OKAY well basically I asked if people who were good at photoshop would be able to tell whether the comment is real or not, even though I think it's reasonable to believe it's real.
Ngl if this is photoshop, this is a good job. I can't rule it out just by looking at it though. The metadata don't seem to show that it has been edited either but you can meddle with those if you're careful enough. I don't who would have bothered at the time though?
However, since this screenshot had been around for a long time, I also tried looking into Photoshop's popularity, but it wasn't conclusive, Photoshop started to be a thing from 2003 and I'm
not sure but I think you could add metadata even at the time. If someone has the original source of this screenshot though, it might help
Hence the two hypothesis (the comments are fake or real) have equally plausibility, in term of Photoshop rough expertise anyway. But if it's fake, well, the editor looks like he wanted to be believed awfully much.
(I'm voicing my opinion since my degree revolves around media and internet content and distribution even if image analysis isn't my major. If someone has a more advanced knowledge of Photoshop, I would be glad to hear what they think because I'm really trying not to be biased but it is hard)
tl;dr We can't really conclude if this screenshot has been edited or not.

THEN I said like many other people their reaction makes me think/hope it was real. If I made that video as a prank with my best friend my main concern would be not looking homophobic, I know Internet culture was kind of different, but not different enough to excuse that shit. I feel like if it was a prank the tone would've been WAY more apologetic and WAYYYY less defensive. If they really were just two bros pranking their audience and that's how they responded then they owe all of us a formal fucking apology. I'm usually not one to say stuff like that but it's true. If they really were/are dating than I totally get it and don't think they need to apologize for trying to stay in the closet for privacy, but if they were "telling the truth" the way they handled it was messed up.
Agreed, Dan's attitude wasn't the best to say it mildly, not to mention really suspicious. I think that with time, Dan learnt that being shady is not solving anything. But there were the early days of their popularity and if they didn't expect it, it might have felt quite intrusive - particularly considering how deep they seemed to be in the closet.
