i actually wasn't planning on watching phil's latest video at first, but ended up doing it anyway after seeing some of the comments on here and it wasn't as bad as i expected. i thought it was okay and kind of cute, not something i'll rewatch probably but i didn't think it was bad or anything.

i guess at the moment i'm not really expecting that much of either of them bc the tour ended pretty recently/they still have some stuff with the recording and book being released

oh btw, when i say "wasn't as bad as i expected" i mean that i cringe about things like that super easily lmao. idk what it is but i just have a hard time watching people see or hear what other people say about them or to them. it's kind of hard to explain. but i've always avoided the chat when watching liveshows as well bc of the same reason.

i don't really have much to add to the current discussion, but i'm really enjoying reading it though

Chaps. No time to contribute anything meaningful but I'm loving the discussions over Phil, the meaningless Dan comparisons and the direction they're moving in. Also really brilliant specific responses and addressing other posters which has made the whole thing a conversation rather than shouting into the void with our own opinions as we sometimes do

Also another quick thing to add: Dans 2012 phase helped him greatly, especially with the transformation he went through that was so distinct, even in his content. Phil on the other hand has remained consistent with his online image. Do you think that worked against Phil in the long run? It surely helped Dan because people applaud him for how far he's come yet we don't do the same for Phil even though he's come a long way. He started off this awkward white kid trying to find acceptance in his peers and look how far he's come now. His change was more in 2012 and even now he's a different man then he was in the past. He has become more confident then he used to be. He was scared at calling a hairdresser and now he's performing on stage and slowly putting himself more out there yet we never discuss how far he's come. This could also be related to content appraisal and how people seem more satisfied or dissatisfied with one or the other. Id love to hear more thoughts on this

I liked Phil's video but like many others have stated I also don't watch Phil (or Dan) with the hopes their content is going to challenge me or even because I think it particularly creative or artistic stuff (sorry boys). The only thing I'm looking for when I watch them is 5-10 minutes of mindless entertainment. Which admittedly D&P can deliver for me personally with very very little effort on their part because something about them just gives me warm and fuzzy feelings. I'm an extremely easy to to please fan in their case.

Yes, I like their content but Phil or Dan are not creative or do some special stuff, nothing wrong if I want that I don't see youtube. At the end Phil is not using his degree but imo, like someone said, his project includes being famous and rich (the big brother) , he accomplished that and in no way he is changing the formula that works.

Dan on the other hand... I feel like fatherhood would help him immensely. Even the tweens don't tune into Dan for PG sweetness and light cos they ain't getting that. So even if they didn't relate to parenthood I think Dan on dinof could incorporate that kind of thing into what he already does (imagine... reason why Dan's a fail: left his baby for 2.3 seconds and it shat all up the bathroom wall. Cue Mr Phillip complaining loudly and them worrying they'll never be allowed to rent anywhere ever again).

Either way, from a personal level I would love this and whilst I feel the chances are remote, I hope for this kind of content one day

I understand what you're saying, I just think it's a personal opinion and not a valid widespread critique. And it's definitely not an opinion representative of the fandom. Dan's video "bathing in his own lore" (the memes video) is his most viewed one this year. His second most popular video was reacting his childhood videos, and there's nothing creative or original about that and it's also just Dan reacting to something about himself.

It is fine for people to want different things out of Phil's videos, of course. But it's also not a failing of Phil when he doesn't meet people's individual expectations if what he's doing is a) still widely popular and enjoyed, which this video certainly is - it's at 850k views in less than a day, it'll hit a million in under a couple of days b) what he wants to be making.

This really just takes me back around to my original point: there's no rule that says they have to be about substance. They can just be entertainers and it's not breaking some unspoken rule.

I'm trying so hard not to compare the two of them right now but it's hard.
To me Dan's reacting to childhood videos and the meme one are still different as they both gave some new material or respectively collected a bunch of stuff together in a way that hadn't been done before.

Of course a lot of video ideas on youtube aren't creative (seeing as 90% are stolen/tags/reacting to.. anyway ) but I don't think they need to be? If the execution is good and leaves room for unexpected things to happen, they can be great anyway. In that regard I think the video is a bit too predictable. Anyhow, just an opinion. I'll be here waiting patiently for the next video of his

Here are some things I really liked about this one though (and I agree: more Phil talk yay!):

- him talking about what kind of people he met at 6am. He really does attract weirdos, doesn't he? (I feel you Phil)

Okay, I agree with the second post, and the first one, to some extent. But I also have quite a few problems with it. First, I agree what there are some people who treat D&P's girl friends horribly. But I agree with dizzy that Hazel is an awful example. The whole situation was blown out of proportion by far, there was hardly anyone actually sending her shit. Another thing this post brought up is that because phan is "played up", it's ridiculous to think it's a "phan moment"/proof. What? If D&P are playing phan up, is that what they want? For people to think of it as a "cute phan moment"? You can't ridicule people for believing things if you think Dan and Phil want them to believe it. The post said Dan and Phil use phan to profit. So if everyone listened to the post and stop shipping/"believing" in phan, wouldn't Dan and Phil lose their profit they apparently make off of phan? And unrelated, but that post is edited awfully. It's about phan shippers but then there are random lines about how phan can't be real. And how people shouldn't think it's real or something. It's not very cohesive. (Also, most phan shippers are not set on Dan and Phil being "gay", but alright.)

