I was in two minds about him, because i thought he was a good guy deep down just being an idiot on camera.
But his unapologetic attitude towards this whole situation made me realize he really is an asshole, a smug one too.
And he's lying through his teeth in that video about not wanting controversy.
Gotcha. Yeah I don't really see how he can jokingly put onion's face over his own as if he's any better at this point. Onion likes to defend the comedy stylings of black face and really it's any day now before Felix does it in a video for lols. I don't know why rich white men feel so strongly about needing to be able to say the n word, as if asking them not to is taking anything away from them. Or why people in lower positions than them (those positions getting lower and lower politically by the day, yeah Felix it is 2017 and a fucking KKK endorsed 'non-PC' is about to take over the White House and your chosen country isn't doing much better. so.. congrats, let's... celebrate...?). Yes let's all laugh in the face of racism and homophobia and sexism because the rich guy who isn't affected will be just fine one way or another. No real world consequences on his life, so what's the big deal.malday wrote: I was in two minds about him, because i thought he was a good guy deep down just being an idiot on camera.

This is such a petty ass thing to bring up, but I don't care. Months ago, maybe in the summer since I was still in my other apt, I was home sick and got a notif that he was livestreaming slither.io, so I had it on while I was making soup or something. And at some point in the stream, he called somebody an 'anime f*g' (based on their username I guess) after it ate his snake. And his face immediately went 'oh shit' and he said 'whoops' and kind of laughed it off while continuing to glance at the chat and look genuinely embarrassed/worried. He may have apologised, I don't remember, but it was still when he pushing the line of 'I've changed from my former self who used a bunch of homophobic slurs and rape jokes I'm not like that now etc ' so I kind of uneasily shrugged it off. But that embarrassment really bugs me now, because it was just a moment where his 'false positivity' faltered, and he let his real self out. And people saw it.
And now he just wants to be allowed to be disgusting without feeling the need for embarrassment over it, he doesn't want other people's reactions to be his problem, and that's really disappointing in a lot of ways. "It's 2017" isn't an explanation for fuck all, if anything it's just that much more disappointing that this push back against progress is being shielded as 'real talk' or honesty as if giving a shit about hurting others is a weakness. What does it take away from anybody to do the absolute bare minimum to show respect to people, I really want to know. He gets internet backlash from countless people of countless backgrounds and decides to shrug all that away to listen to one person claiming to be in a position to give him a pass for it, because they laughed or because they weren't offended. And anybody who was is wrong/oversensitive/doesn't 'understand' the humour.
I really do side-eye PJ most of all. D&P barely see Felix in person, but PJ lives near him and works with him and hangs out with him. Like if that's what slips out during a livestream, what does he say when he's not on guard with a live audience watching? Is it something he wouldn't say unselfconsciously, and PJ wouldn't laugh at unselfconsciously, if they were in a room with (for the sake of argument) D&P? I'm just tired of this shit, honestly. And there's nothing to be done.

The story about the livestream that you told definitely confirms that he's aware of the shit he does and that it's wrong, he simply doesn't care and/or would rather be the hero of some anti-PC reddit edgelord than a decent human being.
And Grace retweeting a video of his that she agrees with because the subject affects her or whatever but not calling him out for on his shit, is the prime example of the YouTube community being useless.

When I saw "context matter" I was like
I don't think I want to watch it, I don't know how can you be claiming context matter with this. Like can someone tell me how did he tried to turn this one around? Or did he said it's 2017 and I don't want controversy is the context?

Okay wow. The "context matters" video does not paint Felix in a good light at all. My biggest complaint with both the "n" word controversy and the "death" comment was that he edits these videos after he says these terrible things so he has the chance to think about how things sound but Felix talked to that point and said he did see these things and just thought they were worth the lols.
Also, with Felix's response to all of this - (paraphrasing but not by much) it's 2017 and I'm not going to let the ph police control me. This is my sense of humor so deal with it.
I'm glad he has such a developed sense of humor that he finds the oppression of minorities hilarious. I'd agree with his stance that being too pc is a bad thing if he didn't equate the opposite of that with actively laughing at horrible things. I always thought I had a pretty good sense of humor but until I'm ready to laugh at the death of thousands of people I guess I'm just not there yet.

