I went back and reread my old recap of the Melbourne (evening) show and i was curious/surprised about the differences between it and the Hollywood show. One in particular that struck me was Phil's weird kid story about pretending to move overseas. In the Hollywood show, he says he pretended to move to America, while in my show, he pretended to move to Australia. Of course, this makes sense, bc of the audience.

I guess what I want to ask is, does anyone know any other differences between the UK shows vs the US shows vs the Aus shows? I know about the American flag jackets and the bigger US stages. Were things added/changed between the UK and US shows, or were they basically the same, minus the audience participation? Maybe we can compare to the Hollywood show since that's the one most of us have watched.

In my UK show (Birmingham), the weird kid story was about his Dad being French (or something along those lines). Then the Paris Terror attacks happened so I think they changed it for the later show anyway.

I know Phil said that he added in different magic tricks. There was definitely some in there that I didn't see. We had the ball one, and obviously the box one.

I think it was mostly the same tbh. I don't think they changed a lot from the UK show.

An Actual Semi-Coherent Review

Some of the direct video-to-show parts of it dragged for me, probably because it's all stuff we've seen before? But they worked the audience amazingly well and know their fan base inside out. Both of their solo segments were on point, unpopular opinion but I am looking forward to (hopefully) seeing an increase of solo content on their channels following the tour. The last 20 mins of them together on stage - Dil + Song - we're the best imo and made me super emo and trashy could you tell. I haven't read anything on here as I was avoiding spoilers so sorry if this is a big rehash.

Honestly after the trailer I was really conflicted because of the obvious staging but after watching it twice (hehe trash one day, trash always), I can say that I really like it.
Yeah some staged/acted parts honestly could have been avoided but overall I felt it really reproduced the happy mood they must have had during the tour.
I really liked seeing the backstage production, the interview with the professionals that helped them create the show and I thought the commentary of "directors Dan and Phil" sat on their director chairs were actually interesting and genuine, not completely awkward and stilted like the promo videos were.

I really liked the bus tour. It was a giant shitpost in the middle of their documentary. I was a bit surprised at the outrage on idb about them showing the separate sleeping arrangement. I didn't really think they were no homoing during the doc (they even found a way to put the LGBT flag in there). Yeah they made clear two separate beds, like they had in their tweets like they have in all their videos ever...
Idk like I am convinced that they are together personally but maybe they shared the bed, maybe they didn't and Dan really slept in the bunk, maybe they took turns.
I just think that them saying they slept together in that bed on their ytr documentary would have been pretty much the equivalent of confirming they are together. And YES, i agree just friends can platonically sleep together, I sleep in the same bed as my friends too blablabla but honestly with their history, with the suspicions around them, with nearly all their followers (and colleagues!) already convinced they are dating, saying that they slept together in one bed for two months on their youtube red official behind the scenes documentary would have been the equivalent of coming out as a couple imo.

I think the only part that I really disliked in the documentary was that dinners scene were they put sticky stars on the cities they are going to. Like it was so fucking fake and stupid, I was cringing so hard. We know that they called the venues themselves. They perfectly knew where they were going and where those cities were. One stage crew person posted that map on their instagram weeks before the tour. I don't know why i hated that part so much, but I really did.

I think that's also a bit sad that they refrained nearly completely to film backstage crew or traveling crew. From the documentary it nearly looks like Deppy were traveling alone (and for ex were alone on their tour bus), which we know isn't true. I think that's a shame.

But overall I really liked the documentary. The last few minutes of bloopers were the best too!

I had to stop it several times to let out steam and cringe lol BUT overall I liked it. I think it would have been 100 times better to see it for real with the atmosphere and excitement etc.

I think the beginning was especially difficult to watch because Dan was SO OTT. Like I love Dan to death but he really was overacting and it was kinda painful to watch. Idk if it comes out a lot stronger on camera than live, if he was stressed because it was the filmed version or if he overacted like that at all shows but really I was struggling to watch.
Then he relaxed and it became a lot easier. He was also all sweaty and curling which was really adding to the quality. My favourite parts were the song obviously but also the fanfic part. I didn't think it was cringe at all tbh, just good self aware fun.
Weird kids was underwhelming, ISG was kinda ok but I felt the questions were kinda bad from reading the spoiler thread on here, I think they went with really safe questions and answers for the filmed show. Same for tumblr tag, it was cute but kinda boring.
But overall so well done to Dan and Phil. That's such a huge accomplishment.

