All of these things have already been said, so I'll be brief.

I loved the new craft video. It might help that I'm newer to D&P and haven't had as much time to become sick of the crafting, lol. Loved the weird vibe and greatly admire their ability to keep a straight face.

Joining in with all the rest - I'd love to hear more about Phil! I've read lots of analysis of Dan in my lurking, but not nearly as much about Phil

I loved the craft video. As palpable said it had that twist of adult swim humor I really appreciate-like a toss up between the Tim and Eric Awesome show and Mr. Show, where it skates the border of humorous, bizarre and truly creepy. It's tongue in cheek and purposefully over the top. and even though it mimicks the vibe of last year's video I still think it's new and different enough that it didn't come off as formulaic at all. It's one of those things that's a one off, uploaded to a channel they know we all know won't be likely to see any more traffic for the rest of the year as far as uploads go and it's a call back to a ridiculous inside joke even if the tagline was overplayed within the first few days the original craft video was uploaded, (and will likely be again this year) but I think that's what makes it even funnier, playing on the exasperation of people who were fed up with it just for it to be revived again in another form on April Fool's. (which aligns perfectly with what Dan himself once said of liking to revisit jokes and memes other people have expressed they're already tired of seeing just for kicks.)

and the channel has become it's own milestone in a way so maybe they didn't want to ignore it completely, but I agree if this becomes a tradition every year it'll take away the impact if everyone comes to expect it. (although I don't feel that way with pinof, maybe because it's become such a seminal feature of their channels over the years and ties into their partnership with each other? Like a physical representation of the brand that is Dan and Phil as a professional duo and best friends? I don't know. Pinof always feels like a nostaligc reunion and the craft channel feels more like that joke which is hilarious the first couple of times you tell it to friends but then just fades with every re-telling until it's just, 'harold, for god's sake we heard this one already.' did that make sense? I haven't eaten anything yet and may be slightly delirious, I'm sorry.)

Also liked the little references to last year's video to keep continuity as if they really are guys who regularly upload crafty tutorials. Then Phil just smacking the glitter with determined enthusiasm (smack dat paper) and Dan's pentagram which just reminded me of the story he told about having the habit when he was younger of dotting his 'i's' with pentagrams, even doing that with his name on his visa which made his mother angry. [psychoanalysis]Dan secretly wants to be a dark wizard[/psychoanalysis]

All in all, I think it was a nice trip back into the twilight zone that was the original crafts video and definitely a nice reminder of the old school Phil days like alittledizzy said, where he towed the line of absurd and just a bit dark.

(I know I should have made an intro post first, but I really wanted to chime in about the vid and thank Delta for the invite here. It's like a breath of fresh air honestly..)

Cute video! I was half asleep though, watching it, because I had just woken up. I'm not that annoyed with the don't cry, craft comments because of the sheer fact you can find them on almost every video with a good amount of views.

Aha! The plot chickens thickens (sorry I'm so late to the party, I just wanted to make that joke so bad )

I loved the video! The deadpan deliveries, the creepy vibes, the left-handed jokes, the pentagram and that part where they slam their hands on the paper to mix the glitter (bi glitter confirmed?)

It's mid workday for me so this will not actually be an essay, but the bullet points of it: I think Phil is really good at analyzing situations and has a pretty keen business oriented mind, which means at some point fairly early on in his and Dan's rise he was clever enough to note what was making other youtubers popular and realize that his sense of humor fit into much more of a niche than a mainstream appeal. But I think he also realized that collaborations with Dan did have that mainstream appeal, because Dan - for all that he was drawn to Phil's weirdness - is just not weird in the same way and he tempers that in Phil.

So Phil seems to have taken the things that fans responsed to most when he was with Dan and rebranded (*heh crafts) AmazingPhil with that in mind, years and years ago. People respond to quirky-sidekick, they respond to his optimism in the face of Dan's existential crisis persona. Phil is the guy who reads Stephen King and horror movies, who made dark/psychotic horror videos for fun, who won a game of Cards Against Humanity against a room full of youtubers - I think his non-persona humor is a lot more close to Dan's persona-humor and it would be a really weird balance for them to be too similar on camera. I think people be unsettled by too much of that. Right now the gaming videos are sort of a halfway limbo point but it only works when Dan meets him halfway by being less dinof, too. People don't like it when things stay the same for too long, but they're also terrified of too much change.

