I was for sure having some ls withdrawal.. as the moment he appeared on screen I was content on listening to whatever he blabbered on about. There were a couple topics mentioned that did have me rewinding the stream and giving it a double take.

-mentioned the grandma lookalike, but then made a comment on how the rest of his lookalikes are just gay porn stars :wtf:

-Talked about going to some concert, wearing mascara (which like, yes please) and full BDSM gear while getting covered in foam..... we don't need to hear all your hopes and dreams. even if that involves wearing a collar with a leash, and a ball gag.

But question to you all, what do you think of the rising popularity of people believing Dan to be non binary? I know we discussed this briefly awhile back but Dan's talk about the eyeliner tonight has got a few people talking about it on Tumblr again and I always thought it was interesting with how open Dan has always been about gender and his thoughts on it. What do we think, fan service, a simple feminine side or non-binarism? Or a mix of all three, if that's possible?

I'm non-binary, but it's not something I've considered that Dan could be. The thought that that could be a possibility didn't even cross my mind even after reading Trans!Dan and Genderfluid!Dan fanfic. He didn't react like I would while using the app that feminized his face (it terrified me so much that it took me ages to download it and try it) and the videos where he's dressed up I don't see it either. I would expect either angst or happiness, but get neither. I'm thinking he's aware of toxic masculinity and really annoyed with being forced into a box where he has to live up to a certain level of masculinity when that doesn't match his sensitivities and interests.

On a more interesting note, did I understand correctly that Dan (and Phil? probably, let's be real) had to work on this weekend, but we don't know what it is about, apart from it was at the same time that SITC, so that might've been the thing that prevented them from going and they knew about it much in advance?

I'm a skeptic and think he only said that because people at times were spamming the chat with "why didn't you go sitc" and he could address it without being direct. I really don't believe he worked all weekend and just think they chose not to go for whatever reasons and used working as an excuse to not to talk about it.

It felt like such a throw away comment though? I liked the mutual agreement explanation human offered earlier about why they don't go to SIMC anymore, but he either could've buried it completely, like they tend to do when they don't feel comfortable with the topic, or he could've made it more obvious that work was the chosen reason why they didn't go? But probably you're right.

Re: "friend" being used a lot, for me it wasn't just the word and the tone, but also the "I invited myself" thing, it's not just that they use the word "friend" and live in a perfectly glass closet like in the ask dizzy quoted, they do their fair share to debunk the theories, too (I'm still on the fence about Phil's video being intended as damage control after Dan's ls in the bedroom, but, as someone mentioned, Dan's answer about In a Heartbeat did feel a bit like a "no homo" to me)

Personally I don't think Dan is non-binary. I think he has great, progressive thoughts on gender (sometimes!) and it's fantastic that he chooses to share them (sometimes!) and he is open to perhaps not completely breaking down gender stereotypes for himself, but blurring the lines, and questioning what it means to be typically masculine/'one of the lads'. And I think probably wearing makeup is part of that.

But also, he is a performer - he appears on camera at least once a week (liveshows) where he has to look as good as possible, and has probably had his hair and makeup done professionally many times for photoshoots, interviews, events and so on by this point. So naturally he will have picked up tips on how to make his skin look better, eyes look brighter, etc. I bet 99% of male YouTubers we watch wear makeup for videos - at least foundation and possibly concealer and white eyeliner/clear mascara. The only person I can think of off the top of my head who definitely doesn't is Drew Monson. (Sorry Drew I still have a v inappropriate crush on you hmu if you ever read this)

I know not everyone needs to/wants to wear makeup, but for most of us it's natural to want to look our best and if makeup can help someone achieve that - particularly someone as hypercritical/hyperaware of their appearance as Dan seems to be, it seems obvious they might choose to wear it to perform in, or even just to go about their day-to-day lives: even if they do identify as male.

PS I read that last paragraph back and it seemed quite critical of Dan which it isn't meant to be. Maybe I'm projecting my own issues back onto him but I am also very aware/critical of my own looks, and never believe anyone when they tell me I look nice, so I suppose I identify with the idea of wanting to wear makeup to make yourself feel better and not caring what anyone thinks of that. Also makeup is fun to put on so you do you, Dan.

Also, in regards to the friends comments, it's not the fact he used the word friend that made my eye roll; it was the amount of unnecessary times he used it. He didn't have to keep saying 'friends parents' he could have just said 'phil's parents' for some of it or something else, we knew what he was trying to say.

Re-watching that bit of the ls it didn't really sound like he used it that much or unnecessarily, because he was trying to make it relatable : "i'm sure you guys relate to this".
I'm surprised he talked so much about the visit at all, and was happy talking about it.

I'm not a non-binary person and haven't really met non-binary people aside from an occasional interaction on the internet, but I really like the last phrase that I bolded as a description for Dan, I think that it matches him really well.

Edit: I would add that I think that he's also sometimes (not all the time! I think he mostly appreciates the passion, at least these last years) annoyed when the phandom tries to make him a poster person for something gender and/or sexuality, especially when he seems like someone who hasn't completely figured things for themself yet

I had the same thoughts! It's something I've been wondering about since getting back into D&P this year.
At times I think Dan is very comfortable in identifying as male, but there are comments about formless blobs and liking the word 'queer' as an umbrella term that lead me to believe his gender identity/sexuality are not so clear-cut. I often feel with Dan (and even Phil at times) when he talks he seems more like a person whose personality and traits transcend gender binary. It's hard to explain. I'm wary of using words like 'vibes' or 'aura' because I feel like they are created by me and they're projections of my own feelings. Coming from a non-binary person he seems far more at ease being seen as the gender he was assigned at birth than me, but we don't know how everybody feels on the inside just from their outward appearance and gestures.

To sum up what I'd written though, I think Dan may be on the spectrum as gender and sexuality is, and like his sexuality I think it's something he hints at and speaks about often but never clarifies either way. Or maybe I'm talking out of my arse Dan expressing himself however he feels most comfortable is all good for me however.

Oop another point I remembered I wrote down (smh why does it keep logging me out before I manage to submit lengthy posts that get lost forever ), I've always wondered whether Dan's openness about makeup and fashion and so on can be attributed to a genuine interest in these more traditionally feminine things or sometimes out of being coerced by the phandom into it. I think it was a reference to both the Tinder video and maybe even to Dream Daddy, since we all know the drama that went down there plus he'd already stated in the ls that he knew people would be upset over their choices in the game no matter what. He must be feeling a bit attacked from all angles right now. (Though I respect the struggle of making things without offending people I don't particularly feel bad for him; he has a very public career and a very diverse, passionate audience with numbers supporting him blindly far outweighing the number of people constructively critical. Plus, the payoff for his risk and sometimes associated annoyance is more than compensatory.)

[offtopic]I'm sorry that you feel like this, Capybantsa. I get frustrated with these conversations too, because no one is ever going to agree, so we shouldn't keep dragging it out. Honestly, this is part of why I'm a lurker basically everywhere I hang out on the internet.
