What are the odds that they are on the Disney pirate ship for Flipside today? Tomska posted a boat selfie...
Ooh, interesting. It looks like it's a Disney UK sponsored event for the premiere of new Pirates of the Carribean movie. I guess we'll see how many youtubers went if/when more pics start popping up?
I hope Phil tells us if he's doing a liveshow today or not though.
Why no, I definitely didn't blow up this picture in an attempt to see if any of the people were D+P....
I'm betting we get the Dils birthday Sims video that Phil mentioned in a tweet whether they're on the boat or not.
So many interesting points! Thank you all for reading my rant and telling me your opinions
First of all, I'd like to clarify that my post was not meant in any way as a complaint about their desire for privacy, I'm perfectly content with the amount of content/real life stuff they share, because I know that's what they feel comfortable with sharing. I wasn't whining that we don't get more and I wasn't trying to imply that they should follow the example of other youtubers and share more. I was simply noting the stark contrast between their approach to being popular youtubers and that of so many others. It's entirely their right to handle their careers however they please, and I was actually remarking how fascinating it is that they managed to become so successful with a different pr strategy/social media approach than most.
rainydays wrote: Thu Sep 28, 2017 9:08 amFor a youtuber, their image and life is pretty much their source of income. They kinda decide to sell their lives, that's how they keep their viewers interested and entertained. And they would be nothing without their fans, because who would buy their books, merch or tour tickets?
Kind of agree, kind of disagree. They would be nothing without their fans; but I also think that it's up to a youtuber to define how much of their life they want to sell in exchange for fans. I think if you asked Phil, he'd say his job is to make videos that people like. I genuinely think Phil does not feel any responsibility to fans beyond that. Whatever else he shares is precisely what he feels like sharing, which often times is not very much. (Hence robo-tweets. And hence why without Dan snaring the bigger fanbase, Phil would probably be Jimmy - someone with a decent day job who makes videos because he likes to. And without Phil, Dan would be charlieissocoollike - someone who got a big audience but was miserable with it taking over his life and mental health and burnt out hard.)
Wow, this is a beautiful comparison, I'm a little mind blown, I love it so much. I love how well they complete each other, how they are two pieces of a puzzle, two halves of a whole, how good they are for each other. Their luck in finding each other and fitting so perfectly is definitely a huge part of why they're so successful. It's incredible how their personalities seem to be at odds at times, but then it seems like they share the same mind. They have found something so unbelievably special together, sometimes I can't comprehend it.
rainydays wrote: Thu Sep 28, 2017 9:08 amDan and Phil sure have one of the most unique and interesting youtube experiences I've ever seen, and the fact that they manage to be so successful while maintaining what I consider such a high level of privacy is a testament to how much people are drawn to their personalities rather than their cool shiny lives, partying and traveling the world and meeting celebrities.
I'm trying to figure out how to word this without making it about the relationship - but I think part of the appeal are the things they cannot hide. They are private about what they're doing but they have never been able to fully hide how their life is lived together, and the fact that we know - have known, all along, even in times when they didn't volunteer it - that they are side by side in their daily life - is an insight. Now in 2017 they're sharing more and more, and my inclination is always to argue with people who say they're too private - like, what? They're telling us SO MUCH now! But I do also understand that people don't mean 'we know Dan went back to Isle of Man with Phil back home for his birthday' - they mean 'we know Dan went back to Isle of Man with Phil but what did they have for breakfast and what's Phil's mom's current hairstyle and what board games did they play' because those are the details that other people share on snapchat or instagram stories or in daily vlogs.
As I said before, that's not at all what I was asking for, I don't need to know every detail of their life, I'm aware that if they're not sharing more, it's because this is what they're comfortable with, and that's perfectly okay. Also I'm a relatively new fan (only a few months), so I guess I don't really have the perception of how much more private they used to be and how different things are now. It took me a while to even understand what people meant by "post-baking universe", I was like "why, isn't that how they've always been?" lol.
You're right though, what we still get to see of their life and their relationship is incredibly appealing, and along with the undeniable chemistry they show whenever they're together, it's another big reason why so many people obsess over them (and I guess the reason why I'm even writing this post in the first place ).
But about the kind of content they put out compared to other youtubers, I think it's just useless to compare it. It wasn't like this at first. In the beginning of youtube not everyone dailyvlogged, snapchat wasn't a thing yet, same goes for instagram. Twitter was starting to gain momentum at the beginning of Dip and Dot. Sharing with your audience wasn't a thing like it is now. With time, and with more social hitting us, it became easier to share and then overshare, and people like Dan and Phil, who just didn't, became weird for it. If you think about it, there's nothing that says a youtuber HAS to be a daily vlogger or HAS to share on their social media what they do. Yes, for some youtubers it makes it easier to connect with their audience, but Dan and Phil never had that need, so why should they change now?
They have an audience that is way too interested in them as people and their relationship, who managed to get hold of their address even if they don't dailyvlogged like Alfie does ( which, surprise, got them a lot of stress and I think it's a major point why they moved). If they started to share even more, I can't imagine how much more the boundaries would be pushed. I doubt they want that.
Personally I'm involved in the Supefruit fandom, and boy they used to overshare. There was always something on snapchat or instagram or pictures with their friends and just so many details. When there are periods (like now) when they barely let the audience know when they are besides working, the fandom goes crazy. Stalk their friends. Ask their families. Start stupid rumours. It's not as fun to know more than you should tbh
Sorry, I hid your post for the same reason you did mine.
I agree with you, and really we're kind of saying the same thing. The point of my post was not asking for more in terms of what they decide to share, I was simply noting how interesting it is that the evolution of their careers and the way they reached success and popularity is so different than most youtubers. They definitely shouldn't change, if that's not what they want to.

