Good to know I'm not the only one, although the uncomfortable feeling that I get is probably for totally different reasons. I'm just not a big fan of seeing dan/phil (and many other people) with little clothing

I can only speak for myself but I sometimes hear people having arguments/loud conversations quite clearly when its relatively silent and sometimes open the window and peep out too out of curiosity and concern (even if its chilly and I cant really hear them) and I live on the 6th floor. Don't know what exactly its like in their street but its certainly something I cant fault Phil for doing

Phil's name literally means "lover of horses"

I thought the video was really funny personally! Maybe not my favourite ever, but the absurdity of it really appeals to my sense of humour and I would be happy to see it become a series (maybe not a long one, I can't see it being entertaining for more than like 3 episodes tbh).

Like others have said, I've definitely noticed Phil becoming more comfortable with male attraction mentions (or at least, implications), the whole "he's quite a meaty horse as well ... just saying" bit was a step away from innocent!Phil. It definitely felt like he took a while to warm up, but once he did he seemed pretty comfortable and I'm here for it.

It does seem that the video was pretty divisive though, I feel like I've seen an equal number of people who liked it and who disliked it.

Ahhh I know what you mean. I felt inexplicably nervous and couldn't stop shaking/felt really sick when I posted my first comment on a forum, and it got one reply that was kinda negative (but not really, just a difference in opinion). I also find it hard to post anything even vaguely opinionated on the internet. But don't be afraid! I think it's also the curt nature of how text looks on a page which looks like 100x more intimidating. I think I'm desensitized to it now and don't freak out when someone replies

The horse video: nothing to say about the game itself which was quite funny (I'd rather watch that than Happy Wheels or Who's Your Daddy, sorry), but I'm offended by how bad they are with Japanese female names. Ok, and now for the thing I've just wasted my whole weekend on: gender-specific and gender-neutral pronouns in Dan and Phil's Undertale let's play.

So, as I said I would do it and because I have no social life (and because I also wanted to contribute to the discussion on Dan’s hypothetical preference for the “straight male” part of his audience, but nobody needs my opinion and I am much more interested in his and Phil’s general views on gender anyway), here are the timestamps for all the instances where Dan and Phil used third person pronouns to refer to their character in the Undertale let’s play. Also, I have to say, watching the Alphys date thing after the fight with the guards, it really does seem like Deppy spoiled the guards scene for themselves, at least in some degree, but honestly had no idea about having to roleplay the date with Undyne, Dan is so flustered the whole time, lol (also, makes me wonder how the hell Deppy managed to do the fanfiction segment in TATINOF, even if they – and by “they” I mean most probably Dan – wrote it themselves)

Final thoughts
Ok, so, first, I must say that gender neutral language is still somewhat new to me, despite first encountering it, like, ten years ago, as English isn’t my first language and in Russian (which is my native language) and in French (which is the language I’m using the most at the moment) the way the language system is built makes it quite difficult to speak in gender neutral terms. Second – and following my first point, I won’t really analyze it (y'all are welcome to do it instead) because I don’t speak English that well nor do I know enough about the use of gender neutral pronouns in it (and because I haven’t done anything related to my theoretical linguistics degree in four years, so I’ve forgotten pretty much everything). Three things, however, stood out for me:
1. no third person pronouns for the main character in the first five episodes, except in the very beginning, and no trying to use “they/them” for it without prompting from the game
2. how pretty much all monsters are automatically referred to as “he/him” by both Dan and Phil
3. Dan doubting Mettaton’s gender based on how pink his bedroom was
And no, I still don’t know what that Phil’s “she” in the end was about

Finally, doing all this really reminded me of the time when I was in uni and had to transcribe texts in a language I didn’t speak, shout out to that (Deppy can’t articulate for shit, is all I’m saying).

I know how tedious transcribing is, and it's fun to look at the results. It seems as though the data are kind of sparse, though, for doing a thorough linguistic analysis. We will need to keep collecting data .

As for gender-neutral language in English speakers--I think it's so hard for us, because we overwhelmingly hear gendered language (mostly "he", of course). I think it's gotten a little better in the past decade or so, but that means that even people Dan and Phil's age didn't grow up hearing gender-neutral.

I tried really hard with my (now teenaged) daughter. I was frustrated that all the socially-conscious mothers we hung out with called everything that was not explicitly-gendered female "he": animals, stuffed animals, random physcial objects. I found that my easiest defense was to call everything "she", and people thought I was weird.

Most animal characters in books are "he", but I called a lot of them "she" when I read to my kid. Of course, she got confused when she could read the books herself. But maybe in a good way!

tl;dr English-speaking culture teaches English speakers to not be gender neutral, and it's really hard to break out of that, so even baby steps should be applauded!

KoolKatt I have a fluctuating (but generally permissive) tolerance for nudity, I guess, but when it's overtly sexual and especially not something I chose to see then I tend to find it (varying) degrees of uncomfortable. But today has been a bad day for me, so the discomfort bloomed into actual panicky distress.[/offtopic]
I was amused by Horse Boyfriend Simulator in a way that I wasn't for Happy Wheels (which I... didn't enjoy at all) or Save Me Daddy (which had funny moments but I just wasn't really into). I wouldn't necessarily say this video was my sense of humor, but it was somehow closer to my sense of humor than the other two--gentler, I guess.

