Dan & Phil Part 4: The Cheekiest Link

But for the geography video I stand by what I said I thought it was terrible. The title was very bad but I thought it actually could be ironic like a wink to all the terrible videos, "British people talk about American school" "British people try American school lunch" or wtv but the content of the video wasn't ironic or tongue in cheek at all, so the title was just normal click bait.
The chemistry that we saw in tipsy talk wasn't used at all since Phil didn't interact with Hazel at all or "incorporate" her in the video (not sure it is the right word). It literally could have been anyone he did the quiz with because he bland-washed her so much (and I really dislike Hazel but i don't think she is bland). The concept was mediocre, no effort went into it (printing a map of the USA is not effort), the video felt rushed and forced, the editing was sub-par. Nothing about it was good imo.
Also it is more of a personal pet peeve i guess but it annoys me when people show their uneducation on one subject and make it look like it's hilarious. I am not American and I don't know where all the states are either. I don't care that Phil is bad at American geography and it doesn't make me like him more or less but it just annoys me when people act like "ho look I know nothing about this subject LOLzor how funny!!!"

I'm so surprised that so many of you are saying that your phandom experiences feel a bit more Dan-centric! Like before I joined (which was only a bit over 3 months ago, granted, so I don't have much experience to base this on), that's what I'd assumed would happen, but really, it's felt really balanced to me. Which might be a lot due to who's on my Tumblr dash - hella lot of Phan stans who talk about them mostly as a unit, and then both Dan and Phil stans. The Dan stans, if anything, are those who more often than not complain that they can't say things about Dan without Tumblr making it about the both of them.

Tumblr is the kind of place where you can craft your own experiences based on who you follow, which makes it both good (because obviously, you follow who posts things you like) but also gives you a really weird skewed view of what fandom is since you're isolated to just the parts you have specifically chosen to see. People's perceptions can be so different just based on what corner of tumblr they see most often. It's definitely one reason I like a forum setting more! You get exposed to everyone, even people whose opinions you don't agree with. (Which is really healthy, imo.)

I'm probably guilty of not sharing as many analytical thoughts on anything, just because I tend to brain dump that kind of stuff on people in private conversation or not have time to gather my thoughts until the topic has moved on. (And when the topic is a Phil video, it's moved on from quickly.

But, for anyone who wants my thoughts on Phil's Tipsy Talk video - here we go. Some of it has definitely already been mentioned in here.

I was surprised that Phil would even agree to do Tipsy Talk because I don't see him being overly comfortable with any situation on-camera that involves him potentially having lowered inhibitions and tbh as a result the video itself was boring, definitely far from one of Hazel's best Tipsy Talks, but the chance to observe Phil so blatantly being controlling was worth it. He had her come into his territory, his safe space. He made the drink, so he ensured he wouldn't be getting more alcohol than he actually wanted in it. He had props there to distract from any topic that might take him somewhere he didn't want to go in the conversation. He even basically started out interviewing her, and I'm not sure she even really noticed.

Hazel's genuine fondness for him also makes the video more endearing to me, even when the conversation is boring. I think she means it when she says that she loves how his brain works, that he is the best person, etc. Short of his video with his mother, Dan, or his really old videos with other friends, it's the closest I can recall to seeing Phil interact on camera with someone who came to know him outside of a mutually-beneficial-for-views situation.

Phil talking about his parents and their parenting tactics... I think his mother is probably just as weird as he is. I wish we saw more of Martyn, I'd like to know if Phil got more of the strange humor genes.

I do think he had a go at editing it either before she did, or he had her send it to him to proof before she did final edits. The jump cuts were not as natural as Hazel's normally might have been, but obvious in that way Dan and Phil have sometimes when they sacrifice smooth editing for keeping something off camera.

Why I love the death part: Because a) she didn't even have to ask, he clearly watched some backlog of her Tipsy Talk so as soon as she referenced a recurring theme he knew exactly what it was, and b) He had an answer already prepared, and c) that moment of genuine discomfort/possibly exasperation when she pressed the issue further and he admitted death made him uncomfortable. It made me think of how he acted during the confession roulette video at certain points.