I wonder if they will post extras on their channels because I remember they filmed an alternative fanfic and they probably have still a lot of vlogy footage. So maybe they could do a bloopers/extra thingy. Idk.

I finally watched TATINOF, so now I'm here to trash it up! No spoilers, just want to say that I finally get it. I am in awe at what they have created.

If you are finding it hard to get through the first few minutes of the show, just persevere. You won't be disappointed!

After sleeping and not being intoxicated anymore, I can only say that it upsets me how some of you act like Deppy owe us the truth or are shipbaiting or something. So, let's talk about that for a second. There are no direct TATINOF or documentary spoilers, but you can imagine some things and since Dan would see that as a spoiler, I'll put it under the spoiler tag.

Shipbaiting, in my opinion, is using titles like "Is Phan real?" or "Romantic Dinner In London - A Day In The Life of Phan". It's using phan related thumbnails like that drawing of them kissing at the radio station in the tumblr tag or Dan shaking Phil in the DAPGO-memes video. It's making people believe they are together by only showing one bedroom or calling each other "babe" just for the reaction other people have.
But what do Deppy do? They keep their thumbnails and titles clean. Yes, they make suggestive jokes and show the Phandom they're okay with being shipped by reading out fanfiction or showing phanart, but at the same time, they focus on the fact that they don't share bedrooms sometimes, aren't really affectionate and hide some of the things they do with each other. So they obviously don't want the ship to be seen as a real thing.
If they are together, it's obvious why that's the case: They want their privacy and are afraid what happens when they break up (even though the latter doesn't really make that much of a difference because we would notice it anyway). Maybe they also have someone really homophobic in their family and aren't even out to that person, who knows?
If they aren't together, I assume that they feel trapped in their situation. On the one hand, they don't want people to think they're together but on the other hand, they don't want people to be disappointed. Which leads to them going from to on a regular basis. And that results in people saying they are shipbaiting. So what can they do? Nothing really, because whatever they do if they aren't together, they lose. We probably will find out one day, if that's the case because they probably won't live together forever in this scenario and I dread the day that this is happening.
I hope for them and everyone that they are together and that it stays that way.

So I caved and did it "right" last night. I watched them in the order I was told to: show first, then doc. But I watched all the pinofs/bloopers first while drinking pumpkin ale because I wasn't kidding about needing to be inebriated to get through the show. I read all the reviews, I saw all the spoilers, I knew it would be rough. And I don't say that to discount all the work they put into it, it's just that they're trying so hard and it's so much, I can't control what makes me cringe I'm sorry. And wow did a lot of that make me have to look away from the screen and wish for immediate death. Just a little bit. But it was worth it! No spoilers, it was lovely overall, it made me proud and happy. I could have dealt with the cringe much better if I could have seen it live, but as always, fuck the rest of Canada that isn't Toronto

I wish it had been 2 hours long and more DITL-y than BTS. Every time we got some D&P-filmed footage, it was gone too soon. I could have watched 15 minutes of Phil learning magic with Chris Cox, 20 minutes of fail-dancing, I even would have welcomed more pancake pilgrimages. It really felt more like a slick summary of what I would have liked to see more of. But I still loved it and understand it's a larger (and therefore less intimate) production. But damn, think of all the phone footage they have. All those touristy outings that we'll only be able to see in photos in DAPGO. Ah well. Fuck the bus, my biggest problem with this was: WHERE WAS MARTYN AND CORNELIA? I wanted some familial bants, some actual bros fucking around, but I didn't even see them in the background anywhere. What's up with that.

Busgate, the bane of my existence:

Y'all, they fuckin'. Lurky don't go anywhere, your dreams aren't dead and we need you. Nobody will pry these goggles off my face until one or both of them literally date another human being. Where are the SOs? They're attractive wonderful humans- they're not so socially inept or averse that they couldn't find someone else in almost a decade. They have each other. Why is everyone upset about the bus? They tweeted exactly what we saw months ago, and we had a little fit then (I had quite the breakdown personally, but I got over it pretty quick), it's done. Australia DITL bed situation, same thing. It's done. This was more of the same. This has been their narrative for this entire tour and it's been consistent for months, let's not break shit when they bookend it all with the exact same thing they've been serving the whole time. We reached the end of this chapter, it's done.

