But for people whose job is literally social media and internet presence they really suck at it. Plus they upload usually half hearted videos like once a month and abandoned a hyped up gaming channel that doesn't really deserve the amount of subs it has. And jfc DAPG could've added years to their current status but they chose a book and tour over that... *headdesk* That's how you kill your YouTube career. Now they've probably peaked and they don't show any signs of wanting to really get back into it so what are we gonna do?
This won't just affect their YouTube career either. The reason they get their little radio and hosting gigs is still us; the dedicated phandom who will support everything they do and watch anything they're in. It's not their skills that's for damn sure.
Yeah I might be a bit more dramatic and pessimistic than what the current situation calls for rn but let me live. I had a day.

I really don't agree with you here, I understand the frustration with the lack of content and the fear that they are relying too much on something that can be quick to disappear but I believe that they still work hard on their content and they are aware that youtube can go away really quickly. Yes they are more comfortable in the support of their fanbase but I still think they put a lot of effort in their videos.
Let's talk about how long they spent editing, the effort they put on camera angles, how much they think about each idea and construct that idea into a video that can be enjoyed by so many. And they genuinely seem to love DAPG, they just are very different from other gaming youtubers but I, for one, really like that about them and I wish they never become like pewdiepie or other gamers that just produce massive loads of content with mildly offensive behavior and little thought to what the audience really wants because they may hit the right spot in one or two videos per week while putting about 2 videos out a day where you turn on a camera, scream a bit and put it online.
I'll take anyday one video per month that's 'them' over two videos a week that are fillers with barely any thought just to make the money to survive. They have really engaging personalities, they work hard when they have a project because they aren't content with putting out something that's half done and that's what has been working so well for them.
Comparing their productivity to another youtuber's is a moot point too, we all know how they work and we got into this aware of that and we stayed for our love, we might get angry but saying that:

is a bit unfair. That bit especially irks me, they have skills and that's for sure, the phandom might attract the eyes of a lot of companies but no way a place like bbc would employ them if they didn't have work ethic and skills, especially a place that is based off on a lot of regulars listeners that might stop giving their audience if the content becomes shit just to bring some casual listeners once in a while. You can see how they grown up in the last years, how they have become better at each radio day, more entertaining, speaking more fluently, working on expressing their opinions, working to solve problems that happen on air and just making the whole thing work.
Their videos have grown too, from equipment used (learning to use lights, to make the right choice in camera angles, putting on more characters to tell a history, buying props, learning if a scripted video is better than a non-scripted, learning what their audience really likes to watch, how they learned and bettered their editing skills...) none of it screams lack of interest to me.
Now, this isn't an attack on you but I think it's incredibly easy to fall into this angry mindset because of the drought we're experiencing but you have to take a step back and breathe for a while, yes they are putting out less content, yes some of it might be rushed and yes they might be doing a big misstep by not doing the live shows but it doesn't mean that they just don't care anymore/don't respect us. We all know they have (and always had) this tendency to produce less if something is going on but we like them for their way of being and even for how private they are (even if sometimes we get angry about it) how much do we want these things to change and how much it would affect how the fans react to them? We just had the discussion about how people fall less in love with daily vloggers and that applies to people who start to produce mass content/pay someone to edit things for them and how it affects their following of dedicated fans.
You have every right to be angry at their less than stellar uploading schedule but it's unfair to say they don't care about their audience, their content/skills and that they don't put out effort into connecting with us anymore.
This also isn't a excuse, I agree that they should have pre-filmed more things and kept up with live shows and I'm angry for it, but I do take a step back if what I start thinking of their temporary attitudes clashes with what I think and love about them because I'll know it isn't true.

I don't know if he would like those particular videos, but my point is that she can appreciate/not shy away from adult/semi-problematic/shock humor, which is kind of the point of CAH. We never really see that part of Phil, just tiny little glimpses. I don't think he would freak out if he had to watch those videos either. People who know him say he is not as innocent as he lets on, so i think he could handle it, maybe not like them. She didn't like the video but "appreciated" it for what it was. Kind of like a no kink shame type deal, not her style but not something to flip the table over either. And that to me shows that she can have some personality likenesses to the boys she may not show via her Nerdy Nummies persona. EDIT: achika the motivation could be that Dan likes doing baking videos. I swear he said somewhere that he just really enjoys doing them and that was why he did a few of them with Phil, it was probably a liveshow where he said it idk.

