Also, just something I noticed, in many of deppys videos people are really concerned (maybe not the right word there) about them 'no-homoing' stuff. I just wondered why people are so bothered about it? Is there any other people out there like me, who only watch for the gameplay and their personalities rather than phan moments, or am I definitely on my own here? Like, I instantly knew when watching the Switch video that people would be so worried about the not wanting to lick the same cartridge that it might take away from them how funny the video was. I'm not trying to be rude, I'm genuinely just curious about it.
I will say that it struck me as a "no-homo" moment not because of the spit but because of the "herpes" remark. Because, sure, anyone else's spit on a cold object can be gross even if you love that spit when it's in their mouth. But implying it would give you a sexually-transmitted disease takes it to another level--in several ways: upping the ick factor; sexualizing it; and making it something to be actively avoided. So Dan does seem to have emphasized the point.

For me personally, it's aways jarring when Dan talks like that, even though I know his way of expressing himself is far from refined--liberal amounts of gender/sexuality slurs (particularly in the past), crude jokes, and lots and lots of curse words.

While I don't mind crude language per se (and use it occasionally myself) or off-color jokes, I'd generally rather not hear it, so I sometimes get a bit judgey of Dan when he uses it, especially in service of anything I don't want to hear, like something that can come across as no-homoing.

I find Dan quite gifted with language, from pure romance ("you could go swimming in those eyes"), to interesting metaphors ("how can biology explain"), to quite articulate off-the-cuff rants on liveshows about difficult topics like gender expression. He can be quite eloquent too when using adolescent-boy humor, but I do sometimes want to edit that part out--but he's a real, multi-faceted person and that's part of who he is.

tl;dr: it was no-homo because of herpes not spit

That still doesn't make it no homo. I don't know if people are just using that in place of 'yuck I'm not dating this person', but no homo is homophobic. Any damn gender can have herpes. It's a sexual joke, but it's not homophobic and there is a staggering difference there because one is just crude while the other is offensive. It's unnecessary reaching.

I think there's somewhat obvious context here, that when phandom refers to Dan and Phil's no homoing, they mean specifically their activity of denying phan, like making a point of two bedrooms in Australia DITL. After all, Deppy didn't do the traditional "WHATMEGAYNEVAH" type of no homo since year 2013.

Not that I agree in paying extra attention to the herpes joke. It was an easy joke in relation to obviously yucky proposition.

fancybum wrote: I watch for both them and the gameplay (or personalities in their non-gaming content), but here's the thing: there's only so much to say about a video framed around the gameplay. "That was funny and I liked it./The game was boring but this moment was funny./This game sucks." All of those are conversations that do happen. And then it ends until the next video. And especially when it comes to the games they choose to play, there's really not a lot of material there. I don't know if the same thing entirely goes for personalities as that probably does get discussed more, but personalities stay pretty consistent. The 'phan' aspect is something ongoing (in the sense that it's not definitive, we don't know anything about it in the same way we do about their personalities or how they played a game), so it attracts more discussion/focus. I would love more conversation outside just the phan lens, but at the same time, there's only so much to say? Like if you liked a video: you liked it, the end. Or the opposite. It would be boring for everyone to just pause until the next one, so the ongoing background conversation of their off-camera existence continues in the meantime. Am I over-explaining? I'll stop lol, hope that made sense though.
Definitely not over-explaining, I appreciate the comment. I also would love more conversation outside the phan lens but you're right, there is only so much to say. I do sometimes feel a bit dis-jointed in the phandom because I want to talk Dan & Phil stuff but the phan stuff does get a bit boring for me as someone who is sitting well and truely on the fence of no fucks given, but you're right, there is only so much to talk about that isn't phan related.
pearshaped34 wrote: Is the cartridge licking thing really something people are worrying about? This is the only area of the phandom I keep up with so if people aren't freaking out on here about it I don't see it. I know we've had at least one poster on here say they considered it no-homo but is that the stance of a lot of people rather than the opinion of the odd few?
I'm honestly surprised that that would genuinely concern enough people for it to be a thing. To me Dan not wanting to lick the same piece of plastic as Phil was such a normal thing for anyone to say I didn't even register it as being anything significant when watching.
I don't delve into the phandom other than here and twitter either tbh. What I meant was I watched the video and the first thing I thought was "oh wow, are people not going to like the video because they made a thing about not sharing the cartridge". I wasn't surprised to see a couple of people mention here that it was a "no-homo" type thing as I just knew on watching it that people would want to pick up on it, when to me it was insignificant.