This. This is what I absolutely love about Phil. I love his spontaneity and humor and it's these little side comments that I find that remind me of what I love so much about him.

On Topic of what people are discussing about his content, it is the same comment over and over again about whether Phil's content has fallen into mediocrity, but hasn't it always been like this? You can't turn around and say that even his older content (though creative and original) was the best of YouTube? It was highbrow, off beat and frankly wouldn't have a place on YouTube today. (I showed my older brother Phil's old video "The Basket" where he laughed through and thought it was hilarious but then said "But I still don't like him." You can't please everybody, either Phil/Dan is "too gay", "not gay enough" and/or "not doing their best" to seemingly everybody).

This little comment feels like the first sentence of a book, it's strangely beautiful and ethereal and it gives me hope. Not that Phil will move on to the big leagues and start making high quality, challenging things but instead makes something that he actually enjoys and says says these strangely meaningful things that put a little joy in my day, because that's why I love him, not for what I expect him to be.

As the animators are basing the mouth movements around the voice acting I imagine it must be computer animated and the fact that the voice acting is done before the main animation suggests that this will be a high budget production (an actual movie/episode). Also because they're not sure it's for the typical "dan and phil target audience" (probably young teens is what they think ) I guess, it's either something for young kids or for adults. I don't know why, but I think it's another Disney film or possibly I'm completely off the mark, who knows? My main question is whether this is for youtuber or if it is mainstream...?

Not to be condescending but I no longer take this phan policing as seriously as I take this out in the open spamming of "phan". I hate reading both and they're both a waste of time. The phandom is completely out of hand, I agree but it is naive to think that these posts are in any way helpful when the phandom is an unconquerable beast. It's up to every individuals responsibility and maturity in how we act. I certainly don't think an individual can control the internet. As fancybum put it eloquently, the phandom loses members but it also gains a lot more and I'm not too concerned about those who leave because that's there own issue (usually it's because of #drama). I personally find all fandoms equally terrible, it is only that the phandom is so large on tumblr and in youtube that allows these kind of people to be the loudest and stand out like a sore thumb. I wish the phandom existed on reddit where these people can be filtered out but unfortunately no *sigh*

So far the AP brand is basically, an "angel bean who has a slight quirk and awkwardness", he's never very #relatable, that's Dan's brand. However, people who likes Phil are most likely to be enjoying his personality, and those who enjoys his angel bean image, would enjoy his angel bean dad image just as much. Being a dad wouldn't make him less PG as long as he keeps his quirkiness and angel beaness, he's already have a family friendly image, so why not go all the way.

So far their massive cult teen following are more likely coming from Dan's side and their "phan" shipping side. But if you look closely Phil's channel is actually quite ageless, people from 6 to 60 can enjoy him. He just happen to have a teen following that's all, now youtube viewers have aged up, the biggest user group are actually 25-34.

So as long as Phil is still part of the "phan", his teen demo aren't going anywhere, and he can attract older viewers, so why not?

I disagree. Dan's main demographic is 13-18 girls. You know what teen girls love? Babies. You know what they love almost as much? Their idol talking about his cute kids. I think people would like it if he told short little stories about something cute his kid did, or some family fun day they went on.

Totally off topic but if anybody used to watch The OC back in the day, I listened to the first episode of the podcast Bryony just started and it was hilarious. She's watching it for the first time with two other guys who have seen it before and I laughed out loud so much at hearing them talk about how ridiculous it is/was (but enjoyably so). It's called We Used to be Teens and I recommend it (was going to put this in the podcast thread but saw it was pretty dead lol). Anyway shout out to Seth Cohen, the non threatening stalker nerd of my high school dreams.

They love babies maybe for 3 month, they will move on to more #relatable things as long as they get over they initial excitement. akui, really not sure I follow your logic there. There are literally a million things he could do that don't include becoming a parent and could be relevant to his fame and popularity. I honestly could never see Phil including his parental status in his career, whatsoever. Never.

I want to know what million things are cuz all i can think of is being a dad. Please tell.

Anyway, what i mean by being a dad is not putting his kids in every thumbnail of the video, i'm more talking about a status here, the dad status. He can talk about his kids' funny story from time to time without showing his kids to the camera. That's what i think. Phil wouldn't use his kid as clickbait.

He can talk about all these stuff first and tell plenty of stories. I would love to see him talking about his relationship status and his career. many people will find it interesting. And a couple of years after that we can only dream of the dad status.

i saw other youtubers showing black water in their videos just yesterday. i didnt know it was a thing before that. Maybe they all just decided to try it now or someone send it to them. And phil was trying that weird water in his liveshow too. i think he just bought every expensive type of water he saw in the store and thats all.
