welp someone has told me I have fat fingers too when I tried playing the keyboard at school (which I do tbh but they joked about them how dare) I went to a few lessons but I ended up ditching them :? mostly because I'm scared of evaluation and I had to go to a class full of people (it was really scary for me, I still want to go but lmao I too am scared of confrontation )

Found the video pretty enjoyable, I personally love it when the filming of the sketch is a bit shaky ? Makes it feel more authentic for some reason ahah.
It makes me happy that he's going to get a teacher again, it reminds me that it's never too late uk? I was very apprehensive about joining classes too because I felt like I was a bit too old to learn twinkle twinkle little star but well I appreciate the messages his videos have even though they're a lil too preachy sometimes

I don't see how anything they've been doing is them being more "out". Yes, they've been acting more natural recently, but nothing they've done is explicitly coupley. Don't get me wrong, I think there's a good chance they're together. And if they are, I wouldn't necessarily be surprised if they went down the "come out by subtly slipping something in but not actually explicitly saying anything" route. E.i., going out on a date and actually calling it a date. I feel like they would do something that's literally not interpretable any other way than "they're together". I do think they're showing us a more person side to them, and we're seeing more what they're like in real life. But so far, that hasn't including anything that points towards them dating. I mean, walking along a beach together for Phil's birthday? It's cute. And it's cute to imagine that in a romantic setting, and I think it's okay if you imagine it like that. But it's imagining. Dan and Phil have not said or done anything to indicate it was actually romantic. So I just don't think that it's fair to say they're been acting "borderline out". Dan and Phil will come out when they want to, and whichever way they do that, they're gonna make it clear. And until then, we shouldn't say they're "out" or "acting out" (lol I make it sound like people are accusing them of throwing tantrums) or whatever.
I understand what you're saying, and agree with you, but I think in this instance the key word was borderline. I interpreted that as meaning they're closer to "out" than they've ever been before. A year or so ago (or maybe even a few months ago!) they would have been much more secretive about Dan spending Phil's birthday with his family, yet this time they seemingly couldn't stop sharing pictures of their seaside walks together. That is a noticeable difference, and no it isn't explicitly romantic, and I definitely don't think we should be making out like they're actually out (or pressuring them to come out etc), but it does suggest they're more comfortable with us assuming things than they ever have been before. I think "borderline out" is a fair enough description of that.

re Dan's family's financial situation: It does seem that he certainly feels that they didn't have much money growing up, and the fact that at 12 he had to work to pay for his own piano lessons would definitely support that - I believe him. But like MythicalPinkTrashCan said, being able to go on annual trips does suggest that they weren't SUPER poor. Growing up we were what I'd consider lower middle class and we never once went overseas, nor did we own a house. Although I guess it's all subjective and probably varies a lot, as despite that my parents were able to pay for my piano lessons. IDK, ultimately I think he's telling the truth and not exaggerating, although the overseas trips thing does throw me off a little.

re Dan's thighs: I love them and I think he looks great in those skinny jeans

ah i can relate to dan's financial situation for sure. i never had too much growing up. sure i got toys every now and then but most of the time they were for my birthday, or i would get a few things from my aunts but other than that nothing too extravagant. i have never been to disney world, or a concert. or anything sort of like that, except for somewhat cheap local amusement parks. we've never really been on a "real" vacation. it sucked but eh what can i do. even now at 19 my mom struggles a lot with money so it's very hard to go out and do fun things like the mall or the arcade or something when she has to spend money on important things such as food or household items (bathroom stuff, kitchen stuff, stuff like that). so i can definitely relate to his financial situation.

I'm inclined to think Dan probably gave his parents a normal kid excuse for quitting extra curricular activities like he didn't enjoy it as much as he thought he would or it was too hard rather than telling them the piano teacher moved because that just makes zero sense when he'd already said she lived in their street. Even if she didn't go out much there is still a fair chance they'd see her around at some point and/or notice a new family didn't appear at her house. As far as lies go that would be a dumb one even for a 12 year old.

I think the telling them she'd moved to Scotland thing might just be one of those things Dan just says for effect or because he thought it sounded better for some reason.

As for why Dan felt he had to hide it from his parents well I was also the type of kid who would have just lied in that scenario as I didn't like to confide in my parents about stuff and I have wonderful parents.
I don't think the fact he didn't confide in them about stuff like that means they were some kind of monsters. Or that they must be the worst for just accepting at face value he was done with piano and there wasn't something he wasn't telling them about it. From my experience it's actually fairly normal kid/teen behaviour to get really excited about some new hobby only to lose interest in it within a short period of time. It happens and there usually isn't anything big behind it.
Totally agree with this post and just want to tack on to it.

I'm completely guilty of this as well, but sometimes I feel like we take everything Dan says at face value a bit too much? (I'm speaking rhetorically - not about IDB specifically.) Which is all good and well coming from a live-show (where a good 95% his words are unplanned) but when you consider how long he takes to write out a script and make an entertaining video for dinof.... I just don't think everything will be honest. Especially when the topic of the video, as some have already mentioned, is less traumatic than he makes it out to be.

That said, I loved Dan's video and the fact that we got another upload so soon. papierklemmen's video summed up my feelings perfectly. Every time he drops a sketch, I become newly enamored with him and my Dan-girl tendencies come blasting out of whatever trash can I shoved them in. He's just a great storyteller and a hilarious actor and I live for his terrible costuming. Bring back sharpie-wrinkles.

I'm probs overthinking it, but did anyone else get a mild chuckle out of the "Hi, my name is..." at 2:30? Nope? Just me? Cool then.

I've got nothing but pride and excitement seeping out of me for 2017!Deppy. This many uploads so early in the year, it almost feels scheduled. And it's evidence that 2017 is the year of relaxation and youtube-focus and life things and I am just....