- 5:30 ("Of course you would. You'd cash in, wouldn't you?")
- 6:29 (Stumbles over "I love being alive." then obvious jump cut, then the joke about watching Buffy with friends before redirecting back to robot talk.)
- 7:15 ("You can plug stuff. Not that you need to." Reminiscent of her earlier remark about cashing in, Hazel's recognition of their status but lack of intimidation by it makes me like her. She shades the phandom, without seeming like she's shading Dan or Phil for achieving that status.)
- 7:30 (Talking about how he adjusts quickly, maybe supporting evidence for the idea that he adapted to Dan being the only person he's around - that Phil isn't the natural introvert homebody Dan is, Phil just adapted to what made Dan comfortable.)
7:35 ("I will have Dan." most obvious jump cut ever.)

Loved this. And I totally agree with you on it all.
I also think that Hazel does appreciate and understands how Phil's mind works. Not many people can say that, which can make some collabs feel a bit awkward. This one didn't suffer from that, because she was actually able to react to it nicely, which was nice to see.

I've been really enjoying the combination of both. Like discussion is fun, and IDB certainly gives you more space to do that in a way that doesn't feel like just talking into the void, but I also just really love celebrating stuff I love with people I love who love it in the same ways that I do.

But no forum or a dash board can give you an idea of the whole fandom, like there's mad amounts of people around, there's like this huge Twitter-based one and IG-based one and then Tumblr and then forums like this one which are slightly more mature than what you get on Tumblr and it's both amazing and kind of weird - but I really can't imagine having all of those impulses directed at you. Which is yet another reason why I could never be a Famous Clown™. (which is a quote from the Youtube Culture song, not my opinion on YTers, for the record. )

That's such an interesting thought, that Phil had either pre-edited it or had a say in how she did. Is that common practice around YT? I now feel like I need to rewatch old Tipsy Talks and focus on how she edits, but yeah - it does flow more, generally, isn't as filled with jumpcuts, she likes dramatic silences. Huh.

Yes completely agree. I think the title was one of the reasons why I didn't like the video. It was a complete clickbait title. It didn't even roll off the tongue.

Phil has made better videos (even this year) and this was really just meh. Tipsy Talk was great but his videos just didn't match up to it. It was exactly the same with Caspar. The exclusive interview was funny but Phils video was again just meh.

I think we talk about Dan more on IDB because he is like an open book. He really gives himself away more especially in livehsows. Phil doesn't really give us anything. If his video isnt that great and gives us nothing to talk about of course we are going to move on quickly.

Like tonight is Dan's liveshow, so we are going to be talking about Dan again.

Tumblr to me is a completely different experience. It is just looking at pretty photos and funny gifs. (I do follow most Dan blogs on their though so it is a pretty dan-centric place for me because he is just too beautiful ) here we can constructively criticise both of them.

Blame the shitty way languages were taught in the UK (still could be, for all I know.) I was taught the same, it wasn't until I spent time in Germany that I knew better! - Nobody gives a flying ... until KS4/post 16/"college"/A Level, when you actually get any amount of say in what you study.

Rant. Don't read if not interested

Waaah... I can't stand reading 10 pages of people saying Phil's video is boring. I don't know what people expect from D&P since I just started watching their videos this year. I don't expect "ground breaking" videos from Phil especially if he's still in his AP persona but if I need a video when I am too stressed out with world I will watch his videos including this one. I am not a fan of Hazel's voice and I also wish to see fetus!Phil but you know... Waaaaaaah I can explain my disappointment. I can say I am good with world geography but US is really confusing, you know. I even work as support for NA. Well maybe because I am new so I'm still not bored (except for DAPG. They should seriously play more exciting games. It's such a waste.) But more than those who comment "meh", it hurts to see most people who just totally dismiss Phil's video. Ugh. This is really a Dan-centric fandom. Oh well. As they always say, to each his own.

its not even the fact that dan gives opinions or things to analyze(he does more than phil for sure) but what people want to analyze. Anything phil says goes over the heads of dan fans because they dont care. Phil fans(they exist) will contribute to the dan discussion. Its just this: dan fans are more loud and expressive/obsessive like dan himself.

