I'm a big fan of Tom's so I may be biased, but I found the video great, exactly what I love to see from Tom and Dan respectively. I think his humour and style of video isn't for everybody, and that's cool, but I have to admit that Dan's acting was great.
I sometimes find that a lot of the supporting actors (Tom's friends and collaborators) can be a little too over the top and fake, but Dan brought a kind of subtlety to his role that I don't see very often. I think it's important when understanding Tom's videos is that he isn't attempting to convey a deep meaning, or to inspire the viewer-it's just pure entertainment and mindless comedy. Though, I think Dan brought something new, I felt that Tom wrote the role with Dan in mind and Dan seemed to be a character separate to the motivations of Tom as a character. Dan was interesting, seemed to have other motivations, usually the supporting character in Tom's video don't have much to say other than being an audience surrogate and to be the straight-man to Tom's wise-guy. I don't know if it's my prior knowledge of Dan that influences this, but I do feel like Dan's character was really fleshed out, and was something that Dan carried out himself in his acting.
I know it's just a joke I throw around, but hypothetically speaking, in some wild scenario that deppy ever did a comedy or skit show, I feel like the kind of character Dan was in today's video is the kind of person I'd like to see in that video. It was everything we know about Dan, but also in an accessible way to an audience blind to who Dan is. I feel like there's a lot of potential for Dan, doing collabs such as this. It may push him to try new things. It makes me wish Phil would try acting like this, the kind of "yes-um-im-british-yes" persona he puts into other people's videos does my head in when I know he's done better in the past.
Now, remember the Markiplier video from earlier on? Terrible. Compare the two. With Tom's video you can see who he has stuck to a forumla, I don't think his humour is for everybody, but he has a structure and it's easy to understand (albeit the alien throwaway joke towards the end, for the double-meaning of the title). He has a distinct style of video making, tone, and is always clear and concise with the jokes, lines and characters. However, Markiplier's amateur video making is just a once-off fluff piece, draws in some fans, but will be forgotten tomorrow. Even if you don't like Tom's style, there's a distinct difference in craft and work put into that Mark's video lacks.
I do wonder in the case of Dan and/or Phil ever did a project that required acting (different from the performing of their stage show) that they would be able to draw the distinction between creating a fluff piece and something that's genuinely accessible and easy to understand? I feel like it's really the difference between the two of them: Phil may be only comfortable with the fluff, while Dan might try and branch out into something more genuine, whole and complete as a video/project. I do feel that they are capable of it, and they both seem to have very different performance styles, many people preferred Phil's performance on stage, but Dan seems the only one who can separate himself as a "person" and as a "character." This has been a ramble, but it's always on my mind whenever I see a video like Tom's and wonder what they would be like outside of their comfort zones. I'd like to hear other people's opinions about Dan and/or Phil in terms of content, acting, anything I touched on really.

I think Phil and Dan both are good actors when they play characters in their videos. Phil's older videos especially show some good characterizations.
I think Dan should have put his "don't talk to me" jacket over his face instead of the box. Dan with guns is interesting.

Wow, bloopers way better than the original video, lmao. Poor Phil.
As far as Tom's video... I'm not super impressed but also really not holding it against him. I didn't expect this video to be quite a normal Tom sketch because we know (assuming this was meant to be the Tinder spon) that his script got rejected seven or eight times before they settled on a final one. I imagine he had to compromise a lot of what he'd have originally put in. Plus we know from his weekly vlog that he accidentally left out a big line and they had to work around that, and that they only had a few days turnaround. Basically this video just made me sad we didn't get whatever the original concept was. (And sad that it seems like after putting him through all that script rejection they still pulled the spon deal.)
Dan's acting could still use some work to me as well but I mean... Tom definitely wrote him a character that played to Dan's strengths, since he really just... wrote Dan being Dan, lmao.

I loved the new skit! Dan as a normal person who gives wingman advice was new and exciting. Made me laugh out loud a few times, The hand boob thing and the don't talk to me box. I'm not a big fan of tom's recent 'spew a bunch of jokes in a row' thing, but I think he's figuring out that it doesn't work as well as he thinks it does since there is less of it each time.

i fully agree. i think dan is a much better and more believable actor. he is just more genuine even when he isn't being genuine. i think tom asks him to be in his videos because of this.000dia000 wrote:I'm a big fan of Tom's so I may be biased, but I found the video great, exactly what I love to see from Tom and Dan respectively. i saw tatinof in nyc and, even though they were just acting in their personas, i consistently find phil to be a little stilted when he is out of his box (lol youtube formatting joke). it's too "big" and exaggerated - i actually have always said he would be a hilarious host or character on a children's show.
phil is an entertaining youtuber and a pioneer on the platform, but i don't think he is as talented at acting
we can reference Mark's bloopers for that as well (plus it's just cute af)

Phil almost knocking down the green screen, my clumsy boy
The Markiplier video was quite maeh, I really didn't understand what was the point or even the joke, but then again I don't follow either him or Jack so that's probably why.
I liked TomSka's video a lot! I love him and his sketches are usually super entertaining, and I like how he and Dan play along in a very smooth way in the video. Dan throwing the gun had me dying. I too wish we could've known what was the original idea for the video, and part of me still wish we had that supposedly Dan and Phil on a date sketch ;_;
I also would love to have a solo Phil in a TomSka video, just to see what that would be like.

