I'm glad Dan isn't making this into a giant sob fest of thankfulness because ~controversial opinion~ DINOF has been shit and he has barely delivered any quality on that channel since the last milestone. I just can't say that he deserves this milestone and I feel a bit shitty for saying that, but if I'd say 'Wow I'm so proud of Dan he has worked so hard for this' I'd just be lying to myself. Though I guess you could say that that should mean that sarcasm over the 'achievement' is especially out of place. Anyway, yeah, not impressed with the 6M. Sorry not sorry.

As for Phil, I guesss it sucks that the gap between them is as big as it is but 4M is too high for the AP channel in it's current state. It's filler update videos, awkward collabs (they rarely ever work for him, the one with Caspar is actually painful and the one with Hazel was just plain bad) and yet another video with Dan on there. I'm not opposed to the vids with Dan obviously, God knows I enjoy their collabs more than their solo content, but when all the most viewed videos on your channel are collabs with one specific person it looks... sad. And bad to potential sponsors. I'm just kinda over people feeling sorry for Phil not being as popular as Dan because in reality Phil can't really be arsed to do something about it either.

A sarcastic tweet from Dan doesn't mean he doesn't care. Honestly, after last year's tweet about hitting five mil, it doesn't surprise me. But I feel like it needs to be understood that the excitement of gaining subscribers can wear off after awhile. He tweeted for almost every milestone, small to big with a ton of excitement. It doesn't surprise me that after awhile he just got less excited since it's bound to happen anyways. It's kinda like when you get A's on a report card, your parents and you are always so proud for the first couple times, but after awhile, it becomes the norm and the excitement of seeing the A's goes away since it's so normal to see.

Also it could very possibly be that Dan just simply doesn't care about the number of subscribers. The number of subscribers don't mean much. Just because 6 mil people are subscribed to him, doesn't mean those are active accounts. Jugding by the numbers on his videos, which are only between 1-4 mil (depending on the video), I really doubt all his videos are watched by all the people subscribed to him. What really matters is the number of people willing to actively watch the content and get more involved with the fandom which helps bring more people in to actively watch him.

But that's just all my opinion, for all we know Dan could just be a complete ass that doesn't care about his fans and just acts like he does. But I really doubt that as he does seem to care a lot.

I do think that Dan is smart enough to know, that while having 6 million subscribers is fun, it’s not what ultimately counts. I mean Zoella is nearing 11 million and most of her vids don’t even hit 3 million. The most important thing are the views imo.

Yup, bad lighting. The pic looks grainy because of the artifacts / noise created by the camera in its attempt to adjust for low light levels (and no flash.) Dan could have helped by using his screen as a discreet light source. Bad Dan

I feel bad about saying this- I know people want a more 'grown up'/ off brand Phil. That tweet just reminds me of when my grandfather makes some sort of weirdly sexual comment/ joke to me (not in a super creepy way, but in a please don't kinda way). I'm not saying that Phil is a grandfather- I don't mean to discriminate against his age- that's just how that tweet feels to me.

And as a follow up: didn't really find Dans tweet funny. His one last year was much better. That was much more simple sarcasm/ understatement? and had people freaking out. This is a bit over the top and I don't know how to read his tone- I do

But isn't this the definition of unappreciative? When good things keep happening so you just expect the good things and don't appreciate them when they do happen?
I don't think he is actually unappreciative, I think he is just endlessly sarcastic and self-deprecating. He's the same when people try and compliment his hair/appearance. He doesn't want to just accept it and say thank you, he always tries to mitigate good things somehow. But unfortunately for him, he's tweeting to 3 and a half million followers - sometimes the best thing you can say is thank you.

I don't know if I necessarily agree with this attitude so I try not to take part. There are many, many people who love Phil's content - he doesn't need any pity subs and I'm not sure he'd appreciate them. If I genuinely like something he makes I say so & I like the video, I'm not going to like the video or say I do if I don't just because 'poor Phil has less than Dan'. So Phil has fewer subscribers than Dan, so what - maybe fewer people like his content, no big deal, he still has a fanbase way more engaged than the likes of Zoella and he still has plenty of people who love him. You just have your minds in that gutter and frankly, why? It doesn't have to be sexual so why try to make it so? It could be possible he compares himself with other youtubers that have a good upload schedule, and better produced content but nowhere near his subscriber count.

I am happy that he didn't give much attention to this milestone. If he did it will only fuel the phandom's campaign for Phil to reach the same number of subs and his haters who think that Dan doesn't deserve his 6m subs. What does 6m subs mean these days, any way? But I think a simple thank you is needed because not everyone will get his sarcasm.

It's sad that Phil doesn't have the same number of subs but it doesn't mean he's not appreciated. His views are doing good for a 3.6m subs. Also, Phil's content, except for his collabs with Dan, is really an acquired taste. The campaign for his 3m was cringe worthy for me because it felt like people need to sub because they pity him. There are people like me who genuinely like his videos. They shouldn't discredit us. Also, Phil is a grown-up. He knows how youtube works so he's likely unaffected by the subs difference. It is easy (perhaps fickle?) to hit the "Subscribe" button - it takes all of a second, and in the end, doesn't pay the bills. Subscriber count is more important early in a channel / YouTuber's "career" when trying to build a viewer base as it reflects relative popularity/appeal, but once established, the brand takes over and drives the views (that and clever titling / collabs with the *right* people.) Views (and audience demographics) determine how much they get paid. Views are the metric to watch.

