If this post was an article & I had the time to perfect it rather than just vomiting out random thoughts before I have to head off again, it'd be called something like 'College Kids Ruined Obscure Art For Me'.

See, just a few years ago, I'd have been at the centre of 'missing weird, creative Phil years'. And I think it's fine and fair to think of them as the height of his YT days. But it's not where I'm at, and I wanna expand on why:

1) I consume a lot of media and a lot of "art". It's just a part of the crowd I fell in with, and there's nothing inherently ennobling about it, that's just a piece of my reality. I've been dragged to plays where a guy just stared at a chair for 2 hours, I've been to galleries showing paintings solely painted with people's genitals, I've politely declined an art show ticket where the artist would drink some mixture of paint and milk in real time & proceed to vomit it onto a canvas. There was a particularly memorable poetry slam I once attended where a goth-looking chick read a poem consisting only of the word "skin" for ten minutes.

The commentary I usually see for these things isn't necessarily based on enjoyment, or even the joy of a beautiful message hidden in the penis-shaped imprints. It's more along the lines of "I've certainly never seen something like that before."

And at 20, a hella lot of people are charmed by this. By the new, the inventive, the unseen. Shock for the sake of shock is a tool like any other, and sometimes, chaotic notes or words or strokes on a canvas are the only way people have to express the chaos they feel inside of them.

Now, that's not to say the weirdness in Phil's YouTube videos ever made it to paint vomiting. But yes, he used to be weird. He used to be the kind of creative that screamed of innovation, of trying, experimenting and looking for ways to put the essence of his brain into bite-sized videos on the a platform that way back then was largely about connecting to people like you.

Experimenting, often, is just another word for searching. And when he started out, I do think he was searching. Searching for people, for love, for meaning, for himself, as many twenty year olds are. Ten years ago, he was this whole person filled with possibility, unanswered questions and untamed potential, and YouTube was this platform filled with possibility, unanswered questions and untamed potential.

In ten years, a lot has changed, for both Phil and YouTube. YouTube became a business, an international cultural tool, a personality-driven sensation and a uniquie project that pioneers the idea that individual creators and big corporations can share revenue and everyone benefits.

And Phil? Phil is ten years older, too. Phil found a new home, a world of success, a life partner to share those with - and has the scars to prove it, too. He's had to deal with a lot more grief than most young people already while navigating people online paying attention to him, he's had his heart exposed for thousands of people to see, he's had people trying to use him and his name for his audience. He's ten years older. And while you're never done searching as a person, I do think he has a lot more answers now than he had at twenty.

So he's different. He's settled into himself, found his groove, found a way to navigate fame, found a way to keep his privacy and - he's still learning, but a lot of what's been established throughout these ten years of learning to do this isn't just going to evaporate. I don't think he needs to express the chaos within himself the way he did at twenty anymore simply because he's not that person anymore. You do take that person with you though, and sometimes, he'll say something like “I don't trust worms because you don't know if you're talking to their butt or their face" - and you can see that his brain is still a lovely, creatively thinking place, and just because he's not searching for his groove anymore, that doesn't mean he's just going through the motions.

And look, yeah. I've been frustrated with him, and I've thought that what he was delivering was slightly stale before. But the new video? Fills me with a lot of joy, and not just because it's along the lines of the traditional "ten minutes of happiness" that Phil wants to give us with his videos, and I love him for that.

My criticism has always been range. From sharing only one of your favourite animals cause that's the branding you ended up with to rigid portrayals of your straightness, to 3 personality aspects.

But that video challenges a lot of that, while subtly. Like that liking lions is "tradition", which both pays a tribute and acknowledges there's more to him, like challenging fan-percived personality traits, like not going for the obvious on-brand answers an giving thoughts on them.

That, to me, was a breath of fresh air, and a promise of more to come, and that comfort and feeling of just being ready is something that I've been getting from him for a while now in general. And I love love love it.

And because someone mentioned that it's been 5 years since the VDV leaked - isn't it beautiful to see Phil want to do a video that'll also „Hopefully make some of the quizzes' creators happy, too“ & interact with the idea (and word) of "phan" in a main channel video without any leftover anger & resentment?

Yes! I was thinking about this yesterday. He would have never ever done the things he does now even 1 year ago, and the fact that's he's here after a roller coaster filled 5 years is amazing.

I'm watching the liveshow currently, and he talked about predicting the ear tints.

Mmmmm. That was ok, still nice to 'catch up' but not quite as entertaining as last week. I felt like he just didn't have anything to say but I suppose some weeks will just be like that.

Liked that we got a brief mention of Dan's vid (that he loved it cute) and yes as expected, took full credit for saving Dan's vision lol. Good boyfriending Phil, top marks.

Did anyone catch, during the naming of the shrimp, when he was suggesting Gregory and then said 'Greg' and clearly realised he was about to name his pet after onion and immediately put that previous front-runner to bed

I really loved how he said that he thinks Albert the shrimp is a boy, but he doesn't know what he identifies as. It's not something many people would say. He'll be a great parent. Unless he neglects his kids like his houseplants

I liked the liveshow. Not as much as last week, but he seemed genuinely happy to be there, which is something!

