honestly as a dude in makeup what is the obsession with dan putting some urban decay on like?? his comments about liking it tend to be well worded, vague statements to show he isn't actively against it as a concept... the "it's just so nice to see people break gender roles, he'd look cute!!" is so weird like not everyone is trapped by gender roles because they don't wear dresses judith, the point is to do the things that are most comfortable to you not to wear mascara so you're a more acceptable millennial political queer

Thank you. Breaking gender roles is not just about boys wearing make-up and dresses, it’s about everyone doing and wearing whatever they feel comfortable with, no matter what society might think about it. And it’s not about them “looking cute”. I’m not trying to attack anyone on here and I don’t think anyone on this forum means any harm but this fixation on Dan wearing make-up and nail polish is super weird to me. I like androgynous styles as much as the next person and I applaud everyone brave enough to just wear whatever they want no matter what others think but I really don’t like the objectification that goes along with it.

I haven’t seen that on here but the phandom is very quick when it comes to pressuring Dan into “breaking gender roles” and I don’t think all of them really do it because they want to end sexism... Breaking gender roles is about normalising boys in make-up / girls doing typically masculine things, not about idolising and fetishising them. And I don’t think we’ll achieve anything when it comes to normalising it as long as people keep falling over themselves telling guys in make-up how cute they are. Honestly, I wish people were this enthusiastic about girls not wearing make-up or doing other things that aren’t deemed feminine but the applauding crowd is much smaller when it’s women breaking gender roles and I wonder why that is…

tl;dr: I hate how many people totally objectify and idolise men wearing make-up and dresses. It's not about how pretty you think it is (even though it's absolutely valid if you think it's pretty of course), it's about people being comfortable in their own skin and the clothing and make-up they wear or don't wear.

I like this kind of video where they actually compete one against the other. I didn't particularly find it funny until the last part where Phil started talking about Dan practicing at 3 am, I like when Phil tells stories and Dan's laughter was adorable.

Really happy that they played this game. :D
I don’t like them being flipped.
We now know that Phil is a spammer when he wins.
Kind of figured that Dan would win, but I was still rooting for Phil (like always).
I totally believe Phil that Dan does bomb training missions at 3 am.
I love how Dan and Phil basically play Mario Kart online as one person (in the sense that they always team up), we already knew this but it is still cute.

Well, overall fun vid that didn't run too long like some of others. I didn't really find any moments that really stood out, but I did like the following:
1) How they swapped spots and then had to flip the video because they got the sides wrong, and kept looking at the wrong screen. Why are you dorks like thisss
2) How comically tiny the controller is in their giant paws. My fingers felt phantom cramps just watching them play. Dan kept calling his hands tiny instead of the switch, that was fun
3) They really did like playing it! I never do console gaming so I don't know if they're actually good or not, but they both seemed pretty good (though Dan seemed much better, at least with the bombs and the not running into walls as much)
4) The ending bit where they said something to the effect of "if you see two guys called Dan and Phil from Britain, that's actually us'. The implied 'we're always going to be playing together' might be my goggles being too tight (which it always is lbr) heh

I see the Dan puns in the ending bubbles aren't Daniel-themed yet. Why does he lie all the time! Why!!!

I probably won't be rewatching this one, but it was pretty good.

I think Dan will figure out what he wants to do in his own time, while the phandom can spread "trends" of what they want to see him dress up as for them comfortable with, it's ultimately his decision, and I wouldn't lose sleep over it. I think, in some cases, Dan does hint at finding something interested, and he has painted his nails out of his own choice, after all. Honestly, it's hard to distinguish fetishizing and just general appreciation and I'm not sure if attacking someone who says, "it's nice to see Dan be more open with himself" as someone who does that. I think it's merely the choice he makes, and if Dan did smokey eye make up tomorrow ( it would be really fucking random and out of nowhere tbh) but ultimately it's his choice, I wouldn't blame the fandom.