And as for as AmazingPhil solo: I think he just knows that he can't be more of himself on camera and retain the audience, and I think he's right. I think the real Phil would be too random, too odd, too weird in a not polished way that people would expect from him. He's not quite good enough to be famous for being offbeat but he's too offbeat to be mainstream while still acting himself. People want him to be sunshine and sweetness with an occasional innuendo, they just want to believe more that it's real. I don't think he will outright rebrand unless he leaves youtube, I just think he'll (eventually) tone down the parts of the AP schtick that seem too obvious and hope people are happy with that.

Also I was going to talk about this but then I never really got around to that point and I need to get back to work, but I love it so I'm sticking it here anyway.

I agree with so much of this, actually. Especially with your point of him being too offbeat to be mainstream because I mean, look at the reactions to Phil in these crafts videos. It's mixed reviews of "he was fantastic omg" and "I find him creepy can he stop". Also your point about his non-persona humor being similar to Dan's, I always think of those youtubers who say they're like the same person. Persona-wise, that description is "lol wut? they don't seem the same at all??" but danandphilgames makes that idea more clear just because it's *a little* more laid back. But Dan still gives Phil The Look™ so. smh.

Love this!
I certainly agree with this. With so many people commenting on how similar they are, I figure there has to be some truth to that. I’m sure his sense of humor is quite dark, and that his weird mind is probably not compatible with most people.
Saying that, I don’t completely think that his AP persona is manufactured. I think that too is a side of him, just over exaggerated. After all, people have many layers and are not just one sided. I do think that he likes animals, mismatched socks and some more ‘childish’ things, but at the same time have a very dark sense of humor. I wish I could all explain my thoughts more eloquently, but this will have to do.

Absolutely agree. I don't think anything about either of their on-screen personalities is completely manufactured. That's kind of what I meant by Phil having taken what people responded to most, particularly when he was with Dan, and whittling AmazingPhil down into an amalgamation of those things - most of which happened to be the brighter, positive parts of him that stood out most in counterpart to Dan's whole tumblr-dark-edgy-aesthetic vibe. People like the ying yang thing, they like opposites attracting.

It was a hard work but I finally managed to read the new posts!

Anyway I loved the video and maybe I'm weird but...I didn't find it creepy? Like I wasn't invested in them last April and when I finally saw the " craft, don't cry" I was feeling "unconfortable" ? Now with this one I laughed out loud. And also maybe ,it's because I don't interact with the Phandom, but I find it funny their constant spanning , I don't know it's a mix between being amazed by the dedication and also me being a sadic

One of the things that I loved about the April Fool's video was the generic vlogging ukelele music in the background that literally every Gleamer uses, some subtle shade thrown there. ;) I think one of the things that does make them so entertaining it just how self-aware they are of their own fandom. From the exaggerated 'FRIENDSHIP', to the hand touching, to the choice of the red and blue glitter.... I'm guessing that they'e seen those 'I was red and you were blue' romantic fanedits on Tumblr. They know exactly what they are doing and I love it. The editing on this has made me more convinced than ever that Dan or Phil might actually be danisnotonfirevyou1.
Also can Phil please wear his glasses all the time, he looks so good here ugh. I am hella attracted to Phil in general when he's being more himself, I love the weird, twisted side of his personality.

I'm a pretty jaded person but that dumb video made my heart hurt a little, oh my God. I really have to remind myself that I don't ship real people anymore when I see the pair of them. I think because that song makes me emotional already since they used it in that advert for the Winnie the Pooh movie.

Great thoughts! A+

I think Phil, long ago, realized that stuff like "The Basket" and Phillipa would forever brand him as a weird niche. Trouble is tho, tempering his obvious weird/creative side has left his AP video's boring and very milquetoast. In that way Phil is TOO aware.

For those of us fans of Phil who were around "when Phil was Phil" it's odd to watch his really banal, inoffensive videos now as compared to the bawdy, odd, quirky, slightly dark Phil videos from 8 years ago. The contrast is extreme. Phil has privated, by my personal recollection, MANY videos that I remember were on his channel in 2008 (before the first big privating binge he went on in 2010) and that Phil bears no similarity to the AP we see before us. IN a way Phil dommed himself to be forever Dan's sidekick by subverting his own persona.

Good stuff .

