I'm just blabbering now.

i think he just desperately wants a pet/child/SOMETHING to take care of but he's not allowed any of that so he's collecting plant children. (they do all have names.) he keeps nagging dan for a tiny apartment friendly pet like a hamster and seeing as he grew up with pets, it probably feels like there's a small void in the house.

I agree with this. I feel like Phil is a person that likes caring for things/people, and since there is not a lot of choice for him right now, he started caring for plants. After the tour, they should really buy that house and get a pet.

Also while I would love to get more of Phil’s onions, which I do think he has been sharing more lately, I don’t really want Phil’s channel to start talking about serious stuff. That’s really not what I want from that channel.

Now that I reread this tweet, I just wonder if he worded it like this on purpose? Idk, I have this theory that Dan doesn't like telling outright lies, and whenever possible goes for sneakily-worded and/or ambiguous statements. (Whereas Phil has fewer qualms about lying directly.)

Like, is there any chance that the "don't believe anything on the Internet" is intended to have a double meaning, and he's also implicitly telling us not to believe him either? Am I reaching? I'm just really fascinated by Deppy's approach to misleading the phandom.

(On a side note, does anyone know the source of the rumor that someone was being mean to Dan at an airport??)

I've been trying to work out what I don't like so much about Phil. Feel free to skip this post. It is mostly just cathartic for me. I've realized that what I find offputting about him is where we see his moments of insecurity. Like in the chat logs video about how his girlfriend broke up with him, or when he has mentioned being bullied at school. I guess that I don't like his impassive attitude about these things. And this definitely relates back to me and a fear of feeling out of control in my life (personal shit- I've just learned recently that when you have that gut dislike, it often is a reflection on your own unconscious).
Dan definitely shows his insecurity. But then he always seems to be searching for answers. Then he will say things like 'This is the happiest I've been in my life', and I feel good for him. He has moments of real confidence that I really like about him.
I realized this through thinking about how content that I like from Phil is things like DanandPhilCrafts, or his old vids where he either acted more confident or played an interesting character. So I guess that 'manchild' Phil for me is the one who puts himself down or acts really ditzy. I like the image of self-confident Phil, but I don't feel like I ever get to see it.

I've hinted at this being my opinion before, but is it reaching too much to assume that the leaking of the valentine's day video was a major factor into him closing himself up and tightening his persona? Like, we all talk about dan's reaction because he was vocal about it, but I think Phil's silence says much more. If I filmed something that intimate and then it became publicly available, I would definitely alter my image and try to avoid being put into that vulnerable state again.

I get that your argument is a bit more nuanced than what I made it out to be: you are saying you don't like moments where he shows vulnerability and you want to see more examples of him being confident, but I also feel like when you shut yourself off from showing insecurity, or at least act impassive when you recount moments of insecurity, you also, by the "you can't selectively numb emotions" aphorism, can't really display true moments of confidence either. To make it seem like I'm not completely butchering your comment, I bolded the specific wordings that prompted my response.

I think you totally captured what I was trying to say- thanks for trying. I find the voldy argument a bit hard to judge as I wasn't in the phandom at the time. But yeah, something about how Phil kind of numbs down experiences bothers me.

I've never questioned how fond Phil is about Dan, to me that has always been clear. While Dan might say more things to let us know that he cares for Phil, Phil shows it with his actions.

To me Phil's self-deprecation reads as a healthy amount because Phil also doesn't come off as reserved in pride about things he does, or things he does with Dan. Dan on the other hand, bothers me so much because he seems to think that the only way to approach anything creative he's done that's more than a year old is to basically call it a load of crap and laugh at it. The last radio show was sapped of sentimentality to me because it was basically an hour of Phil trying to subtly congratulate them and be proud of how far they'd come with the show, and Dan projecting embarrassment onto every single clip they showed.

I think when Phil does put himself down it's because he's acknowledging something in himself that he thinks people would realize anyway, and it comes from an honest non-persona place. Whereas with Dan he takes things that no one would actually find that bad and acts like it's excruciating constantly. Maybe he really is that prone to thinking everything he's put effort toward in the past is crap, or maybe it's because if he acts that way about everything then he doesn't have to acknowledge the things that he actually feels it's true about. But in the end that means putting himself down is completely part of the danisnotonfire persona, yet Phil is the one getting raked over the coals for it. This is why these guys have personas; because people get comfortable in their concept or grasp of who Dan and Phil are from onscreen content, and to break out of those might be what people want on some level but it also unsettles them on another.

I don't think I'd want a more serious Phil. I mean, I wouldn't hate it, just the general reason that I've always preferred Phil's content is because it's never as serious. I'm generally a very negative and sad person, so I try to stray away from serious topics in my free time as much as I possibly can.