I really liked the video, and it's refreshing to see them do a video on something they're actually good at. I would be interested in actually just seeing them perform against strangers online, though I doubt they would go to the trouble of that. Does anybody else find it strange whenever they mirror the screen, they look strangely nicer, if that makes any sense? Maybe it's that I've watched so much of them, their faces just look like generic Dan and Phil, but when they're flipped, they look strange and different, and I begin to notice and appreciate the small details of their faces?

i like this video so much! it's funny and light and genuinely competitive and it's a game they like and they had so much fun. dan 100% definitely does do bomb training missions at 3am, that is hilarious. he looked mildly betrayed that phil would reveal such a secret, i love these giant nerds.

on the makeup discussion, i agree with the last few posts, even while hoping dan wears makeup (bc i love makeup and can't stand wearing it myself). he's not a dress up doll, so he can and should wear whatever (lbr our opinions do not matter that much, he's gonna do what he wants). ideally people would react to guys in makeup/pastel colors/feminine clothes like "ooh nice!" and leave it at that, but people overreact. echh at gender stuff being fetishized, that's not cool.

I wonder if we got another "whiny" Dan with this video, because I recall Phil saying they only play a Dan vs Phil once, and yes this another version of it but it's the same game, but considering Dan lost in a game that he's likely one of the best, I wonder if he actually ask (whine) until Phil agreed to a Dan vs Phil

I didn't mean to attack anyone, especially not on here since I haven't seen the behaviour I was talking about here. And appreciation is completely different from objectification anyway. I didn't mean people who'd like to see Dan more open and comfortable with himself, like, same. More like your usual Tumblr phandom reaction of "Omg, it's so cute!" which I find very off putting.

I loved the video! I just really like the game and I love watching them play it, their first Mario Kart video is one of my favourite videos on the gaming channel. The side switching fail sure was a highlight and I also loved the synchronised screaming. Also bomb training missions at 3 am sound very Dan.

This game damn. I spent last saturday playing it with my friends, but I'm shit at mario kart (I used to be great at the DS version but I can't handle wii gaming) so I watched them a lot, which I love doing. It reminded me of that but more intense. My heart was racing so fast (I was hoping Phil would win again bc that would be hilarious but ah well)

Phil's joke about the 3am bomb training was so funny, and so was the the fact that he spams the "Horray!" button on regional/global mode. Plus the switching round, only to find that they would have been the correct way initally - poor guys, they can never quite figure out the right way round.

Nice lil vid, but I s2g I need Phil to win in the next one or I'm unstanning Daniel Howell

I agree with most of this, but I'd just like to point out women are celebrated for doing masculine things all the time, and have been for much longer than men have been celebrated for embracing femininity. People praise strong badass women in the media and in fiction who aren't typically feminine, actively voice their disdain about the frivolity of their female peers, and are generally all like "I'm not like OTHER girls". Women can wear trousers and shirts, which were historically considered masculine but can now be seen as gender-neutral clothing, and even suits and more typically adrogynous fashion and barely anyone would bat an eyelid, but men still can't wear skirts or makeup and have the same public reaction. I think there's a positive uphill trend with people more widely embracing femininity in both men and women, but femininity in general is still not as celebrated as masculinity, in my opinion. I know I've struggled with internal misogyny for most of my existence. But maybe rather than it being a fetishistic thing, people are also just excited for Dan to wear make-up and do his nails because, to a mostly female audience, they may feel flattered to see him take an interest in something considered typically feminine. Just my take on it. I'm really not bothered about Dan 'smashing those gender roles' though. He's not typically feminine in day-to-day life so it would seem out of character for him to genuinely take an interest in make-up, but if he wants to try it and doesn't feel pressured into it, then of course I'd support him.

Edit: er, I mean, cute video, I laughed a lot :D *crawls back into the shadows*

i loved their mario kart video! when i saw this come up in my notifications i was like "oh snap i was hoping they'd play this game!" i watched game grumps play it yesterday so i was like hmm i hope they play it, and they did. my dreams came true

loved the video though! cute bants, and i'm not surprised dan won tbh bc he seems to be v good at mario kart. phil was cute with choosing the tanuki (sp?) mario and that closet furry comment dan made made me laugh i enjoyed the video overall though. i hope they come back to it again and replay it sometime but with racing instead of the battle mode. :D

that 3am bomb training comment was hilarious though omg.

I haven't followed either of them on Twitter for very long, but does Phil usually tweet like this? It sounds very Dan to me, even with the capitals o_O I tried to scroll a bit down his history to check, and his inconsistency with capitals at the start of sentences confuses me. Don't phones usually either auto-cap all sentence starters, or none? Does iPhone auto-correct have some strange quirk?

Well in their last liveshow together , he actually made a point that he bought it at Bondi Beach so it wasn't "fake" (don't remember the exact word)so this tweet seems consistant to that comment

I absolutely loved the new video. And not even because I've been begging the universe for them to do a Mario Kart battle video for a million and a half years.

