Wow lots of good conversations today! I was trying to keep up this afternoon, but it was the kiddo's birthday. (We went bowling, to a pizza buffet with an arcade and to an indoor mini golf range with an alien theme in "freaky 3D". Seriously it was so amazingly weird. All the black lighting and lasers reminded me of the "Riverdale" course, and it just made me want more Golf With Friends. And for D&P to actually experience a place like it. I don't know how common 3D mini golf is. This definitely warranted the term "crazy golf".)
Umm but yeah, not much to add to the gender discussion. Though it made me realize I know next to nothing about lad culture. Also I'm sick of my mom asking my husband if guys painting their nails is the new trendy thing every time she sees him. Anywhoo...
I enjoyed Phil's video, but I definitely need a second watch through, as I don't feel like I got as much out of it as some of you. Thanks for the time stamps dizzy. I'm going to make proper use of them.
I think we're not as critical of Phil's videos because we were never asked to be. Dan talks about the quality threshold of his videos and makes a big deal about it, which I think can lead us to feel disappointed if he's missed the mark. I would love to see Phil show more creativity, but his videos still make me happy.
I knew next to nothing about O before today, beyond their name and that there was conflict. Gross. Definitely not watching or giving them any attention. Mind you Dan has joked about reinacting The Milk Fic himself, but yeah, that's different.
(I just got done with letting about a dozen of AmazingPhil videos from Easter Baking 2015 to Halloween Baking 2014 play in reverse order and goodness all their interactions from then are lovely. Ya know what with the writing and just before Happy boys I'm emotional.)

I didn't know about this! That's brilliant. Do you know if there are any other domains like this? I feel like they've mentioned random urls before.fondsmiles wrote: I immediately was very sure that phil completely trolled everyone, including dan (which was probably one of his big motivators, let's be real).
we're talking about a guy here who'll randomly say cushionstack.com in a video, then to not google it, and then actually buys the domain and links it to his merch shop. what phil does best is trolling. and i love him for it

Eh, I think it's become kinda common for other YouTubers (and fans) to refer to D&P as their "dads" I know Tyler Oakley did (mind you he's admitted to shipping them so )Susanisnotafish wrote: Do I have my Phan goggles on too tight bc I feel Nathan saying deppy are his parents implies he ships it or thinks they are together?

Since it seems like nobody replied to this part, フィル is the correct katakana spelling of Phil. フィール would be like PheelAwesomesauceness wrote: (Also on a side note, I think the rendering of their names might sound better if they used フィール instead of フィル but I'm just being terribly nit picky at this point. I enjoyed the video!
Phil was definitely being tongue-in-cheek in the liveshow about it I think, it was hard to tell at the time as the video hadn't come out yet so there was a possibility he seriously had thought up an all-new format. But given the jokey, sarcastic way they were talking about the concept in the beginning of the video and Phil's tweet about waiting for an Emmy I think it's safe to say he was 100% joking when he said he'd been thinking up the concept for years.
He's well aware it's not exactly high-brow content, and I'm sure he's under no illusions regarding its originality. That's what I love about Phil though, that he doesn't really care that much about integrity on youtube (a la a certain group of youtubers *cough* jack howard and friends *cough*). He's able to joke about it, and I love that he was able to keep such a straight face while hyping up his video, being sarcastic all the while.
All in all - it was a fun video, not awkward at all and I enjoyed it immensely!
re: Onision - I despise him and I hope Dan and Phil both block him, I'd managed to forget about him after his stint last year and I'm mad he forced me to remember his existence

True, but Nathan refers to them as "my two new parents", which sounds like he's implying that he has more than two parents, which to me doesn't really read like him saying D&P are a couple. (Not that I don't find the idea of D&P adopting Nathan together cute.)Susanisnotafish wrote:I feel like calling them "parents who adopted me" implies them being together whereas calling them Dads is like calling them senpais.somethingsketchy wrote:Didn't like every YouTuber at VidCon call them dads?karma_yeah wrote:Is it possible for Phan goggles to be on too tight?Susanisnotafish wrote:Do I have my Phan goggles on too tight bc I feel Nathan saying deppy are his parents implies he ships it or thinks they are together?droopy wrote:bless this post, an oasis in an onion-scented desertBuffyFiona wrote:

