In other, lighter news, Phil's insta story with that filter jeSuS chRiST I would like to cease to have eyeballs.

(Also was it the same or just a similar filter to the one in Dan's 'just got some work done to step up my catboy realness' picture from last year?)

Edit: glad I made this a separate post for something a little lighter on the top of the page

That filter made one of the most horrifying thumbnails ever I think.

I'm so excited for the quiz tomorrow :love2:

I've never been tempted by Phil's merch before, but I just bought that "I'd rather be at home" mask so quickly.

I like this collection and I love the charity aspect too! I also appreciate him using insta stories more often lately

I also threw some money his way and bought the I'd Rather Be At Home mask. But hey, it's for charity!

I wanted another face mask to be fair, but yes I love these designs (except the bottle looks a bit mad, but maybe it's just the photos?) and the idea behind it. Happy birthday Norman!

I like how Phil has really hit upon our collective spirit with that mask - I, too, bought the 'I'd rather be at home' one.

I know Dan and Phil are the same person blahblahblah, but I can't help but think Dan had a little something to do with "I'd rather be home" tbh.

Like that would be his merch, if he was releasing merch.

Those masks are a little pricey but hey, they look cool and are for a good cause (2 good causes cuz covid).
Love the socks 👍
Don't like the bottle design, minimalist is always my preference.

I think this is his best launch so far.

I bought the blue mask and the Norman socks and I’m really liking these smaller launches. Im actually really liking that he’s releasing different things like these and the pillow from the last drop. Now if IRL could ever figure out their shipping...

i know that we have moved on (and that someone raises this every time dan does something similar) but i'm still peeved about this tweet. it's been buzzing around in my head all day, so i needed to vent

i would first of all like to say that "calm" and "resilient" are not words that i tend to associate with dan. but hey, he's basically a stranger these days, so who am i to comment?

what really bothered me about this was the repeated ~casual-joking-but-also-not-joking~ reference to his "traumatic youth" and this "normalis[ed] abuse" that he has suffered. if he has experienced some awful event(s), that is terrible and it makes me sad for him. i hope that he is still talking to a therapist so he can learn to live with his memories in the healthiest way possible

i think that making edgy/dont-go-there/vague references to trauma in his tweets is not healthy and i wish he thought about the message that he is putting across to his audience with this. dan tweets (or does anything online) so infrequently that anything he does post has a serious impact on his audience. i know that a lot of us on here are older fans, but we are not representative of everyone who follows him. there are young, impressionable people who look up to him, and i think that this ~my mental health sucks but i make jokes about it to cover the fact that i can't cope~ attitude is so unhealthy. i fear for people who try to emulate him, rather than seek the help that they might need

i've been trying to make an argument in my mind for "it's his twitter, he can share what he wants", but i really don't agree with that. if he wants to vent about stuff, he should make a private account. seeing that kind of thing shared to 8 million followers makes me feel embarrassed for him. sometimes it really sinks in for me that he is 29 years old, and still acting like this

i'm not belittling dan or any trauma that he has experienced, but i doubt that there is any adult alive who has not experienced trauma in some way. we learn to live with it as best we can, and try to make a build future for ourselves away from the shadow of the past. basing your image on your suffering mental health is highly troubling and it makes me incredibly uncomfortable

tl;dr - please seek help if you need it (but don't take advice from youtubers)

i couldn't agree more with what you've written! especially the bolded piece. it was okay when it was buried amongst a variety of more "fun" tweets, but now it just feels like this is all there is. and i'm like 85% positive that's not all there is to dan's life right now. i'm not asking him to stop tweeting altogether - that feels like the kind of response he'd have if he ever read this - but just... idk. i'm certain there are things that make him smile these days - tweet about that!

my issue with his twitter lately has been that it's also just... mildly triggering and not funny. at the very least, this tweet isn't. there's no real joke here. it's just... sad. and i don't mean "pathetic" when i say sad, i literally just mean sad. it makes me sad for him and then it makes me internalize it and reflect on myself. i started going to therapy a few years ago and feel like i've worked through (as much as one can) some of my issues and when people online throw depressing things like this around as a joke - i realize they're coping - but what's a coping mechanism for one person can be a trigger for another. and probably that's on me to clean up my feed, but he's a public figure i want to keep up with so... idfk. i'm not sure what the solution is.

here's a good ted talk that's relevant and initially made me reflect on dan and this topic (tw suicide):

Guess my save the whales question really was in the right vein. The norman socks aren't a huge surprise after the plant tour video but I am happy they are finally here. Most other merch I don't go for 'cause I won't wear or use it but SOCKS, boy am I down for more socks.

