fancybum, thank you for sharing your thoughts! you're making so many good and interesting points in there. i've been thinking about during breakfast and just wanted to quickly add the following: the "how would people react to dan casually, but firmly mentioning he's not straight in a ls" scenario seems to be something that's currently in the making. i'm really on the fence trying to imagine what would happen -- i can see it not changing things much, everything seems so chill at the moment wrt deppy revelations, but maybe i'm being too optimistic, maybe there will be unicorn and teen magazine articles, complete with labelling dan in bright letters, the world's a shitty place after all. i really can't estimate how huge of a deal it'd be outside this bubble of way-too-invested, non-bigoted, largely(?) lgbt+ users. so maybe dan is really on a timeline, or testing the waters, or trying to ease people into this knowledge. but as viewers, we're probably also inclined to assign a plot line or narrative not only to what he's doing, but also to why, when it'd also be a valid possibility that he just doesn't want to, or wants to do exactly that and changes his mind in every single ls.

i'm sorry i think this isn't really an addition to what you said.
edit: ahhh fuck me why is this jumbled mess on the top of the page now.

edit 2: i've been debating whether i want to bring up this tweet, but it bugs me and i'd like to discuss it:
now maybe i'm reading it wrong and of course dan's tone is hard to read here (joking? throwing shade?), but what i'm currently taking away from it is that making an anti-semitic joke and mentioning hitler are somehow comparable. now i'd be happy (...?) to hear that felix is regularly mentioning hitler in a historical context in his video and dan is not, in fact, referring to this "controversy", but as for now it seems like this and i don't really have anything to say but ughhhhh and why (doesn't he know better)
thank's you were great

fancybum(can i just say i love having serious conversations and having to include people's weird urls it really makes me giggle)
if you want to read about me being whiny and overly sensitive
okay while i love what you've written and i think your thoughts are really interesting, i think it's important to not make blanket statements calling everyone who doesn't agree with you 'painfully stupid', while i've not fully made my mind up on what i believe about dan's sexuality i try to make sure i respect those who have different opinions to me and try not to dismiss them all. as to 'what hurt me' years of people turning my sexuality into a punchline for their jokes
now that that's over, time to offer my opinions that add nothing to the conversation. i think that no matter how he does it, dan confirming his sexuality would be a Big Deal. 'big youtuber confirms his sexuality after years of hoards of people speculating about it on a daily basis' would be big news on the internet, if it was just casually in a liveshow it would obvs be less of thing than if it was like a full on coming out video but it would still be something to talk about.

and i agree that confirmation of their sexuality doesn't mean confirmation of their relationship but not everyone would feel that way. after dan explicitly stating that he's into guys it's then not much of a reach to then assume 'phan is real' and while i don't think they'd lose (many) viewers because of homophobia i do think there's a chance interest in them might dwindle slowly because a lot of people watch dnp because of the mystery surrounding them.or maybe not because a lot of people just love to 'awww' over a cute relationship. either way here's my garbage opinion with no real point :thumb:

Put under a spoiler because giant wall of text - about Dans sexuality, YOI, and Phil's sexuality.
With Dans sexuality I actually ended up having this conversation with a friend of mine who is a very casual D&P fan and isn't invested, she just watches their videos and goes on her merry way. She's straight but she's pretty awesome about LGBT issues. She doesn't ship them, at all. Not even in the slightest, and can't see why I would. Even when I explained why I genuinely do 99% think a relationship is the most likely conclusion and why that is looking ever more likely to me, she didn't see it. She didn't even see the possibility that there was ever any form of sexual tension between them. She thinks they're both straight and keep their relationships ambiguous because it's lucrative and keeps people watching. I think she's coming at this from a heterosexual perspective, and is missing things that I see as so obvious because I genuinely think I'm more inclined to notice them because I'm queer.

