Yes, it could be as simple as that.

trashqueen wrote:oh god, never thought i would say this but let's go back to the nail polish drama, i cannot believe in the year of the lord 2016 i'm seeing someone call dan straight, end my life
let's use some basic deductive reasoning, on his diss track:
dan said he doesn't identify with the labels society tries to get him to use (it's up to interpretation if he's referring to all labels or some)
straight is the default label The Straights™ love to force on people since the moment they are born
therefore dan is not straight

there, no reaching, absolutely no reaching at all, 0 reaching, none, plain and simple communication!

does that mean he's gay or bi or any label? nope, not at all, that literally can't be taken as a fact unless he says it. does that mean he's definitely not straight? yep!

and since apparently you have some kind of fixation with bringing up phan out of nowhere: does that mean he's fucking phil? obviously not, believe it or not lgbt+ people manage to have platonic friendships, i know shocking

danisnotonphil wrote:And yes, i can honestly tell you the way he talks about men can very well be platonic or from admiration, no reason for everything to be sexual, aesthetic attraction is a thing too. Btw no, is not mostly to say phan is real, even if that's a big part of it, i understand some people kind of project themselves on dnp too, for representation and all that.
You're right. And the way he talks about women is also all platonic and admiration from aesthetic attraction. Look at this platonic part of his Diss Track where he admires Jennifer Lawrence and Evan Peters' aesthetics while lying in bed topless.

As a lesbian I project myself on Dan so much and think he is really a lesbian. He even said it before by calling himself a 'tall lesbian'. Because that's how it works. The debate is over everyone. You can go home now.

Now we are all done with the jokes. danisnotonphil please explain why Dan's male attraction mentions are only aesthetic and platonic and whatever. And do it without being heteronormative. It's tough right? Almost like it is impossible? You can have a few months to try to think of a way. Or even forever because it is tiring and boring to see this nonsense.

It's great that you're all so passionate, but just remember to keep it nice when you're debating with each other. I've read some posts that are low key aggressive and that's not on. EVERYONE is entitled to their opinion, be it a differing one to yourselves. Carry on with your discussions though as it's nice to see some activity in here, but just play nice
I didn't think I'd care about the nailvarnish tbh but no lie, I swooned hard when I saw it (my phone literally died 5 minutes later). It reminded me of when I was 16 and fell in love with Brian Molko, I'm all here for the black nails. I hope he does it again it holds nothing more to me than painted nails though so can't add anything further to the discussion. I just don't care enough about his or Phils sexuality, sorry.

I'm not sure if it's the time zones but this tour seems to have flown by, how is it almost over already? Just a few shows left, I thought it would drag but it really hasn't. Can they please hurry up with the next announcement though, we need to book flights etc.

Gotta say, this danisnotonfire forum has been a wild ride last night. Interesting to chatch up on, indeed. Couple of quick points:

1) There is a queer male culture set up on YT. It's hardly revolutionary, but nail polish has become a part of its fabric for the past year. I don't know Dan's intentions, but it is an interesting thing for me to examine that he'd, at the very least, not care to be connected to it, as some people will undoubtedly do.

2) And yeah, nail polish on guys is not a revolution. I don't know why "not a revolution" should be equated with "nothing" though. There are parts of the world where even something so small might still be a big deal, and because of his reach, he might normalize that in those people's eyes. (No, really, try being a dude walking around with nail polish in rural Russia. The world is bigger than your back yard & the culture you grew up with. And often, I feel like when we say "it's not a big deal", the underlying message is "it's not a big deal to me and my surroundings, therefore the rest of people's realities don't matter.") And Dan's hardly a pioneer, but being even a small player in raising a generation that thinks gender expression defying the status quo is either entirely fine or even cool - that's a very nice thing in my eyes.

3) And yeah, there is certainly an issue of fetishizing traditional femininity in particularly queer white men that connects to fandom culture. But I feel like that conversation can be had without dismissing everything good about it, too.

4) Straight is also a label, not a default state of being.

5) I really enjoyed the way Dan went about his nail polish experiment. On his terms, fitting his style - very nice indeed, despite me having been sligthly over it before it even happened because of all the #drama connected to it.

This is what I was trying to say, in my own dramatic, overly passionate and jokey way

I wasn't using the term 'revolutionary' to mean it had never been done before - obviously people have been dressing as the "other gender" throughout history. I was using the term revolutionary to try and connect the act to it's wider implications for attitudes towards gender in society. Being part of a process of normalizing breaking gender norms is being part of a revolutionary process in my opinion.

Just dropping in again to try and hammer what these two are saying home. Yes, men have been wearing nail polish as a fashion statement for a long time. Yes, Dan has not smashed the patriarchy overnight, but is it commonplace? Could one of the lads go for a cheeky nando's with a nice holo gel finish without being torn apart? Absolutely not.