Bear with my wall of rant for a moment, I had never heard of Rosanna before the picture of D&P was posted on her snapchat and I just checked out one of her videos... I couldn't get past the first thirty seconds. Actually, no. I made it to exactly 1:14 of the watermelon video. bluewho hit the nail on the head with the Dolores Umbridge comment. She just has that cadence to her voice that is going to be a nightmare really interesting to try and listen to for more than the intro without wanting to claw my ears off. Maybe I need to watch more and get a more objective opinion.
In all seriousness and let me try to get back to being objective here because I could do a couple of more paragraphs on this and that's just too much negativity for one post but I wonder what the motivation was behind a collab with her? I understand how people find her voice/personality really annoying but I how people don't like her youtube videos because they are staged/with a production team... I mean, she's the opposite of deppy but I look at her youtube/social media like "that's a cooking show", and all of it it's work for her and I don't see a problem separating so much of her personal life to her work-related things because she does let it very clear that all of this is happening, she doesn't pretends like who's in her youtube videos is really who she 100% is in real life and I appreciate it.

After seeing that "calm" clip I realise that I really, really want Dan to make an asmr video. There's absolutely no way in hell he could do it without cringing for a month and I know he'd never do it (the book trailer made me mildly sad because it had so much potential and then a bloody fire alarm) but if he could get past the cringe I genuinely think he could make a really good one.

I'm happy that you believe that, I wish I still could. But I'm not seeing it. I don't see the love for YouTube anymore, though I do hope their spark is still there somewhere or at least returns. But all those things you're naming that 'prove' how much they still care and how much effort they put in? All YouTubers do that. It's nothing special and I really wish people would stop patting them on the back for doing the bare minimum. I don't want mass content, like I really am completely fine with sporadic videos, but then they need to be above the average stuff that gets put out by people who put up weekly videos. And their videos just... aren't.

I'm already aware that have a very unpopular opinion within the phandom that D&P are really not that great at hosting/presenting and are kinda shit radio DJ's (but their chemistry saves them as long as the camera is on, it's worse when you just listen without any video). While hosting something like the Brits they're often unable to make what they're reading of their scripts/cards sound natural (especially Phil) making it sound weird and awkward. Their interviews with artists are hit or miss, the person they're talking to needs to have a similar sense of humor or it doesn't work very well. You can say that that is their style and that's fair enough, but I think that if you do a job like that you need to have a broader appeal and be able to talk to all sorts of people. BBCR1 signed D&P for the same reason they kicked Chris Moyles out in favor of Nick Grimshaw (who is also not that good); they desperately need a younger audience and they can't attract it on their own so they brought people in who can. A normal person on their level would never get a show on R1 though.
And again, more bare minimum I'm not impressed by anymore. Everyone in their field (both radio and YouTube) does the same thing. They NEED to do the same thing, the competition is tough. As far as radio goes; they've improved yes, but I'd hardly call them truly skilled or talented. I admit they worked hard on their shows though, especially the Sunday ones (RIP) and that suits them. Though I noticed they didn't seem as much into it anymore the last months but that might just be me.

I've been taking steps back since 2014 (and I took steps forward in the later half of that year, I've expressed before that DAPG's first months and regular schedule saved my interest in them for me and that's also the last time I genuinely still had the idea they were enjoying YouTube), like I think I've crossed the border and am in Belgium by now ._. The problem to me is that their tendency to stray away from YouTube when they have another project going on has gotten worse. It used to be 'Shit this video is going to be a few days late because of this and that, sorry everyone' and now it's just complete radio silence without seemingly much remorse about it. Because they know we'll let them get away with it, and yeah... I think that's kinda taking advantage of their audience and disrespectful. Plus just not something they can afford in environment like YouTube where new potential stars pick up a camera every day.

Those moments are exactly what I was thinking of
achika I also think their baking videos, plus the fact that they're into fandoms, are the main motivation. That's kind of Dan and Phil's annual 'things' to do, make a baking video a year, do PINOF, things like that. Could be more on the side of business, but plenty of youtubers seem to do videos with her, and I don't really see some kind of ulterior motive for it, but then again I don't know any of those youtubers she has done videos with very well.
I can't really see them turning into such a polished way of video making, either, just doesn't feel right with them at all to me. I mean, look at the reaction when Dan posted the book and tour announcement video. They're so much more DIY than Ro (makes sense, though, because of Phil's Master's and because they don't produce as much content as her (who needs a filming team, video editing team, and producers(?))). I'm not sure where I'm really going with this, but I think the collab fits them enough without wondering if there's more going on based on what Dan and Phil have made before. Haven't they done other cooking videos with Sorted Food or something, too? Doesn't seem too far off when you put that into account.
I would like to know who exactly set it up, though, if it was Ro herself, her management or their management.