Yet again: if they didn't want to make it painfully EXPLICITLY clear to those watching that they weren't sharing a bed, if they could chill the fuck out for even 5 minutes, they would have just shared it like typical friends. Or they would have alternated as someone suggested earlier. "You get it this month, I'll take it the next." No, it needed to be spelled out for everyone: we're not sharing, we're not touching our bodies together, don't get any ideas.

(Sidenote: This isn't no-homoing, jesus. No-Homo is fully offensive and translates to "ew I don't want anyone to think I'm an icky gay, better overcompensate to be sure nobody thinks I'm like that". I know people are just using it as short-hand for 'no-phan...o?' but just call it that (or come up with something better) because no-homo is not what they're doing and calling it that degrades us all)

Interesting moment in the doc: Dan giving a soundbite of how uncomfortable the bunk is for his giant body, selling that narrative for all it's worth. And Phil... deftly changes the subject to 'lol we can't shit on the bus'. Hm, yes, change that subject Phil, lying is boring and stressful and you're bad at it anyway.

Here's another thing people have already said, but whatever: They were travelling with a bunch of strangers. Probably strangers who signed non-disclosure agreements, but still. Plebs with big mouths who they'll never see again. They're not going to cuddle together in front of the camera crew filming them for a big YT-bank-rolled production. They're going to act like two dudes who are friends and doing a show together. About their friendship. "Yes, book two rooms production company, just as you're doing for every other individual human involved in this travelling circus." I don't know if the camera crew slept on the bus with them or if they would be that committed to the charade to actually force Dan to sleep in that bunk every night (methinks... no), but as much as they're projecting a certain image for the cameras, I believe it's reasonable they'd project the same thing to the crew people along for the ride. They've had enough practice over the years with YT events, no?

If it sounds like I'm trying to talk myself into believing any of this, I'm not. Again: move out, date other people, maybe I'll change my mind. But it's still clear as day to me. (Though if it turned out they weren't currently a thing, I wouldn't burn tabinof and curse their names, I would just be very, very confused).

Fan-fiction section of the show: very funny (funnier when sauced on pumpkin ale probably), very self-aware, I'll call it fanservice fine, but it doesn't veer into shipbaiting imo. Their fans write fanfiction, the internet came to life, they got inserted into some of it, and dealt with it as best they could for comedic effect. It's Not That Deep.

Verdict: liked both. Liked the doc better even though it was very surface, less intimate (just meaning DITL-y) than I'd hoped. But they're great, I have a scary amount of affection in my heart for two strangers on the internet, but I'll allow it. Excited for the probable joint liveshow (on Sunday??? or sooner???) and then UNDERTALE AT SOME POINT IN THE NEXT TWO MONTHS GODDAMMIT. Priorities people.

I enjoyed both videos. Cringy but fun to watch. I liked the docu but I think it could have been better. I am comparing it to Pentatonix's "On My Way Home" docu and it felt flat in comparison. PTX showed not only how they prepared for the world tour and how everthing have come full circle (they ended their tour in Texas where the group started).

I wish that if they planned to no homo their relationship, they should have focused more to something else aside from the making of the show. For example, they could have showed the different cities and food they tried. It will go with their theme of trying new things. Or, they could have shown clips with their different crew members. It will be a breath of fresh air to see them interact outside the Youtube community. Or, they could have shown more of their fan interactions.

No homo-ing was annoying at first but I remembered Pewds. We will never know if they are together. It's really annoying because I am nosy. But looking back I began watching them because I really like their friendship. I want to have a best friend and a friendship just like theirs.

If they are together but don't like to tell the public, I can accept that (soon). My family still looks for my ex-gf who I introduced as my "best friend" even after 7yrs of not being together so I understand that people will get more invested that they are now. If they drift apart as friends (which I don't think will happen soon), it will be sad. I think the word is melancholy. But if they break-up as bf, it will be heartbreaking for them and for us.

