I definitely see this game as another venture into the world of normalizing videos all about finding men attractive to the audience. I sensed the restraint in Phil, and some of the slight overemphasized reacting in Dan, but I don't mind it at all. I'll take that kind of stiffness as they get more and more used to making certain comments onscreen (particularly Phil) and accept it as the wonderful growing pain behavior that it is, imo.

The video itself: cute, not my favorite, but hope they make more since Dan seemed to enjoy it and I enjoy Dan showing something to Phil and anticipating Phil's reactions as a departure from the reversed norm.

Ok, and now for the thing I've just wasted my whole weekend on: gender-specific and gender-neutral pronouns in Dan and Phil's Undertale let's play.

So, as I said I would do it and because I have no social life (and because I also wanted to contribute to the discussion on Dan’s hypothetical preference for the “straight male” part of his audience, but nobody needs my opinion and I am much more interested in his and Phil’s general views on gender anyway), here are the timestamps for all the instances where Dan and Phil used third person pronouns to refer to their character in the Undertale let’s play. Also, I have to say, watching the Alphys date thing after the fight with the guards, it really does seem like Deppy spoiled the guards scene for themselves, at least in some degree, but honestly had no idea about having to roleplay the date with Undyne, Dan is so flustered the whole time, lol (also, makes me wonder how the hell Deppy managed to do the fanfiction segment in TATINOF, even if they – and by “they” I mean most probably Dan – wrote it themselves)

Final thoughts
Ok, so, first, I must say that gender neutral language is still somewhat new to me, despite first encountering it, like, ten years ago, as English isn’t my first language and in Russian (which is my native language) and in French (which is the language I’m using the most at the moment) the way the language system is built makes it quite difficult to speak in gender neutral terms. Second – and following my first point, I won’t really analyze it (y'all are welcome to do it instead) because I don’t speak English that well nor do I know enough about the use of gender neutral pronouns in it (and because I haven’t done anything related to my theoretical linguistics degree in four years, so I’ve forgotten pretty much everything). Three things, however, stood out for me:
1. no third person pronouns for the main character in the first five episodes, except in the very beginning, and no trying to use “they/them” for it without prompting from the game
2. how pretty much all monsters are automatically referred to as “he/him” by both Dan and Phil
3. Dan doubting Mettaton’s gender based on how pink his bedroom was
And no, I still don’t know what that Phil’s “she” in the end was about

Finally, doing all this really reminded me of the time when I was in uni and had to transcribe texts in a language I didn’t speak, shout out to that (Deppy can’t articulate for shit, is all I’m saying).

:52 - Genuine Phil surprise reaction, or not? It's harder to tell if Phil is faking surprise than if Dan is, because we don't often see Dan introducing Phil to games.

1:10 - Phil: So this is your favorite game that you play every night in bed?
1:41 - Phil seemed unimpressed with the Susan name, but brightens at the "magical sprinkle of noise."

2:12 - Phil definitely does look at the camera as though he's about to say something, then just laughs instead. Not sure if it's bc he rethought or Dan had already started talking again.
2:16 - I poured so much of myself into work that my only interaction with men was at the office... to which Phil says, "Is that so bad?" So Phil doesn't mind mingling business and romance. Everyone is shocked, I'm sure.
2:45 - Phil: "Is she gonna fall in love with an animal?" Phil is still expressing disbelief.
3:06 - Phil does not believe girls who fall in love with horses are respectable.
3:30 - Do any hot guys come? Dan rationalizes, I think Phil says "Forward."

3:41 - Dan says, "Commendable." and Phil says, "Maybe he's into it." Wait, who is into what? Did we lose some dialogue to a jump cut there?

7:26 - Dan says, "I expected a few episodes before we started identifying with SusanKun." so he's hoping, I think, for this to be the kind of games they do a series on - which makes sense, much less pressure to play it 'well' and no massive fandom critiquing every choice they make on screen.

8:06 - Dan is so excited about the dating sim aspect.

10:12 - The horse is steaming. Phil is afraid the horse wants to fuck him. Dan reassures him this is not the Sims. (Phil tries to hide his disappointment, probs. Fifty Shades of Neigh.)
10:36 - Phil: "So now are we gonna kiss?" Dan: "Um. Maybe. I don't know. Where's the story going?" How much of that 'um' was Dan processing Phil meant the game?

11:45 - Dan: "Is this romantic or scary?" So I guess Phil doesn't small walls in a lust-driven frenzy very often.
12:08 - Phil: "I feel a bit creepy now." Wait, only just now?

12:36 - Phil asks how the game ends. He does not seem invested in allowing the story to unfold.

So, basically I was scrolling through tumblr, when I found this.

And at first I thought it wasn't Phil, because of the missing chesthair. But then I dug deeper, and looked at some pictures taken around this time, and noticed that Phil had no chesthair back then.

So, also, the "tattoo" (a fake tattoo obv since Phil doesn't have any tattoos that we know of) that you can see in both photos, I zoomed in and tried to "connect" them, and here's what I got.

So idk about you guys but to me that looks like the same tattoo.

Also, note how Phil's tummy (and belly button) looks really similar to the "nude sexay" photo (Also Phil's?) in the picture.




This last one probably looks the most similar. Idk thoughts?