Throwing back to 5 years ago, I wanted to comment very briefly on the excellent timestamps alittledizzy put together for an old liveshow:
alittledizzy wrote:1:06:45 - "Dare: have sex with me. I'll put that one in the reserve pile. I might come to that, if uh. The things aren't good."
IlovethisIlovethisIlovethis. 2012 wasn't all bad. I LOVE this. I'll never believe the "they briefly broke up in 2012" theory. Fite me. Also, Phil with the A+ poker face.

And to end this rambly post... I'm late, but thank you mods for the fantastic FAQ! What an excellent resource!

I agree with this. Why would Dan rehash an old, previously told childhood story, apart from going along with people shouting PLAY THE PIANO during every other liveshow?
This video felt like he grew out of it to me, same as How To Survive Exams.

On the bright side, maybe his true talent is impersonating old ladies, I liked that. Also smiled at "..I play the piano. Badly" because he said it exactly the same way he did in AmazingDan, such a throwback.

if you fit in your jeans, they're the right size, and that's about it

seriously, he's sitting down in this picture, every thigh "flattens out" when subjected to being squished against a flat surface (chair) by a weight (person) :wtf: what's a person with thicker thighs supposed to do about that? their legs will look like that no matter the pants they're wearing.

I got the impression from the video that Dan just didn't tell them? He even said if it happened as an adult he'd just tell his mum, which implies that as a kid he didn't actually let his parents know that he didn't like the teacher so they probably had no idea. Wasn't expecting a Daniel video last night. Was about to go to sleep when I got the notification.
Freaking loved the video. I love these types of Dan videos. Every time he does one, I remember why I am such a Dan girl! I agree with other posters, that the quality seems to have increased. The editing and filming was very smooth and the lighting was beautiful.

I can't relate to the video at all (I learnt Violin but that was during school hours). I had massive music lesson flashbacks with the Dj button. The best part of the music lessons was playing around with the all sound buttons on the keyboards.

thank you honestly, as someone with thick thighs it can be kind of hard to feel confident wearing skinny jeans. as you said, he's sitting down and that's what thick thighs look like sitting down. in other shots he's standing up and the jeans don't look so tight. i think he looks great tbh!!

Yeah I also have thick thighs and I get really insecure when sitting down/in situations where they look big so I agree with this. Dan likes to wear skinny jeans and doesn't have a typical body for it that would be encouraged to wear it so power to him. Especially because he's a man, it must be even worse for him because of beauty standards. Phil's expressed he likes them thicc too guys, so dw. ;) (also I forget who said it but thank you because I did mean "borderline "out"" as in they're not out yet and I'm not saying they're going to but they are so open that they are closer and more open than before.

I spotted that, but when I write my posts I tend to forget most of the little things I noticed. That bit was great.

Also +1 for Dan's legs and jeans. I don't think he's that big, thicc seems excessive tbh he's pretty slim. I still love the Dansaur Krave video mainly because he's wearing those tight shorts.

same!! i mean if i can recognise that his thighs look great, why shouldn't i think the same about mine??

and yikes that comment, he does seem very adamant that he isn't as great at piano as his over-enthusiastic audience thinks he is. i get where he's coming from, judging by some of the comments you'd think he was an absolute genius at piano. that must get a bit embarrassing, having people gush over him when he knows that he's not amazing, at least by his own standards. however, i do think he should give himself a bit of credit, he really is quite good. being able to play by ear is no small feat, just because he doesn't read music doesn't mean he's terrible at piano. he does seem to have a natural affinity for music, and i definitely don't think he's bad at playing by any means. for those in his audience who maybe don't play an instrument (or me, who played for four years but gave up partly because of my weird teacher but lbr mostly because i found it really hard) his piano playing is really not that bad.

Loved seeing these, and I can't help feeling 3 dinof throwbacks in a single video is a sign that Dan's becoming increasingly comfortable with himself and his past on YouTube: recognising his earlier YouTube days as a part of personal growth rather than getting embarrassed and running away from it, as he often has before.

(also great to see so many pianists on idb!) ;)

thick thighs where, dan's thighs fit twice into mine

Dan's thighs look thicker because he's wearing jeans like one size to small or something. Look at the way his jeans rest on his hips (or don't), it's a sign they don't fit properly. Getting jeans that properly fit can be a real pain in the arse for someone with long legs and no arse. He should go a size up imo.

I think this is the kind of situation where it's hard to imagine someone else's parents reacting in a different way than in your own experience your parents did.

At twelve I chose to do an after school activity that I had to pay for with my own money. I was absolutely miserable and lasted about five months, and my parents didn't realize how much I hated it (because I never explicitly said so; I was paying for it myself and didn't want them to think I'd spent my money badly) or else they did pick up on it and just weren't surprised that twelve year old me didn't love the work that went into it. Dan's parents could have easily thought Dan missing lessons was just Dan deciding video games were more fun, if they even knew he missed him. In households where both parents are working it wouldn't be uncommon for them to not get home until after his lesson might have been over anyway. (No idea if Dan's parents fit that or not; I'm just throwing out hypotheticals to prove the 'missing information' point.) We also don't know how miserable Dan actually seemed (outwardly, to his parents) since the descriptions we're getting are through a filter of a comedy video.

As evident from many other pictures, including the one posted upthread, his jeans fit perfectly normal for skinny jeans on a person with thicker thighs, slimmer calves and slim waist. I say that as a person with exactly the same, except more pronounced in every department, physique. This is the suffering we have to endure in exchange for usually great butts.

And hey, if we discussed noses for 2 threads we get to have an at length discussion about Dan's thighs too
