Just to be clear on what has me fucked up (in a bad way for once): it was not busgate. Busgate can eat a dick, there's no doubt in my mind that they shared that bed. I didn't even mind the way they addressed the bus because it felt tongue in cheek, and as others have said, like a shitpost. Which actually is a clever way of addressing it without addressing it, so fair enough.

It was the hotel room that sunk me. I get it for DITL because the wake-up scene is part of the tradition of the video and lets be real it looked weird AF in the Aus DITL. But there was no placeholder/requirement for it in the doc. Which makes me think they legit stayed apart and makes me think they actually aren't an item. I know others have reasoned why staying apart doesn't necessarily mean that and I know its not a given, but to me its the easiest explanation.

So in summary: if they're together, I'm not gonna be actually annoyed about no-phano-ing. Disappointed? Yeah. A bit salty because of them using it when it suits them and denying the rest of the time? Yeah. But not actually annoyed because its their choice and for various reasons I can see why they'd want to keep it to themselves.

In stark contrast: would I be actually annoyed if they're not together? Hell yes. I'd feel strung along and tbh that's how I feel now, due to the hotel room situation.

I must say, when I was unfollowing and unsubscribing last night I had no qualms unfollowing Dan. But with Phil it felt shit. This comes from an OG Dangirl so I think it says a lot about who is instigating and fostering this behaviour. I used to interpret it as Dan being proud of his relationship with Phil and letting that pride shine (subconsciously or otherwise) even if they're not out. Not so much anymore.

Finally watched both tatinof and the doc: don't understand how Phil is such a bad actor yet I loved him so much on stage, i thought he was really really good, and the doc was lovely in general, even with all those lies hahah

I’m hoping this isn’t too bingo-boardy but I have thoughts after seeing people being genuinely upset about busgate (apologies in advance for how often I say “brand” )

People, like Hank Green in the doc, say they don’t know why D&P have such a devoted fan base. I’d argue that the answer is pretty simple, and it’s mostly due to the idea of Phan. I’m not discounting their personalities, charm, hard work, etc. But their chemistry together and the possibility that it might be True Love draws in and keeps a lot of people that would probably grow bored of other “best friend” pairings. Love stories and mysteries are the biggest themes in fiction throughout history, and the D&P brand offers both. The emphasis, however, needs to be on the fact that it is a brand. Do D&P acknowledge it’s part of their brand? Yes. Is that inherently bad? That’s up to you. However, their brand is not reality.

I think the best example of this is Dan in his live shows. That “version” of Dan, which is arguably the most authentic we’re going to get, is not the same person as when he’s performing, either on stage or in gaming videos, etc. Live-show Dan gets agitated, goes on tangents on topics that he knows most of his audience won’t relate to, and he ignores the fact that Phil is destroying their kitchen and it can be heard clearly in his room. All this to say that when he’s being more “real”, the branding falls away, and that includes being half of Phan. Now, whether you believe they are together or not, I think it will make a lot of people sleep better at night if they remember that we literally don’t know what they do in their lives that they don’t share. And what they do share is cute, and can be read into, but when they’re in full-on brand mode like in Tatinof we’re seeing the show, not the people. And yes, we love the people, but we need to stop pretending we “know” them and their lives because we just don’t. It’s their jobs, after all.

D&P wanted their doc to show two friends who play-fought over a bed. Real D&P talked about watching the whole of Bates Motel while on tour, which would have necessitated a lot of together time in front of a TV, possibly while on a bed. Who knows, really. If it bothers you that what they officially put out doesn’t match even the small glimpse of reality that we get, then I think you need to decide what you really want out of D&P- is it entertainment, or a real life love story. If it’s the latter, you’re probably SOL, because they’re going to keep that part of their lives private.

Feel free to disagree with me, I have just been thinking this for a while and the show performance solidified the dichotomy in my mind.

I'm totally in the "they'll show us the version of them they want us to see so whatever" zone right now.