It is not seen as normal for men to wear nail polish. It might be in the niche circles that we move in, but for the majority it is still seen as questionable. Hell, the reaction that Dan's 2 hour nail polish adventure have gotten should show you that; if it was seen as "normal" (whatever that bloody means) for men to decorate their fingernails, no one would have batted an eyelid.

Everything exists in context, not just in the sphere of our perception. Now I'm not denying that there is also some fetishisation of feminine white guys going on, or that he might well have done it to get the phandom off his back, but that does not change the fact that Dan was raised in a society that made him very uncomfortable with the idea of wearing nail polish and has now risen above that, put on his choir robe, and rocked it.

A huge reason that I enjoy Dan and Phil is that they have had a very visible process of going from being embarrassed by their femininity in a world that mocks it vehemently, to embracing it and accepting that they're never going to fulfil the archetype of masculinity. They both reject that stereotype in their own ways; this example is just one of the more obvious ones. I dig it, I dig them, and I dig you.

I'm a couple days late, but timestamps for the Australian DITL! Maybe grab a snack or a cup of coffee first. Find a comfortable seat. Settle in.
Weirdest fucking thing, my video skips straight to 1:19 in and just won't back up no matter what I do. Oh well, must not be anything of note there.

1:40 - Dan's hand to the face is so cute.
2:04 - I love the reflection of Phil recording Dan that you can see in the Hungry Jack's window.
2:13 - "Touch the Adelaide balls." Dan has that look on his face, the same one was the 'Phil, STOP' from the Pokemon video. Does Phil just have a ball fetish? Is he obsessed with balls? Does he follow Dan around their flat making ball jokes? Does Dan wake up to Phil casually gropin- hey timestamps that's what I was doing yeah okay back to that.
2:20 - Dan's physicality here thrills me. Full body shots, give them over, give them all.
2:21 - "It's a metaphor for something, but I don't want to think about Adelaide is trying to say there." It's trying to say it just thought you preferred holding balls.
2:55 - I wonder if Phil wanted to stand there or Dan told him to.
3:03 - I like that their snack run was an actual snack run.
3:10 - I think Phil held one out for Dan but Dan reached over him and took one himself.
3:27 - I want to try iced honeycomb milk.
3:39 - They make fun of Phil's hands and gestures a lot, but there's something really to that right? Phil said once he broke his hand, I wonder if that has anything to do with it? Or he just can't move his fingers in certain ways?
3:43 - Pausing at the exact right moment here gives Phil the most strange but appealing expression, pursed mouth and not quite looking at the camera.
4:00 - Phil with his head tilted down and his eyes canted up and two fingers delicately wrapped around something he's sucking on - I mean, wow, timestamps. Moving on.
4:05 - Watching him shove the whole thing in his mouth was kind of satisfying, since there were no crumbles or dribbles.
4:20 - Dan's voice sounds so rough. I want to tuck him into bed.
4:27 - Mystery contact lens solution bottle in bg. (ty Ticia for pointing that out.)
4:53 - Phil teasing fondly. Dan smiling fondly back, with that look on his face like he wants to say something but he's just not going to.
5:29 - Man, they really like telling each other to stroke things in public.
5:38 to 5:55 - This whole bit just makes me imagine them side by side on their sofa back home or a hotel room bed obsessively reading koala facts and Dan reading up on the experience so he knows exactly what to expect and reading it all out loud so Phil does too.
6:18 - Oh god they're so excited, what is this weird squeezing feeling on my heart.
6:30 - "The fact that he's eating shows that he's comfortable." "Same." lmao I missed that the first time around totally. Nice one, Dan.
6:48 - Phil agreeing that Dan looks swaggy in his jacket. When Phil says "Take it home." his voice is so sweet and genuine Phil, soft almost. This is one of those very small natural interaction moments. (Or Phil was just secretly making plans for koala/handler furry roleplay back home.)
7:20 to8:20 - Look, everyone died over the koala holding, I don't need to give a play by play of this.
8:22 - Dan asking about chlamydia. When she answers she specifically tells Dan it can't spread between humans. MmmHMM. This takes me back to being so interested in how people who don't know them percieve them. (Not that her response indicated she thought they were a couple, but it was just enough of a pause for consideration.)
8:35 - Martyn in the background laughing at Phil.
9:04 - Oh god that split second of Phil smiling. Why jumpcut so fast away from that?!
9:16 - "If Dan was a koala." This is a joke they make so often that it makes me imagine Dan really does like curling up quiet places a lot.
9:53 - Leaaaaning innnn sooooo clooooooose.
10:06 - Their little laughs when the dingo is jumping up on the handler.
10:15 - Who is making that little 'arrararar' noise?
11:13 - Phil is so delighted with himself.
11:23 - The noise Phil makes when Dan is rejected by the kangaroo.
11:35 - "Than feeding a horse." Dan's cute little embarrassed laugh.
12:14 - Phil's bouncy little run.
12:46 - a) Manager Marianne hiding behind a bush to get out of shot. b) Cornelia being fantastic and adorable even when barely in the shot.
13:09 - It's gonna wanna mate with you. Be honest, Phil: you're that person who looks up animal mating on youtube, aren't you?
14:17 - Dan pulling the "there's a spider on your head!"
14:19 - Phil filming naked male torsos again. How many times does he have to do this before people pick up a trend there?
14:41 - "That classic three wolf moon aesthetic." Dan's total commitment to cheesy tourist shirts is so admirable.
15:13 - Phil with the snacks. This moment reminds me of those liveshows when they'd be in the same room and Dan would just turn his laptop around and show Phil.
15:23 - a) Dan making up his own weird little songs. b) Phil filming Dan when Dan isn't paying attention.
15:32 - Phil's "What are you wearing?" is in that nice Phil voice.
15:51 - "Your mum." and those dumb laughs.
16:04 - "Look at it! Look at Dan!" I mean the koala is probably supposed to be the draw there but ok Phil I see your priorities.
16:12 - Mystery contact lens solution bottle in bg.
16:24 - What is that head tilt, Dan.
16:30 - Dan's laugh going so high.
16:36 - Dan's "We're just going to post it to her, no explanation?" and then saying it's ok if Phil does bc it'll be "in our memories forever."
16:42 - Phil's "Don't do that!" is like his version of the "Phil, stop!" - It's domestic, but not ~domestic for show.
16:54 - I love how they're sitting on the bed.
17:06 - Presenting.
17:10 - I like that Phil wanted to film Dan, just because Dan was in a strange position, I assume?
17:15 - Phil is so calm but so fond.
17:26 - Well, they didn't give any fucks about people knowing what hotel they stared at there. Not that it would matter since they'd have already been well gone by the time the video went up.
17:33 - Phil calling Dan's personality 'sassy and daring.'
17:31 - Watching anime in bed while the eat. It's like they just tried to take home with them.
18:02 - I actually love that they picked emu and dingo. Did they go with the animals they felt most representative of them? Emu!Phil, I can see it.
18:09 - Mystery contact lens solution bottle gone.
18:31 - Seriously, Dan's voice just sounds so bad. I feel like he seemed to be getting better their first couple weeks in Australia but he's flagging again health/energy wise.
18:25 - Enjoying the rainy city view.
18:40 - I'm mourning that they don't do a real tour day in the life, but I hope the documentary contains elements of that.
19:01 - Dan's eyes are so red. Sleep, Dan. Sleep.