But I find it interesting that they didn't mention nintendo sent them the console (unless they actually bought it themselves, which is highly unlikely considering PJ got one).
I would say they definitely got it for free (those lucky bastards) as I was just watching Switch reviews and noticed a number of youtubers who also got it for free with the exact 3 games Deppy had. Forever salty that these companies send out free consoles to people who could afford to buy one, when I am here really wanting one and trying to save hard whilst I work 60 hours a week to get one

I mean yeah, but they should come up with a better term or just say 'denying phan' because what they're actually saying is D&P not confirming they're in a relationship specifically with each other, or doing things that make it appear that they're not, is homophobic. Which is bananas (and yes very outdated, 2013 is old news).

edit: the way they did it in 2012-2013 is old news, I don't mean they never do it/appear to now.

I didn't see it as a no-homo either. I've literally had the same kind of exchange with my husband. Joking about not wanting to licked something someone else just licked isn't a denial of anything, imo.

I guess props to Evan for not putting Dan in the thumbnail this time, but around 10:52 Luke Cutforth is talking about how he dropped out of uni to do youtube and it leads to a tangent where they're talking about Luke and Dan sleeping in a service station crying themselves to sleep if youtube fails them being neither of them have degrees.

Interesting, I actually liked that video! More Luke than Evan though, we get it you have a Masters and fallback career Evan, tell us more . The Dan mention didn't feel gratuitous or anything, it came up naturally and was relevant (I wonder how many people used Dan dropping out as an example to follow for their own career decisions... I don't know Luke's timeline with school but that would be interesting). I really like people having (relatively) straightforward and honest discussions about youtube, especially in terms of how money influences (or doesn't) decisions/enjoyment, etc. You know, the stuff D&P (or maybe just bigger YTers as a whole) don't tend to go into. Fascinating stuff

edit: aren't we supposed to be getting a Switch video today? Did I imagine that? It's already after 8 UK time, soooo...

I guess by "they" you mean (at least) me.

After carefully putting scare-quotes around "no-homo" in the body of my post, I neglected to do so in the "tl;dr", apparently obscuring what I had to say by somehow coming off as homophobic.

I do stick by my assertion that a "spit+herpes" remark is stronger than a "spit" remark, but perhaps that's just me.

I think there are many reasons "no-homo" is used to describe the phenomenon under discussion. One is that "no-homo" is shorter and catchier than "anti-phan/anti-non-straightness". Another is that Dan did explicitly and often use that language in the past. I don't think it's fair to insinuate that Deppy's fans came up with that terminology all on their own.

We need a better term to cover the whole of "anti-phan/anti-non-straightness", but it's hard to make up terms and make them stick. I don't have a good suggestion, but I stand ready to back whoever does.

Nooo no no, I'm not saying people calling what D&P are doing 'no-homoing' are homophobic themselves. I'm saying that saying D&P are 'no homoing' is calling D&P homophobic. And that's just not the case (especially with the things being discussed currently). And I never insinuated anything about D&P fans making it up themselves, it's a term that exists. And it's rooted in homophobia. There's nothing homophobic about a herpes jokes (unless he full on said 'licking something another guy licked will give me herpes lol gayness' which.. isn't what he said or even remotely hinted at). But I'm harping on this too much, I'll stop.

Idk but usually I could get the notifications on phone for about 10-ish (UK/Irish time)?

They DID say in the Cartridge vid that there would be a vid of them playing 1-2 Switch over the weekend. I'd expect them to upload the vid in the next hour before calling it for Monday evening.

