so on the subject of psycho-analysing Phil, i was doing research on psychopathy to prove my point that Emma Blackery is one and apparently to recognize a psycho:
-Psychopaths have "black-leather toughness" combined with boyish innocence
-they embody incongruity
-they exude a subtle but definite air of confidence and superiority
-they need little sleep (sleepless night with Phil)
-they sometimes exhibit unconvincing emotional response
-they will drop hints of their true nature but in veiled manner (perv Phil, scary Phil...)
-they have deviant sexual behaviours (#fury, no judging tho)
-they can exhibit flashes of contempt
-they have poor sense of smell (lol)
-they invade your personal space (touchy Phil)
-they have an eerily calm demeanor
-they have a saintly aura (precious innocent cinnamon bun Philly)
-they have little to no body odor (did someone smell Phil?)

what do we think?

definitely an interesting comparison, but neither emma nor phil really come close to being a psychopath. especially being so in the public eye and being viewed as 'idols'/'youtube sensations' which would be a psychopath's #1 top nightmare.

unless they're both extremely talented actors in which case sign them up for a hollywood blockbuster and lock your back doors at night.

ok more seriously, one thing I realized about Phil is his use of innuendos and inappropriate sexual jokes.

On one hand, he uses innuendos because it's his humour and he thinks its funny especially since he knows most of his audience will either not understand or be like "awwwww he is so innocent he doesn't understand" and I think he gets a kick out of it. He actually said it in this video of the stream they did w PJ at SITC that someone posted here recently: "i like to make things sound dirty when they are not".
And since, as Dan said once, he doesn't like crudeness, he always uses very tongue-in-cheek and usually very clever cheeky innuendos that kinda leave you feel "did he just?" "did he mean it that way?". Anyway that is kind of the "normal" use of sexual jokes.

But on the other hand he also resort to very weird inappropriate or sexual jokes when he feels uncomfortable or is at loss of what to say.
I remember it shocked me once on the radio show, i think they were talking about Cheryl Cole and it was a fast transition and Dan asked Phil what he would do about something and he said he would rub Cheryl Cole all other his face or something, to which Dan answered "you had to go full-on restraining order didn't you".
And it made me realize that Phil does that quite a lot actually, when he doesn't know what to say or is thrown off out of his comfort zone, he will usually say something randomly sexual and weird, as if to make the other people uncomfortable too.

Now i am not sure what that means, if he is just dirty and when in doubt he goes sexual, if it's a power dynamic like since I am uncomfortable, I will make you uncomfortable too. Idk, but i think it is quite interesting

It's mid workday for me so this will not actually be an essay, but the bullet points of it: I think Phil is really good at analyzing situations and has a pretty keen business oriented mind, which means at some point fairly early on in his and Dan's rise he was clever enough to note what was making other youtubers popular and realize that his sense of humor fit into much more of a niche than a mainstream appeal. But I think he also realized that collaborations with Dan did have that mainstream appeal, because Dan - for all that he was drawn to Phil's weirdness - is just not weird in the same way and he tempers that in Phil.

So Phil seems to have taken the things that fans responsed to most when he was with Dan and rebranded (*heh crafts) AmazingPhil with that in mind, years and years ago. People respond to quirky-sidekick, they respond to his optimism in the face of Dan's existential crisis persona. Phil is the guy who reads Stephen King and horror movies, who made dark/psychotic horror videos for fun, who won a game of Cards Against Humanity against a room full of youtubers - I think his non-persona humor is a lot more close to Dan's persona-humor and it would be a really weird balance for them to be too similar on camera. I think people be unsettled by too much of that. Right now the gaming videos are sort of a halfway limbo point but it only works when Dan meets him halfway by being less dinof, too. People don't like it when things stay the same for too long, but they're also terrified of too much change.

And as for as AmazingPhil solo: I think he just knows that he can't be more of himself on camera and retain the audience, and I think he's right. I think the real Phil would be too random, too odd, too weird in a not polished way that people would expect from him. He's not quite good enough to be famous for being offbeat but he's too offbeat to be mainstream while still acting himself. People want him to be sunshine and sweetness with an occasional innuendo, they just want to believe more that it's real. I was just here agreeing with people's analysis silently because everything that has been said is very relevant and I couldn't say it better, but this comparison with Kyoya!!! Yes! I see it. He knew what he had to do to stay relevant and be successful, so he just used the parts of AP that were more popular and went with it. It's indeed an interesting observation. Seems like it is some kind of defence mechanism that he uses in stressful situations, i never noticed but he actually does that fairly often. Where did this habit came from is a mystery to me, so not much contribution to discussion on my part. It might be a power dynamic thing or a way to mask his insecurities or guy just has dirty mind...

I love the insight, but I don't think it's nearly as calculated as a power play. I just think that when he's nervous or uncomfortable he finds it harder to maintain rigid persona and - particularly with Dan, his security blanket in most situations - resorts to acting how he would any other time with Dan.

But I do think he realizes he's prone to saying weird things when nervous and that's why in most interview situations he seems okay with Dan totally steamrolling and talking on top of him.
