Dan & Phil part 27: Let's Go Home
I think it's fairly equal, tbh... (From what I remember off the top off my head, Dan smushes a christmas cookie into Phil's mouth, and gets force-fed an easter nest?) but "Captain Lester" has probably tipped the scale somewhat...

I think it’s such a cute habit of Phil’s and in some instances (definitely not always, but sometimes) it seems to function as a kind of kiss-by-proxy… like he has the object kiss Dan’s face instead of doing it himself (in some cases quite overtly, like with the skull lol).
Some random observations:
- It’s kind of interesting to me how often Phil does it compared to Dan. Even in the examples I could think of where Dan does do it, it's often kind of different in one way or another from how Phil does it.
- Dan’s most frequent response is to say “Thank you.”
- Once again we have examples of Phil being kind of rough with Dan, basically attacking his face with all manner of different objects, and Dan obviously trusting him enough that he doesn’t even blink half the time.
Speaking of the kiss-by-proxy thing, I also threw together this small compilation of them ordering each other to kiss/blow into/hug/touch various objects. I’m sure there are other similar instances; these are just the ones I could think of off the top of my head. (I also feel like there are some interesting conclusions that could be drawn about their power dynamic from these examples, but I'm not sure what it would be lol.)
I thought that an additional example would be 5:50 of the Festive ditl

Thank you once again to our true overlord, oqua
I love how Dan always goes from unamused/really Phil to giggly and smiley in about two seconds. He can't deny Phil

I was thinking that's what the Phil trash sounding reply about musical theatre was for, as everything went on Dan's channels he just needed to publicly big up Phil. It made sense for everything to go on Dan's though as it is for charity so more subscribers can see it.IckleMissMayhem wrote:I think it's fairly equal, tbh... I thought it went to Dan's channel because it has more subscribers. It's not one of the collaborative projects to promote each other's channels, so they just went with the one that would guarantee more views.
This said, I wouldn't mind if something was uploaded to AP to accompany it.

Oqua your dedication to compilations is appreciated.
I went off on one yesterday and did a whole musical analysis of their song and BiShoe said I should put my thoughts here so they're under the spoiler! I study music and have been training in various styles of singing for 12 years, so them releasing a song gave me an indescribable amount of joy. Honestly, I was having the time of my life; musical analysis and deppy at the same time makes my nerdy heart soar.

Thank you for all of that dezzawintz, it's really interesting to hear from someone who knows and can hear these things. If I could hear Phil going a little flat, I assumed it was just the tone changing. I remember finding that liveshow clip of them singing the Phantom of the Opera song and as a musical theatre fan, I was so happy especially that they can both naturally sing pretty well and with different ranges to duet like that. Phil's deep voice has the same effect as hi my wearing black, shivers and melting.

I actually love Phil's voice, when he sings baritone, partly because it's nice and partly because it's so surprising. I remember Carrie's face in the teaching to sing video when she heard it.
They sort of talk-sang a lot? I did notice Phil clipping off the ends, and the emphasis on enunciating (articulating
I've had the song stuck in my head for this entire day.
Also I love Dan's tone of voice when he says "freaky" it's funny.
I miss Dan Howell's stupid face.

I love love love love this analysis!! I've been studying singing for 9 years and this makes me very very happy.dezzawintz wrote:Oqua your dedication to compilations is appreciated.

Honestly, I spent too long trying to study their performance. At first I found Phil's solo at the beginning a bit cringy but after realizing what short time they had to learn to sing I started to appreciate the song without overthinking it too much hahah. Thank you for this gem.

flarequake, right??? They really can sing quite well naturally, and it excites me that they've had a bit of training. What I wouldn't give to give them a singing lesson haha.
opendoor, you've just made me realise that I'm kind of but not really a specialist in something and it's never occurred to me before, that's so cool omg. I'm so jealous of Carrie in that video, I WANT TO TEACH PHIL TO SING. He definitely would have fared better at a lower pitch but Jimmy Jewel is mega legit so I'm sure that there was a solid reason, I just wish I knew what it was beyond guessing
You're right about their talk singing as well, that's also mega musical theatre. It happens all over the place in Rent. And YES I also love Dan's tone on freaky! That was a solid bit of characterisation
realiity *singing nerd high five*!! What's your focus? Also you are SPEAKING my LANGUAGE; when I first watched the show I was so nervous for the musical number because I was like oh god, I'm can't be impartial, I know TOO MUCH what if I can't bear it, but they pulled it off and it's only made me love them more.

I love you because as a person who spend most of her life stanning Westlife, I definitely knows what you're talking aboutdezzawintz wrote:The song starts in a different key to the majority of it, because Phil's voice is lower than Dan's and it's his solo. (For anyone who cares, it starts in G major, Phil's solo finishes on V/the dominant, "sing it with a friend" (0:36), and then there's a small jazzy section on the dominant before they move up a semitone into Eb major; a move that I will ALWAYS associate with Westlife when they get up of their stools and the key changes. Anyone know what I'm talking about?)
Totally agree. It is so interesting considering their voice range but it turns out great?! Maybe when Dan said in the docu that Jimmy is a music genius, he means it literally.dezzawintz wrote:I thought that having Dan sing the lower part and Phil sing the higher part at the end was an interesting choice and a stroke of genius tbh (now a Jimmy Jewell stan), because Dan's voice is higher than Phil's, but I suspect that Phil would be nervous about the harmony/more confident singing the tune.
Yesssdezzawintz wrote:I find Phil's sliding issue interesting because his solution is to almost bite the sound away and shorten it, if that makes sense? It's noticeable at points but he did a great job of not going to either extreme the majority of the time.
Excuse me if I sound too trashy but I want to bath in Phil's voicedezzawintz wrote:I want Phil to be a bass in a choir, because his bass section is delicious

swofro I'm so glad you know what I mean! I was like this is such a bizarre reference, no one's gonna know what I'm on about. It's like; stand, key change, walk around the stools, come to the front of the stage lol. It's burned into my brain from the amount of times I saw it as a kid
I think they definitely felt very comfortable with Jimmy. I did some research and he has an impressive list of things under his belt; he's goals tbh. I remember them saying in the documentary that they were terrified to have the rehearsal where they needed to work out what key the song should be in and I love that they found someone who made them feel comfortable and knew how to work with their voices.
And you don't sound trashy! Phil's bass range really is something special and I just wanna get that boy to support the sound because he'd get work, no doubt.
majitzu, I'm glad at some of it made sense! If you have any questions I'd be happy to answer them, either here or in a PM but obviously you don't have to ask me questions
you're definitely right, they both have a natural inclination towards singing

Dezzawintz That was awesome! thank you. I don't understand most of it, but it was really cool to read
While we are on the subject here are some parts I would love to see them play
Dan would make a great Elder Price from Book of Mormon - Comedy is his strong point.
I would also love to see Dan as Juror 1 in the stright play 12 angry men. But that's just because watching him argue for a good cause is one of my favorite things lol. Start this one at 11:18, Dan would be the one guy who pleas not guilty and has to spend the rest of the play convincing 11 other guys to agree with him.
For Phil I feel kinda guilty asking for this, because I think he enjoyed being on stage with dan more than he enjoyed being on stage, but I want him to play Don Quixote in Man of La Mancha. A man who read so many fantasy novels he ended up believing he was a knight himself and goes around rescuing damsels and slaying ogres (none of which are real). He has the perfect combination of passion and innocence to play this role perfectly straightfaced and make it believable.
