Hey, I liked the LA book tour show video, especially the part when Dan flips off the audience from behind the rear projection screen after being shamed over the "Hi, my name is Dan" bit. It's worth an hour for hardcore fans. Also brings context to #audiogate.

I watched it from 40 mins to the end, starting with Danger men at work. The best bits were spoiled online anyway. I do appreciate the cameraman deciding to zoom in on phil tying his shoe. NO wonder they come untied he doesn't double knot them! Cute stuff, I enjoy dan's mortified sniffing face. You can real tell the difference between jokey fake embarrassed and actual "what is my life" embarrased.

Watched DAPGOOSE LA and enjoyed it.

I think this is both them relaxing and behaving more naturally because relaxing is more comfortable, and behaving more naturally because while they have been aware for a long time that their natural behaviour appears coupley to a lot of people, that's no longer something they're trying to avoid. I would actually go a step further and say that appearing coupley might be something they're consciously choosing to do. Obviously everyone is free to think their own thoughts and come to their own conclusions, but here is my interpretation of what I'm seeing now, based on what I've seen of everything they've said and done publicly for the last 7 years:
The future they want is a future in which everyone knows they are in a relationship, because they have a home together, they have children together, and if marriage is more than a piece of paper when it's a happy one, they're married to each other, and they're happy. But they want to get there without any single announcement, event, or revelation which is big enough to attract the attention of crowds of people who had not previously paid them much attention. That's what I think they're trying to achieve, and they've got a fair way towards it already. Already there are people finding them for the first time, new to the phandom, whose first assumption is that they are watching a couple, who are puzzled and surprised to discover that "they're not confirmed".
What do I mean by "announcement, event, or revelation which is big enough to attract the attention of crowds of people who had not previously paid them much attention"? I had never heard of Ingird Nelson before she came out. I was only vaguely aware of Joey Graceffa, I'd never watched any of his videos, and yet I watched his coming out ones. In August 2013 Troye Sivan came out, and gained more subscriptions in a single month than he has before or since. source. Connor Franta also has a similar spike in his stats. I can't prove this, but I get the impression that neither Dan nor Phil would want the huge spike in attention that would come from a sudden sexuality or relationship reveal. I don't think either of them would want to be watched or subscribed to purely because they're openly lgbt+ or in a relationship.

Hi! I have a question for all of you who think dan and phil are trying to open up and make clear (in the long run) that they are in a relationship without any kind of announcement (like BisexualShoeMarriage, great post btw!).
How do you fit (yeah I'm gonna say it) busgate in this whole puzzle? Haruing the bed situation would have made more sense if that was the case, imo. (I mean, I do think they are together, but I'm getting mixed signals).

BisexualShoeMarriage, I absolutely agree that if they're together they would never officially announce it through a video or some other medium like a book/music video/etc, but their situation is a bit difficult since they are not just two random youtubers (like connor and troye for example), or a youtuber/non-youtuber, who can just keep each other out of their work or social media, they pretty much fused their content together and branded it as "two quirky bffs with no life", so what we're seeing now is a lot of "best friends", "our friendship" etc mentions which, if they are together, can't really be their theme for the next 20 years, can it? if they are together, even if they consider each other best friends too, and if they're still on youtube, calling each other just that would at some point seem ridiculous to the audience, and the audience can be demanding.

HOWEVER, I do think they're just making videos for people who like them for them, and making videos that make themselves happy. If they were making videos for their shippers then we would have a lot more baiting.

Debated not/posting this because it's kind of irrelevant, but I'm feeling slow, a little stupid, and too tired, and it's bugging me: at the 50:58 question, when Phil said he was trying to go up the descending escalator, did seem it to anyone else like he meant (and how they described it) that he almost went down the ascending escalator?