I've never seen any of Tomska's content before but jesus christ that was awful. I need a palate cleanser because that was just disgusting. Jokes about groping women, following them home and going after them with guns to make them sleep with you is not my bag. I feel like I've stumbled into the bad side of youtube with "response" videos and "LOL FEMINAZI EXPOSED" shit. Jesus...
nope.

Phil's skincare routine: He mentioned in a live show once that he cleanses his face in the shower and then uses 'clinique for men' moisturizers afterwardsrizzo wrote:Sliding in with Phil LS timestamps for this week, because it was a short one, I have nothing to do at work today, and I’m covering alittledizzy’s shift at the Secret Phan HQ, I mean, uh… it’s fun!
Tom video: I enjoyed those bloopers a lot more than the actual video, if I'm being honest.
EDIT: finally a new gaming video, I've been deprived.

While those jokes don't sit well with me usually, knowing that Tom is VERY socially conscious and concerned about things like sexual assault makes them more palatable.plath wrote:I've never seen any of Tomska's content before but jesus christ that was awful. personally didn't like the sketch, I mean, it's well produced and the acting was decent, of course, but it didn't make me laugh and to be completely honest it was pretty weak compared to rejects. the script was just plain bad. I can't really say much about Dan's acting skills there, he was basically playing a Dan and there wasn't anything in particular that could show off his abilities. I would really love to see him play in something more serious and someone less "himself" at some point. and something not over the top, because I know he can be really good and expressive. as for Phil, I watched many of his older videos and realized he can be pretty good at acting, too. not great, obviously, but definitely better than it can seem lol. don't know why he stopped showing this side of himself, but I miss it.
and Markiplier's bloopers were better than an actual video wish Logan Paul wasn't in it, even though I don't know, nor do I want to know about the whole youtube drama, he's just annoying and I've had enough of him and his brother everywhere.

i thought i'd add my useless opinion. i'm a big fan of tom and i liked the video but it's far from his best. and as for the markiplier vid, i watched like the first 10 seconds and thought it was boring, i saw gifs of dnp's parts and they were shit too so i'll probs never watch it.

I think context, the person behind the sketch, and the punchline are actually very important to find sketches like this funny. The jokes in this video were not meant to dehumanise women and make fun of us, the joke was Tom being unable to socialise and saying a lot of dumb and offensive shit. The whole video is literally saying: "if you act like this, it's ridiculous and weird". It's not saying: "women are too sensitive because boys will be boys". If that was different, I would not have liked that video. But I understand why it might be offensive to some, this kind of humour isn't for eeryone. I love it, when it doesn't come from a place of making people feel inferior.obscureDnPreference wrote:While those jokes don't sit well with me usually, knowing that Tom is VERY socially conscious and concerned about things like sexual assault makes them more palatable.plath wrote:I've never seen any of Tomska's content before but jesus christ that was awful. This was so good! I remember seeing the prof Layton games on the DS years ago and thinking the puzzles were challenging but interesting! I like how the gameplay is still set up in the DS format too. I didn't even realize it was an ad until they started talking about the in app purchases and of course the ending. I'm actually tempted to buy the game now and that rarely happens with sponsored videos. This is how sponsored videos should be, entertaining enough to make you wanna get it yourself!DatCog wrote:New gaming video!!

i thought this video was cute, i usually hate the ads they do on the gaming channel (i'm still bitter about them putting the best friend quiz in an ad, those smug bastards knew that i wouldn't be able to resist) but i used to love playing the professor layton games with my nan so i actually want to get this app now so we can play it together (i'm so cool). i mean it wasn't as good as the last one but what could have topped the masterpiece that was the crash bandicoot vid.confusedpanda wrote:This was so good! With the collab vids we were getting, I wasn’t expecting to get a gaming vid today but I’m happy to be proven wrong.
I really enjoyed it, thought Deppy were being cute and the game looks interesting. This is the kind of game that I would enjoy playing myself so that helped my enjoyment as well.

I think I'm just off today because both the gaming vid and the tomska sketched missed the mark for me. I really enjoyed rejects so maybe my expectations were just too high for this one, and I just didn't find myself laughing. Maybe that's the same issue with the Layton vid. I was still on a high from Crash Bandicoot. I just always feel like they're a little stiffer in paid promo vids, though I do appreciate that they make more money that way. it had really nice parts though! the puzzles were actually good, i love watching them figure stuff out, it's like with keep talking and nobody explodes. and well, i am happy to give them that sweet sweet cash if that means they'll continue as wonderfully as they have the past few months. go on boys. get that dream house.
I'm so happy about the new gaming video! I'm a big fan of the Professor Layton franchise and totally enjoyed them playing it. They worked well together on the puzzles! I thought it was funny how amazed they were at the 'dystopian future were mantis lizards exist' when it was just some kind of easter egg thing (?) about previous games.
That's the plan.
I don't believe it. The one game I've always wanted them to play was a Professor Layton game and they do one as a spon the progression of videos today just get better and better. I think this video proofs that they would do terrible playthroughs, considering they don't shut up during the actual video parts. Then struggling on the first puzzle was also hilarious, they were very literal thinkers lmao it's the easiest puzzle of the game. I'm pleased that Dan was a fan of the games however I'm concerned that he seems lost when they reference old Layton mysteries. It would be great to see them do puzzles and work it out, the interactive aspect and exploring is similar in a way to Undertale, but I imagine the play through would be literal hours and hours, something they would never do. Still, I'm just happy they played this game.
