Dan was on a podcast, I guess we're back in promo land!

Nothing new really, except that when he shows Phil his work he tells him to scrap 90% of it and only leaves the good parts.

Thanks for linking this! Just finished listening and I really enjoyed it. I found it interesting that Dan could have not mentioned Phil at all, but he did and he described him as “my best friend who I live with and who I’ve worked with quite a bit.” Makes me hope they get married so he can just say husband.

saw someone on twitter say that one of dan's la shows is cancelled, is that true???? i've been hearing that tickets haven't been selling well so i wouldn't be surprised. less dates and even more intimate venues probably would've been better.
It does look like one of the LA shows has been cancelled. He's doing so many shows in California though that I don't think it's a big deal at all, people probably just have more local options to see him this time around. For comparison, TATINOF had 3 Californian shows, II had 2 and WAD still has 5 after the cancelled date. Ticket sales seem to be mostly fine for a lot of the venues I've looked at.

I think people are judging 'selling well' based on 'are they sold out' which - most shows don't. It was a real shocker to most of the youtube community that any of Dan and Phil's first two shows sold out, tbh. Even their peers at the time that were touring and super popular (Tyler, Grace/Hannah/Mamrie, Colleen Ballinger) rarely had sold out shows.interruptfireworks wrote: Mon Aug 01, 2022 6:28 am saw someone on twitter say that one of dan's la shows is cancelled, is that true???? i've been hearing that tickets haven't been selling well so i wouldn't be surprised. less dates and even more intimate venues probably would've been better.
Dan seems to be selling fine. Definitely enough to make a financial profit on the tour (especially when you consider merch sales, which are basically pure profit for him outside of manufacturing and crew cost), just not the numbers of seats sold he got when touring with Phil before.

I agree. Kurtis Conner (youtuber) is currently on tour and he's playing the Chicago Theatre two months before Dan. The ticket sales for that venue look about the same for both of them, and Dan has an extra 2 months to sell some more seats. I think Dan's probably selling as expected, just maybe the promoter booked a couple venues too close to each other.alittledizzy wrote: Mon Aug 01, 2022 1:27 pm Dan seems to be selling fine. ok i'm back.
So I genuinely liked this a lot better than him pretending to react to things like last week, it felt more authentic and was actually funny. But I find the way he relies on a screen during most of his routine... interesting? I've seen it done before and visuals can really give a show something extra, but it's not about that. It's about what it reminds of; online content. Ranking stuff, laughing at weird AI, exposing twitter drafts... those are all popular formats for internet content. Y'know, like YouTube videos. So what we have here is Dan, a YouTuber (or so he says I guess), taking ideas best suited for online video and putting them on a stage.
Phil made this exact video last year, so one can't help but compare a bit. Both are good versions of the concept. In fact, they're not much different just with an added element audience interaction, and what would usually be video editing is now Dan clicking next slide. And like I said the result is fine, but that's just it. Nothing about Dan's stage version elevated this format. It wasn't any better or worse, and I'm not under the impression it was supposed to be. So I just don't get why? What's the (Power)point bad pun sorry of doing this on stage rather than on YouTube?
I do get that Dan is forever a theater kid who loves being on stage so that's where he wants to be. But previously we may have thought Dan wasn't really interested in making this type of content because of his ~high quality content treshold, but apparently he is when it's not online? I know we're never gonna get regular video content creator Daniel Howell back, but 'Dan doing Youtube videos on stage' wasn't quite what I expected from his Big Return. And I think I would've rather had this as a normal (second channel) YouTube video like a year or so ago, than as part of a comedy show.
I hope the actual full touring show will have a little more going for it, because so far I'm a little bit whelmed. Dan may have 'returned' to YouTube, but with this it's looking like he won't be sticking around if he gets other opportunities again. Which I also can't entirely blame him for but

I think ultimately it was just a fun casual show during pride month to raise money for Mermaids. Internet guy that loves performing live bringing relevant internet content mixed with standup to people that enjoy and know him for that seems like a winning combination to me. Just a guy in his element hanging out with people and making them laugh in real-time. Everyone who attended looked so happy and seemed to be having a great time. I think that's the point, actually, and if We're All Doomed also achieves that I think it will be a great success.
Someone asked Dan on twitter about how he said he was thinking about uploading one of the segments to his main channel but didn't and he responded with "don't worry there has since developed PLANS and shenanigans for before i hit the road" and now I'm super curious as to what it could be!