In addition to the topic of the fascination they have, I think this links very well to what has been said in the last posts on shipbaiting, about them not being the typical crackship that people joke about, but have just the right amount of backstory, chemistry and slip-ups to get people really invested. If it's actually shipbaiting, then it's a subtle and very well-constructed one

but then (it could just be reaching) I thought why on earth would one of the Stars of the show be set up in a suite and the other is some plebs room? And why on earth show that they did not share a room? Why bring it up? The only thing I can think of is that "they know we know they know" crap. About the bus bed I mean. There is no way in hell Dan slept in that bunk while Phil slept like a frickin king in the bedroom. For multiple reasons. SO they know we don't believe that they wouldn't share that bed. They needed to shake those googles of ours. And they did, big time for a lot of us. But there was no way that who ever booked the rooms decided one shall have the crap room and the other the great big suite. I mean that is their job presumably to keep the talent happy and giving one half of said talent a room like "Dan's" then the other half the common folk room, well that just would not fly. I think it was just another DTIL Australia all over again. WE didn't share a room, guys... But they really did share that nice big suite and the other room was a beard.

My googles are shook, but still hanging on. They always are. I am always up in the air, leaning towards they fuckin... I can not imagine that they have never kissed each other, and that thought alone gives me hope.

Maybe they really wanted to drive home the separate rooms one more time for good measure; maybe they stayed apart (that one night), maybe they didn't. Maybe Dan got coughed on one time too many and decided to make use of his better room rather than sneak up to Phil's under cover of night/lack of camera crew; Phil did kind of look like death in that scene. Lots of options in any case.

Wait to see how you feel after the liveshow on Sunday: joint, unedited goodness and probably Dan talking about hanging with his in-laws. Shhh, everything will be fine, you'll see.

I couldn't agree more with everything Lurky has said here. So many wonderful eloquent posts have been made on the subject and all make such good point both emotionally and logically. On a visceral level this one is where my head is at right now. I'm proud of their work ethic and what they've produced, but as a long term fan and phan I'm so pissed off by extra emphasis they put on just how separate their rooms were in that hotel. It feels like despite what Dan schmoozes at the end of some of his live shows that he/they care deeply about their fans, they really don't trust or have any respect for us at all. I think I've reached my cut off point.

I've been a massive fan for so many years, supported them every way I've been able, multiple watches of videos (always without add block), buying merch, voting in all their 'things', even writing (not half as good as others here) some phanfiction (and kickthestickz) for a while.

Even though I did enjoy the show and doc, I still feel kind of empty, grubby and used. Like Lurktacular I've unsubscribed from them both and the gaming channel, and even twitter and insta. I just can't look at them at the moment. Still enjoying being here though and reading what all you lovely people have to say. Complete cold turkey would be too rough.

I have been rewatching my favorite parts of tatinof to really memorize them, and have indepth(tm) thoughts on them

part one - the magic show

I can only watch it on mute because dan talking over it bothers me soooooo much. Why did they make that choice. there is a reason magic is done to silence/music. Its to let you get caught up in the wonder of it all.

I think its really awesome that Chris Cox, who is probably a very busy person, took the time out to teach phil basic magic tricks he could have learned anywhere. What a great guy.

Phil pulling the tape out of his mouth - talk about no gag reflex. In the doc Dan can barely do it without choking, but Phil does it several times between the two movies no problem.

Phil just looks so happy and sweet and natural on that stage. Can he do his own solo show please. Dan who?

When Dan was taking his magic trick away from him the awwwwww from the audience was real. I was there, we all hated Dan in that moment.

1.25 - Dear Mr Director - Phil was right about the 7 seconds of silence that it takes Dil to respond. Its too long. The laggy sims joke wasn't worth it. Learn from Senpai, he always knows best.

Why isn't the director telling him to stop shuffling about and flailing! The best thing you can do on a stage is just stand still. As a stage actor I disapprove.

1.29 Again, phil needs his own show - anything really. Yes, he looks slightly panicked/uncomfortable for most of the show, and maybe he doesn't enjoy the experience as much as Dan does, but boy is he a natural at it if he could just relax a little...