In my unquenchable thirst, I've ransacked a big ol' pile of 2009 phan tweets. Yes, that one. They provide a bit of solace in these high and dry days, some hope that we may one day again.

In general, I like how they talked more about the work that goes into making their videos back then, even if it was mostly "argghhhm, the program just crashed for the 9 millionth time" or "this shit won't render" ::cross eyes liney sad face:: I enjoy a bit of "man behind the curtain" something that seems to be lacking a bit in their recent content.

I've been taking steps back since 2014 (and I took steps forward in the later half of that year, I've expressed before that DAPG's first months and regular schedule saved my interest in them for me and that's also the last time I genuinely still had the idea they were enjoying YouTube), like I think I've crossed the border and am in Belgium by now ._. The problem to me is that their tendency to stray away from YouTube when they have another project going on has gotten worse. It used to be 'Shit this video is going to be a few days late because of this and that, sorry everyone' and now it's just complete radio silence without seemingly much remorse about it. Because they know we'll let them get away with it, and yeah... I think that's kinda taking advantage of their audience and disrespectful. Plus just not something they can afford in environment like YouTube where new potential stars pick up a camera every day.

I guess at the end of the day our opinions come from our experiences, it might be that I'm new to the phandom (only the phandom, not of dan and phil) and they weren't my main source of entertainment before this year, meaning I was a very casual fan that only kept track of their youtube channels, not any other social media, and the fact that I don't watch many live shows if they aren't together in them, I don't know of your experience but you sound like you've been at it longer than I have so we o have different perspectives of the whole situation, it's interesting to hear you say how you felt about them for a while.
I think the only way to know for sure to which of our opinions tend more to be true is to keep a look out on what the future bring us in terms of their channels and attitudes.

achika I also think their baking videos, plus the fact that they're into fandoms, are the main motivation. That's kind of Dan and Phil's annual 'things' to do, make a baking video a year, do PINOF, things like that. Could be more on the side of business, but plenty of youtubers seem to do videos with her, and I don't really see some kind of ulterior motive for it, but then again I don't know any of those youtubers she has done videos with very well.
I can't really see them turning into such a polished way of video making, either, just doesn't feel right with them at all to me. I mean, look at the reaction when Dan posted the book and tour announcement video. They're so much more DIY than Ro (makes sense, though, because of Phil's Master's and because they don't produce as much content as her (who needs a filming team, video editing team, and producers(?))).
I'm not sure where I'm really going with this, but I think the collab fits them enough without wondering if there's more going on based on what Dan and Phil have made before. Haven't they done other cooking videos with Sorted Food or something, too? Doesn't seem too far off when you put that into account.
I would like to know who exactly set it up, though, if it was Ro herself, her management or their management.

I'm guessing Ro management set it up, she does a lot of collabs based on what people ask her to in the comments, I guess her management keeps an eye on it and contacts the right people since sometimes she doesn't seems to know about the person she's collabing really well, more like she read a resume of them and watched like one or two videos before, but it's quite impressive to me the amount of people she manages to collab with.
I somehow can't see their management having even thought of her for a collab with them before, but idk. Just a feeling.

Plus they upload usually half hearted videos like once a month and abandoned a hyped up gaming channel that doesn't really deserve the amount of subs it has. And jfc DAPG could've added years to their current status but they chose a book and tour over that... *headdesk* That's how you kill your YouTube career. Now they've probably peaked and they don't show any signs of wanting to really get back into it so what are we gonna do?
This won't just affect their YouTube career either. The reason they get their little radio and hosting gigs is still us; the dedicated phandom who will support everything they do and watch anything they're in. It's not their skills that's for damn sure.
Yeah I might be a bit more dramatic and pessimistic than what the current situation calls for rn but let me live. I had a day.

I really don't agree with you here, I understand the frustration with the lack of content and the fear that they are relying too much on something that can be quick to disappear but I believe that they still work hard on their content and they are aware that youtube can go away really quickly. Yes they are more comfortable in the support of their fanbase but I still think they put a lot of effort in their videos.
Let's talk about how long they spent editing, the effort they put on camera angles, how much they think about each idea and construct that idea into a video that can be enjoyed by so many. And they genuinely seem to love DAPG, they just are very different from other gaming youtubers but I, for one, really like that about them and I wish they never become like pewdiepie or other gamers that just produce massive loads of content with mildly offensive behavior and little thought to what the audience really wants because they may hit the right spot in one or two videos per week while putting about 2 videos out a day where you turn on a camera, scream a bit and put it online.
I'll take anyday one video per month that's 'them' over two videos a week that are fillers with barely any thought just to make the money to survive. They have really engaging personalities, they work hard when they have a project because they aren't content with putting out something that's half done and that's what has been working so well for them.
Comparing their productivity to another youtuber's is a moot point too, we all know how they work and we got into this aware of that and we stayed for our love, we might get angry but saying that:

is a bit unfair. That bit especially irks me, they have skills and that's for sure, the phandom might attract the eyes of a lot of companies but no way a place like bbc would employ them if they didn't have work ethic and skills, especially a place that is based off on a lot of regulars listeners that might stop giving their audience if the content becomes shit just to bring some casual listeners once in a while. You can see how they grown up in the last years, how they have become better at each radio day, more entertaining, speaking more fluently, working on expressing their opinions, working to solve problems that happen on air and just making the whole thing work.
Their videos have grown too, from equipment used (learning to use lights, to make the right choice in camera angles, putting on more characters to tell a history, buying props, learning if a scripted video is better than a non-scripted, learning what their audience really likes to watch, how they learned and bettered their editing skills...) none of it screams lack of interest to me.
Now, this isn't an attack on you but I think it's incredibly easy to fall into this angry mindset because of the drought we're experiencing but you have to take a step back and breathe for a while, yes they are putting out less content, yes some of it might be rushed and yes they might be doing a big misstep by not doing the live shows but it doesn't mean that they just don't care anymore/don't respect us. We all know they have (and always had) this tendency to produce less if something is going on but we like them for their way of being and even for how private they are (even if sometimes we get angry about it) how much do we want these things to change and how much it would affect how the fans react to them? We just had the discussion about how people fall less in love with daily vloggers and that applies to people who start to produce mass content/pay someone to edit things for them and how it affects their following of dedicated fans.
You have every right to be angry at their less than stellar uploading schedule but it's unfair to say they don't care about their audience, their content/skills and that they don't put out effort into connecting with us anymore.
This also isn't a excuse, I agree that they should have pre-filmed more things and kept up with live shows and I'm angry for it, but I do take a step back if what I start thinking of their temporary attitudes clashes with what I think and love about them because I'll know it isn't true.

the last one i'm gonna let it slide because even if don't think anything they do is that hard to come up with i do find their videos entertaining and i'm here in the trashcan, so hey, whatever, let's pretend that takes a lot of time, but yes please let's talk about camera angles and complicated editing because i don't see any of that
most of their videos are a camera on a tripod, end of the story, the ones that aren't (sketches mostly) use one or two angles (when it's a conversation for example) per scene, how is any of that a complicated setup?
related to that, their editing is extremely simple to do, they are not filmmakers that have to put together a scene that uses 8 angles because there's 3 people talking and you also have to include close ups of a random cat in the background for some reason, they just have to listen to themselves talk and cut out the parts they don't want, add some funny text and an end card and that's it done, editing always takes a ridiculous amount lot of time, but what they do specifically is the most basic shit you can do
i feel like i should probs say that i am communications student so yeah i actually do edit videos i'm not waffling about shit i know nothing about lol
btw, something i really admire from their videos is how genuinely funny they are, that's coming from me, a person who has never made a joke in her life, so yeah there's that, but their video quality is nothing especial imo

you need work ethics and skills to get any job in this world, there's a shit ton of people that know enough to host a radio show, and there's a shit ton that know more than them, the reason they have one and other people don't is because they have an audience, the reason they get any of the opportunities they get is because they have an audience, if they use the opportunity that gives them to make connections in the industry (and i'm sure they did, they are smart boys) they could probably deal with loosing their crazy obsessive fanbase and just become normal radio hosts, but the only reason they got there on the first place was their audience, i talked about the radio show, but this applies to everything else
i'm not saying they are awful at their jobs, but they are very very comfortable in their position on youtube and put a lot less effort towards that part of their career than the average youtuber (who btw usually also has side projects and brand deals and stuff to deal with, they are not special snowflakes), and i think that's a huge mistake
that's especially frustrating when you realize that what most people are angry about isn't the lack of oh so difficult to produce youtube videos but the fucking just-sit-and-waffle-for-an-hour-for-money liveshows
so yeah tl,dr: (imo) they are lazy youtubers with average content that somehow manage to have one of the biggest audiences bc they have engaging personalities and some of us really want to know if they're fucking or nah
and i admire them for having that system work for them but i'm interested to see how long they can keep it up

I'm really enjoying this discourse. I like it when people get all debate-y.
The viewer-creator relationship is complicated. I tend to believe that D+P don't owe us anything, but at the same time they do owe us in order to keep our attention.
I think that I care more about quality than quantity, so if there's anything that's really been annoying me recently its the decline in quality. Yet things like the Undertale series have been consistent so i'm not totally disappointed.
I also wanted to say that the podcast is great! It was really engaging and interesting.
I'm just bored and I can't think about a good thing to discuss. Can deppy please do a liveshow or put out a video sooner than next week please? Question for the old members- is this the longest content drought that's ever happened with deppy?

