Tbh, I've no idea of the context behind the making of this vid, and only stumbled upon it in some late-night browsing. It's really surreal, and was uploaded less than two weeks before the slew of youtuber abuse scandals -- about when Tom unlisted pretty much all of his videos (I think).

and re: the youtube culture edit - not saying none of it fits, but just looking at the video, some of it doesn't even work in that video to a hilarious degree. like if the best you found for "my friends are dictated by similar subs count"/"only know their screen names" was catrific and a then blurry images of them spending a few seconds socializing with people they've never even made videos with outside a venue? and Dan's bedroom routine was a parody to begin with (not that I loved him for doing that, but you know, another story). and the rando hello kitty selfie stick grab from japan made me lol. and the challege vid they chose was the charity one, which is also kinda awkward. mostly though, they didn't even use the haru pillow with the line "won't come out the closet til i got something to sell about it" and like... if you're already being a kidna inaccurate meanie, why not do you job properly at least?

i find the whole thing so weird though. like when our faves are starting out, all we want is for them to succeed so they can continue to make the stuff that we love - but when they do, we consider it stripped of authenticity because money's involved. and like, money's not *dirty* - it's certainly not fairly distributed, but that's a whole conversation in itself about how the world is set up and the values that are centric to our culture. so as long as the product is good, i think it's mutually beneficial.
(like, if anything, i spend my days hopind d&p would whore themseleves out a bit more and just use their side channels for the occasional daily vlog because i am )

I think there's different levels of "whoring" - I've got no problem with the occasional #spon/balanced review/genuine recommendation or YTers selling merch they've designed/commissioned themselves etc... but when it's in every. single. bloody. video? It gets tedious quickly, I suspect for both the YTer and the audience.

Still not sure what to make of that song/original video. Yes, I'm sure it's supposed to be funny, and maybe I just don't like any of the people in it, but it just seems so spiteful. And hypocritical AF.

I agree with both of you. Although the song was funny and catchy I think it's a bit ironic/hypocritical that they would upload it to youtube, have so many people in it, and that they would try to tweet and spread it around.

Felucca - You are bringing the absolute worst out of me, and I kind of like it? I'm scared. I think all of the fanvid makers got very strongly inspired by the Glitterfaces video, now everyone feels they they can also be creepy af.

Goddamn it youtube. I was so sad that video was so awkward because Charlie was my first youtube crush. I was always surprised it was so awkward it was considering they've done collabs before. Maybe it's because both D&P and Charlie are terrible at them.