Thank you! I need to go back and watch the video again, definitely. I wasn't really paying attention when I watched it because I was freaking out over the beginning (which you mysteriously can't watch... ;)). My friend thought it would be funny to tell me to watch the video in a "phan mindset", but it just launched me into a full on what-the-fuck-what-game-are-they-trying-to-play crisis

I'm such a terrible viewer I like watch and laugh and notice absolutely nothing if DNP was a tv show I'd be that person surprised with fan theories bc I can't remember an entire season. 18:02 was the only thing I recall entirely because I thought it was so cute and was totally mad I couldn't see the effect on camera :'(
Thank you for the post!! I didn't remember them watching anime I absolutely need to watch this again

Dan was raised in a society that made him very uncomfortable with the idea of wearing nail polish and has now risen above that, put on his choir robe, and rocked it.
Very well put

If the Fine Bros really loved us, they'd put together an emergency Dan and Phil React to Onision Talking About Genuinely Wanting Dan in a Romantic Way. I just want to see Phil's face go terrifyingly blank and Dan nervously laugh.

Really not a fan of Onision given what I've heard about him/the videos he makes, I'm not sure Dan should/would be too happy to know he was part of this guy's sexuality realisation... :? :? :?

In terms of the actual content of the video, I can't help but roll my eyes when I hear people say that they're 'heterosexual but biromantic' or vice versa (and it does usually tend to be vice versa).

Imo using terms like that just normalises internalised homophobia, cause there are so many guys out there (for example) who have sex with men and don't have any issues with that but they would never consider dating a guy, that would freak them out. So it kind of rubs me up the wrong way to see people acting as though that's a valid sexuality

im sorry for going further with the offtopic but yeah I agree
[offtopic]I didn't watch the whole video I stopped at the mention of porn so I'm sorry
but split attraction has been bringing more harm than good (when not used by people that are asexual but want romantic relationships) I'm sad tbh. I don't want to get deep with compulsory heterosexuality talk but yeah many people go through this to only realise they were just clinging to a bit of "normality"/dealing with internalized homophobia OR he really is warm towards guys and interprets that as romantic. ugh I'm almost discoursing it's just this has been talked about so many times there are a lot of posts out there explaining why the split-attraction model is homophobic if anyone is interested :/[/offtopic]