I'm already a big theater nerd (don't think I missed the Book of mormon reference when Phil says Orlando when they are putting the stars on the map, my geeky heart sang) and to combine the internet and theater together, It's pretty much perfect. 1.31.57 FIVE MORE LOOKS from dan before Phil finally looks back on the line where he has been told to lol. A part of me doesn't remember them looking at eachother on this line during my show, that it was only the end bit, but since I may be misremembering so I'll let it slide. I wonder if they had the director in their ear telling them to look at eachother more and that's why dan is doing it so much, but phil just can't manage to do it without throwing himself off count?

1.32.02 -1.32.27 The dance break is the cutest thing ever and needs an award.

1.32.36 Phil is finally looking back at dan during their exchanges.

1.33.11 The girls freaking out - it was all of us there - you could feel the chemistry, the joy, the "we did it" feeling then they locked eyes in the balcony. it was tangible. Yes, that pose is used in musical theater for a reason. it works, but the actors have to really mean it. That look was freakin real af. There were real emotions in that one second of time. It was the one of the two seconds of the show ( the other one isnt on this tape grumble) that made me feel the love.

1.33.47 Through the sparkles you see Dan's face - shining, happy, on cloud nine - then it cuts to phils face, listening for his next musical cue lol.

Re: hotel room situation/#busgate/

It doesn't take a lot for me to doubt (for a short amount of time, then I go back to trash),but this didn't shake me up at all? I was very surprised about the amount of people that started doubting (about their relationship.) Of course they played off the #busgate and the hotel room. Since I have the free trial currently, I'm watching some other youtuber's YTR. I don't care about most of them, and I assume many people are doing the same. So not only will casual viewers be there, but also people that don't even know/care about them. Their brand is still #platonic bros, so of course they made it seem like that.
However, after thinking about it, it almost does seem like a joke for us. At 33:58, it was obvious to a non-casual viewer that they were in the same bed. But would a casual viewer realize that? Probably not. My are staying tightly on.
Another thing is that I didn't see any separate hotel rooms, just a change in location? It could easily be their shared living room. Also, Phil said "You have like 5 bedrooms you're so lucky." Wouldn't they just book the same room then?
Re #busgate: Just no, no. No one believes them.
This is def , but I don't think anyone has pointed this out yet, but 34:09. You know when you're asleep and someone wakes you up and you're only half awake, so you say something or do something not continuously? Whew, it's taken me about 8 hours to get through the TATINOF show/doc posts - well done everyone. It seems THE topic is that people are upset about the lack of a *big reveal* somehow resolving #busgate (presumably providing definite *proof* that they are *together.*) I'm not sure what people were expecting; the doc showed essentially what they've been telling us forever.

Anyway, I have nothing to add to the reviews except for my favorite parts of each program. TATINOF show program: Dan's sweaty face - that boy can't take the heat! Instead of examining Dan's pores, we were treated with the copious output thereof. TATINOF doc program: Dan's butt hanging out of his jeans when helping Phil find his shit - that's some old school Dan flashing! Overall, I think I liked the doc better, probably because of *new* material since I saw the show twice (loved the close-ups though.)

Review of YTR: I watched the show in 4K on a 5K iMac, but sadly YTR couldn't keep the stream ahead of the program, so it ended up buffering in the beginning and the end of the show - annoying. Plus, the video "quality" wasn't particularly great for what 4K can do (YTR's compression technology is not so good apparently.) We have a pretty sophisticated LAN setup here in the loft, and our network connection is 75Mbps and was running perfectly, so -1 YTR / Google / Alphabet - you need to do better to get my monthly sub cheese. I watched the doc in regular 1080p HD on a 55" LED TV via Apple TV, and that streamed fine and looked just about as good as the 4K.