If Dan ever did confirm anything, I think it would be less of a Big Thing™ than if Phil did likewise because I think Dan is building up an explicit picture of his sexuality without stating it. Phil isn't. I'd find it interesting if Dan ever said 'while I was in secondary school I started questioning my feelings towards another boy and I got bullied for it' because that would line up with the bullying he's already spoken about. Plus he went to an all-boy school which is something I think needs to be mentioned. At the same time though, he did have a girlfriend from being in year 10/11 through to year 13/upper sixth. So it's also likely that any bullying he experienced was just because school is fucking brutal and sexuality was sadly a popular topic for bullies, even when I was in school. (I'm almost exactly 4 years younger than Dan, I was in secondary school 2006-2011). Regardless, he still experienced homophobic bullying and I would be interested to hear him talk about it in more depth and relate it to being on youtube. I wonder if his bullying plays a part into him being very cautious online, I definitely think it plays apart in his 2012 rants. Bullying is traumatic, and to be in a very risky situation financially after taking a very strong gamble on something that would be financially stable (moving away from Manchester, leaving him fully unable to return to his Law degree) I can only imagine what overt discussion of his sexuality again would do to him. Straight or not, that must have been extremely unpleasant for him to go through. Again.

In relation to YOI i'm so close to finishing it (2 more episodes to go) and I'd like to talk about his discussion of it in two parts, firstly towards the anime itself and then in relation to his presence on the internet.

'Why don't they kiss' I don't really feel the need to go over that again as everything I would say has been said. I don't feel like its anything baiting. I can understand the frustration because it is very subtext heavy, but for me it's very clear that it is not coach/skater who are platonic. Yes I do wish it was more explicit but only because it makes me happy, not because I'm on the fence about their relationship.

Which leads me on to Dan. If Dan can recognise a frustration of will they/won't they in YOI he can surely see the same thing in how his relationship with Phil is perceived. I wonder if he felt comfortable wondering about YOI because our perception of his relationship with Phil is on his mind? Like everything we know about them is based on subtext and I wonder if its bothering him? Though because they are real people they are do not have a story line to follow, which makes me curious if they are actively trying to create a story line for us? I.e. leading up to a coming out (even if that was a 'we're not together Phil is with Sam the surfer and Dan is with Anthony'). Dan overthinks things, and I wonder if his pondering on YOI comes from a reflection of his personal experience?

I wish I could discuss this in depth with Phil but I genuinely feel like there is very little. Dan is more open than Phil, which is why I think any explicit, undeniable confirmation of ANYTHING from Phil would be The Big Deal™. Dan is in a position where he could be setting us up to be comfortable with him being a YouTuber who is queer (not a queer YTer, that distinction is important) and I kinda think thats what he's doing. This doesn't mean #PhanConfrimed, because I think he is doing this in a way that ISN'T that (Watch me be wrong lol). Phil isn't doing that, which would create the bigger shit storm. Don't get me wrong, if Dan explicitly and undeniably mentioned being queer I think that would be HUGE, but it would still be more managed because he has so much subtext. Unlike Phil who is a mystery.

At this point, I honestly feel like anyone who has doubts or believes Dan (or Phil) is straight would continue to have doubts unless it was a big production, main channel, explicitly said video. The arguments have already shifted in the past six months or so - maybe it's old doubters needing to find new reason, or maybe it's just what happens now when new people come into the fandom. Now instead of a flat out 'he liked jlaw, he said he wasn't gay, he must be straight' people start out by acknowledging all the things Dan has said that implies he's not straight and immediately dismissing them. Because queerbaiting, because it was in a liveshow not a video, because it was in a video therefore for the audience, because it contradicts this one tweet from half a decade ago, because fanservice/they're money grubbing/I think everyone lies - all reasons I think anyone stubborn in their way of thinking would just adapt to whatever version of coming out Dan (or Phil) did.

Those are the people that Dan and Phil's current approach of 'live out, don't come out' fail to appeal to and they are rapidly becoming the most vocal minority (during a time when the people who think Dan and Phil are together are just pretty fucking content and therefore seem to have less to discuss heatedly) so I don't really see that changing at all, unless something drastic happened like Dan and Phil got married or announced a relationship. (And even then I think the people who believe they're doing it for fame/money/etc would be undeterred.)

yeah but if they got married it would be only for tax purposes. Can't two men get married and NOT have it be a confirmation that they're together, I mean they run a business together surely at this point its just more practical for them to be married? Gotta get them tax breaks. God you Phan shippers will see confirmation in anything. Buying a house together and adopting a kid? Can't they just be platonic bros who want to raise a child in a stable environment?

the scary thing is is I can see people trying to make that argument

This made me think of something Dan said in an ls after the rebrand

"You are happy when you feel like you're being authentic. If you know who you are on the inside and that is who you are portraying on the outside...It's one of the things that can make you feel at ease. If you feel like the person on the outside isn't wholly reflecting the person on the inside that can be a source of stress and anxiety."

