That was such a funny video, gosh my jaw hurts from laughing. I'm gonna rewatch tomorrow and make a list of all the questionable things he said. "put my thing in it" over and over why

And I'm really glad we got rainbow cake content. Even if it wasn't all that rainbow.

I love him :prideheart2:

EDIT: bringing unseen baby Phil content to topofpage

That... could have gone so much worse  I love him and his stupid poses and insecure jumping and how he gets some things right and some things wildly wrong.

That wine fridge looks depressingly empty, at least put some ribena in there for show :ribena:

I love him and he’s so cute. When I first got the notification I half thought ‘this man better not be mixing the ingredients in his damn corner’ thankfully he did move to the kitchen. I don’t know much about baking but I thought phil would of remember a bit more from the past baking videos. That piece of ‘fencing’ what phil called it, looks like it’s from the wine? Fridge behind him. I saw some people were a bit upset/ said it felt different without dan, but I had no problem with it being just phil. He has enough personality to do it alone. I enjoyed it a lot and it didn’t feel like anything was “missing”. Wish phil would do some more cooking or baking videos in the future.

That video was cute! There are times when (in my opinion) Phil hasn't succeeded in filling the empty Dan space, but I think this one did well. Or... the best it could anyway. I still miss Dan, sue me. ESPECIALLY for a video that is more obviously Dan-less. It was cute and at times genuinely funny. I mean, I cackled out loud at "Time to come out! You're gay."

As always, I'm fascinated by that sad, empty kitchen. And that Phil brought the Bob Ross painting into it to add a bit of decor. We also continue to see that same, barely-used soap. Y'all are fooling absolutely nobody!

Honestly, the best part of this video is that it's exactly the content we come to Phil for. On-brand weirdness, poses, his hands, the jokes, the general silliness. A solid AmazingPhil video if I ever did see one.

Happy Birthday, Philliam! :birthday:

This video is all I could have asked for and more.

The return of some baking! I think he pulls it off so well on his own. He gets to do things his way, he is funny and he fills the space.

I mean, the cake was hella lumpy, but he still made me smile so much, especially this bit:
Also; filming flat still exists omg.

The foot on the hob made me think of the kitchen not being in regular use. Most of my previous cats were lucky and walked all over the counters at night without ever burning a foot (we once found muddy footprints in the morning or we might never have known), but one did get the message cos it was still warm when he jumped onto it. Thankfully no more than warm. Current cat is just polite enough not to do that (dining table is okay, though).

I love Phil's hoodie in this.

I think he was very charismatic and entertaining. Lovely Phil video. Obviously Dan wasn't there, but I think they should be allowed to be recognised as separate talents if that's the branding they're going for.

I'm sick of missing Dan but I'm more sick of every time Phil does something it turns into a conversation about Dan, who obviously isn't interested in doing videos or regularly communicating with us (till he has something to sell) I'm not having a go at anyone who misses Dan, especially people who relate more to Dan than Phil but I just wish people would appreciate Phil for himself and not just a way to find out about Dan like the live shows at times.
I hope Phil does more baking videos as long as he enjoys it, I'd also love him to do gaming on his main channel because I enjoyed it in the live shows. I think Phil should be able to do things he did with Dan without the main topic of conversation being I wish Dan was there.

I think it's to be expected given this is the *first* baking video he's done alone, and it was such a beloved thing they did together, and Dan is so absent. I'm sure if Phil continues to do solo baking at any point it'll die down, like it did for the gaming on his liveshows (which I hope makes a return! As long as it doesn't make younow tank any more than it already does).

I think most people - from what I've seen anyway - *do* appreciate and love Phil's solo content, whilst also missing Dan; it's unfortunate that Phil gets a lot of those questions, but Dan isn't around to take them so it's inevitable, really.

So I’m really curious about this but for the last 2 weeks IRL has skipped doing Fan Friday and other than the initial email about their huge sale they haven’t advertised it at all. Normally I wouldn’t think that’s too odd but Phil hasn’t even really been pushing the sale either. He did put a sentence in the video description about today being the last day for the joint shops being merged but why have they been so quiet about the shops?

Phil pushed the sale in his liveshow, so I wouldn't say he's being quiet about it.

I completely agree that Phil deserves to be appreciated more as a solo entertainer. He has such a creative and unique comic aura to himself, solely thanks to his always out-of-box way of thinking and refreshing perspective on every ordinary details in his life. He is full of surprise, unpredictable, always subverting expectations with all kinds of awkward and weird acts. He is a true “creator”.