I absolutely ADORED this video! I actually had tears of laughter. It's 100% Tim and Eric Adult Swim humor (which is even funnier to me because I know so much of the fandom won't get it). There were so many perfectly executed moments, like the stumbling of protips, the violent lingering hand slaps, snide comments (everyone makes mistakes!), uncomfortable zooms, diy music, "why does this keep happening?"...

I'm going to be controversial here and say that this kicks the shit out of last year's craft video.

I'm totally not surprised that there are 5 new pages since this morning when the video came out. Hah.
I'll be brief, I guess. I really liked the video, and I felt a bit guilty at first when thinking about the fact that they probably will feel obligated to continue to the crafting videos in the future... but when I really thought about it, they TOTALLY did not have to do another crafting video, nobody was necessarily expecting them to, they could have done something completely different for April fools' day.

Also, as alittledizzy brought up, I like this side of Phil... the creepy and less "cutesy" side of him reminds me of his one short film entry that he made FOREVER ago... He is really creative.
That one fake laugh Phil did scared me, though. That's what he looks like when he genuinely laughs. Maybe... maybe Phil isn't as bad at acting as we all thought.
Uh oh.

But overall, funny video! I really did like it. Yay!

I agree with this so much. I remember making a post about Phil on GG and I posed the question if Phil did rebrand and show his true personality what videos could he make? No one really responded and that's because there is no response. There is not a video style that would be able to encapsulate Phil in all his strange glory and still be mainstream and popular, It just doesn't fit with today's audience. Today the YouTube are all airbrushed over smiling mannequins that do collabs and tags with fake smiles and little heart. When Phil began youtube it was a different place. The audience had an acquired taste for the strange and Phil fit right in. Then with the emergence of gleamers and a younger audience base Phil wasn't that cool anymore. He stuck out like a sore thumb to the new youtubers. That is when he realized he needed to change his content. He had to stay alive because youtube is something I feel is very dear to Phil. He shows his appreciation to his fans because we essentially mean alot to him. Look at his tumblr and twitter and see how he appreciates every little fan art we make.

One thing that makes me apreciate and respect Phil is that he changed his content but remained unique in that change. He still remained a little strange and a little different We might all hate AP because he doesn't seem real or genuine and because we know the great contrast of the persona to Phil Lester but we have to appreciate that he never compromised it for popularity. While the other youtubers went mainstream with their content he individualized his channel. Hell he created the tags that made others famous. I agree that Phil tom seems very calculating, he has already planned the years ahead of him and knows how to keep himself famous for as long as he wants. The AP persona is his way right now. The adorable sinammon roll does appeal to alot of his main audience even though us older audience want something more. I hope he can grow a bit from it and become dark again but I think its more beneficial if he doesn't. Every step Dan and Phil make is very calculated especially now with all the popularity they have. A step in the extreme would be dire. If he and Dan want a break from persona then they would have to kill Phan (the brand) first. We can't have angel Phil in the collabs and Weird/dark Phil in his channel. What I'm getting at is its hard for AP to change, he already has a niche audience on his channel and his videos who know him for AP. Read the comment made by phandom members on his old videos and see how turned off and creeped out they are.

I find Phil to be hilarious and have a great dark sense of humour but sadly the only way he can show that with the current branding is in the gaming channel where we see the "sass masta from manchesta" 8-) come alive. I'm happy with that for now, I know all that Phil is capable of and am proud of how far he has come. His childlike persona has garnered 3 mill subscribers (and growing) which is a big feat for something that is so different from the others. I will wait or the gradual change and the occasional sarcasm/sass from AP he will eventually need to grow up and I will stick around until it happens

No other touring artist ever goes anywhere else so they definitely wouldn't. Australia is significantly harder to get around than the US so maybe not even Perth or Adelaide. There aren't a lot of other places in Australia that justify renting out a theatre and could guarantee a large audience - except for Canberra and Darwin (but no one goes to those places)
first time posting but long time lurker oOOooo
(i'm enjoying the vibe of this forum more tbh)

honestly speaking i wouldn't be surprised if they skipped every other city but sydney (considering it's more popular than the actual capital of australia)
but i guess if tyo and colleen/miranda could come to adelaide then a girl can ~only dream~

(sorry this is v late and probably v irrelevant now also i still need to catch up on like 5 pages)