I feel like such a grinch with their last few videos. I enjoyed this one better than last week’s, but I still found myself reaching for my phone after a couple of minutes and half-watching the rest of the video. I’m just not a huge fan of that kind of content and, going by II especially, I wouldn’t be surprised if WAD does have a good amount of this. That said, being in a crowd and having that kind of energy around you does make a huge difference. I didn’t get to see TATINOF or II live, but I did get to go to SNL once and I imagine it’s a similar experience. At the time, everything was absolutely hilarious and it was the best show ever. Watching the episode back though, it was objectively not a great one but the atmosphere made it amazing live. That’s kind of what I’m expecting to get from WAD as well; some parts that I’ll love mixed with some parts that aren’t my thing, but the general excitement of seeing him in person to make those parts a great time too.
This is very interesting! With his first tour date only ~5 weeks away, it sounds like we'll be getting even more content very soon!anna_begins wrote: Tue Aug 02, 2022 1:49 am Someone asked Dan on twitter about how he said he was thinking about uploading one of the segments to his main channel but didn't and he responded with "don't worry there has since developed PLANS and shenanigans for before i hit the road" and now I'm super curious as to what it could be!

Does anyone know what WAD will be about? The SOHO shows were a stand up "comedy" routine with some memes thrown in, but the promo videos he's been putting out for WAD paint a completely different picture from the SOHO shows. What does the end of humanity have to do with tier lists of childhood crushes?Catallena wrote: Mon Aug 01, 2022 10:39 pm I hope the actual full touring show will have a little more going for it, because so far I'm a little bit whelmed. WAD is going to have far less gay content I believe, this was a gay themed event for pride. So hopefully no tier list of crushes.

Double posting like a bad little IDBer, but...
What if dnp brought back stereos prior to dan going on tour. Or even WHILE dan is on tour? They were so sweet, so intimate, and such great content for folks that love them together. And they're quite low effort and it seems like phil might need some low effort content these days.

I think the SoHo shows were put together with a pretty short notice, which is why he probably gravitated towards video-like content. It feels familiar, it's what he knows, he might have had these ideas for videos but made them I to a stage thing instead.
The difference is that you can see how he totally thrives on stage with the direct feedback. He has always talked about his quality threshold thing in regards to how he thinks people will respond, and on stage he gets that immediately. He can riff off people's reactions, add a joke here and there depending on the response, and you can tell that he has a lot of fun with that.
I do believe WAD will be different, it's doomed themed for one, but knowing Dan it will be quite gay, quite horny and have some visual element. That's just his style and what he does best.
Ps remember that bit in the tatinof doc where they've just gotten off stage and they go "I think we did it"? Dan's face is a sweaty ball of absolute joy. That is why he's going on tour again.

Oh, please let them bring back Stereos or similar...!
It's true that we don't really know what We're All Doomed will be about or even how it will look, but a lot of comedians will do small intimate shows in order to test material before going on a tour. That's why I think the Soho shows were at least a trial run for some general elements we'll see back in WAD. I don't think a lot of actual jokes will also make it into WAD, because obviously there are different themes and these were shows for Pride. But I think we'll definitely see that visual element again (perhaps in a fancier way than just clicking a remote though), and I really hope he can do something more with it other than YouTube Videos On Stage. I know he loves being on stage and I'm very happy for him that he gets to do it again (and I'm equally as happy for Phil that he gets to stay home in that fancy ass house because he's nowhere near as into this shit and probably over it), but personally I want something a little more creative from him than this.
Stereos would be so nice! I still have that dysfunctional ass app on my phone just in case. I'm curious as to why there's been zero joint content so far this year compared to last year and I do hope we get something before Dan goes away but ngl I'm keeping any expectations looooow. (though really ticket sales could always use a boost)
btw idb has no rules against double posting as long as it's not spam
Yeah I didn't see TATINOF live since it never crossed the North Sea, but I did see II and while it was exciting to see them and stuff, even during the break I was like 'uh well i hope the second half is better' (it was lol) so yeah definitely expecting more of that for WADshan wrote: Tue Aug 02, 2022 2:36 am I didn’t get to see TATINOF or II live, but I did get to go to SNL once and I imagine it’s a similar experience. A little Dan interview:

I especially like this quote about how northerners are funnier

I especially like this quote about how northerners are funnier
“I actually think northerners generally have a better sense of humour. When you’re in London, people are a bit too self important, a bit too cynical, trying to be cool. Up North, you get people laughing and having a good time. Anything I can say as a Londoner who is miserable stuck here down south laughing at myself, they’ll go yeah that makes sense.”

I found this bit interesting:
Daniel is currently building the set for the show. “I’m always trying to build a tower up to God, just to say hello to the people at the back,” he explains, “and also fill as much space up as possible because even though I’m a very long man, when it’s just you in the black expanse of the theatre box, it’s scary.”
And now I'm super curious to see the end stage design.
Omg I need to know if there'll be special guests for all of the shows or just certain ones?? I'm now desperately manifesting TwoSet for his Australian shows.