Ofcourse there is something else that pays going on. Not only do they get money from the YouTube content, but they are also receiving it from the book, the tour and the app. They can actually get by without making videos a lot even though that's really really bad. Why YouTube red let them have there tour movie and making of the tour on a site they upload to only a few times a month, I'll never know. You would think out of everything, them having a YouTube red original would be a reinforcement to upload even more, but for some reason, it's not.
I don't wanna end this on a cynical note so I will say this, I actually expect some content next week. I can understand taking a week off after traveling for two months, but any longer... Also lowkey hoping for a live show on Sunday but my expectations are barely even there.

(inspired by him blurring his nipples in his most recent videos) He shows them in "5 Kinds of Drunk People" and I think that's it. Even in the Jamaica footage he hides them most of the time. i'm actually rather optimistic about this drought. it's been discussed that their personas won't hold up a few years down the road and that there is a change on the horizon or whatever.
if there was a good time for them to make a drastic change it would actually be now. once the tour is officially over, I'm guessing everything from the book and everything else that stemmed from it would make them pretty financially independent for a while where they wouldn't have to depend on their usual videos or weekly radio shows to maintain their lifestyle.
that and a pretty significant fanbase would mean a lot more creative freedom. it would mean the opportunity to try different paths and creative projects and maybe find something that would be a bit more stable in the long run.
and in the end I agree with the quality over quantity idea and I have also been over the last few individual channel videos (especially on dan's end) where the quality has sunk down to more of a scream-y, loud vibe that reminds me a lot of stereotypical fangirls
one thing you hear a lot from them other creators is that the best way to make videos is to make something you would like to watch. obviously I don't know them personally but based on what they've shown us I could see them watching their 2013-2014 videos in 2013-2014 but I'd like to think that they have changed at least a bit in the last few years and as the difference between them in videos vs in more casual settings grows, I can't help but feel like they wouldn't watch their videos anymore and have just started making videos that they think their fans want to see

I think him censoring his nipples in the anime vid was a joke poking fun at the fact that women's nipples are censored but mens are not.
Aside from that I think Dan used to be quite insecure about his body and I definitely think he covered himself a lot in the Jamaica footage due to insecurity. But I think he's a lot more self-confident now

Ohhhh, I have always wanted this to be brought up, because I used to have a theory that Dan has a nubbin (the surprisingly common, teeny-tiny, third nipple). Why? Because, when shirtless, he'd always cross his arm over his chest the same way and, I can't pin-point it now, but I feel like one of his videos had him pulling up a blanket to reveal maltesers and it was there? There's also a video somewhere where he states "I don't have a third nipple" with a defensive undertone (that I probably imagined).
In any case, the theory was developed on a night where I was especially bored and feeling silly. I think I eventually concluded that it was just a mole. However, given the circumstances of recent nipple-blurring, perhaps that's not the case.
As for the discussion being had outside of this, I agree with those who are saying D&P are skating by with sub-part content and posting. I've said it a billion times, but the US tour was the nail in the coffin for me. An opportunity to really put out unique, interesting videos/tweets/posts that really wouldn't have needed any work at all - their forte - and they still didn't do shit. I'm honestly just here because I've fallen too far into the trashcan. I mean seriously I just wrote about Dan's non-existent 3rd nipple.
The point starlight-still made about hearing what goes on behind the scenes strikes a chord with me as I'm always interested to hear that including how much they have to do with meetings, planning, setting things up, crafting a brain or big D and all that. They've occasionally mentioned things and especially when they seem quiet to us, it's not only interesting, but maybe also helpful for the relationship/divide if they let us know what's going on like that. Up to them ofc, we already know they like certain things private (tbh on that front I didn't know they were so like that when I first became a fan, but I also didn't expect it, I just got more interested quite quickly).
Interesting people have mentioned not being able to finish a Jacksepticeye video. I love him thanks to his tumblr account but have also barely watched him. There's a massive draw of personality over the content of the games they play as I feel the same sbout Pewds and Markiplier, though Jack is my fave. I also have don't watch many other people than deps or Louise if a video is much longer than 5 minutes (same with books and PC games, it's hook or lose), but go a few days without rewatching any of deps' videos and then smile like a loon thanks to that "sentences" clipfest. They do have the power to make people laugh, smile, groan and cringe (in a good way).