The "context matters" thing is basically saying that the news reports on these things for clickbait, but it doesn't matter because he thinks it's funny and he won't shut up because people want him to.
I used to think Felix might actually be a good person with a misguided online persona, but I think it's clear that he's determined to be offensive. He knows what he's doing will cause controversy, and he basks in it. I thought that perhaps he just wanted attention, which isn't great, but it's not a crime; this video indicates that he really does believe the offensive rubbish he's saying. It's sad.

He has no arguments in this video apart from "news headlines are clickbait and want to drag me down boohoo poor me" and "making rascist/homophobic/antisemitic jokes is different than actually being rascist/homophobic/antisemitic"
Both of which are just nonsense. Just take the first headline he quotes in the video: "PDP in antisemitic storm after paying men to unveil sign that says death to all jews"
That... is literally what happened???? There is no exagguration here, he decided to do exactly that thing, film it, edit it and put in on the internet. And now he's whining because people call him out for it?
Of course media will jump on anything they think will get them clicks. But this isn't a campaign to come for your rich, white ass. If you don't give them a reason for ripping you apart, they will talk about something else.
And honestly, this painting himself as the victim (of the media) is the same strategy that assholes like Trump and right-wing leaders use all the time to excuse their shitty behaviour and get sympathy.
And the second one... there are countless articles, books and studies about how jokes and ridiculing groups of people are a part of hate-culture, and one of the most effective parts. And how repeating these things, even as jokes, makes those ideas real in people's heads and leads actual neonazis, rapists and the like to feel validated in their behaviour.
So what about getting yourself an actual sense of humor instead of relying on being offensive which is in reality harmful to people? Unlike this "shitstorm" is for you, since it gives you even more views and exposure...
Should have unsubscribed to him long ago. If somebody talks about "PC-culture" like it's the reason for society's downfall, that is normally a sign to get out of there, and fast.

~ IT'S A HORSE SUSAN ~
The real kicker is how he seems to think people are criticising him because he's white. Not because he demands a right to use hate speech, won't realise how privileged he is or doesn't seem to care a fig about marginalised people. No, it's all because he's white, right? This kind of rethoric is such a red flag for me. I have zero tolerance for white straight rich men whining about being oppressed for being white, straight and rich whenever they get called out for their oppressive behaviour. And Grace agreeing with the video just goes to show that she isn't much better. Where was she when Felix could have used some criticism earlier? Why does she only weigh in now to agree with him, pretending like there was nothing wrong with what he did at all? I used to like her a lot but that's not okay.
I love your posts, mio. I agree with all of it. As I said earlier, there are already neo-nazis commenting on his video and sharing it because they feel validated by it and they think Felix is one of them. Seems to be okay with Felix or he would speak out against it.

OT but I got a notification on my iPad suggesting I watch PewDiePie's latest video, even though I'm not subscribed to him (it said I might find it interesting or along the lines).
Is that a thing, notifications for recommended videos? Did Felix BUY YOUTUBE?
Haha as much I wish the conspiracy was true I get notifications for recommendations sometimes, even if I'm not subscribed.papierklemmen wrote:OT but I got a notification on my iPad suggesting I watch PewDiePie's latest video, even though I'm not subscribed to him (it said I might find it interesting or along the lines). Is that a thing, notifications for recommended videos? well, that's a pointless feature... i didn't get notifications for half of the gamingmas videos, but for some reason got pewdiepie's. thanks, obama youtube.Veritine wrote:Haha as much I wish the conspiracy was true I get notifications for recommendations sometimes, even if I'm not subscribed.papierklemmen wrote:OT but I got a notification on my iPad suggesting I watch PewDiePie's latest video, even though I'm not subscribed to him (it said I might find it interesting or along the lines). Is that a thing, notifications for recommended videos? I am not defending Felix but I have a 4 year old nephew that constantly watches Ryan (so I have seen his videos many times) and while the family comes off nice, they clearly are not making videos because their son loves toys. In fact, several of their family members have channels for the toy reviews so while I don't agree with him 99.9% of the time, he didn't attack the child. What he did say was that the family was pushing the kid to do things he probably didn't want and he did talk about the views and how the videos were clearly sponsored by Walmart.malday wrote:I know Philip DeFranco is controversial, but he did an interview with the family of the toy review kid that pewdiepie trashed in one of his videos, and hearing this family out it makes Felix seem even more like a dick:
So even though Felix is trash, I don't really think he's wrong in this case. (Just my opinion)