D&P can make the same video/comment/tweet but people will spent 5pages analyzing only dan. The quality critics will only judge phil for challenges/tags/reaction videos because dan creates breathtaking content. . Both dan and phil made comments about cute boys(its a tumblr post i cant find now but they said basically the same thing in their own ways) in their anime video but only dans was important and was treated like a true coming out. They were both spon videos but only phils had the harsh critics lash out on him for the #ad, dan was shirtless and fondled a pillow so we ignore it. Phils last video had a clickbait title but dans anime video thumbnail was the best thing happened to the phandom the last 2 years.

I went to watch more tipsy talk, some goes deep, some very small talk ish, but none of them feel like this one, the contents are chopped into small pieces while distract by the interviewee's persona. Not even in the Amy Schumer one. Phil has a firm control i will give him that. It feels more AP than hazel.

That does make me want to see the real life power dynamic between deppy. From what i can see, most of times Dan is controlling and Phil is following, but when Phil wants to be in control, Dan is just willingly submit to him. Quite a daddy&mommy dynamic imo.

but people werent happy with phils video because it still felt very much like an ad video, whereas dans was a standard, higher quality than usual dinof formula video. dan's video had a lot of what people had been saying for ages that they missed, so people were happy, whether or not it was a spon, and the crunchyroll placement itself was minimal. i didnt even watch phils video, so this isnt even my horribly biased opinion, its based off of what other people said about it; it was fine, but it wasnt great, so the ad part felt more obvious. dans was one of his better received videos, so people didnt mind as much (actually, plenty of people complained saying dan only made 'good' content when he was getting a higher pay but )
spon videos only really get criticised here when they feel like forced ads, or the content itself is bad and obviously just rushed, or the thing theyre making a video for isnt something theyd actually use irl

I just want to say that just because I (and anyone else) didn't like the new Phil video doesn't make me like him any less of a person. I have pretty low expectations for both of them, so it's pretty rare I find that I can't watch through the whole video. You can't enjoy everything a person puts out. My favorite video by him in these past few months was the Sleepless Night video, by far. I like his solo content and content with Dan (yeah yeah, I know), I'm just really not keen on his videos with these other people. I really didn't like the PJ collab and the new Hazel video, the Caspar video was a little bit better but still, not my cup of tea. I just didn't see any chemistry or interesting conversations between them.

Re: Alchohol

So I fit into the category of the underage American teen who is wary of alcohol, which may seem odd to some of you guys, but I'll try to explain as best as I can.

For me when I was growing up, my family never drank in front of me. I went about 8 years without knowing what alcohol was. I guess for me, the one time I saw alcohol was when I was at my babysitter's house, and her father was an alcoholic. He was the poster child for the alcoholic father figure that you see in movies. I just remember being extremely terrified of him, and kind of attributing his scary and yell-y complex to the beer bottles strewn around the yard.

To answer the question; alcohol (atleast where I live) isn't really seen as a good thing. When you think of people that drink alcohol you either think of the underage highschool kids that smoke pot or the abusive parents, not just someone who has a wine to relax them after work. I'm sure if I lived in a culture where everyone had a glass before bed or at the dinner table, I wouldn't have a problem with it. It really depends on the experiences you have with it early on that decide whether or not you're wary of it.

with regards to this being a Dan-centric fandom, I dunno man... to me it's always seemed pretty balanced because I think most of us/tumblr etc. are invested in the both of them, but personally I do find Dan more interesting to talk about? he just gives us a lot more to go on (and from what I've seen I think criticism and praise is also pretty balanced for the both of them. neither of them will get away scot-free with making subpar videos)

I've said this before but whilst I like Phil a lot, his 'persona' (or whatever we wanna call it) on his own youtube channel and generally in collabs I pretty much can't stand or just find super boring. his live shows I can't watch at all because for me they're just an empty 45 minutes where he somehow manages to never give an opinion on anything. there are glimpses of a more real Phil that I love whenever we get them, but for me I need more of those (maybe I'm greedy ). so imo Phil never really gives us anything juicy to talk about, and from an analytical/gossipy pov he's dry as a bone and it's like a barren wasteland trying to find something interesting to say about Phil's liveshows/latest videos.

this is obviously just my opinion though, I'm sure there are many of you guys that can find and have found interesting things about Phil's stuff and I enjoy reading all the different points of view. I just don't find him that interesting personally, and especially his latest video with Hazel for me was a big disappointment... I know he can do better than that. (also anyone else find it a bit weird that he basically just used the video with Hazel to completely spon the tour?)