First and foremost we got some old-school, competitive Dan back for a bit there and I am ALL ABOUT IT. Particularly the whole 8:55-9:03-ish section where Dan's getting flustered. It was all just channeling 2010 videos so much.

I also really enjoy Phil being genuinely competitive at something he's good at. It's so satisfying. I felt like we got a lot of comments from the both of them that were the sort of casual shit they'd say if they played this without a camera on.

Also... Wuhu Town... and Dan's face expecting that to become a euphemism that Phil 100% was not about to go with.

Other things that made me genuinely LOL: Dan's quiet "closet furry" comment and jumpcut at 1:49 and northern!Phil making an appearance for a hot second at 8:22. I'm all kinds of heart eyes rn.

I love Mario Kart and I really like watching them compete when they're on a more even playing field, I don't think I stopped smiling during the whole video. :D Those controllers look painfully small, though. I know they have gigantic hands, especially Dan, but they look like they'd be uncomfortably small even for a more average-sized adult.

Hmm as a person who is a lot like Phil- (I'm quiet but fairly confident in myself but I don't speak up and I love horror although ppl think that's weird bc of my quiet personality and I love MUSE and a lot of Phils actions that seem mysterious to some people make a lot of sense to me) so I'm not going t discuss sexuality bc Idk that's for him to say stuff about. But here I see who I think Phil is based on who I am-
He's been talked over his whole life but learned to eventually attempt to talk even though he still gets talked over

He loves horror and MUSE becuase he feels like they speak to a part of him that wishes for a life other than a normal life

He is stuck in his own little world at points and he won't share what's in that world to anyone

He is observant

He has strong opinions but won't express them unless he absolutely has to

He is scared of attachment which is why he may not be as open toward emotional topics than Dan is

He is a lot less confident than he says he is and wants to create the impression that he is confident and has hadt the perfect life bc he doesn't feel like he has he right to complain about not anything as he is aware of his privilege being white and male and from a loving family

The happiest time of his life was childhood

He loves few people but he loves those people with everything

He doesn't speak that much because he has tried to speak and given up and accepted that he is never going to be confident enough

He is genuinely happy but he is very afraid of being sad (possibly again?)

He doesn't express opinions that much becuase he doesn't see the point anymore

He believes that most people are better and more talented than him

He doesn't dwell on these points like most people would he accepts them and is confident in who he is and know exactly what his strengths and weaknesses are

He loves his family very much

He misses people deeply

He tried not to think too much

He knows exactly how people view him and has learned to Not let it bother him

He's happy and satisfied but there are parts of him that gen knows his audience DOENST know bc he is always so careful not to reveal them

He sees a lot more that u think he does

He is kind and people like him becuase he isn't empathetic and he knows that

Okay now a lot of u are wondering where I got this "BS" and I could provide an explanation for most of these but there are people like Phil- people who are alluring in a strange way- people who at first glance u think u have them figured out but I don't. I can't put it in words but as a person who is like Phil (or atleast Phils YouTube persona- he's really not that innocents BTW like at all) I sort of get him. Tell me if u free or disagree- and I could be absolutely wrong for many of these but tbh I don't think I am

Oh also he is really intelligent and dumbs himself down on purpose and he is good at arguing
He is also self conscious
He is more socially awkward than Dan
He wants someone who will just sit and listen to him and not judge him as he blurts out every single thought in his head

He knows that he is intelligent
He knows that he is loved
He doesn't want to change that
He is scared of being alone
He knows exactly what he is and he is aware of his good and bad qualities and he knows what he is worth but he thinks it isn't much
He wasn't surprised when Dan surpassed him in subs
He wishes he could go back to being a kid
He isn't prone to anger at other people becuase he is so emphathetic but sometimes he wants to scream and end all of this

Wow this sounds really depressing but the people who smile the brightest do so bc they've finally learned to be happy after years of their brain tormenting them- his message is to stop thinking about life too much and just focus on what is happening right now and think about what u have not what u don't

If u look at his positivity closely u will see its actually a very clear attempt to surround himself with happy thoughts so the ugly ones don't torment him

To add my thoughts on the femininity discussion, I think people should just wear whatever they want, gender doesn't matter. That being said, I'm not happy about Dan being feminine just for the sake of breaking down gender roles, I'm happy that he's so much more comfortable expressing than ever before.