The problem with Felix's video and his response is, as the comments that malday posted brought up, his hypocritical jerk attitude. He keeps reiterating in his videos how much he hates media and how they don't research, make false accusations, make clickbaity titles, blow everything out of proportion, take everything out of context and paint him as a villain as a result. He's made like 30945 videos on the topic, every single time he fucks up and the media covers it, he takes it to his youtube channel to call out the media outlets and whine (sometimes righteously so, I admit, but that's a thing of the past now).Amiaw wrote:So even though Felix is trash, I don't really think he's wrong in this case. (Just my opinion)
Yet, in his video about Ryan he literally did the very same things, targeting the family he doesn't know, and didn't care that he was coming in without any research or making accusations out of thin air, because HE wasn't a victim this time. It might be true that the parents are forcing the kid etc. but what he did was also accuse them of fake views and blatant sponsorship etc. Which was proven(?) untrue. In fact, people who have a kid/know families with kids wouldn't find anything bizzare about a toys review channel having so many views but no comments. My 4 year old niece can watch this kind of shit non stop and on repeat all day.
At the end of the day, what Felix really cares about is views views views. He doesn't give a shit whether these parents are exploiting their kid, he only made a video on it because he's perma pressed that YouTube is not catering to him and someone else is getting more views than him while he's losing his in some mystery algorithm crisis - despite the fact that their target audiences are completely different.
TLDR; honestly fuck off Felix. Lately, all he does is whine whine whine, whines about Youtube, whines about his viewers whining about him not playing games, then goes make shitty problematic jokes or shits on other youtubers, and then whines when he's called out.

~Long rant~
I've unsubscribed for good from Felix, after being on-off for a little bit. I already briefly vented in the main d+p thread, and basically my point is that he's self-centred, egotistical and unable to take any form of criticism.
Dating from about the time he made that series of games about 'saving' Donald Trump, (in which he, imo, seemed to be indirectly supporting him...I mean, there was no Hillary equivalent?) his sense of humour began to appeal less and less to me. His slightly older videos, like the Pokemon-hunting parodies, were pretty funny, and seemed to strike the right sense of humour. I remember how he mentioned (I can't remember the exact video) that his now-deleted 'My New Car!' video got him a lot of views (although, imo, probably just because of the KSI shade) and that he felt like he was finding 'his' sense of humour and he was glad the subscribers liked it...but I feel like Felix actually, as much as he seems determined not to admit it, caters exactly to what viewers want, and so he's taken this slightly 'edgier' video and changed his entire channel to focus around that kind of content. I mean, I don't even watch Filthy Frank (just no) but people already claim he's just copying his kind of videos. So, the irony lies in the fact that while ranting about 'forced positivity', Felix is actually doing 'forced negativity' as a means of getting subscribers and views?!
The 'deleting my channel at 50 million' idea actually made me quite happy?! Because it maybe showed him to have a bit of integrity: a way of saying 'I want real, dedicated fans watching my stuff' and 'I want to do my own thing instead of appealing to be edgy' BUT NO. That was the final straw in a way for me (or maybe the second-to-last, before all the racist stuff surfaced this month). He literally did the whole stunt for views and subscribers, and he didn't apologise or even consider really going ahead and deleting his channel to start over.
In a nutshell, I believe Felix is self-conscious and insecure, (I mean, when that media reporter called him 'insecure' - don't want to link the vid - look how defensive he got?! Something hit a nerve there) and overcompensates by acting like a giant dick. Basically he resembles every bully in high school, as somebody on this forum already, correctly, said: just trying to fit in, and not giving a shit if this hurts anyone else. And yes, he definitely reminds me of Trump, particularly the way he uses words (this video is related to that, if anyone's interested):
Annoyingly (and scarily) Felix is quite persuasive. But his 'context matters' stuff is absolute crap. If context matters so badly, put your comments in the context of the Holocaust, which you can do just as well as put a """edgy humour""" lens on it. But he's willingly uneducated/selfish concerning any social issues (unless they're 'forced' on him, like the Cringemas livestream donating to an AIDS charity). Felix cringes way too easily at things (even at things which aren't cringey; all of his 'cringe compilations' testify to this, particularly the handshake ones...like I don't understand how that's mind-meltingly cringey at all?) and this feeds into/supports what I believe is his own superiority complex.
I couldn't be more frustrated that this guy is in such a position of power, on a platform dominated by younger viewership, and using that position to make videos like he does. Calling out the media also indirectly serves to make him seem more like an edge-lord too. Like "look at me! how much attention I'm getting! i barely said anything!" when surely he must know that his comments will get attention. That's what he's looking for?
Lastly, his videos make me feel so uncomfortable. They just scream 'negative' to me. As of late, I was watching them in the evenings for 'entertainment' but I just ended up angry and distracted afterwards. And this is nothing to do with oversensitivity or not 'getting' his sense of humour: it's a genuine feeling of aversion, like through watching him you're watching (and supporting) some narcissistic a-hole just continue to be egotistical.
If only he had deleted his channel and started over, but no, he's not got the integrity.