Okay, guys. Guys! I officially have no life I've officially become the first person on IDB (I think) to sit down, ignore every other important work related aspect of their life, and watch the documentary and do time stamps of favorite or significant moments. I know what you're thinking and yes, I am indeed a piece of shit and have two essays due for tomorrow morning and it is indeed 5.30 in the evening.

So, skip over my spoiler if you're not interested in my stupid ramblings where half my time stamps are "OMFG", "WTF" or "PHIRU", I've bolded everything I thought was the most significant though or I thought made for some good discussion. Low and behold, this long, long, long ass post:

General thoughts: I really need a compilation video of Dan making that weird exhale through his nose laugh at something Phil says for no reason whatsoever, he does it countless times, I can’t get over it, it must mean something, like how some people just laugh at whatever someone says because they like them so much because I s2g Dan does this all the time throughout the video

I agree with Catellana, Phil looks really skinny throughout the video, I forget I’m looking at a 6’2 lanky figure instead of a petite man because damn he’s small

The lighting in deppy’s commentary changes a lot throughout the movie as the filter changes and sometimes changes in the middle of them speaking which is very obvious

Dan tongue flicks a lot. Like a LOT.

The generic music throughout is really, really off putting

Final Thoughts:
Fuck bedgate, it can got to hell and stay there. We will never find solace discussing it. Overall I liked the documentary but I think the editing was weird sometimes as if it had a team of editors working on it who consistently changed ideas and used different editing software. I have nothing spoiler-y to say...I just want to say that after worshipping the ground that Dan walks on for a year and not really appreciating Phil as much...oh how the tables have turned after watching both films. I found Dan really annoying and Phil was well, amazing. There was no character, I feel like I really got to know him and I'm so mad that Dan is so dominant on camera.

When I first started watching DAP in 2012, I much preferred Phil. He was cool, a bit weird but totally endearing, and totally mysterious. Dan was a needy, whinge, crude teenager to me. They've both changed a lot since then, but those films reminded me why I used to adore Phil. This year, becoming more obsessed made me love Dan because he's just the one you go for because of his bubbly personality. Phil is more subtle in his humour, but I'm so glad it showed itself more in the films. He is honestly a wonderful, hilarious human being and I'm annoyed that it took me two films to realise it. I am confirmed Phil trash now...I totally get what you were all going about.

I'm so angry, I thought I was gonna hate their stage show but I bloody loved it. I was so, so sure it was gonna make me cringe but it was so lovely and so them. I felt so warm towards them the entire way through it, and that little musical number was adorable. They're so funny, and it was well executed, and it didn't make me cringe! I'm having some feelings, man. Bless their little souls.

#busgate/hotel:

I watched the documentary drunk last night, and I just thought the whole point of that bit was a joke, you know? They made an entire stage show taking the piss out of themselves, I mean, they love trolling. I watched it back sober and it still read as a joke, but idk, maybe I have a drunk filter on it or something. I do tend to veer towards the jolly.

Also lots of couples don't share beds all the time, and lots of friends like to share beds all the time, you know? It's not their sleeping situation that makes me read them as boyfriends

My partner made a good point in saying that the rebrand doesn't start with tatinof and the documentary, they're just the end of old branding.

I'm not sure what people were expecting; the doc showed essentially what they've been telling us forever.

Literally this; they've just done what they've been doing the entire time.

I loved their show and I love them, damn nerds.

I found the whole #busgate situation hilarious and could actually enjoy the bus tour. The first time watching, I was thinking about how they'd resolve the bed "problem" and couldn't appreciate it to full extent. It just seemed like giant trolling to me

For some reason the whole rock paper scissors thing made me laugh so hard, It definitely feels like obvious trolling

I think that the biggest problem with filming TATINOF (I wasnt that bothered by the cringyness) is that on stage, since all the audiance are pretty far from the stage, you need to do a lot of extreme emphasis, to the point where it should look weird from up close. (I was in a play a few months ago and doing this made me really uncomfortable)
Dan is very good at doing this 'emphasis' thing, but it doest reflect very well in a close up film.
phil didnt do as much of this 'projective acting' so I think in the film he looks a lot better. I saw it live and the motions seemed much subtler.
side note: was anyone else bothered by the close ups of dans sweaty face in the TATINOF film, it kind of grossed me out,

a. deps slept on the same bus, different beds - baiting, it's all been lies.
b. deps slept on different buses (they had 3) - how diva, phandivorce, can't even be on the same bus together.
c. deps sleep on the same bus, same bed - no more need for the phan goggles emoji.
d. deps sleep somwhere, somehow, ignoring the situation - no one asks any questions, no one wonders who slept where. the phandom, known for its' restraint.