I love the videos, the show was a bit cringy but I don't care. You can see the effort they put on it and that makes it amazing.

And the doc was great, to see all the people involved and see how deppy appreciates them, the little snippets when they film each other. Busgate was so fake that it make me laugh, so It really didn't bother me.

If they are together, it's obvious why that's the case: They want their privacy and are afraid what happens when they break up (even though the latter doesn't really make that much of a difference because we would notice it anyway). Maybe they also have someone really homophobic in their family and aren't even out to that person, who knows?
If they aren't together, I assume that they feel trapped in their situation. On the one hand, they don't want people to think they're together but on the other hand, they don't want people to be disappointed. Which leads to them going from to on a regular basis. And that results in people saying they are shipbaiting. So what can they do? Nothing really, because whatever they do if they aren't together, they lose. We probably will find out one day, if that's the case because they probably won't live together forever in this scenario and I dread the day that this is happening.
I hope for them and everyone that they are together and that it stays that way.

Where are the SOs? They're attractive wonderful humans- they're not so socially inept or averse that they couldn't find someone else in almost a decade. They have each other. Why is everyone upset about the bus? They tweeted exactly what we saw months ago, and we had a little fit then (I had quite the breakdown personally, but I got over it pretty quick), it's done. Australia DITL bed situation, same thing. It's done. This was more of the same. This has been their narrative for this entire tour and it's been consistent for months, let's not break shit when they bookend it all with the exact same thing they've been serving the whole time. We reached the end of this chapter, it's done.

Yet again: if they didn't want to make it painfully EXPLICITLY clear to those watching that they weren't sharing a bed, if they could chill the fuck out for even 5 minutes, they would have just shared it like typical friends. Or they would have alternated as someone suggested earlier. "You get it this month, I'll take it the next." No, it needed to be spelled out for everyone: we're not sharing, we're not touching our bodies together, don't get any ideas.

(Sidenote: This isn't no-homoing, jesus. No-Homo is fully offensive and translates to "ew I don't want anyone to think I'm an icky gay, better overcompensate to be sure nobody thinks I'm like that". I know people are just using it as short-hand for 'no-phan...o?' but just call it that (or come up with something better) because no-homo is not what they're doing and calling it that degrades us all)

Interesting moment in the doc: Dan giving a soundbite of how uncomfortable the bunk is for his giant body, selling that narrative for all it's worth. And Phil... deftly changes the subject to 'lol we can't shit on the bus'. Hm, yes, change that subject Phil, lying is boring and stressful and you're bad at it anyway.

Here's another thing people have already said, but whatever: They were travelling with a bunch of strangers. Probably strangers who signed non-disclosure agreements, but still. Plebs with big mouths who they'll never see again. They're not going to cuddle together in front of the camera crew filming them for a big YT-bank-rolled production. They're going to act like two dudes who are friends and doing a show together. About their friendship. "Yes, book two rooms production company, just as you're doing for every other individual human involved in this travelling circus." I don't know if the camera crew slept on the bus with them or if they would be that committed to the charade to actually force Dan to sleep in that bunk every night (methinks... no), but as much as they're projecting a certain image for the cameras, I believe it's reasonable they'd project the same thing to the crew people along for the ride. They've had enough practice over the years with YT events, no?

If it sounds like I'm trying to talk myself into believing any of this, I'm not. Again: move out, date other people, maybe I'll change my mind. But it's still clear as day to me. (Though if it turned out they weren't currently a thing, I wouldn't burn tabinof and curse their names, I would just be very, very confused).