I don’t ship phan but I still don’t believe Dan is straight. I also don’t believe Phil is straight, even though he hasn’t said anything on the matter for ages. But Phil’s last statement regarding his sexuality was that he was bi and he never took that back so that’s what I’m going with. And Dan made it pretty clear in his roast yourself challenge that he doesn’t want to label his sexuality and all his male attraction mentions speak for themselves as well. When it comes to relationships, I don’t want to assume anything until the people involved said they were actually together but it’s different with sexuality. Dan has made it pretty clear that he finds some men very attractive and straight men usually do not do that. So…

I have a question for people who truly believe Dan is straight and just joking: Like, would you be okay with that? Don’t you think it would be really cruel of Dan to pretend to like guys for months, when he knows his lgbtq viewers look up to him? Do you think Dan is that kind of person? This is not meant to attack anyone, it’s just genuinely something I’d like to know. Because for me Dan would be instantly over if it came out he was actually straight and pretending the whole time, like, as a queer person I could not call myself a fan of his any longer if it came out he actually did that.

(Lol, I have a feeling I said something very similar on here before but I can’t find it? Did I? Did I not? Whatever.)

Felix has made a lot of really offensive Hitler jokes in the past. He once dressed up in a nazi uniform for a video, I mean, it doesn’t get much worse than that. So I took the tweet as Dan actually throwing some subtle shade. Felix probably does this for the attention it gets him because it’s oh so edgy. To me Dan’s tweet reads like he’s calling Felix out on that. Like “If we keep the Hitler mentions up, we might make as many as Felix makes one day”, that kind of thing.

I actually kind of like that he tweeted that because it’s the first acknowledgement of Felix’s bullshit we got from either him or Phil. Like, Dan obviously thinks Hitler and the nazi regime are a very sensitive topic, he’s made that clear in the video and on Twitter afterwards. Judging on that he doesn’t strike me as the kind of person who would find Felix’s nazi “jokes” harmless or even funny at all, since he himself is uncomfortable even having a picture of Hitler in his own video. Based on that I’d say, yeah, he’s calling Felix out for using Hitler and nazism as a joke over and over again.

Or maybe I’m reading way too much into it. This was just my first thought when I saw that tweet. Might be you’re right of course but I don’t have Dan down as someone who’d compare mentioning Hitler to anti-semitic jokes. I think it was more about Felix's many nazi jokes lately.

fancybum Wow. Some really great, well articulated thoughts. (And great responses all around). To answer your main question, I think a mention of real life (non-celebrities) male attraction/first time questioning his sexuality during a liveshow would be treated as a medium deal. But this is only based of what part of fandom I surround myself with, which besides here is made up mostly of older teen to very early 20s probably mostly queer girls who are already convinced they are together and would just write shit posts and answer asks like "Can you believe Daniel J. Howell is just out there mentioning..." and just be pretend surprised. I follow them for their amazing gif making skills (and yeah the shit posts and asks are funny, total fandom wank). So I don't know how other parts of fandom would respond. I can't see it reaching publications (online or magazines) from just a liveshow mention, but what do I know?

sparkle I would love to see Dan tackle the topic of bullying (again?). I know he's addressed cyber bullying and mentioned school stuff in some of his videos/skits, plus probably ISG, but has he devoted a full video to the topic?

On a somewhat related note, because I thought about using it as an argument about their stance on privacy and personal relationships and their boundaries with their audience: There was a video available not too long ago, of an interview done with D&P in their first London flat, probably late 2012. The interviewer was male, they were sitting on the sofa and they explained that they didn't want the audience to get emotionally invested in any personal relationships. It was a big "ohhh" moment for me. I shared the link with a friend on Tumblr a few months ago and she too had a "that makes so much sense, it's all coming together" reaction but when I went back, the link I shared with her lead to a completely different video and I searched and search on YT but couldn't find it. Does anyone know what I'm talking about? I should check the DD I know.

Susanisnotafish I'm pretty sure I've read that fic and really liked it, but I'm going to read it again just to be sure! Oh and yes it did get mushy surprisingly fast, I think in future I'll do I couple sucks (because it's fun) and then just eat the biscuit. We started with the original but I want to try dark chocolate and caramel.