I don't know if it's a thing I'd watch again, though, when I could be watching them play Bubble Bobble or indulging in pastel and soft things. Having said that, I wouldn't mind it being a very short series; I'd be interested in how much weirder the game might get as it goes on.

Other comments: 1) Dan picking this game and Phil reacting to it is a nice change in dynamic. For sure, that's a thing I wouldn't mind if they did again in the future. 2) I really appreciate that this video is pretty calm. I liked the final Impossible Quiz well enough, but by virtue of what it is, it's very high-strung, and that's pretty much the opposite of what I need atm. (I never thought I'd say that about a video about a horse-dating game, is2g.)

Btw, coffeepenguin: Thank you for the time you took on the Undertale pronoun compilation. It's interesting to see it all compiled together. I'm not very good with analysis, and in this particular case, I only became aware of non-binary genders in the past three or four years so I'm still a work in progress in this area too.

I think I'm actually one of the few "adults" [24 y.o] that would consider themselves as happily part of the "cringey "Phandom. I actually find a lot of the younger crowd more mature and engaging than I am. I guess it speaks of their maturity or of my own inappropriate immaturity, but I do find their enthusiasm addictive. I do try to avoid doing things which I consider rude: stalking specific people that wants to not be associated with Deppy, putting heavily phan-is-in-a-relationship content on the main tag on Tumblr or tweeting them directly at Deppy (basic opinion could be summed with: you can ship all you want and believe in their relationship all you want, but keep it on your corner of the internet), go to creator's YT pages and say stuff like: "I'm only here for Deppy",etc.

But even at this age, I've proven that I can be "cringey" in that I still talk about them to my law school friends who aren't even aware of who Deppy are (Law is a post-grad course in my country and all my classmates' age range from 23-30 ), I have them as my phone background, my personal fb is almost like a glorified tumblr page to them (because I almost have nothing to post about as my life is consumed by books and cases), I tweet @ them (but never Phan things, just a general reaction to whatever they're tweeting), I do watch reaction videos to them (I find others reacting weirdly interesting), click on the clickbaity titles and thumbnails with them in it (because I find it amusing how some other YTers are desperate for the views, become curious about their own content, and there's this irrational fear that if I don't do that it means Deppy's losing popularity), read phanfics a lot (Kudos to all the wonderful authors), watch phanvideos, etc. I reblog and revel in the phan moments in videos.

I haven't seen them so I don't know how I'll react. But I went to a concert of my favorite Kpop group and although I promised myself that I wouldn't scream and be embarrassing, that flew out of the window quickly as the crowd's enthusiasm drew me in and I found myself screaming myself hoarse and singing along with the crowd to my Kpop group's songs.

I don't know if it's because I'm in a bad place in my life right now and have been using Deppy as a crutch. Or maybe it's because I haven't been on the "real world" yet (since I'm still safely snuggled inside the academe), and thus haven't had the full-on adult experience of being with responsibilities. Or maybe it's just that I'm still very much immature, but I could relate a lot to the cringey side of the Phandom and find myself amused and going along for the ride most of the time. I've been in a lot of fandoms before but I find the Phandom most enthusiastic which encourages me to be in it and engage in conversation about them more.

I'm not really sure about what this post is trying to convey. Maybe that being part of the cringey phandom is not at all age-related? Or that not everyone is put-off by it?

i'm 20 and i feel exactly the same as you! i tweet them all the time etc (obv never about phan) im constantly active in the "phandom" i constantly think about them, talk about them, i honestly feel like they're my life sometimes lmao (i have been watching since 2009, 8 years fml) but the only thing i dont do is draw those damn cat whiskers on my face >:( lol

I drew cat whiskers on my face once and it was for Halloween last year. I had to work where I wear a uniform but wanted to do something so I thought I'd be a cat and thought it would be a funny touch to do the whiskers in the same style Dan and Phil do. Shhh...

On the cringey phandom, since the topic has been brought back up: I used to be really ashamed of being in the phandom because of how notorious and known as crazy a lot of people in it are, notably most of the teenage fangirls. I've usually been very vocal about my fandoms and interests, even 'childish' ones. For example one of my biggest fandoms that I've been in for years and run an entire forum for is literally a children's cartoon but I will go in public wearing T-Shirts for it no problem, even if I'm 22 years old. I don't care. Yet sometimes I'm scared to wear my Dan and Phil shirt. I don't get it. I actually saw someone wearing the Dan and Phil fringes sweater in real life yesterday and was too scared to speak to her because of my social awkwardness, so I just hoped she would see my deppy keychain as I was holding my wallet with it on it(she didn't). Oh well.

Haven't posted in a while so won't bother to comment on most of the last few videos, but I loved the horse dating sim video. Ironically I almost downloaded that game literally less than a week ago but decided I'd do it later instead. Now I think I'll wait to watch them play it first. I'm surprised that the like and dislike for it is so split, I don't remember seeing so many people dislike a video as much as they seem to dislike this one very often.
