Since I know people her love relating Dan's hiatus situation to the situations and thoughts of people we know he admires, here is Natalie Tran's reply to someone inquiring about her videos since it's been so long since she uploaded (over 2 years by now). Of course there's a difference considering Natalie's income doesn't rely on YouTube with her having a Real Job and all, but it's still interesting.
Her wanting to do 'something new' is of course of interest because that's what a lot of discussion surrounding Dan is about. I didn't care about that though.

I'm much more interested in her praising her fans like that, because damn. This really did make me think of Dan and his thoughts about us as an audience. People, myself very much included in my critical moments, often wonder whether Dan would like a different audience. One he can relate to more, maybe one that isn't so very overwhelmingly female. But in the end, this probably reflects his thoughts a lot better huh? He always praises us, and our humor, and our talents. He loved meeting us, and as exhausting as tour probably was for him it made him happy. As much of frustrating mess handful that the phandom can be, he really does care for us as much as we do for him. Just like the song says.

This soft post has no real point, I just miss both Dan and Nat a lot.

edit: hey new page, let's all work together to keep this one nice and friendly and clean from moderating :love2:

Dan & Natalie Tran together would be my ultimate dream collab. I'm always reminded of her influence on his videos when I watch Daniel and Depression. And I think you're right, Catallena, about Dan probably feeling more like Natalie does about his fan base than what we sometimes project on him when we pick up on some of his frustrations. I saw this tweet earlier today that kinda goes with what you said and it made me feel soft & I'm missing Dan a lot today too.

That is a nice sentiment from Tran, but I honestly don’t know what I think Dan thinks about the audience anymore. I don’t really trust their tour selves because they had to be on their best behaviours the entire time to not only keep selling tickets (and merch etc), but to give everybody a good and positive overall experience that had to be equal for each show (so nobody would feel ripped off or bad/guilty about getting them on (or oh no, maybe even causing them to have) an off day). They had to be happy and excited and having the best time ever, and giving the best show ever, every night. They’re professionals whose literal stated goal and theme was to give the people what they want, and the people want to think we mean as much to them as D&P mean to us, and that’s (apparently, at least for people who were able to enjoy any aspect of last year, can’t speak from experience there) what “we” got. BUT now at a time where Dan doesn’t have to be on his best behaviour in order to sell anything (apart from Phil’s merch here and there apparently,,,), what we’re getting is... no communication or anything at all, nothing to indicate he gives even an errant care about engaging with, or even placating, an audience. And of course, he doesn’t have to. But it’s much easier to take a negative or at least indifferent meaning from that. My current takeaway is that he just does. not. care (which again he doesn't have to) and without a big project to sell (or even a small project like videos of any kind on any channel), he has no reason to care, or pretend to.

I think him and crabstickz are actually very similar. I love Chris and will fight anybody who has one negative thing to say about him (unless the negative thing is said fondly, because same), but he’s even "worse" than Dan when it comes to discarding an audience and pulling disappearing acts when promising to post and be alive. But I don’t have any bitter feelings toward Chris about that, possibly because he’s so upfront about the way he is (or possibly because he's been like this so long which means maybe I'll mellow about Dan if he continues in this vein for a couple more years- because what else would there be to do at that point but mellow?). He openly discusses not quite feeling comfortable with the audience he most resonated with, not trusting what they actually enjoy/ed about him (yes, being dismissive, thinking it’s just a lot of girls watching him because they think he’s hot, and not knowing how to take that, and also not trusting protestations to the contrary). Offensive? Kind of. Completely incorrect? Who's to say?

Slightly problematic or not, I at least appreciate the transparency, and I think being upfront in that way (honestly detailing what you find uncomfortable to deal with as an internet personality without sugarcoating it or just quietly internalizing any resentments completely while saying everything’s great all the time except maybe don’t stalk me at an airport if you can find it in your benevolent heart to refrain, but we do so appreciate you so ultimately it’ll still be fine if you do lol please don’t be mad at the suggestion and sorry for bringing it up).

Over the years, Chris been a much less present presence on the internet than Dan has been, and yet I feel like there's way less mystery surrounding him and his plans/attempts/struggles, because in between disappearances he just outright says he has things he wants to do (and also needs to make money because he's a human being and does things for money), but he goes back and forth about how to do them, and then second-guesses who he's making it for etc etc rinse and repeat. I know Dan has procrastination issues, and quality issues, but he's always had those, and yet there's never been a dry spell quite like this so I don't know wtf is going on with him and I feel less charitable about it for reasons that I'm sure aren't fair and are my own problem but here I am bitching anyway again some more. Human transparency just goes such a long way, and I feel nothing but a lack of that on their side lately (but I throw in 2018 with that as well (with the distrust of tour selves and also and still: fuck rize), so "lately" has really been a looong time from this side of the fence).

But in other news: when the fuck will they go back to Japan? It seems like so many YTers have gone lately, or are planning to go, that they seem really overdue for another trip..... :japhan: Maybe it would get some kind of juices flowing... career-plan-wise you perv (and also give them an excuse to maybe post actually interesting sm things, just saying).

At what point could Dan have actually died?

I'm somewhat convinced he's gone back to uni. His disappearance would be well timed with uni exams, especially if he makes a reappearance just before his birthday.

Did anyone else notice the London Marathon page yesterday and wonder - could it be....?
Image
...we'll prob never know :runner:
I'm making my own headcanon that this is true, that Dan totally ran the marathon.
Wouldn’t surprise me if he registered, but alas doesn’t look like he (or his name twin) ended up running. The marathon had pretty robust tracking via bib number and that runner had no stats for the day.
This is fascinating. Is this maybe the montage he was mentioning in that insta story about jogging earlier in the year?

I'm literally SO HERE for this video and if he (not his name twin) decided not to run, this could even be a great video in accepting failure or realizing you need more time for something etcetc.

Dan... :please:
As much as I do not want Dan to get inspiration from Adrian (one of them is enough, thank you, I don't need two Howell siblings telling me I just need to eat a ton of sweet potatoes and run a lot), I would actually 100% be here for a video about training for a marathon or just generally about being more active/doing sports/etc. I'd love to see his perspective on it, and how he feels about being more active after years and years of apparently hating any kind of exercise.

Please, Dan :please:
A MASSIVE yes to this.
(and the sweet potatoes/running comment made me laugh a lot)

I think I might've reached my zen because all I can say is that, you do you Dan. Whatever he's doing, whether he actually prepared for a marathon, went on a hike to find himself, started back uni or is renovating his forever home, I hope he's happy. I hope he's enjoying this time off the internet, embracing this journey that for the first time in a long, long time is just for himself, not seen by anyone else but his close friends and family. I hope he's drinking enough water and sleeping well at least a couple of days a week, I hope he's eating pizza better than Dominos and playing games until his thumbs hurt and he laughs and smiles and has all the sex he wants.

I've gone past the stages of grief, and maybe I reached acceptance for this hiatus. I'm fine. I'm free. Hope he is too, whatever he is doing, I hope he's still fueling the creative juices and when he's ready he makes something out of them that he can be proud of. And if he never is, that's still okay. I hope he's trying to be kind to himself.

I'm very sleep deprived please accept this sappy post about Dan, I've been harsh to him but it's all out of love and missing him
Will probably never be over the BONCAS and the beauty of Phil Lester.

Ug, he's not a furry, he's not a YouTuber, what is he? I kid, well, sort of. I'm just feeling some rather negative feelings towards Dan at the moment, and I don't expect they'll go away until he either lets us know what the heck is going on or creates some content. Today's Tony Award nominations have also put me in a very sour mood so that's not helping.

Oh Dan, oh Hector. And I only just found a furry crafting YouTube channel for the first time. Tbh I find the Sonic trailer less weird than the Pikachu one. Sonic seems a bit too slim and tall, but wisecracking Pikachu doesn’t sit right for me at all.

I kinda think we'd know. Someone would have spotted him on campus and there'd be creep shots or just gossip flying around. Unless he's doing an online course, that is. I like the idea of him going back to uni, always have, but I don't think it's all too likely.

Yeah, same. I'm not happy about the miscommunication but what's done is done. I hope this time away from everything helped him get to a better place and that whatever he's doing is bringing him joy. I do hope he's going to tell us what's up at some point. I'd be happy with "I'm not coming back" or "I don't know when I'll be back" or anything else, just... something.

Very beautifully put liola. I’m still in my zen place, though my acceptance came after like only a week of grieving (I’m still surprised by this).

Ah that like. :happytears:

I’m not sure if they would feel comfortable going for two dogs at once, but it’s a really cute thought/picture. Hurry up :foreverhome:

I’m bored. If anybody else is bored, can we do a thing where we speculate on what D&P do all day? And this is being asked in the spirit of fun, so realistic businessy answers need not apply pls.

-wake up but spend up to an hour or more on their phones/tablets/whathaveyou while still in bed

-at some point go on jog/walk and joyfully interact with every dog they see while somewhat awkwardly acknowledging the owners

-videogames

-scroll through pics of dogs in need of homes while drooling

-television and then more videogames

-go out for an expensive too-many-course dinner to discuss their evolving plans of world domination :ribena:

oh hell yeah. i'm into this.

-argue about what kind of faucet they want for their new kitchen

-phil learns to cook fancier meals that he then has to deliver to dan who's deep in guild wars and isn't paying attention to phil's homemade garlic aioli

-fostering a dog and hiding it from the landlord

-moving furniture around because they're bored and want to try new layouts. phil runs into a wall when he gets out of bed to go pee one night.

Ha, that last one  That old clip of Dan banging into their old glass kitchen door was endlessly funny.

I love this

- rock paper scissor matches over the tiniest decisions all day

- shouting random movie quotes across their flat to get each other's attention

- making up random songs / changing the lyrics to popular songs to reflect whatever boring tasks they're completing

- finding new fancy places to have afternoon tea, preferably with a nice view

- trying out lots of different types of bird seed to see which one is most effective in bringing birds to their balcony

- keeping an eye on, and discussing in depth, the pigeon drama that occurs in said balcony

This is fun!

- playfully mocking each others outfits

- indecisive waffling over what to order for lunch

- lazy baths together

- creating secret pinterest boards for decorating/renovation ideas

Less cute but probz realistic:

- calling lawyers and accountants about trust assets and corporate shares and taxes (I hope while wearing a moose hat)

- Dan creating long lists of video ideas and then feeling overwhelmed so going to play guild wars until 2AM, but then getting up by 8:30 because he feels guilty about wasting another day but then being sleep deprived all day therefore not being productive

- Calls with the merch team about how removing VAT isn't working properly for overseas customers in the online store

- Dan staring at youtube analytics and spiraling out based on it and then Phil tries to solve dan's spiraling with snacks and enough dog pictures that Dan's imessage storage fills up

I love them all :happytears: And honestly the addition of the moose hat to most of them really kicks things up a notch

-temporarily kidnap neighbour’s dogs who happen by their door (shh yes it happens at their current place too)

I love this game.

- Going to the gym or out for runs alone and acting like it's an MI5 mission to not get seen by fans. Texting each other things like "close encounter, had to run into an interior shop, what do you think of this lamp?" and "i'm bringing the fake mustache next time" and "took the risk to pet a dog, think it's owner might have recognized me but i made a getaway in time"

- playing board games that need more than two people by each adopting multiple personalities and playing against each other and also themselves (no one wins)

- making up their own board games that they like to pretend they'll propose to Big Potato but since most of them just devolve into promising sexual favors to be allowed to break the rules they just made, none of them really pan out

- Phil endlessly googling houses they could buy and then both of them, based on prior experience, coming up with truly outlandish stories for why the cheap ones are very cheap. (That Phil eventually forgets they made up and ends up repeating on the phone to Kath as though they were real stories.)

I’m living for this game now. Mine is more of a wishlist than speculation lol

- spending an hour trying to learn how to tie a proper hoodie bow together and ending up with Phil yanking it down again while dan is ..ahem distracted

- watching jimmy’s videos together and Phil decides to blatantly copy him, making scented candles, while dan tries to keep the flat from burning down

- training to run the Vitality London 10,000 in their underwear together (please)