It's fascinating to hear how many people like and would/did go for the masks, they just aren't my personal style plus I sew and have already made a bunch of masks for myself, family and to donate. I really don't need any more. I love that Phil says 'wear your damn mask' and capital lester says 'if you happen to need one here's one you can buy from me'.

I'm liking Phil's sort of overarching 2020 merch theme being water. A nice follow on from last years aquarius/space themes.

Also interesting that it doesn't seem like there will be an AP video before the quiz thing tomorrow. I was wondering if that would be the case, I could see it being better to give the quiz thing a go with a smaller group of people who've just come from twitter and instagram since it's a new platform and looks to have taken quite a bit of setup (meaning there's probably kinks to be worked out). I wonder if this means there will be a video sometime next week, a chance to spon the merch on YT while it's still fresh and also maybe mention quizzes/liveshows if tomorrow is successful and he plans to do it as a regular thing (weekly? biweekly?? idk)

Phil's new merch is so much up my alley I'm really hoping it lasts a long time because I have so many expenses this month but I really want that water bottle and that stay at home mask!!

I disagree, I think Phil being his introvert self and enjoying his cozy home is very much on brand for him. He's just as much of a homebody as Dan is so I don't see why Dan should get creativity points for it?

I love the merch!! I’ve been wondering for ages if they’d put out masks, and I love the design; the pouch and mask are so up my alley I actually gasped, lol. And I love the design of the bottle! I was expecting it to launch tomorrow just before the quiz but this is fine too :)

And Norman merch was inevitable, hehe. I love the socks. :) (Though shouldn’t it technically be on the D&P shop as he’s “a shared fish”? ;))

Dan had nothing to do with Phil’s merch because “I’d rather be at home” lacks the fake edgy/relatable element that Dan always puts in what he does.

Speaking of Dan... why so active all of sudden ? Hm. Either he’s bored or he’s preparing something. Either way, I don’t trust him. :thekoolkatz:

Dan really only has two modes huh? Sad and sexual. Same.

Turns out he's a posh dirty bitch though. Sources (missemma) tell me UK tapwater does not need to be filtered. Thankfully Phil knows what's up:

THIS I low key hate that whenever Phil does anything people like from editing to merch it's somehow YouTube guru Dan pulling the strings. Phil has often talked about being a homebody and social anxiety, he just hasn't made it his brand/personality like Dan.

Unrelated I'm 1000% here for salt and pepper Phil.

Feel like I should clarify that I wasn't giving Dan credit/points for the merch. At the end of the day it's Phil's merch and Phil's concept. I was just having a bit of fun. They're literally attached at the hip.... surely they brainstorm ideas together.

Now I’m picturing Phil drinking straight from the kitchen sink faucet.

I completely agree with lauren and rizzo on Dan’s previous tweet (plus his punctuation style makes it so awkward. Like I know what he’s saying, but I don’t “get it” because of the delivery.)

Yay Norman socks! :betta: I’m glad others like the rest of the collection as those items feel like filler to me, but it’s for a good cause so I can’t really complain.

I guess I should sign up for this quiz thing. I keep imagining Dan creating an account, logging on and defeating us all.

I didn't mean it as a personal attack I guess I just see it a lot and get defensive. I'm not sure how much they discuss YouTube stuff anymore since they apparently hadn't discussed the future of the gaming channel when Phil did his Q&A at vidcon.

With Vidcon I took it more as a 'haven't had a sit down conversation deciding what to do' and not 'haven't spoken about it at all.' Some things are important enough you know need to talk about talking about it, you know? And I think that's where they were. I think it was a conscious decision to live their lives in the moment (especially in that immediately post-coming-out phase) and let themselves exist without committing to future plans, less than they actually just didn't talk about it.

I definitely think that Dan has influence in everything Phil does, and vice versa - I mean, if we need proof of that, just look at Phil's recent few videos involving Dan, lol. We know from their own mouths that they see each others videos first after editing and put in input. That's not a career thing; that's a them thing. I think that closeness absolutely remains. And I don't think they view it on a point system so it wouldn't occur to me to either. I think it's okay to acknowledge influence or the places where their personalities overlap without it being a personal insult to one or the other.

I don't think that seeing Dan-branding in things Phil does is taking away any credit from Phil; I think it's really interesting how we've seen the lines blur as Phil's branding is less positioned in contrast to Dan's. Being a #relatable introvert has always been part of both of their branding, but to me, "I'd rather be at home" matches "ugh" in terms of being vaguely rude/snarky toward spectators, and feels like a place where a years-ago-Phil would have made a different choice.