Also, I find it interesting to note how it's easy for me to distinguish between the phandom as a,well, actual fandom, and the subscribers of other youtubers as an audience. To me there's a difference and I'd love to talk about it but i need more time to be coherent with my words
There's definitely a difference, you're right. To me it comes down to people who are actively engaged in promoting/discussing/speculating about the person they're a fan of VS casual viewers who simply enjoy the videos (in the case of youtubers, or movies/songs, in the case of actors/singers) and at the most follow them on social media (twitter, IG), but without analyzing everything or having forum discussions about them (ah ah).
P.S.: hi, it's kinda weird to talk to another Italian in a different language
Sorry if a lot of this is barely coherent, I had to rush through all of your answers

The Deppy bits from Susan's video are cute, but honestly, the video itself just rubs me the wrong way. She's probably had some underpaid intern write it, find the people to participate and then edit it and did none of the work herself. I love that she's getting so much hate in her comment section.
mte, it's a somewhat suspicious attempt at saying "I AM ONE OF YOU!" with the apocalypse scandal going on imo.
This might be a dumb question but what scandal are we talking about here?
Interesting points all round and too many to reply to directly.
I would say that part of why they are so successful still is because they don't share as much as others. I feel that for the YouTubers that have lost viewers part of that was oversaturation. Because they don't daily blog/stories/Snapchat everything they do share seems special still.
I see it almost like how movie trailers these days give away all the plot, so why see it? If people share it all on social media why bother watching the actual videos?
However the point of it being live was also so true. I imagine watching the boncas was probably the same sort of feeling?

Just tuning into the liveshow and I am distracted by how awful the background is. Could Phil not pick anywhere else in the flat to lifestream from? The angle of the wall with the tiny hint of a doorframe in the background looks so bad. I feel cornered just watching it lol
I feel his pain on Doctor Foster/neverending throwing each other around the kitchen sex scene/watching it in public - I watched that ep on a train and accidentally switched my ipad off in my rush to try and tilt the screen down. It was intense af and came out of nowhere

He probably has to go to a random corner of the flat as otherwise people just comment that they can hear Dan clickity-clacking on his gaming computer the whole show.

I'm assuming it's the adpocalypse. Recently YouTube lost a lot of advertisers due to ads being played on extremist videos, so YouTube started demonitising videos very strictly and a lot of channels lost a lot of money.
I wasn't expecting a live show, but really glad we got one especially because it was such a good one.
Really seemed like he was in a good mood, and felt like he told us quite a lot of what happened at the creators summit. I also thought that for Phil he used the word 'we' quite a bit.
Plus I just really like the way he tells stories, and there were some good ones imo.

He's sitting at the kitchen table, behind him is the gaming shelf that we see in Dan's last livestream, not a doorframe.
I thought i could hear the sound of pots or pans at one point, anyone else?
Anyway, he was giddy it was a pleasant liveshow to watch.
If anyone's interested, a French beauty youtuber vlogged the Creator Summit, and she mentions Deppy. I'll try and give you a translation under the spoilers!
It starts at 8:13
“Among the foreign youtubers that I know who were there tonight – and again it was really weird for me – I saw Joe Sugg, Zoella's brother, Caspar Lee, Dan and Phil and Anthony Padilla. So I was feeling like a huge fangirl, I couldn't get the nerves to go and talk to them. As always I was really shy and I didn't dare to go, even though I'm a gigantic fan of Joe's videos and even more of her sister, I love what she does. So it's always a bit weird to see the people you watch in videos all the time for real, in front of you, drinking 5 meters away, and feeling like you're scared to talk to them”.
She also shows a rooftop party at 5:06, probably the one Phil mentioned in his LS. It seems there were a lot of entertainers at that party, because she talked to a woman reading tarot cards.
She said she vlogged the three days of the Summit (this one was only the first day), so I'll try and tell you if a wild Deppy appears in the background!