Maybe if it was only an occasional thing, I'm sure he has some pretty interesting outlooks on life which we never see, but I probably wouldn't watch them.

I feel the same way, I enjoy his lightheartedness.

I think he started buying houseplant because he misses having a garden, but then he kinda can't stop himself, that's my guess tho. And he can also look at the plants when he is getting annoyed with Dan. Or that he thinks the houseplants are the children that he couldn't have now.

I have friends who like plants and also around Dan-Phil's age, that's not old right? But they all like full on plant it from a seed type of person... My mum and grandma are like Phil in terms of plant, but they all very lonely without children or husband by their side. (This is getting dark, back to the bin! )

This reminds me of my theory that in a few years, D&P are gonna run away to the countryside and under the radar adopt kids and stop being stars and live a normal domestic life.

I'm going I'm going to argue that Phil has always had a ""persona" of sorts, from the very beginning. He was always AmazingPhil on camera. Phil didn't even let his audience know his last name until about 2011, and even in the older, oversharing days of Youtube we know pretty much nothing about his past relationships or or sex life or anything...he has never been a particularly open book. I would argue that he's only become more private because his audience has grown so exponentially. I'm going to be that annoying person and remind everyone that we still don't know if Voldy was real.

don't want to start a war but until someone explains how phil is that good of an actor, I can't help but see the valentine's day video as anything but real. i posted this argument originally in the if you don't ship phan thread so maybe if anyone actually wants to debate me on that point we can move over there

Sorry for my tricky wording! Yes, I mean that he was the creator of an incredibly raw video recounting intimate details that he treasures and cares about. His preference for keeping aspects of himself private probs just added to that, and, like sweetmm said, must have been a slap in the face for him. I said "in many ways," to add a disclaimer, because, for all we know, Dan might have been out to less people (insert any other reason why it would have negatively effective him even though he wasn't the one onscreen).

Seeing the array of opinions on the last few pages and me being able to see people's sides (if not agree with a lot of them) is kinda of a slap on my face of how much of our discussions is guess-work based on what we perceive of them, I'm sad that we will probably never have 100% sure answers to them even if it's exactly that what keeps so many people with their eyeballs glued on their movements

It is really amazing how two people can look at the same thing and see two different things!

As for definitive answers, I feel like if phan is real, we'll have some sort of answer in the far future. It depends on so many factors though. If they end up breaking up, there would be no reason to come out.

It was kinda frustrating to see Dan just cringing (real or otherwise) at all of their clips/links etc (I think the only vaguely positive thing he said was "didn't this make your mum cry?" or something about a Big Weekend video). Kind of a shame that he couldn't at least be outwardly proud of something they'd been working on for 3-4 years.

Well, isn't this how it normally is anyway? Even with people you know irl, you 'know' them only based on how you perceive them. Someone could perceive that person entirely different than you so the concept is almost the same, resulting in the same type of discussions. While irl you may know a little more about someone because they let you see more of them/ are more open with you/ they give you more information, you still won't have a 100% answer about a lot of the things they say or do. I think this is what makes people complex, not just Deppy tbh.

For example we may never know if they're together. We may never know if they're not together. An irl person would share things like that with an irl friend if you ask me. Imagine going up to your friend and being like "are you dating so-and-so" and they just wave their hands around and back up slowly and go "you may never knooooooooow"

Hmm. I would say that a lot of people on YT probably click on videos because the speaker is hot. That's certainly how I navigated YT back in the day. Obviously it's not the only reason why I continued to watch, but it's one of the main reasons why I clicked. It's interesting to me that that's not how you see it haha. So, you click on videos for content rather than eye candy? I do that with beauty bloggers and sometimes videos of YTers I don't watch much like shane, so I can understand that.

It's almost like this super extreme defense mechanism from Dan. He MUST be proud of what he's done, who wouldn't, but him cringing and yelling at literally everything he's ever done on the internet means that nobody can really criticise him. all criticism can be brushed off. Because everything is a joke, his whole life is a joke, why would anyone want to watch his videos/"pls kill me" etc and that feels shitty to me.

Maybe he really truly thinks his career is one big accident and resents the fact his master YT plan went too well??????

I didn't really get emotional during their last radio show, which is a bit unlike me, but now looking back on it I do feel like Dan's reactions towards things played a big part in that. I felt like Phil was looking back on it all with much fondness, but I didn't really get that vibe of Dan. He was just cringing at pretty much everything and that kept pulling me out of my fondness.

That is true too but I think the amount of things irl friends share with you has more to do with how private they are. I definitely have close friends that don't really share things like that with others not so close friends. They just evade the question or chose to not answer it at all.