I guess what I'm trying to say is that neither of them are perfect and I wouldn't want us to praise the both of them constantly when we may be disappointed by some things they do. so I don't think the criticism is unfair or particularly unbalanced)

They were both spon videos but only phils had the harsh critics going for him for the #ad, dan was shirtless and fondled a pillow so we ignore it.

but people werent happy with phils video because it still felt very much like an ad video, whereas dans was a standard, higher quality than usual dinof formula video. dan's video had a lot of what people had been saying for ages that they missed, so people were happy, whether or not it was a spon, and the crunchyroll placement itself was minimal. i didnt even watch phils video, so this isnt even my horribly biased opinion, its based off of what other people said about it; it was fine, but it wasnt great, so the ad part felt more obvious. dans was one of his better received videos, so people didnt mind as much (actually, plenty of people complained saying dan only made 'good' content when he was getting a higher pay but )
spon videos only really get criticised here when they feel like forced ads, or the content itself is bad and obviously just rushed, or the thing theyre making a video for isnt something theyd actually use irl

I completely disagree in the sense that I really liked Phil's ad video, and think it was a sponsored video done well. It featured the product, but still felt very genuine to me and like a normal good AP video.

Looks like Dan got a haircut. I hope bags under his eyes mean he was editing videos for when they're on tour.

I like how she said that she was very awkward, my guess is that Dan probably was as well. He has been spotted outside a lot ever since Phil left.

i think many people liked phils video too. He always makes spon videos that dont feel forced and the anime video was a good one. And no, dans video was not of higher quality than usual dinof formula video thats the formula his videos are supposed to be. The sketches were not bad but he can do better. people were enthusiastic just because it was a... sketch and the cute shirtless boys were a big factor too.

I have to say that it was dans best video in a long time but it didnt deserve the reaction and praise it got

That's such an interesting thought, that Phil had either pre-edited it or had a say in how she did. Is that common practice around YT? I now feel like I need to rewatch old Tipsy Talks and focus on how she edits, but yeah - it does flow more, generally, isn't as filled with jumpcuts, she likes dramatic silences. Huh.

(And yeah, the one after "I will have Dan" was so obvious, and the face Phil pulls - like somewhere between romantic and uber-constipated-why-did-you-say-that, it's a gem.)

I went to watch more tipsy talk, some goes deep, some very small talk ish, but none of them feel like this one, the contents are chopped into small pieces while distract by the interviewee's persona. Not even in the Amy Schumer one. Phil has a firm control i will give him that. It feels more AP than hazel.

That does make me want to see the real life power dynamic between deppy. From what i can see, most of times Dan is controlling and Phil is following, but when Phil wants to be in control, Dan is just willingly submit to him. Quite a daddy&mommy dynamic imo.

I think Phil's attitude toward making sure things get done precisely the way he wants (I don't just mean the finish product in terms of content, but the entire process from start to finish) is probably a lot of why the two of them have found the kind of success that they have. Dan might have higher standards for his videos (according to him) but he second guesses himself so much that he just doesn't end up getting anything done. Maybe some people don't think Phil's videos are good, but Phil has the motivation to see something through and willingness to put in the work he needs to do (including the boring behind the scenes stuff, like calling all the venues) that it's hard to imagine Dan sitting still long enough for. The magic of them is what they both bring to the table and their success is a factor of that. It's a bit tragic to me that I think most of what Phil contributes doesn't actually get seen therefore he doesn't get as much attention/credit.

i was talking more about people judging phils videos by the title and quiz/challenge/vloggy style videos before they even watch the actual thing. If you go a couple (or a couple of dozen) pages back you will see exactly that.

Yes phils anime spon was well received by many and it was judged (because spon) by many i was just expecting more people to see the spon part of dan video too

my point is that it was very much a dinof video anyway and was well done, with the spon aspects fitting in naturally. many people did like phils video, but you claimed it was trashed so i'm explaining why some people said they werent happy with it. even then, he was hardly criticised harshly, it just wasnt always considered an incredible video and it being an ad didnt really help
+ people already knew dans video would be a spon, so the eyerolls were brought out before the video was even up