I'm looking forward to whatever video Dan has coming our way (hopefully today). My bets are on his half of the Danthony collab, not the Tinder spon, but I could be wrong. Also curious how that topic will be handled in the liveshow tomorrow.

Great Dan quote argo.

Ltrllysusan yep fabric stiffness and drape, as was very evident on Anthony's small frame. But maybe it is actually very soft. Okay I'll shut up about it too. Wait, no, one more thing: I do like the jumper in fan art, because I'm a hypocrite. There, I'm done.

Re. Jumper: I love it. As someone who only has 3 items of clothing I regularly wear, my friends often complain or joke about it. They're often like "You're gonna wear the jumper with the balls or the jumper with the stripes" ...and they're 100% right. Now it's summer I'm literaly wearing only one white shirt 24/7. Oh well. I can relate to Dan, so I love it. He looks cuddly in it.

Re. Nazis: Out of everything offensive Felix has joked about, the Nazi jokes probably annoyed me the least. Felix obviously isn't a Nazi, and just uses it as a joke. Plus, I have a feeling that because it's mocking Nazi's, actual anti-semetics wouldn't be pleased. On the topic of Nazi's, has anyone seen Jack and Dean's Nazi Bar video? It was v funny and left a v good message.

I'm not even gonna bother with the sexuality discussion, I feel like every time I get into it I just repeat everything I've said before and it gets exhausting

thanks for replying, Katka! i hope you're right reading his tone, it's a nicer and easier-to-console interpretation. i didn't much consider it because i didn't/don't really expect them to comment on felix's behaviour any time soon. still, even if it is dan throwing shade i still don't know how to feel about it as it'd still sound to me like taking a topic too lightly; "we're coming for you" is maybe what i'd expect someone to say in a light-hearted tone after catching up on the mentions per vid counter of, say, the word pizza. felix wasn't making harmless #edgy jokes, so i'd say either call him out on it calmly and rationally or be silent, but a tongue-in-cheek callout (how i perceived it) seems misplaced. then again, the bolded part in your response makes me inclined to think i'm misreading dan's tone here.
thank's you were great

It sounds like your talking about an episode of Becoming Youtube, Ben Cook's 2012/2013 documentary series on youtube culture. I can't remember which specific episode it is that Dan and Phil talk about privacy as I haven't watched the series since it was first uploaded (it unfortunately features several youtubers who have since been revealed as sexual predators), but I'm pretty sure I know what you're talking about. Sorry I can't be of more help, I'd attempt to find the specific episode but I'm about to go to bed - maybe someone else will know?

That's what I instantly thought too. If it was Becoming YouTube, autumnhearth it's probably this episode: (Put it under a spoiler as Alex Day is in the thumbnail)
As an aside, everyone else here seems fairly interested in YouTube culture as a whole. if any of you haven't watched Becoming YouTube yet, you really should - it's fantastic. I cannot believe it's been five whole years and that Becoming YouTube 2 never materialised get your sh*t together Ben Cook

Katka I don't believe Dan is straight either so probably not the best person to answer your question, but if he did turn round and say 'haha I obviously don't like men this is all a joke you're so stupid' I'd instantly stop being a fan - I can't excuse that behaviour. I think if it turned out they weren't together (which I'm still on the fence about anyway) a lot of people might cry ship-baiting, which I don't agree with because they are on the whole fairly ambiguous about the nature of their relationship. But Dan particularly has been very vocal about being attracted for men so for him to cry 'no-homo' now would be the definition of queerbaiting, and I think whether you're part of the LGBTQ+ community or not (I'm not), no one should be OK with that.

when i first got into the fandom i thought dan was probably straight but there's a possibility he could be in some way queer. the reason i was able to still watch his videos was because at first i wasn't really here for dan and phil, i just liked the fandom (mainly on idb, the tumblr fans scare me a little and youtube comments are a mess) because of how positive and excited you all were, it just made me happy to see people be so unashamed to be passionate about the things they enjoyed even if other people think its dumb. sometimes you need to just get excited about the prospect of two random white guys getting a dog.

but the more i've watched i've become more interested in them as people so my views have kind of flipped so i think that dan is most likely not straight but i'm not willing to rule out the possibility that he could be. the reason i can still like dan as a person at this point is because of the ambiguity, if he were ever to come out and be like 'everything i said about liking guys was a joke, i'm supes hetero' i would probably stop watching.