Fan-fiction section of the show: very funny (funnier when sauced on pumpkin ale probably), very self-aware, I'll call it fanservice fine, but it doesn't veer into shipbaiting imo. Their fans write fanfiction, the internet came to life, they got inserted into some of it, and dealt with it as best they could for comedic effect. It's Not That Deep.

a bit late but i watched both the show and the doc last night, and i was actually really impressed.
i almost got a bit emotional about it, like i can't believe these two nerds i've been watching for years did all of this??

all thoughts under the thing

tatinof:
- firstly i'm so so proud of them. you could tell they spent a lot of time and energy into making it as good as possible, they really went all out. especially with the musical number
- it was definitely cringe at times, but at the same time i enjoyed it. it was only a couple of times it was too much, but mostly it was kind of a mix of cringing and smiling.
- i think most things have already been said, and i should probably watch it again before i can talk about specific things

documentary:
- i have kind of mixed feelings about it. while a part of me would've wanted more of their vloggy kind of stuff i know it isn't a ditl. but at the same time i did think it was kind of interesting seeing how it was all put together and everything.
- there were a lot of small moments that were really cute and funny, like phil forgetting how to walk lmao and dan chasing phil while wearing the dil head and things like that. also how did he manage to just pack three left shoes?? i really need to watch it again.
- about #busgate: i didn't really have any expectations about it, but i was still kind of disappointed. mostly just because it felt like it took up too much space just talking about that?? idk, it's whatever. i'm mostly kind of in the middle when it comes to whether or not they're together and this didn't really change anything.

i feel like there's probably more, but i'm too tired to really think right now. but overall i did love both of them.

It's honestly such an amazing example of how far they've come in such a short time. That was January of 2014. They would not hesitate to tell us they'd been talking on the phone to each other right now.

I have nothing spoiler-y to say...I just want to say that after worshipping the ground that Dan walks on for a year and not really appreciating Phil as much...oh how the tables have turned after watching both films. I found Dan really annoying and Phil was well, amazing. There was no character, I feel like I really got to know him and I'm so mad that Dan is so dominant on camera.

When I first started watching DAP in 2012, I much preferred Phil. He was cool, a bit weird but totally endearing, and totally mysterious. Dan was a needy, whinge, crude teenager to me. They've both changed a lot since then, but those films reminded me why I used to adore Phil. This year, becoming more obsessed made me love Dan because he's just the one you go for because of his bubbly personality. Phil is more subtle in his humour, but I'm so glad it showed itself more in the films. He is honestly a wonderful, hilarious human being and I'm annoyed that it took me two films to realise it. I am confirmed Phil trash now...I totally get what you were all going about.

I’m hoping this isn’t too bingo-boardy but I have thoughts after seeing people being genuinely upset about busgate (apologies in advance for how often I say “brand” )

People, like Hank Green in the doc, say they don’t know why D&P have such a devoted fan base. I’d argue that the answer is pretty simple, and it’s mostly due to the idea of Phan. I’m not discounting their personalities, charm, hard work, etc. But their chemistry together and the possibility that it might be True Love draws in and keeps a lot of people that would probably grow bored of other “best friend” pairings. Love stories and mysteries are the biggest themes in fiction throughout history, and the D&P brand offers both. The emphasis, however, needs to be on the fact that it is a brand. Do D&P acknowledge it’s part of their brand? Yes. Is that inherently bad? That’s up to you. However, their brand is not reality.

I think the best example of this is Dan in his live shows. That “version” of Dan, which is arguably the most authentic we’re going to get, is not the same person as when he’s performing, either on stage or in gaming videos, etc. Live-show Dan gets agitated, goes on tangents on topics that he knows most of his audience won’t relate to, and he ignores the fact that Phil is destroying their kitchen and it can be heard clearly in his room. All this to say that when he’s being more “real”, the branding falls away, and that includes being half of Phan. Now, whether you believe they are together or not, I think it will make a lot of people sleep better at night if they remember that we literally don’t know what they do in their lives that they don’t share. And what they do share is cute, and can be read into, but when they’re in full-on brand mode like in Tatinof we’re seeing the show, not the people. And yes, we love the people, but we need to stop pretending we “know” them and their lives because we just don’t. It’s their jobs, after all.

D&P wanted their doc to show two friends who play-fought over a bed. Real D&P talked about watching the whole of Bates Motel while on tour, which would have necessitated a lot of together time in front of a TV, possibly while on a bed. Who knows, really. If it bothers you that what they officially put out doesn’t match even the small glimpse of reality that we get, then I think you need to decide what you really want out of D&P- is it entertainment, or a real life love story. If it’s the latter, you’re probably SOL, because they’re going to keep that part of their lives private.

Feel free to disagree with me, I have just been thinking this for a while and the show performance solidified the dichotomy in my mind.