As somebody who hates busgate and had a little negativity meltdown right after they tweeted those stupid tweets, I'll try to answer. BisexualShoeMarriage, that was a fantastic and thoughtful post that I mostly agree with except for the 'they want people to know' part. I don't think they're making a conscious effort to be coupley and encourage people to perceive them that way. I do agree they just don't mind anymore if people do. No more defensiveness, no more relying on heteronormativity to fill in the blanks in their own words to keep people off the right track (if that makes sense). I really don't think they'll ever willingly admit they're together, or fill us in on their relationship history, but they've reached a point where protecting it at all costs (to the point of lying and being overly defensive etc) just doesn't appeal to them anymore. So busgate. Ugh. I've just chalked it up to them knowing their audience. They remembered Japan and bedgate (can I retroactively call it that? cuz I'm gonna) and wanted to avoid the overenthusiastic Sherlocking (lol great well thought out plan there, clearly...). The YTRed stuff was for their audience, yes, but as it's also something YT was bankrolling and promoting (springing for billboards even), it was meant to attract more than just their core audience. And rather than leave the bed situation haru'd (encouraging the stalker fans to probe and draw all of the attention to it, in turn drawing non-hardcore fans' attention to it as well), they decided to make it clear they were in separate beds. No ambiguity to fuel the kind of attention they've always wanted to avoid (the sexuality-based-only attention by people who know nothing about them, wonderfully explained by BisexualShoeMarriage), they hardcore went the other way to nip it in the bud. But fans are awful people and turned it into probably an even bigger deal anyway. Non-fans/casual watchers probably steered clear of it though, which I think was the main intent.

To that I say: did they though? They called the bus tour 'funny' and mentioned how uncomfortable the bunks were. Big whoop. Their sleeping situation, hardcore fan or not, is still nobody's business but theirs. They aren't going to offer up more information than necessary when privacy is still important to them. Privacy, not being angrily closeted. Big damn difference.

BisexualShoeMarriage, your post gave me a new perspective I hadn't considered. A real life "slow-burn", because I had always figured that if/when the time came, one event - be it planned or not - would out their relationship. To us, anyway. That is to say that the Phandom would take a dog or a house as conclusive evidence they are 100% together and it would spread like wildfire. But I'm realizing that the small changes (for example Dan addressing his sexuality in his roast) are not something that goes viral very far outside of the general fan populous. The same is likely to happen with moving or other things. We'll all get excited, but it won't cause a dramatic increase in views or a significant confirmation to anyone who doesn't particularly care. I like it. I like it a lot. Thank you for the post!
Someone pointed out at the time of #busgate that the way in which Dan and Phil addressed their sleeping situation was made to be such an over-the-top joke, that we can only assume all of it was bullshit. Nobody's waiting to film a rock-paper-scissors with obnoxious, colorful graphics to decide where they'll sleep. It's a discussion that's had privately (if it's had at all). We can assume, then, that if that's a joke, so is the fact that Dan has been sleeping in a bunk for 3 months. Unlikely. They know it. We know it. And they don't risk a whole to-do by revealing that they share a bed.
But who knows, maybe we're all just convincing ourselves for sanity.
ETA: In light of the return of #busgate discussion, I find it kind of interesting that nobody ever notes that in a much more intimate and personal clip with the two of them - in the very same movie - Dan is clearly lying next to Phil in the bed and filming him asleep.
This may be contradictory to what I said above, but a bus tour was pretty much required in this sort of doc. In turn, it would make sense to show where they sleep, so there's no haru-ing that. Hola! I don't think YT red has subtitles but I hope I'm wrong (I didn't buy the film). In case I'm right, you could try and ease your friends first by wathcing a few deppy videos (so that they get used to the accents, then it will be much easier for them). It's possible that it's due to it being a youtube red project, something new for them, potentially different audience and expectations leading to more caution (while at the same time making it clear to their invested fanbase that it's a joke). People have mentioned the YTR movies feel different than their regular content and I agree - it's more american? I dont know how else to describe it.
Also the doc was clearly a part of the whole tatinof universe, which played up the whole best bros stick. And all the open- and casualness lately began right after the tour and all it's gimmicks ended (with the eu leg being a belated thing).
Kinda related: the mention of storage again in DAPGOOSE LA makes me buy even more into the theory that they will move in the near future, which in turn makes normalizing of their relationship now even more plausible.

There are advantages and disadvantages to every choice. People wanted a tour bus tour. They gave us a tour bus tour. It would have been pretty odd to go through the whole documentary without any footage of the tour bus. If they had shown footage of the tour bus and not done a tour of said bus, people would have been disappointed. If they had done a bus tour and completely ignored the fact that they had to sleep on said bus, it would have looked pretty odd. I think the key phrase in that question is “in the long run”. They want to get to a place in which everyone knows eventually. They have to go at a pace they’re comfortable with. They have every reason to not rush this. They chose, for the sake of a youtube red documentary, to put the question to bed (lol unintended pun) and say they slept separately. But notice the tone. It’s a joke. That whole section is a huge joke to them, and I think they were hoping we’d laugh along. This isn’t going to hold them back from implying bed sharing later if they want to.
