I will say that it struck me as a "no-homo" moment not because of the spit but because of the "herpes" remark. Because, sure, anyone else's spit on a cold object can be gross even if you love that spit when it's in their mouth. But implying it would give you a sexually-transmitted disease takes it to another level--in several ways: upping the ick factor; sexualizing it; and making it something to be actively avoided. So Dan does seem to have emphasized the point.missemma wrote:
Also, just something I noticed, in many of deppys videos people are really concerned (maybe not the right word there) about them 'no-homoing' stuff. I just wondered why people are so bothered about it? Is there any other people out there like me, who only watch for the gameplay and their personalities rather than phan moments, or am I definitely on my own here? Like, I instantly knew when watching the Switch video that people would be so worried about the not wanting to lick the same cartridge that it might take away from them how funny the video was. I'm not trying to be rude, I'm genuinely just curious about it.
For me personally, it's aways jarring when Dan talks like that, even though I know his way of expressing himself is far from refined--liberal amounts of gender/sexuality slurs (particularly in the past), crude jokes, and lots and lots of curse words.
While I don't mind crude language per se (and use it occasionally myself) or off-color jokes, I'd generally rather not hear it, so I sometimes get a bit judgey of Dan when he uses it, especially in service of anything I don't want to hear, like something that can come across as no-homoing.
I find Dan quite gifted with language, from pure romance ("you could go swimming in those eyes"), to interesting metaphors ("how can biology explain"), to quite articulate off-the-cuff rants on liveshows about difficult topics like gender expression. He can be quite eloquent too when using adolescent-boy humor, but I do sometimes want to edit that part out--but he's a real, multi-faceted person and that's part of who he is.
tl;dr: it was no-homo because of herpes not spit