I didn't realize that was the kitchen. Idk, something about the setting just kept me from being able to really watch it (i'm just being weird). But he was so energetic in this liveshow! I loved hearing about the creators summit and I'm glad they went to this one instead of the one most of uk/us vloggers went to.
I'm also looking forward to a sims video tomorrow. I think I'm one of the few people who enjoy the series still. I'm just for whatever they put out
Oh, I totally missed the liveshow but at least I have something to do this afternoon! I'm also looking forward to a sims video, those are my favourites.
Also, kind of off-topic: I was watching Rubius' vlog of creators summit and Phil appears in the background in one moment. I'm not gonna lie, I kind of freaked out. :number1:
I didn't get any kind of notification for the ls from YouTube or a Tumblr (I should probably turn on Twitter notifications) so it had just finished when I started. I didn't take notes, but might later when I rewatch. I liked his aesthetic t-shirt (I had meant to ask about the rainbow gradient tee he was wearing the last day of the summit, both were very pretty). I thought it was adorable that he watches a show his mom watches just to have something to regularly bond over. It's been a long time since I had that with my mom, but I do with my siblings. Lol at the sexposition on the plane. Nice stories from the summit. I was watching vlog compilations from 2015 and 2016 earlier today, so that was cool to hear, especially the magic trick. Poor Phil couldn't foam up the matcha or get his blades off without help from the pros. It was a 70's costume booth as I suspected. Goodness could you imagine Phil in bell bottoms? His legs did look especially skinny in contrast to the billowy poet shirt, plus the extra height. I loved that he had a clear vision for his glitter jewels. I noticed from photos that a lot of the guys didn't get them done. I think I saw at least three girls, plus the phanthony trio. But I might not be remembering perfectly. Give us those photo booth pics! Interesting that Anthony was there as a speaker. Liked his nostalgic cereal, but no mention of the churros. Excited for Dil and for the clothes video. Lol at Tom Daley showing up at the end. malday I also thought I heard pots/pans, but dismissed it as we probably would have heard more if Dan was cooking right there... What I would give for domestic joint ls while taking turns cooking and reading the chat. Do not dash my hopes for Halloween baking like that Phil!
I just saw on Tumblr, Skype ships it (or someone at Skype does). I feel like this isn't he first time I've seen something like this from them.

Here's another example of Skype mentioning Dan and Phil on twitter, I think they do talk about them occasionally
Also upon searching for tweets related to Dan and Phil and Skype I mostly just found Dan's tweets about being on Skype for 5 and a half hours and now I'm emotional
I also heard what I thought was kitchen noises. Perhaps Dan was just dropping a few dishes off in the sink? That would explain why the noises were pretty quiet and brief.

I've only seen a tiny peek of it, but I'm guessing the rainbow gradient tee is this...

Adding to this to further clarify that these 'stricter' rules means videos being demonetized for little shit like swearing or sketches with mild violence and fake blood. News, opinion and educational channels also get demonetized for discussing 'controversial' topics. LGBT+ content is one of the biggest victims getting mass demonetized for absolutely no reason at all. Straight people kissing? Great! Here's money. Gay couple kissing? I think the fuck not.
YouTube's communication about this issue has been an absolute joke and they just keep saying 'we're sorry it's the ~algorithm~' and then continue to do absolutely nothing people are rightfully pissed.
(and yeah I accidentally left the d out of adpocalypse)
He was lovely in the liveshow, such energy and I love his deep voice. Best bit was "I have a vision!" A better closeup photo of his four-colour gradient glitter would be great, but I guess he didn't take one. He was so cute when the lava lamp blooped too. Bloopenidge, I think he called it.

Videos are being demonetized for the stupidest shit. There's a YouTuber named Kendall Rae who does a lot of conspiracy theories and videos about missing people. She nows relies completely on her merchandise due to these stricter rules. She might have a Patreon too, but I'm not sure.
YouTube's been singling out gay content even before this year. Remember that video that went viral in 2015 of the two women who kissed behind that x-ray screen? I couldn't even watch it because it was marked as 18+ content even though it was literally just a kiss. Then they had the nerve to put it in YouTube Rewind to show how "supportive" they are.
(Though the link didn't work for me because it defaulted to the US shop and I had to look it up on the U.K. website. Though scrolling through the shirts again made me really excited for the possible clothing. Floral accents please!)

Actually today I just saw one youtuber pointing to all this crap that is happening (MTF youtuber) and how actually unequal these rules are where big channels like Comedy Central have 30sec long ads before sketches with sexual content but her videos (with no such content) get demonetized as soon as she uploads them (even if it is a video talking about how to concentrate better!). Honestly, I really worry where youtube is heading. There was always so much censorship on regular TV and youtube became a great diverse place and source and now... :ddd:
