at several points i felt like Phil was unsure of how to keep the mood light and buoyant, and wanted to lead and placate. like these:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G5iQTey ... =phanshows
1.54 dan: you hurt me! phil: did I? why are you so sensitive? (big smile) dan: I have like very squishy shoulders or whatever the fuck that is... phil: sorry.
17.35 Phil cutting off Dan being negative about pokemon
20.03 dan: I genuinely think all the videos are really good. phil: good! of course they are, dan.
27.02 (uploading every day) dan: 'and its only totally ruining your life.' phil: no! its not...its fun. It's fun.'
34.10 dan: 'whats up with danisnotonfire, says john. umm, im making another video before christmas.' phil: 'i'm going to make another video before christmas.'
(distracts with playing with his earlobes) (cuts Dan off with talking about his own channel, then changes the subject)
44.26 dan: 'not in a rush you know. danisnotonfire is a place to creatively expressive myself.'
phil: 'just upload when you like.'
but the most interesting to me was this exchange:
39.25
phil: what are you doing?
dan: singing the final fantasy battle victory theme with my tongue out.
phil: while i was talking!
dan: i'm giving you a soundtrack!
phil: right. well, what was your view of the party Dan?
Dan: umm...for like the hour that i was there?
Phil: yeah
Dan: ate lots of brussels sprouts.
Phil: you are so many brussels sprouts!
Dan: i had two glasses of wine and then went back to edit the sims video -
Phil: that's dedication.
Dan: and for like the first half hour of me editing it i was like (does tipsy impression)
my thoughts:
i think Phil was genuinely irritated and perceived Dan as being rude, but Dan was just...being Dan, with the multifocus issues (and was listening to phil the whole time. i think he doesn't quite get that other people's brains don't work like his and people find multiple focuses distracting/a sign of disrespect). then Phil either thought Dan was humming because he felt left out of the discussion and that perhaps *he* was the one being rude, so asked Dan how he liked the party; or he thought a way to get Dan to stop being rude or bored of the livestream was to include him in the thought process (or is it both?!). But it was clear to me from Dan's reaction that isn't what Dan wanted, and he felt slightly uncomfortable (albeit for a second) having attention drawn to how short of a time he stayed there. he seemed to have a flash of embarrassment or shame in the "for what, like the hour i was there?". and i cant tell whether Phil's 'yeah' is regretting asking, or wanting to push him to talk and feel included anyway. they're both quite hard to read in this exchange. and i also think they're misreading each other slightly.
basically this moment made me uncomfortable, but then they brought it back around so quickly that it was fine, and they seemed fine. and i laughed at Dan being worried the video would go up with mistakes from 2 glasses of wine.
all in all, i focused more on Phil and his (pretty heavily guarded) anxieties than I did any Dan-type mood Dan was in. but it was still a nice chilled liveshow; and it's nice to have confirmation they're enjoying uploading every day on top of other work commitments and seem proud of themselves.