Sure, for now it aches me that Phil’s unruly humor is no longer roasted and supported by Dan’s quick wit and sharp sarcasm - Dan is an extraordinary “critic” to Phil as a “creator” (Dan is thoughtful, intelligent, analytical and poignant. He is just always so articulate, which also makes him seem louder and noticeable compared to Phil’s quirky humor) and it is exactly their mutual complementary comic styles that have made them an truly unproblematic, classic comic duo (because their comic timing comes from creativity and wisdom, instead of cheap prejudice and sensational ignorance like so many other YouTuber “comedians”).

Anyway, for the time being they have decided to develop separately in their careers, and I am very glad to see Phil being creative and pretty (seriously though he looks so shiny and gorgeous)on his own.

Also, I’m not sure why but I always find all the clueless casual viewers in the comment session of Phil’s videos so hilarious. No offense to any of them. I just realize Dan’s such a cunning, smooth troll to these casual viewers. So many of them seriously have no idea that Deppy still live together, going on dates together regularly. For them it looks like they have simply grew apart. Just think: he manages to come out, word his statement so cunningly that only confirms to his core audience his relationship with Phil but leaves the general audience somehow very confused. Without lying a word, he somehow really manages to steer away the public attention on their personal life and keep what they have private to themselves. No matter how I can’t help feeling upset about his absence, I am still amazed by his trolling skills. He truly understands how PR work I think.

I decided a while ago not to hope for Phil to do any solo baking because I thought he was too wary of the backlash he’d get. So this video was a wholly unexpected surprise, and I’m so glad he decided to just go for it! Here are my highlights:
  • [0:23] Phil shares his feelings for Paul Hollywood:
P: I don’t want the steely glaze [sic] of Paul Hollywood. Maybe I do. I don’t know. I can never decide.
  • [0:29] Phil explains Dan’s absence:
P: As it’s out of season, this is my first time baking on this channel without Dan.
  • [1:21] Phil encourages everyone to use their imaginations:
P: I’ve got some Unicorn Confetti. What part of the unicorn did this come from? Did it poop it out? Did it cry it out? Did it come out of another bodily function?
  • [3:38] When he turned seven, Phil’s parents made him a computer cake, and he also had a person dressed up in a...rabbit(?) fursuit at his party. Phil shows photos of both the cake and the fursuit.
  • [5:17] Phil cracks himself up:
P: “That was quite a good crack, Phil!” “Thanks, Phil.” Enjoying my own crack. *laughs*
  • [7:13] Phil adds an ASMR segment to the video. It is horrible (as always) and goes on for far too long.
  • [8:36] Phil calls attention to the fact that his Siri sounds like an Irish man. 🇮🇪
  • [8:40] Phil shows the front of the oven, and the reflection shows all of Dan and Phil’s old dining chairs.
  • [8:49] Phil sidesteps into the shot while hunched over and saying “update” in a weird voice. Surely, this is a reference to something, but, without knowing the reference, it looks like Phil might be completely insane.
  • [9:40] This is a quote about baking and nothing else:
P: I’m gonna keep an eye on it, and then, when I feel like it’s ready, I’ll stick my thing in the middle.
  • [9:45] Phil poses for the camera.
  • [9:50] Phil has stuck his foot up on the counter. I think waiting for his cake to bake is actually driving him insane.
  • [10:17] Phil outs his cake: 🏳️‍🌈
P: Time to come out. You’re gay!
  • [12:06] Why do I get the feeling that this isn’t Phil’s first time doing this?
P: It says, “Massage the icing before you use it.” Shall I do it sensually? Do you want me to get you right between the shoulder blades? *spanks the icing*
  • [12:36] Phil shows off his fully decorated cake. 🎂
  • [13:06] Phil takes his first bite of the cake (v glamorous), and he’s immediately impressed by how well it has turned out.
  • [13:57] Phil says he’s cleaned up some of the mess because it was stressing him out, but I like to think that he was actually stressed out by the thought of Dan discovering the mess before he’d had a chance to clean it up.
  • [14:50] Phil uses an expression I had never heard before:
P: I had the feeling in my water.
Apparently, it’s similar to “I felt it in my bones” or “I had a gut feeling.”
  • Once again, Phil has put two links to the Dan and Phil Shop in the video description.
You're being beamed up by aggressive aliens and they're plugging in the anal probe
"Oh, God. Okay. I say: *shrug* [...] I'd be like, 'I don't know how this works. Put a condom on that thing. *shrug*'"

Okay this was a really great and funny video and I feel blessed that we got this gift from the birthday boy himself on his actual birthday, but as a person who occasionally dabbles in baking cakes this video also mildly stressed me out. It wasn't nearly as much of a disaster as it could've been (BAKING IS SCIENCE, COOKING IS FEELING) since he made something edible that looks and apparently tastes like weird cake, but I'm still gonna have nightmares about that lumpy cake batter dripping into the tin lol.

I'm sure Phil knows that making a baking video without Dan is a bit of a 'risk' and it obviously does feel a bit weird for probably everyone involved, but it turned out to be a really good video so it's fine. Phil telling a cake that it's time to come out and that it's gay is peak comedy and that's all that matters. :ribena:

btw poor Norman. He keeps getting done dirty in Phil's art projects :betta:

Lovely video. Lovely Phil.

And yes, I agree. First baking video without Dan is a calculated risk, he knows. I hope he keeps going, though. Over time everything will settle.

When I first saw what the video was I wondered if maybe Dan would make some sort of appearance and wanted that, but as I was watching I enjoyed the dynamic of Phil’s solo spin on baking. I liked that he brought up the idea of finding out whether Dan was a help or a hindrance. I thought it was kind of odd that he explained why Dan wasn’t in this video (seemed a pretty lame reason since I consider a birthday a holiday). This video had a completely different (not better or worse) vibe. Phil has a way of being comfortingly the same but also surprising that I really appreciate. I’m especially curious now how the joint Q & A will go. I wish that their joint dynamic could evolve, as Phil seems to be growing, but it’s probably so comfortable and just easier to do what they’ve always done. And I guess the old Dan and Phil is what was promised Mexico. Maybe if they ever appear jointly after that they can change things up a bit.

I was wary of Phil's video because I thought it would feel more strange to not have him there. But I loved it all the same - it was probably one of my favourites from his PCOU videos. Like, the only thing I missed a little was Dan's exasperation at Phil's many, many innuendos. Other than that, it was top notch and I feel like I should have more in faith in Phil - he's better at most things than I give him credit for.

Phil’s video was delightful! My kid was giggling and my husband was squirming (he bakes, though has only made a few cakes). I only really missed Dan at the beginning, especially when Phil said it looked like no one had come to his birthday party. Like yeah, it really does feel like that, but like most Phil vids, where I’m skeptical at the beginning, he disarms me with his charm and unique humor. I had to hush the husband at the end and tell him to let Phil be proud of himself, his enthusiasm and glee is so endearing.

The soap levels are hilarious, though to be fair (to their hygiene) there is probably soap in the bathrooms, or at least in the gaming room en-suite, rip. I doubt that they did more than snack when they would film back to back videos. The soap in the kitchen probably gets the most use directly before and after a baking (or pumpkin carving) video.

A bit off topic, but Jon Cozart posted his first vid in a long while (since 2018) and I love the way he just casually dismisses his absence by saying “hey guys, sorry it took so long but I just wasn’t feeling good about anything” and then goes right into the content of the vid.

Jon and Dan seem to share a few common traits that I find interesting... getting lost in the creative process, long stretches of hiatus, little audience interaction between projects, overthinking, queer identity, dry/ sardonic humor, prone to melancholy, etc.

No profound takeaway other than to say maybe there’s hope and a model for Dan’s return.

I’m amazed Jon Cozart makes a living sometimes, certainly on YouTube, but anyway, that’s his business, I’m just feeling free with my thoughts at 4am having been awake for 2 hours. He has some serious viewcounts, so that might do it. He’s always been very few and far between with his videos. They are all very good too, though tbh so are Philosophy Tube’s every month. I’m not advocating for wall-to-wall monthly masterpieces, though. I feel for people like Olly who’ve succeeded themselves into a corner of pressure, though I’m sure they’re capable of pulling back if they need to.

I met Jon at sitc a few years ago and he’s really sweet, was grateful and touched that people kept up with his channel despite the long gaps. I haven’t watched his new one yet, I’m currently not enjoying the updated thumbnail with cheesy grin, but that’s not why, I’m just too tired for a whole 20 minutes.

All that and the point was there might be hope yet for Dan’s channel. I’m not sure, but then we can’t be cos even he might not know right now, but yeah, it’s possible.