As for the hotel room, personally when I've been trapped with the same people on a moving vehicle from hell for too long, I start thinking terrible thoughts about them, so getting away is a luxury.

I finally feel like I want to type up my review of Tatinof and The Making Of, now the primary storm has passed.

Tatinof

-First of all, I hate myself for reading tons of spoilers back in gg because damn, the experience will be better if I don't know what to expect. I am such an idiot.

-Second of all, that was so good!!!! I love everything about it! Fav part is probably watching Phil moving because I really like the way his body move, very graceful and pretty. I also like Dan's theatre-ish projection / exaggerated movements, he shines so much.

-I also love the dancing and the singing part. I can see how they have work so hard on that part and it shows. The finale is amazing too

-Nerd Talk: When Phil is drawing Dan like a French girl, the music score used is in fact NOT from the Titanic but a close imitation, which is perfectly legal and a technique used in scoring many movies; but I still think it was clever.

The Making Of

-I really really really love watching the making of movies and this one is perfectly made, imo, except it was too short for my satisfaction. I want to hear the crew talk more. I want to know what the designer think about designing their set, all the little things, about why is this and why is that. Those little things matters to me and there isn't enough of that imo.

-Fav part is definitely Hank Green acknowledging the phandom. It really puts me into perspective about what people think about us and Deppy. I feel like I've been noticed by my super senpai and it feels amazing. To summarise, it is as if I said 'I like Dan and Phil a lot. What do you think?' and Hank said 'I approve. They are nice hardworking people and you are apart of the close-knit very supporting fanbase'

-Least fav part is the absent of full dress rehearsal. Watching them doing it wrong in an empty theatre is really one of my kicks. A bit disappointed, that.

-Music score. The music background from last 5 minutes or so of the making of really hits me with too many feels. It makes me feel that I am so proud of them, that they have managed to come this far, it's the end of an era yada yada and quoting Phil, I feel quite overwhelmed. :')

-I also like all the fans interviews because it puts what said into perspective; i.e imagine you put out contents and your biggest hope is just for people to like you, but you never realise it gives more impact than that, it managed to make other people smile and feels happy. For me, making other people happy makes me happy (and gives this little satisfaction that I actually contribute something) and I imagine that's how they feel about it.

-'Let's go home'.

Tldr; I love them, what a good show, still bummed that I can't see them live.

My friend and I were all set up on Wednesday with wine and waiting to watch the two films - then Google Play fucked up and we just got drunk

I did buy the films yesterday then though and watched them, and I gotta say, I am now even more disappointed they didn't bring it to Europe. I wish I could've seen it live. While I think I would've cringed a lot because of the young audience, the atmosphere looks amazing and seeing something live is always better anyway. So yeah, in the beginning of the show I was so sad about that, I couldn't even enjoy it.
Restarted Tatinof afterwards though and genuinely loved it. There are cringy bits and bits that I didn't actually need to see, but then others were just so great. Loved it!

I loved the doc, too, but I didn't expect more than a making of, so my expectations were low. Don't think I'll obsessively rewatch it as it wasn't THAT groundbreaking, but I still enjoyed it.

This is the type of show that benefits from a live performance. The audience was electric; some that was not reflected in the Dolby Theater show. A better audio mix of the TATINOF show program probably would have helped. Too bad the greedy recording industry was asking too much for the prelude / overture music rights, that would have "set the stage" so to speak...