(Sorry this post is all over the place; I'm quite angry
After seeing the negative reaction to deppy's last gaming video, I decided to "educate" myself as to what is really going on with pewds. I refused to watch any more of his videos, so my education has come from idb and twitter, for the most part. I am beyond disgusted. What bothers me most (and I realize this has been discussed) is that there are hoards of impressionable teenagers who really look up to Felix (my 15 year old nephew being one of them), whilst having the double whammy of coming of age during a Trump presidency. It has me beyond worried for the future. I literally feel sick that this kind of behavior can ever be considered okay. From a youtuber, from a president, from my next door neighbor; doesn't matter. It's not okay. It will never be okay.
Well maybe I'm not the best person in the world (actually i'm the worst) but Pewd's humour gets to me. I have this really dark sense of humour and I can laugh about almost anything. UNTIL IT'S NOT A JOKE AND IT'S PURE RACISM/HOMOPHOBIA/ETC. And Felix is obviously joking. Let's put it like that: my great grandfather was Jewish (i think so), and he died in Auschwitz. Did I laugh about "death to all jews" joke? Yes. Do I say "hitler did nothing wrong" as a joke? Yes. Would I kick someone's ass if they said it to me, but they would actually mean it? Yes. I'm into guys and I don't really look like a manly macho or something. Am I offended when my best friends call me a fag? No, because me and my friends say shit about each other in a loving way. Would I be offended if a random person on the street called me a fag? Yes, of course, because they mean it in a very non-loving way. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that paying some guys to dance and write antisemitic things is good and appropriate, but he didn't do it to actually hate on jews, he did it as a joke. Which I found funny, mainly because I was shocked they actually did it, but you don't have to laugh at it if you don't find it funny. But don't say it's racism, because it's not. It's a joke. Maybe not appropriate joke, but a joke. Dark humour, but he didn't actually mean it. Just like me saying "hitler did nothing wrong" doesn't mean I'm glad that my great grandfather died.

Here's the thing with dark humour: you have to be careful with it. You joking with your friends is a whole other level than PewDiePie making a video like that. When you joke with your friends, you know their morals, you know only they will hear it and you know nobody is going to be offended by it.CoolDoggo wrote:Well maybe I'm not the best person in the world (actually i'm the worst) but Pewd's humour gets to me. Just like me saying "hitler did nothing wrong" doesn't mean I'm glad that my great grandfather died.
i love you all don't hate procreate
Sorry if I cause some shitstorm, please don't shout at me, i'm smol
When PewDiePie makes a video, many people are going to see it. People who are going to be hurt by it, people who actually are racist and take those jokes as a validation of their beliefs and people who grow up thinking it's okay to say this stuff, not realising how harmful they are going to be. And that's the whole problem. Humour can easily trivialise things and you have to be careful not to do it. If a father makes sexist jokes in front of his kids, they are going to internalise that and maybe become sexists, even if their father isn't one. People with influence have to be careful with what they say and PewDiePie certainly doesn't care about the damage he is inflicting on his audience.

I'm genuinely curious what you/other people find funny about "death to all jews" or making a guy say "hitler did nothing wrong". It's not even about being offended, I just don't get how it's supposed to be a joke. Maybe I just havent spent enough time on 4chan in my teens to get it.
The way I see it humor works because it always has a grain of truth in it - if you say something completely detatched from reality without context, it wouldn't be funny.
So even if you say it "just as a joke" it will stick as some kind of association in people's heads - furthering prejustices or in the worst case validating assaulters.