tbh as time passes that part of me that insist that he's straight gets quieter so give me like a week and i'll be on here like 'PHAN IS REAL EVERYONE WHO DISAGREES CAN FUCK OFF'

new conspiracy theory: things continue on as they do now, two years, three years, they accumulate savings, they move into a house again, they get a dog, clearly settle down together. suddenly dan puts out a statement claiming that he is straight and always has been and that they don't live together actually and it's all for the views blah blah blah. everyone hates him, phil kinda stops posting too, everyone is mad for ages but it quiets down and they are just not present online anymore.
what really happened though was, they wanted to adopt kids and not have them in the online presence so they made everyone hate them.

If a certain gossip site has shown me anything it's that having lots of people reealllly hating you don't necessarily mean they stop following what you're up to and prying into your life. That would be a very creative approach though lol.

Thanks guys! That's the one! Someone had made a video with just their clips, but must have recently taken it down. I've watched some of Becoming YouTube, but I should come back to it.

Anthony P. video today according to his Twitter. His uploading schedule is "Mon & Fri around noon PST" Maybe, hopefully with Phil? In which case maybe no Dan video today?

Question for anyone who has maybe been following him longer, but was the watermelon emoji there long before the collab?

Do you know what, I think this is my new life motto.

finally got around to watch the gaming video, don't have much to add but i thought it was a good one. maybe not my All-time Favourite One That They Have Ever Done (side-eying dan) but it was funny and had some good moments. i'm also here for phil making most of the decisions; he seemed in such a good and funny mood too (vaseline, "throw in some feminism too...please", strip club rationale). on a sidenote, i loved dan's eyeroll when phil started talking about sam, he must have heard this story a billion times already.

maybe in a parallel universe, phil told the story about how he met tall awkward guy dan three times in airports all over the world on samandphilGAMES my opionion on coincidences is like dan's, but phil is clearly an exception, 100% psychic, and will one day be called on a quest to save humanity.

i actually loved his interpretation of the triple sam, because i think what's often said in such a situation is "ohhh you're soulmates", but he went for the "we're meant to go on an adventurous mission" instead. makes me wonder if phil makes up little stories like these in his every day life for himself.
thank's you were great

This was definitely my reaction to that story as well, so when I saw everyone joking about how Dan should be jealous of Phil's crush on surfer Sam, I was a little confused. I thought it was so telling that in this situation where one is expecting at least a light-hearted, joking "The universe is telling us we're destined to be soulmates!" kind of thing, Phil's mind seemingly immediately went to "the universe is obviously saying: GO ON AN EPIC QUEST TOGETHER!" instead of the obvious romantic angle. (Maybe because the universe already intervened to bring him and his soulmate together despite the distance, so it doesn't occur to Phil that it would bring him another)

Dan's reaction was so funny though, like he was so obviously going through the motions of an oft-repeated conversation, both about coincidences generally, and Sam the surfer specifically. I definitely enjoyed this video a lot, I think it's so adorable that in the video Dan is acting like he's too cool for these kinds of games and is just going along with it because Phil likes them, but then when he told us about it, he obviously actually really loved it (probably because he likes seeing Phil so adorably into things, imo).

(Buffyfiona, I just realized the gif in your signature makes a damn good danthony gif if you cut phil out. )
It's not kickthefire, but I'll take it.

Um.. what. Are you saying you can only watch his videos as long as he's straight?! :sideeye:

Not to speak for iwishiwasacasual here, but I think she was answering Katka's "if you think Dan's straight and just keeps joking about being queer, why would you be okay with that?" question, by saying that even though she mostly thought he was straight, she wasn't bothered so much by his potentially problematic jokes since she was more interested in the fandom itself than Dan & Phil as people. Or something like that. So it's more like she's saying she was able to watch his videos even though he was straight (in her mind).

alittledizzy: That's so true, I actually tried to cut Anthony out of the gif for my signature, but it didn't look as nice. It needs him and his (I think?) arm for framing. :D

yeah this is probably an awkward time to mention this but i am a huge homophobe that is why i choose to spend far too much of my time on an online forum speculating about the possibly romantic relationship between two guys even though the idea of a non-straight person sickens me.

i kid of course, i basically meant what buffy fiona said, but i love to ramble and end up phrasing things in the most confusing way, sorry. tbh i have trouble understanding what i say half the time.