I honestly just see it as a "senpai" thing. I dont think Nathan is trying to ikoly anything between them. I feel he's kust calling them his new parents because 1. They're a package together and 2. They're significantly older than he issomethingsketchy wrote:Susanisnotafish wrote:True, but Nathan refers to them as "my two new parents", which sounds like he's implying that he has more than two parents, which to me doesn't really read like him saying D&P are a couple. [offtopic]The redirect to their merch store has made me really, really, REALLY want a Japan jumper in ash grey. It would match the rest of my wardrobe perfectly and it's so cute (everything I own is black/white/red/blue/grey apart from one pink jumper and I only own about 5 things that are red/blue - it would fit in so well)
Can I have an older adult tell me how much of a bad idea it is.... [/offtopic]
re: gender discussion. I've slept on it, thought about it. Have a small essay that nobody wanted from your friendly neighbourhood Sociology nerd. Dan very obviously breaks the big gender stereotypes, which has been discussed to death. Phil I think is way more subtle. Obviously this is in the context of western/British masculinity but he has gone against the 'trend' quite a lot in very subtle ways. He has a BA in English - the vast majority (over 2/3) of English degrees are awarded to women. He dyes his hair, and not to hide grey or anything, he dyes his hair a completely different colour to what is natural. He projects himself as quite gentle and caring, which are attributed as quite feminine traits . He admits to having interests that aren't overtly masculine, and disliking ones that are associated with masculinity. An interesting one for me is how he can be quite submissive in group situations ('can Phil express an opinion') which is more associated with women - he gets talked over quite easily and I don't think I've ever seen evidence of him asserting himself, at least in a way that would make other people uncomfortable. He is also comfortable attributing emotion to things, and showing himself as emotional (Gotta love toxic masculinity). He'd rather get a cocktail with a fresh flower than get a pint and I love him for that. That may not seem a big deal to a lot of people, but cocktails are something that are seen to be decidedly feminine (especially in the North of England in my experience, I've been in fancy cocktail bars that use like dry ice or have drinks that change colour and had the guys I was with order pints), and to be able to say fuck it and order the one with the flower (again v feminine) while with other men who are doing something different is pretty impressive. Its against so many established norms, yet is something so trivial, and I think that is where Phil is best at breaking stereotypes and being himself.
Basically, while Dan is quite overt in his breaking of gender stereotypes, Phil is quite doing a similar thing although less overtly. I definitely think Phil is comfortable with his gender (which is important) and is also comfortable with not being the stereotypical man. Phil breaks gender stereotypes in a way which still allows him to identify with his gender which I think is important.

That's part of what keeps me interested in both of them -- their deep awareness of who they are and the ways they find to have fun with it for us and for themselves. It's a sign of intelligence.
Honestly, it's the combination of their intelligence, humor, kindness, and chemistry that keep me interested. (British accents and being easy on the eyes=added bonus)

I'm not caught up yet since page 8 but since I keep coming in late, just to add I loved the video. Anthony is adorable, he's done so well to adopt the phandom. It wasn't difficult, all he had to do was collab with his friends and be funny and cute, I suppose, but still. Clever dude. He is more like Dan than maybe they let on, I think, just quite a sweet bloke.
I was surprised by Phil's simple game straight from that old video with the magazine and the close ups of Dan or Phil. I didn't think it was trolling until people said so on here, he was so earnest in the liveshow. Funny how I fell for this sweet wide-eyed boy two years ago and now I occasionally want to smack the cheeky git
He's a good actor. He looked hella fine in his denim jacket, it accentuates his broad shoulders. Loved the speedy text at the end too. I didn't even try pausing cos it was so fast, I've tried before and it was so hard to stop at the right moment, but thankfully we have each others' backs in this phandom. No rats harmed, good to know.

I agree! I feel like a bad phan but I was all about Anthony in this video - he's looking good at the moment, and especially good there (that little kiss curl ). He's adorable and I'm glad he's doing well, it's a pretty brave thing to go out on your own after so long as a duo (and then a group that they didn't seem to have much control over but I digress), he's played it really well so far!flarequake wrote:I'm not caught up yet since page 8 but since I keep coming in late, just to add I loved the video.