I totally agree with it, you never know someone 100%, I'm constantly on the fence of 'I really want to know' and 'Maybe it's better this way'. Also I do think that some (if not a huge part) of my fascination with phan is the whole not knowing/want to know thing, but by far it's not the only reason.
I just wish we did got more 'material' to look at their personalities and opinions closely you know? Like, their closest friends rarely talk about them if not only to make a comment about how they like them, the live shows do help with taking a closer look but not that much. While we do know a lot about them -if only because we look at it really close and debate everything on here- it isn't that much if you look at it from this angle.

Gonna put my opinion, excuse the grammatical errors and if it isn't clear:

I like more Dan's content, for me Phil's is more off a hit or miss and usually I don't find myself rewatching his content, that's my personal taste. I don't want something much more serious from them and if I want something deep or meaningful I'll go watch some documentary, read books but youtube isn't my source for deeper content, it's a place were I laugh and occasionaly find videos put by university teachers/ students.
-Phil is more on the vlogging side and that's simply a type of videos I avoid, he is a nice guy but he tends to live me without a connection, I still can't understand why he doesn't express opinions on stupid things.(about his degree: didn't people in previous posts, around the amazing link period, reach the conclusion that he probably doesn't like his degree and intendes to never use it?)
Dan's content is what I like and my only pet peeve here is when people say a good part of his subscribers are teens or only for the looks. Now that could be true but I when I first saw him regarded him as average, now I find him good-looking but still I don't care and my consideration over his appereance is still more of a casual observation, like he has brown hair
I enjoy most their bond, be it platonic or romantic, and their gaming channel as it's the only one I'm subscribed.

-I would love for them to be more forward but at the end I know they are private persons that rightly so won't, and while I want to know more at the same time that's something I admire, I may be one of the few that doesn't want a brother tag with martyn .
They both are were they are thanks to each other and it's normal that not all P subscribers are dan's ones and viceversa.

-Regarding their views/subs ratio I think that they should work on it but still pull good results, both have an average of 1/3 of their audience, not bad considering how huge their audience is and how other bigger youtubers struggle to reach the 1/4 one. The problem with media fame is how flebile it is, so while they now don't need a change they have to have a plan. It will be interesting to see how the situation developes in 2017 when the tour is over.

I think of all the things about the hotel, this gets me the most. IDK why but I'm always so fascinated every time there's confirmation of a lie.

Though, I think that first tweet isn't necessarily ambiguous. He very blatantly states "i haven't been to an airport." Which is perfectly possible, I mean there's a number of reasons they might stay at such a hotel w/o actually flying anywhere - it's cheaper, easier bus parking, they might be staying away from the obvious places fans might look (this feels like i'm reaching), it's closer to a road they need to get on later, etc. But you lie a few times..... and well, D&P are the definition of "the boys who cried wolf" to me. I literally take everything with a grain of salt. (For example, I still think Dan bought the potato sack.) So, I'm taking the hotel at face value and assuming they were at the airport.

He does tend to do that, though - very carefully craft an ambiguous answer so that if anyone asks or notices, he never specified anything. Which, if you think about, really applies to a bigger picture.....

I'm sure they don't like it when we go full armchair detective on them, but when everything's this shady, can ya really help us? I just want to solve all the mysteries. I need closure.

To me Phil's self-deprecation reads as a healthy amount because Phil also doesn't come off as reserved in pride about things he does, or things he does with Dan. Dan on the other hand, bothers me so much because he seems to think that the only way to approach anything creative he's done that's more than a year old is to basically call it a load of crap and laugh at it. The last radio show was sapped of sentimentality to me because it was basically an hour of Phil trying to subtly congratulate them and be proud of how far they'd come with the show, and Dan projecting embarrassment onto every single clip they showed.

I completely agree with your entire post - but especially the bit above about the last radio show. It was kinda frustrating to see Dan just cringing (real or otherwise) at all of their clips/links etc (I think the only vaguely positive thing he said was "didn't this make your mum cry?" or something about a Big Weekend video). Kind of a shame that he couldn't at least be outwardly proud of something they'd been working on for 3-4 years.

I think Dan has a difficult time with public sentimentality all together. Just look at his plans for his New Years video. He was going to seriously reflect on 2015, but decided instead to turn it into a meme review. The minute emotions are in play, he reverts to: "i'm just joking everything's a joke i'm a joke help" So it's no surprise that he gets loud and cringey when it would be appropriate to just be a little proud.

I think we've all noted how much of a closed book Phil is and definitely on an emotional level, so I think it's a bit easier for Phil to reflect on good times and get serious because he never feels like he's putting himself at risk of getting too emotional or personal. He's confident in showing pride in what he's done without giving off too many ~feels.