Just a stupid thought on the 'Sir Lesterlot' thing....imagine what Dan's name would become...'Sir Howellalot' (which sounds about right tbh)

The bold bit is the what I always thought. And said much better than what I could do.

Whenever I look at his early stuff, I enjoy the creativity and the quirkiness, but I always think they are kind of cringey. Cringey because it always seemed like he was trying so hard for something. They remind me of when I was in college and watching film student videos. He was is so "sexual" in them compared to now, it was like he was trying to get laid via yt vids.

I am glad he has changed to "safe" things. Even though he now does safe things, he always is able to put a creative/quirky Phil spin on it. He always says he wants his videos to make people happy and he is almost always able to do that for me. I don't have to think during them, and just have a few minutes in the day where I can relax and watch something pleasant that puts a smile on my face. There is nothing wrong with that at all. That being said, I wouldn't mind some more creative vids from him. I hope he does go back to his roots in that sense, even if it is just making up a new tag or something like that. But if he doesn't it's all good, and I will most likely stick with watching him until he (if ever) gives up YouTube altogether.

I enjoyed it. Favorite part was talking about the DINOF vid. I wish they would put up some bloopers. But I wont get my hopes up. I will have to watch it again as I was doing about 8 different things while I was "watching" it. I'm excited for the calendar too. I have this years, and it is the only merch I have bought (from anything ever). I really like it. I'm excited for something disturbing. What could that be?

Overall uneventful liveshow today, I was frustrated by how many times he answered the same questions and mentioned the same things, such as AHS, the hatched shrimp, his voice being deep, iOS 10...I'm sure the list goes on. Here's my thoughts as in-order as i can remember:

his tweet about touching his hair a lot made me wonder if the merging of deppy is seriously nearing completion...or perhaps Dan shed his hair obsessiveness and gave it to Phil

Everyone kept saying his voice was deeper but I feel like it sounded exactly the same?

They've been mentioning Boston a lot lately and it warms my heart and also makes me wonder if they're coming over here to eat that pizza again......probably not and even if they did I probably wouldn't see them but hearing them talk about where I live is fun! Btw if anyone has sleuthed and figured out what that pizza place is called please DM me because I asked my friend who works right near the Wang theater and even she didn't know? I want to try it...

We were right about the game they were playing!! Props to Artdefines06 who I believe is the one who originally guessed and explained it It certainly sounded like fun, now I want to play this game with friends, hahaha! Dan and Phil need to make an ultimate guide to having a fun night in. I'd follow the steps.

Phil complained about 6 pound plant food.....................and Dan's over here spending thousands on articles of clothing, and how are these two compatible again?

The calendar is one of the only things he talked about that actually matters or is interesting. I'm curious about the theme. He said April will be disturbing......???

Speaking of themes, I'm happy he explained the AHS theme because I was curious about it but didn't really care enough to google it, thanks Phil for keeping me lazy and feeding my curiosity for me

Phil's sort-of side of the Dan story was another interesting thing he talked about, I particularly liked hearing him compliment the video Dan made and talking about how he made it well and clarifying that everything in the video was true. That was all around nice to hear. Glad that Phil stuck to the story of him putting in the eyedrops for Dan because I feel like by now they would've figured out that normal people put in their own eyedrops lol, at least they didn't try to backtrack like "uhhh actually Dan was putting them in himself no homo"

Overall a 3/10 liveshow, if anyone's wondering if they should watch it I'd recommend skipping this one if you don't have much time

Overall the ls was alright. I enjoyed the bit where he talked about loving Dan's video and recounting what the stressful experience was like for him lol.

They live with eachother, So I don't think they'd constantly text eachother when they are in the same house...

But, I don't think it was Dan though. Only because if it was him, he would've showed his name. It might've been just a real life friend or something that has their full name as the contact. And I do agree it's not a heart emoji, it looks more rounded than triangled at the bottom. And an angry face (as suggest by Waggled9007) would actually make sense with the context of the message "it came" right below it.

That was a lovely liveshow. I like just hearing his thoughts on all the things and it's cosy the way he keeps the conversation going with the chat and top fans. I wondered that about not naming the shrimp Gregory too, but it seemed he liked Albert the most anyway. Calendar photos already, the months have flown by. I can't think of anything other than April Fools for April so unless they've posed creepily like with the faces they make in their craft videos, I have no idea, and that's a stretch already. His voice was more consistently deeper than usual as people kept telling him, be interesting to see if it stays that way. Can't believe he put his hair irons on his neck for the heat, a microwaved towel can't be that hard to think of, silly boy.

I meant like how did he take it, regardless of device used (which was clearly Phil's phone as we can see his phone in the pic) because we can see both his hands

As updatedphan states, clearly he's sprouted a new hand. Phil's fic 'The Hand' has come true but his psychic powers failed his slightly this time as its Dan with the new limb not Phil. Come on Phil, we expect better than this.

Seriously though how did Phil position himself to take that as it looks like its right from Dan's perspective. The trash in me likes to imagine he was stood behind Dan with his arms wrapped around to the front of Dan's chest