We've gotten so used to a vid every 2-3 days! And to think that last year, we were suffering from a Deppy drought! :D

Yeah they seem to usually upload 8-10pm GMT lately (Except for the Pastel Edits video which was hastily uploaded at 11pm :sideeye:)

sorry for going off topic, but my obsessive personality is still stuck on their licking video (plus my dog wouldn't let me out of bed this morning), so I decided to scroll through the comments which is always a bad idea b/c the cringe is so strong there. but anyway, it reminded me of when they played minecraft, a bunch of gamer bros leaving rude comments, and I was wondering what Deppy expected when making a video that would almost certainly get trending. Did they think they would get more subscribers? Or was it just for one-off viewers? For the fun of it? To feed their inner trolls?

Also someone responded to a comment by saying "drink a cup of water and calm down," which I found hilarious.

Does anyone have any ideas of what Dan and/or Phil's next main channel video will be about?

The vid on the trending page is attracting those edgy 12 year old straight boys.
I think they have a filter on the comments for swear words (and the word "phan") but even with that i've seen a couple of homophobic slurs. I imagine there are many more insulting comments not getting published.

Yeah I recall the same with the pastel edits video, such as a comment by someone with a minecraft avatar which was a string of homophobic and racist slurs. It's inevitable if a video ends up trending

I hadn't thought to look at the comments, almost the first obviously non-Phandom one I found made me laugh, "Hey dude in the blue shirt, 2006 wants their haircut back." Phandom's straight in there telling him "nailed it".

OT, but I had a little think about the gaming discussion we had a bit ago and how I can't quite put my finger on what it is I want. I'm not a gamer by any means and am mostly in it for the Dan and Phil interaction, but yet I find myself emphatically arguing for more console and 1v1 games. I really want more "legit" games, whatever that means, and especially with 2017 bringing us a new Phil, I want to see how this new Phil works with and against Dan in more competitive scenarios.

I suddenly realized that I would kill a bitch to see them on the same team vs 2 other people. I need another collab. Bring on PJ and Sophie or something. Imagine the team work!

Also more handicapped gaming. Because that series should have never left us.

So, while it's a bit quiet and the gaming channel is spewing vids out left and right, what are y'all hoping to see done this year?

Okay, I absolutely agree with both of these points. Please yes can I see this famed mental connection they have. I don't even care who they play against.

(Though - imagine, in our wildest fantasies, a Martyn/Cornelia vs Dan/Phil game night?)

But in terms of what I want from the gaming channel... I'm bucking the trend by saying I don't want more DvP and I don't want games where Dan seems anxious at the idea of losing. My problem with competition based games is that Dan is both a sore loser and a sore winner. I think most of the console games people want them to play are the kinds of games Dan would be preoccupied with wanting to live up to some kind of skill level at.

That doesn't go for every console game, of course. Bubble Bobble was a godsend but the whole premise was Phil "teaching" Dan to play so Dan had no obligation to be good, or the best, even though they were competing. He had a build in excuse for not being better than Phil at it.

Dan's attitude and generally just not enjoying the overly competitive bratty vibe is why I tend to prefer the flash games that both of them find absurd and don't take serious. But if they're uploading this regularly, I'd definitely enjoy a good mix of flash games, console games, and maybe - also in 'wildest dreams' territory - the occasional card or board game thrown in there.

I'd love to see them do something else like Just Dance or the kinect (I think?) sports one. Something that gets them moving around. :D I like those kinds of games irl with friends and they're more fun if nobody's very good at them, and I think that's part of why I like seeing D&P play them. The goofiness balances out the competitiveness.

I would also totally be down for them to team up against another pair of people, though.

I'd like them to spew out some musical games like guitar hero or some karaoke-based ones (love them singing and it would be funny). Also something story-based, provided deppy won't be making fun of the game the entire time and try to actually get into the story and characters. (Not a gamer, but I'm currently playing Night in the Woods, it's v beautiful and also quite the Dan brand, existential without the cringiness.)
With such frequent uploads a variety would be great, but they probably can't play anything too intense that would require a lot of time to play and edit.