I actually think their content is great. Yeah sure they rehash ideas, and the ideas they come up with for videos may have been done before or may not be original. But they make everything entertaining. I can't even sit through videos by most if not all other YouTubers. They are naturally very funny, interesting and likable people and for me this puts their content way above other YouTubers. It is also obvious they put a lot of effort into what they put out. I would say deserve all their current subscribers - but they could have even more if they uploaded consistently

I have so many conflicting responses, this will probably be all over the place.

I don't think Dan works especially hard at his youtube channel. His content (besides the exam video) isn't subpar compared to other youtubers, it's just the frequency with which he posts. So I guess it depends on if you feel someone "deserves" a milestone because they work hard, or because they work smart, or just happen to be really lucky. Either way, I do think he's unappreciative but I also think it's a natural response. Dan getting six million subs is like being in school and half-assing a paper then getting an A because you're the teacher's pet. And maybe he's unappreciative because he realizes that he'll keep climbing in popularity for reasons not entirely based on his work ethic. But even if his sub count isn't a reflection of hard work, it's still a reflection of an audience that supports him, so I'm sure it gives him some warm fuzzies no matter if he's getting mushy on twitter or not.

I don't feel sorry for Phil for having less subs. I'm sure it bothers him to a certain extent but in terms of job status he's still riding a pretty high wave with success/financial stability/worldwide appreciation. I also think he probably celebrates Dan's success as his own (and vice versa, when it happens) because everything they do is a behind the scenes collab, even solo channel videos. Dan's spoiler video? Phil's idea. Phil's Australia video? Originally on dinof. Anything with the book/tour making of? They just pick a channel to plop it onto. Even if Dan wrote his own roast, Phil helped film it and apparently also helped edit it. They share the workload between their three channels, so I hope they share the pride in them as well.

The campaign for his 3m was cringe worthy for me because it felt like people need to sub because they pity him.

The worst and most hilarious thing about that campaign was that it went on for a few months. Like people created a new hashtag every week to push Phil over 3M and it just wasn't happening, so as time went by all those posts and tweets only got cringier and more embarrassing.

The phandom is overprotective of Phil and many feel the need to pity him for every opportunity Dan gets because of that. Meanwhile Phil is living the good life, sipping Ribena in his nice ass London flat with a Macbook on his laptop and all his money in the bank because he never spends it.

They are in the process of broadening their appeal into different forms of media, and they are succeeding at it. Sooner or later, the mass of 12-17 year olds (or the upcoming 12-17 demo) who make up most of their market will find them too "old" to be #relateable, and they need to gain experience, develop skills and make contacts for that inevitability.

I agree with this wholeheartedly. There's no reason Phil should have 4mil yet, but I know over the coming year or so he'll work towards it. I feel like he has a lot planned... As long as he doesn't spend 5 videos talking about the book, or tour, or seven second challenge. Yikes.
I also agree with dizzy that Phil sees this milestone as a shared success. To me, the people who feel sorry for him have good intentions but are just making things worse by drawing attention to the lack of balance. It's not like they're actually making him feel any better, they're just making themselves feel better, and that's fine. Like dizzy said, deppy help each other with literally everything, so they share the success as well.

I saw it in the morning too and I take it as a joke. Everyone was busy trying to create one funny hashtag to congrats Dan to beat last year's get a dog thing. Then, someone probably comes up with congrats Phil because it's kinda funny (to think) that Dan is the one who hit a milestone but the hashtag is about Phil. A bit immature, but funny nevertheless. I believe there is no 'poor Phil' sentiment behind it.

I agree seriously what counts it's not how many subs they have now, they are relevant enough to still catch the eye of those that count, what matters is the views, the phandom dedication. While it's nice to see that number rise it's nothing important.
I'm also pragmatic enough to think that not always good content=subs or the contrary, come one zoella is over 10mil while pj is now over 1mil. Also at the end good contect is subjective, I don't care much about the absence of a schedule (even if I would love more content) and I see max 5 youtubers, that they managed to make me like their content, subscribe here, means that they are interesting for me and this is what counts for me.

Yup i feel like this well intended appreciate Phil day must come across a bit awkward to him. Things are what they are. Apprentice Dan might have overtaken master Phil in subs thanks to those excellent editing tips, i don't think it really impacts their relationship. Right now they are doing a month long tour together, selling out huge venues in Australia and their upload schedule is looking very 'lol we have channels?'

If it's any consolation, deep in the night i was looking for their companies' public financial reports and they are killing it

I agree, this tag and the #getPhilto3M (or whatever it was) last year just seemed insincere to me, I feel like some people in the phandom feel obligated to show some appreciation to Phil everytime Dan reaches a milestone. I don't know if I would like that forced appreciation if I were Phil.

Also, I'm not aware if it's been said or not but I don't think Dan or Phil care about getting more subscribers than they already have cause, in my opinion, if they were they would try a bit harder with their channels/videos. I mean, they're getting enough views and responses on social media with the subs count they have so they must be not intrested in having more than they already have (which, to me, is already pretty good).
