TW for mention of Bill Cosby and sexual assault, incase anyone wants to skip over this post
Oooh I am so here for this discussion. Dan, Phil, Yeezy, and feminism. All topics of interest for me.
I'll preface this by saying I'm a Kanye-stan, I love all of his albums, I think his music is incredible, and I think he's put out some really important, insightful songs (see: Yeezus album).
That said, dude is definitely problematic.
spaceguitar wrote:I feel like the 'famous' music video is an interesting topic. I've kind of gotten into Kanye and I don't see him as very problematic. The Bill Cosby tweet was shit, but I also don't know what he meant by it. Does he actually believe that Bill Cosby is innocent? I have no idea.
I actually think he genuinely believes Bill Cosby is innocent. In addition to the infamous BILL COSBY INNOCENTTTT!!!!! tweet, in the Famous song he actually raps "do anybody feel bad for Bill Cosby?!"
When I heard that line, oh my god. Why Kanye, WHY.
Eve if he doesn't think Cosby is innocent, and is only talking shit for attention, it's still super fucked up and offensive to sexual assault victims everywhere.
I am so TORN right now because I watched that video and was SO HAPPY and fully planned on coming over here and gushing about how hilarious and adorable Danyul was because I'm GARBAGE. I mean, come on:

Plus the little sassy hand thing after that. Ugh this vid is a goldmine of adorable campy Dan moments. I loved it so much.
But this has been dampened a lil bit by that Kanye tweet! Come on Dan that vid was messed up. Another example of Kanye doing something "edgy" or "arty" without considering wider social issues.
Butttt everyone on earth has said problematic things before, it's 100% guaranteed, it's a learning process for everyone. I first started learning about feminism almost 10 years ago, I've studied it at uni, and I'm sure I still have so much to learn. We're allowed to have slip ups every now and then. I think Dan either is choosing to not mention the problematic aspect of the vid or he just genuinely hasn't thought through all of the issues properly
